Gokuraku Shopping Street - The Main Commercial Street in the Onsen Town @ Noboribetsu [Hokkaido, Japan]

I was half expecting the onsen town in noboribetsu to be a quiet place but there's actually a shopping street known as Gokuraku that's right outside Takimoto Inn

Aside from the shopping, you could also look out for the many cute demon statues installed along the street; they were great for selfies and photo taking.

The towering King of Hell with his own shows; it's not really a temple but it's indeed a unique feature! For more information, please click here.

One of the many souvenir shops along the street; in addition to popular Hokkaido snacks, there were many more to see, especially the demon-themed memorabilia.

Warning; they don't come cheap!

Honey although my eyes were drawn to another thing; not the pretty ladies in case you are wondering. I am more interested in the big ice cream cone next to the main entrance!

Soft serve (honey) that cost 320 yen; tasted rich of honey which should be a good thing but i prefer the traditional hokkaido vanilla soft serve for their richer creaminess.

There's also the cup version with toppings like blueberry and honey, yuzu mitsu, maple honey. Prefer something healthier, go for the honey drinks.

In the middle of the about 400-meter street is a iconic store; the 7-11 convenience store!

How could we not step into the store?! It's always a good place to top up on the essentials like mineral water, snacks! I got a pack of biscuits that appeared really good on the packaging.

Sadly, it wasn't the sweet biscuit kind that i would have enjoyed better; salty with a cheesy filling. As my travel mates didn't like it too, i am the only one who's left with the task to clear up the bag. I could have thrown away but i am too stingy for that!

Buddy demon statues.

A pretty tree that seemed to be showing shades of autumn! I am seriously considering another visit to Japan in autumn where leaves of various colors beautified the landscape.

As we were a bit short of time when we arrived at the onsen town, our objective was more to find lunch (which was settled at an izakaya near the 7-11) and we returned back to the shopping street in the evening to seek dinner!

In a while, i can also show you the scenes at night for better contrast. For example, the above picture is the same souvenir shop i attached earlier in this post. Looks better at night, i feel.

People were out in their yutakas!

Gigantic cudgel (the usual weapon for the Japanese demons); i wonder if it is the missing one from Sengen Park which was supposed to have nine cudgels and i only found eight on site.

Building housing the izakaya (たこ焼き 永森) where we had lunch!

Heart-shaped window.

Another souvenir shop; i refrained from stepping in as i already made up my mind to buy everything from Sapporo where the pricing might be lower (and they usually are for Hokkaido-theme snacks and souvenir).

One of the accommodations; i just checked the website and my eyes almost fell out. I think i am better off with Takimoto Inn since i am not a big fan of tatami rooms.

End of the Gokuraku Shopping Street.

Another good scale store although it was already closed for the day at about 7.00 am. Even though i am stopping myself from buying things, i would still love to check out bigger stores in case they have the piggy banks i want!

Still sourcing for a place to have dinner and eventually got our tummies filled at Isekura (いせくら); pity we didn't do much research beforehand and missed out on having their milk ramen! p.s. to be frank, we might not even consider ramen as we just had it for dinner the night before.

Some shops were still open when we exited about an hour later and there's an interesting place; a wasabi store with real, living Japanese horseradish! I have no idea that a wasabi can cost 3,000 yen (close to S$40)!

Yukake-Kizo Demon Statue - seeing that he wasn't wearing anything, i very kindly took a bucket of hot spring water and drenched it over him.

The demon in daytime as i was back again the next morning. Anyway, Yukake-Kizo is supposed to help those who wish for health and eliminate calamity. With that in mind, i gave him another sulfur rich shower.

This one appeared to be for school-goers as the Chinese characters infer to pass an exam / subject. Oh well, no harm in asking your child to pray for it even though what matters most is that they work hard for school!

I left this to the last as it's something i should have done upon arrival in Noboribetsu.

Noboribetsu's tourist information centre which might have made it easier for us to source for food. Other than the spread of brochures and information, there's a clean washroom if you need one.

Patbingsoo Korean Dining House @ Northpoint City Shopping Centre [Singapore]

Northpoint in Yishun has become even more happening with the opening of the south wing that brought tons of eateries to the infamous town! Today, let me share my review of Patbingsoo which offers more than just the popular South Korean iced dessert.

Don't you just love menu showing bright and large pictures of the dishes available for ordering?! The only downside is when the real stuff appears vastly different when served to your table. Oh well, at least we know who to blame.

After ordering, take the cutlery (and serviettes) from the drawer under your table. The restaurant isn't big and the optimal usage of space is necessary to create more walking space for diners! p.s. i already found the current layout to be a bit tight.

Bibimbab (Pork) - i usually tried not to order a carbohydrate-rich dish but if i am with my parents, that would be a standard staple for them and the benefit for me is that i can sample a bit without feeling overly guilty.

Since mom doesn't take beef, i had to make do with the pork version and even though the serving seemed pretty generous with almost overflowing ingredients; the reality was that the bowl is small and i couldn't help comparing the size with the humongous yangpunibibipbap from 2D1N soju bang

Taste wise, it was honestly not too bad even though there wasn't an exceptional factor that impressed us. I would suggest that the eatery replaces the bowl with a bigger one; even if the portion for the ingredients is the same, it does make it easier for us to mix the ingredients as required to enjoy bibimbap.

Honey Garlic Chicken Wings - i should have been more observant with the picture on the menu as the price of S$10.90 (before GST and service charge) for two whole chicken wings is indeed pricey and it didn't help that they weren't out of this world. For that price, it's more worth your money to go for 4Fingers that's located a floor above.

Fried Samgyeobsal - with a recommended symbol on the menu and given my taste for deep fried food and pork belly, this was a definite must-order! The batter did look like it's thicker compared to the picture on the menu.

Aside from being visually unappealing, this was a total letdown; it's somewhat like eating fish and chips with a disappointing batter surrounding a thin, rubbery piece of salty pork belly. One thing for sure; it's definitely "extra sinful" as indicated on the menu.

Kimbap (Pork) - out of the dishes ordered so far, i am most satisfied with the kimbap as it was a delicious amalgamation of rice, juicy pork, crunchy kimchi and fresh lettuce and cucumber!

Euljiro Bingsoo - of course i had to get a bingsoo and no thanks to the recent news on rock melons contaminated with the listeria bacteria; Patbingsoo had halted the sale of Sinsa (rock melon) Patbingsoo and we had to defer to an alternative.

Drench the Korean ice-kacang with the small glass of berry cheese sauce and be ready to indulge in the luxurious shaved ice mountain that consisted of cheese cake, vanilla ice cream and many pieces of diced up strawberries!

On one hand, I actually like this a lot as the tightly packed snow ice was rich in milk and i enjoyed having the taste of cheese cake (hidden underneath) together with milk ice and sweet strawberries in every scoop that went into my mouth! Mom, on the other hand, preferred loosely packed snow ice that's not as milky; taste can be so subjective. :)

The Hell Valley (Jigokudani / 地獄谷) @ Noboribetsu [Hokkaido, Japan]

The most famous attraction in Hokkaido's Noboribetsu region is Jigokudani (Hell Valley) and even though i have been to the similar thermal valley in Taiwan, i thought i might as well check it out, especially when it's just a short walk from Takimoto Inn!

Directional signage was clear and in case you still can't rely on them, follow the crowd as most people would be on their way to the valley; according to some of my friends who took on tour packages to Hokkaido, Hell Valley is just a stopover and they didn't get to stay in the demon-filled onsen town.

Spacious walkway.

Those on tour packages would be on a touch and go itinerary but there was more than just the Hell Valley; a number of walking trails brought us to hot water marshes and even a natural foot bath!

Aside from the sulfuric smell (which wasn't that unbearable), you may feel the thermal heat from the pipes jutting out from stone walls.

It couldn't be compared to the less developed Kawah Rengganis in Bandung though; where you can literally put your hands next to the holes on the ground and risking severe burns!

Pretty sight in front of us where gas rises continuously due to "high volcanic energy in the form of magma believed to be stored underground"!

Panorama!

A location marker on the scaled-down version of the valley - the greenery surrounding the valley is known as the primeval forest which i assumed has been around for a long time.

How did this get there? No idea and although it's an inscription of its name in Japanese Kanji (Chinese characters), it felt more like a tombstone.

A friend marveling at the beauty of mother nature.

As expected, such signboard is a huge draw among tourists and for a person who hates to waste time, i am quite chilled to take for others and upload the picture to my blog.

Notice the pathway on the left? We shall be on our way to explore that area and find out the source for that large cloud of gas!

I did see this smaller compound with what appeared to be a little Shinto shrine. Although time wasn't on our side, it's a waste to give it a miss since the slight detour wasn't expected to take long.

Oh my god, two Japanese Sika deer!

It's always exciting to see wildlife in their natural setting and i thought they could be endangered; turned out their population in Japanese exceeds three million and the species is considered overpopulated.

Continuing our walking trail.

Yakushi - Nyorai; the shrine i saw earlier which i assumed to be Shintoism based. Turned out it was a Buddha said to help people with illness. You may read more here.

Another angle.

Frankly, the decor and architecture of the shrine appeared to be more Shinto than Buddhist even though there's a noticeable difference; Shinto shrines usually have the 'doors' closed.

Low fence means i wouldn't be surprised if some daredevils decide to step into the valley for thrills. I might be one of them 20 years ago.

'Tombstones' again.

I sincerely believe there's something about my head of hair since the hornet incident at Kawah Rengganis; i tend to have increasing encounters of whirring bees and hornets surrounding me!

On our way again.

View next to the pathway; thanks to the cooler temperature despite the season being summer, it was a relaxing walk with a peaceful atmosphere.

Hillside was bare due to the heat and gas as they tend to make the soil highly acidic and dry. However, alpine plants were said to be able to survive better in the aforementioned conditions and i read on a noticeboard that you can find marsh tea and cowberry.

Honestly, i don't think i would be able to identify them anyway and prefer to look at the bigger picture to save precious time!

See that building there; it's near the entrance of Jigokudani and if you look closer, you would see glass window panes with lights. That's the Onsen Heaven of Dai-ichi Takimotokan where you can soak in mineral-rich hot spring and relax by the beauty of hell valley!

Looking back at the path we took.

Signs asking visitors to keep off the grounds of Hell Valley. I can imagine that the same signs would be installed at Kawah Rengganis in the near future as there's absolutely none when i visited.

Wooden platform that shall lead us to the middle of the valley!

In comparison to what we experienced at the start of Hell Valley, the vents at this part appeared to be more active in purging out the gas.

I was curious on what's there at the end.

No idea where the crowd came from as the platform was exceptionally filled with people whereas the pathway i came from didn't seem to be that packed.

Now, let's see what's there in the middle!

Known as the Tessen (Iron Spring) Pond, it's a geyser with a temperature of about 80 degrees celcius. Well, i didn't see any bubbling and it did seem like a pretty blue pond with metallic sides.

On our way out of the platform!

I came out with a 20-second time-lapsed video of the walk along the wooden platform to Tessen Pond; click if you would like to see more!

We could have gone back to where we started but the trail was connected to a few other attractions and given that there's still about an hour or two before dinnertime, we figured it's better use to cover what we can before sunset.

Crowding around Tessen Pond!

Oku no Yu (奥の湯) - The Smaller Hot Spring Pond next to Oyunuma @ Noboribetsu [Hokkaido, Japan]

Following our visit to Hell Valley, we hiked across the primeval forest for about 15 minutes before reaching another area with steam rising from the ground.

A connecting drain that was dry. If it carries mineral rich thermal water, there's a chance you might find people attempting to soak their feet in it; provided the temperature is not scalding hot!

Standing safely behind the wooden fence, let me present to you Oku no Yu (奥の湯); a hot spring pond that sounds like a miracle soup in the Japanese Kanji characters.

Said to gush black sulfurous hot spring water, the water appeared much more welcoming with a light bluish hue. Take note though; "surface temperature ranges from 75°C to over 85°C." and in case you feel that that's manageable, i have tried 41°C hot spring and it's murderous!

Never, ever attempt!

As you can probably attest from the pictures, Oku no Yu is rather small and couldn't compare to the much bigger one that's right opposite it. More pictures on Oyunuma shall be shared in a separate post!

Oyunuma (大湯沼) - One of the World's Largest Hot Water Lake @ Noboribetsu [Hokkaido, Japan]

About a 15-minute hike away from Hell Valley is a spectacular, large pool of heated water with clouds of steam rising above its surface; the Oyunuma (大湯沼)!

It's one of the largest thermal lakes in the world with a circumference of about a kilometer. The record holder is the Frying Pan Lake in New Zealand.

The temperature on the surface is about 40-50°C which is much lower than the nearby Oku no Yu (奥の湯) although at its deepest (22 meters), it can shoot to as high as 130°C!

Expected panorama (from me) for your viewing pleasure - that mountain behind the pond is Mt Hiyori; an 377-meter tall active volcano which didn't appear to be doubled the height of our very own Bukit Timah Hill!

Black soil deposits; in the past, i read that sulfur was mined from the bottom of the lake! I have no idea how that's possible as even with the use of equipment, i believe such excavation is extremely risky.

Walk was relaxing and cool even though we visited in the summer month of August!

With all the wasted steam, wouldn't it be good to harvest them for power generation? Okay, i am no expert and this just came to my mind.

Random picture!

Last panorama before we proceeded towards the interesting natural foot bath that's 'powered' by Oyunuma! In this hike we undertook at Noboribetsu, the foot bath was the highlight; so much so that we returned the next day for another therapeutic session!

Toya Caldera and Usu Volcano Global Geopark Mountaintop Disaster Prevention Theatre @ Lake Toya [Hokkaido, Japan]

Natural disasters seldom strike Singapore and most of us are rather ignorant when it comes to empathizing the scale of destruction, pain and suffering that other countries have encountered.

Hence, it was with a curious mind that i stepped into the Toya Caldera and Usu Volcano Global Geopark Mountaintop Disaster Prevention Theatre at the sanchou station of Usuzan Ropeway at Lake Toya.

It showcased a short, looping documentary on the measures taken, in the event of volcanic activity, to prepare residents in the region. To put things in better context, Mount Usu erupted 4 times in the 20th century; last of which was in year 2000.

Such measures have resulted in zero casualty in the last eruption.

Nevertheless, the Japanese at Lake Toya are not complacent and are constantly in "ready" mode should the need arises as smoke continues to rise from a few craters and from the recent news; quite a number volcanoes in Asia had erupted.

Pictures of the four eruptions at Mount Usu.

In case you are not interested in the documentary, the theatre is still a very much needed place for washrooms, free wifi and seats while waiting for the gondola to arrive.

Oyunuma Brook Natural Foot Bath - Onsen Exclusively for the Feet! @ Noboribetsu [Hokkaido, Japan]

$

It's almost seven months since my visit to Hokkaido last August but it remains deeply etched in my memory; there were a number of key highlights for my inaugural Japan trip and one of them was soaking my tired feet in a natural foot bath at Noboribetsu!

How natural is it?! Well, its actual source came from Oyunuma; one of the largest thermal lakes in the world! I believe the water also originates from Taisho Jigoku (大正地獄); a smaller hot water pond that was closed for safety reasons when we were there.

Crossing the wooden bridge; strangely, my three travel mates in front of me appeared to be spread out equally in distance; this actually reminded me of a weird incident at Pulau Ubin when a group of friends were cycling along a unlit path on a moon-less night.

Anyway, shall share the story another day. In the meantime, a picture of a steaming brook with water that came from Oyunuma

Must occasionally make use of the shutter function on my DSLR since i am a lover of its automatic button. Oh well, a bit overexposed in my opinion and i am too lousy in photoshop to improve it.

At no point should you be wondering if you can dip your feet into the water! Technically, the water wasn't deep at this point but since the foot bath was quite widely featured; there must be a proper place where you can soothe your feet and this area definitely didn't cut it as being proper, and safe.

Just follow the path (please don't attempt to push your friends or even your child to the edge) and you would eventually came to an area where you will know for sure it's THE foot bath area.

Ta dah!

There were proper wooden beams and planks for you to sit on and the calmer water was high enough to cover both of the feet without wetting your bermuda shorts that's not longer than your knees.

Staircase leading down to the brook.

Green, lush foliage, the soothing music from the cascading waterfall and feet that were submerged in warm water; the atmosphere was extremely relaxed when i closed my eyes, until some noisy tourists brought me back to reality.

Do keep in mind the notice that warned of sudden change in temperature; resulting in the water being too hot due to "activities at Taisho Jigoku". The notice was the reason why i thought the foot bath could have two sources; Oyunuma and Taisho Jigoku.

Whatever the case, let's kick start the soaking and unless you want to bear the risk of having a wet bottom; get one of these styrofoam mats there were hung over nails hammered onto a horizontal wooden pole!

Put it on the wooden plank and use it not only to prevent a wet butt but also as a comfortable cushy pad for your backside; especially sharp ones like mine.

If the mats run out, just walk across to the other side of the brook with round wooden beams. As people don't walk along that side, the beams were generally dry.

Enjoying the therapeutic onsen moments; as you can see, the soil was black and although i didn't rub them on my face, i did like scrubbing my hands and feet with them!

As the 'waterfall' wasn't tall and we didn't bring extra clothing, it's a challenge to have hot spring water running down from the head to the feet just like what my family and i did at Sari Ater Hot Spring Park in Bandung

Since it was nearing 6 pm and visibility was worsening the longer we dragged the time at the natural foot bath, we decided to get going despite being super reluctant to do so.

This seemed like a pump room for the sulfur rich water.

Another wooden bridge connected us to the main road which we actually drove along from Lake Toya to Noboribetsu

'Drain' that's in fact from the brook we soaked our feet earlier; maybe due to the colour, it didn't look as appealing and as mesmerizing as it did earlier.

No, we didn't drive the car! However, we did return the next morning at about 8 am as Alex and I, with two travel mates who also woke up early, would love to pamper our feet (and relax our souls)!

I would share the location of the carpark later as i understand some of you would prefer to check out the attractions in Noboribetsu using the car instead of hiking. I would have done so myself but i honestly didn't know there were parking lots available near the foot bath and Oyunuma.

Just remember to keep a lookout for traffic as it's a bend from the carpark to the entrance of the oyunuma wooden path; a blind spot for drivers.

Entrance.

The pump house we passed by the day before.

Arrival and total time taken for us to reach the natural foot bath from the carpark was only a mere five minutes! Those rushing for a time and / or only passing through Noboribetsu should consider visiting this place!

Foot bath belonged exclusively to us! Aside from the lack of visitors so early in the morning, another key advantage was that the cooler surrounding temperature made it even more shiok to soak our feet in the hot water!

This explained why our feet were literally just hovering above the water for a good one or two minutes before soreness forced us to bring them down.

More pictures for your viewing pleasure!

We had a blast for about 30 minutes before other tourists started streaming in; guess they couldn't sleep just like us given how early the sun rises in Japan in summer.

Open Air Street Food 'Hawker Centre' along Bangla Road @ Patong [Phuket, Thailand]

Frankly, i couldn't pinpoint the exact location of this open air 'hawker centre' at Patong (Phuket) as google map had yet to be updated but i can guarantee you it's along the famous bangla street!

Is there any particular reason why i decided to share this 'hawker centre' as dinner was satisfied less than an hour ago at Ruen Thai restaurant?

I am being totally honest here - i had too many photographs for the Phuket trip and breaking them into mini-postings does help in clearing; albeit slowly.

Nevertheless, it's a gastronomic eye opener, especially for those on their first visit to Southeast Asia, with many stalls decked with displays of mouthwatering food! Even I was tempted although i managed to restrain my gluttony under the watchful eyes of my dad.

More pictures for your viewing pleasure and if you are sharp enough; to check out the prices for some of the dishes. I did a mental calculation and feel that the pricing, while not being astronomical for Singapore's standard, was almost comparable to what i had earlier at Ruen Thai restaurant!

Notable differences are that i get to be served in a restaurant, there's shelter (and maybe a fan or two to cool us down), better seating and psychologically, a heavier emphasis on hygiene; latter of which would be a key consideration for me given my weak tummy.

The place might appear empty but it was because the day was still early and if you have been to Phuket, you would know that Bangla Street only comes alive when the sun sets.

The Walking Trail / Pathway (Covering Hell's Valley, Oyunuma, Oku no Yu & Oyunuma Brook Natural Foot Bath) @ Noboribetsu [Hokkaido, Japan]

Many blogs would just mention about Hell's Valley in their itinerary to Noboribetsu in Hokkaido but there's much more to this quaint, little onsen town; for example, the pathways leading to a few impressive natural wonders!

I have shared those "wonders" in the past week although having a summary might allow you to decide which is better; walking versus driving. So let's now begin from the 'main' entrance; the Y-junction for Hell Valley, Yuzuwa shrine and Geyser Park.

Another mini shrine slightly further down the road leading to Hell Valley

Absolutely no idea what the shrine was honoring; the small statue within seemed to be either a very angry man / or bearish looking demon. Honestly, I can't decipher much.

It's easy to locate this mini shrine down as it's flanked on both sides by gigantic demons; a seated blue demon which was about 2.2 meters tall.

And a standing 3.5 meters tall red-skinned demon!

View of Hell Valley - this would be the same side of view that those soaking in onsen heaven at dai ichi takimotokan would be greeted with.

Hell Valley (Jigoku-dani) - for detailed writeup (and way more photos), click here. For those thinking if it is similar to the thermal valley in Taiwan's beitou, it's not the same!

Continuing our walk as it's only 5.00 pm.

Attention seeking board on wooden pole - hiking is a very boring affair, especially for those who are not observant to the little movements in nature; hence, let's gain knowledge by participating in this along-the-trail fun quiz regarding Noboribetsu!

If not for the metal rods that acted as fences, i would have thought this was an ancient platform to conduct century-old Japanese rituals.

It's essentially a viewing platform overlooking Hell Valley.

Directional signs were clearly displayed and getting lost isn't an option unless you are terrible in following the paths!

Question No 1 - What's the circumference of Oyunuma? For the answer, look out for the panel for question no 2.  Actually, what i find more interesting was the information that 3,000 tons of hot water from Oyunuma flows into the ocean! It. however, begets the question if it is daily, monthly or yearly.

430 meter to Oku no Yu (奥の湯) which is honestly just beside Oyunuma and 1.3 kilometers to the place which is one of the highlights of my Hokkaido trip; Oyunuma Brook Natural Foot Bath.

Totally expected upward trail.

Did i just miss out on the panel for question 2?! Anyway, the information this time was that Oyunuma is a rare crater lake with grayish black hot water! Well, it didn't look grey in real life actually.

Climbing up the stairs - as weather was relatively cooling, it seriously wasn't that much of an issue. Take it slow and steady and if need be, held on to the rails.

What's a forest fire? Just fire in a forest right?

Another sign pointing towards Oyunuma and 20 meters from an observatory overlooking one of the world's largest hot water lakes.

Once again, i don't recall seeing the panel for question 4! Information - apparently about 300 tons of sulfur sediments a month are collected from the bottom of Oyunuma.

Eh, a stone guardian wearing a Chinese dudou (肚兜) the wrong side up?

Observatory for Oyunuma!

With trees, bushes and branches blocking the view, i didn't manage to secure a good photo of Oyunuma. At times like this, i really wish to have to have a drone!

A better yet not perfect photo; nevertheless, you can still see the smoke emitting from somewhere the top of an active volcano; Mt Hiyori.

Rather muddy path; hence, do remember to wear a good pair of hiking shoes. I didn't, thinking my sandals would be fine, and was thankful i didn't slip and injure myself!

No handrail; do descend carefully!

Finally, a running panel from the previous one! In this board, it was mentioned that precious plants grow around Oyunuma and the area known as noboribetsu primeval forest has been designated as a natural monument for quite a while.

Been a natural monument for how long? Since 1924 according to the answer on panel 7! It's a pity this was the last panel i chanced upon as the question on panel 7 mentioned that Mt Hiyori is named as such because fishermen rely on it to tell the weather (hiyori seems to refer to weather) and what does it mean if you see smoke.

Oku no Yu (奥の湯) - click here for more pictures!

After Oku no Yu would be the second most famous sight in noboribetsu; Oyunuma, the biggest thermal lake in Japan and one of the largest in the world.

Smoking Mt Hiyori - the question still bothers me; does it mean the weather is good if the active volcano continues to emit smoke?!

Taisho Jigoku (大正地獄) - with a 10-meter circumference, this geyser is known to be unpredictable and has the ability to reflect seven different colours.

Unfortunately, it's closed to the public due to erratic eruptions. I could have crossed over the low fence but when one is overseas, one shouldn't do stupid things.

Closer look of Taisho Jigoku from behind the safety barrier.

Arrival at Oyunuma Brook Natural Foot Bath - we had such a great time soaking out feet; we returned the next morning! Absolutely therapeutic for the body, feet and soul! For more photos, click here.

Out to the main road where we will proceed back to Takimoto Inn! As mentioned in one of the postings, we drove along this road from Lake Toya to Noboribetsu.

Parent-child blue demons to welcome visitors; father is a towering 5-meter giant whereas the kid is about 2-meter. If not for their skin colour, the horns on their head and the sharp canines, they would have been labelled as mere giants!

Sigh, we should have driven as there's a free carpark near Oyunuma Brook Natural Foot Bath and overseas time is always so precious.

A rundown dwelling on my right side.

One of many ryokans in the area; i believe the best would be dai ichi takimotokan as it offers the onsen heaven with seven types of bath and a view of Hell's Valley!

Back to Takimoto Inn with Geyser Park next to it!

In summary, we trekked for about 3.29 kilometers to cover Hell Valley, Oyunuma (大湯沼) and Oyunuma Brook Natural Foot Bath which took us a total of 2 hours.

This shall be my last post focusing on Lake Toya and once this is completed, i can proceed with the day 4 summary before proceeding to the much awaited day 5; when we stepped into the capital of the island prefecture and the fifth largest city of Japan!

Anyway, we woke up early as the rooms in Daiwa Ryokan didn't have curtains and i am the kind that sleeps better in darkness! Hence, i dragged Alex out of his futon and we took the car for a short exploration while the rest of my travel mates continued to sleep in!

After getting bored with the quietness of Lake Toya, i decided to drive further and stopped at this car park bordering an active volcano; Mt Usu.

It was so active; eruption has occurred four times from year 1900 to 2000 and during the eruption in 1943, a new mountain known as Shōwa-shinzan was created over a two years' period.

As you can see, the 398-meter tall mountain continues to smoke!

Parking fee of 500 yen would be applicable to park your car at the carpark; not cheap as it would have been converted to about S$6 by our Singapore standard.

We were too early though and no one came by to ask us to pay; i believe you can't save the parking fee by coming early, unless your intention is not to take the rope-way, as the parking attendant would likely approach you upon your return when the booth opens for business.

Drove to the other end of the carpark so that i can take this spectacular picture of the 733-meter tall Mt Usu with the rope-way track! Although i have indicated Mt Usu in my planned itinerary, i was unsure if we should take the ropeway as we just took the one at Otaru Mt. Tenguyama the day before!

We returned at 10.00 am and paid the 500 yen. :(

As expected, the attraction upon entry was Shōwa-Shinzan which is a great photo spot as the mountain wasn't big and you can easily capture its formation in one shoot and can still see the humans standing in front of it.

Informative panel on the UNESCO geopark.

Created during World War 2, the new mountain was initially kept a secret as it could be seen as a bad omen for the Japanese invasion. Maybe just for information - traditionally in Asian culture, natural disasters can be interpreted as a rejection of the current administration / rule / dynasty.

Further exploration for those who are interested.

With the slightly warmer weather, us Singaporeans prefer the cooler comfort and hence, we proceeded to the ropeway ticketing counter!

Admission at 1,500 yen an adult.

Useful information that would allow you to make a better judgment if you should pay for the tickets; aside from temperature and weather, you should take into consider the number of binoculars indicated for mountain view.

A model of the gondola lift system.

Information on Mt Usu, including an amazing picture of the eruption in 1977! From the picture, i also gathered that there's a change in the gondola lift even though i am unsure when the change was effected.

More informative panels, in Japanese.

Time to ascend the peak! Opened in 1965, the line stretches for about 1.3 kilometers, over two stations and the top-end of the station provides visitors with a view of Lake Toya, Shōwa-Shinzan and the crater of Mt Usu.

Each cabin can hold a staggering 106 persons and my primary legitimate concern was what if the volcano erupted when we took the ropeway and the rope snapped! A horror thought but i guess our era is blessed with advanced technology that can help predict a volcano eruption.

Views surrounding us on the ropeway; two of the pictures were taken from Alex's phone as i was taking a video facing the station on top of the mountain and i have only a pair of hands.

Pictures showing the views in different seasons! Hokkaido is extremely pretty and a Japan-fanatic friend of mine has already visited Hokkaido in almost all the seasons, except for spring.

Change in landscape due to the 1977 eruption!

Reaching the top; total ride was only about 6 minutes.

At first, i thought the ropeway would only open at 10.00 am and it's ridiculous for someone to pay almost S$20 to check out a place for less than 30 minutes! Turned out the ropeway opens from 8.00 am everyday!

Stepping out to the observatory!

Breathtaking view of Lake Toya and Shōwa-Shinzan; while the latter is less than a century old, the form is a grand lady that's over 100,000 years old.

One nugget of information about Lake Toya; despite the harsh freezing temperature during winter in Hokkaido, the lake never freezes.

Sign and information of Shōwa-Shinzan; to take better pictures, a selfie stick is strongly recommended as where we stood was almost doubled the height of Shōwa-Shinzan.

Like the above photo which was stolen from Alex's phone and published without his permission although we had a standing agreement that i can use photos of him in this blog...

The expected panorama!

Spot where the photos were taken before and after the eruption in 1977; in the past, the view came with a full view of Mt Yotei (the Mount Fuji lookalike). The eruption then actually expanded the crater to about 200 meters in the north and 20 meters to the east.

Actual summit of Mt Usu.

I am trying to think of something that resembles the rock on top and the best i can do is that it vaguely looks like standing bear; honestly, you can replace it with a dog too.

Seems like something will light up at night but the ropeway stops operations at about 6.00 pm; i am guessing this could be relation to an event. Maybe?

Insectorium that's cordoned off (aka do not enter).

Now, i had no idea what they were for and the group of us actually treated them like swords for a fun sword-fighting moment! Turned out they were walking sticks that would assist your legs in your trek towards the observatory of Mt Usu's crater!

Let's start; it's only a 7-minute walk!

Appeared much longer in reality......

Please stay on the path!

Hm..... think the signs were applicable only in winter! Guess that's the issue with administering a country with four seasons; it would be such a waste in resources if things were to be replaced 4 times a year.

More to go and they were stairs! My elder sister would likely curse and sweat under her breath as stairs were her greatest nemesis! Hello, you must give your heart a 'lift' sometimes - educational message brought to you by National Health Promotion Board.

Please don't over-exert yourselves! Do take a seat if you are feeling breathless and stop to breathe in the fresh air and take in the natural sights. :)

From far, they looked like green chillies!

Do stop, turn back and enjoy the views! Good to take a shot of your travel mates actually or have a wefie! The stairs appeared extremely steep even though personally it wasn't too much of an exhaustive effort; I suffered more when climbing Hallasan on Jeju Island.

The viewing platform!

Sign showing that it's the view of the original crater of Mt Usu - are you excited to see a lava flowing crater that continues to emit smoke like Shōwa-Shinzan?

Eh, i was a tad disappointed as what appeared in front of me was more a mere indentation that wouldn't have generated much of an interest once trees took over the space.

Information panel about the crater.

Panorama again!

There's a mountain trail circling the outer rim of the crater which was said to bring us closer to the crater. However, the journey is about 40 minutes on foot; precious time we could ill-afford.

Topographical changes from 1972 to 1999 shown via relatable photos; it's fascinating how things have changed over just less than three decades!

Crater was just one of the views on the observatory; if i have the fanciful 360 degrees camera, i might be able to show you more of the spectacle in one photo!

Like this view overlooking the uchiura bay.

Common one for Lake Toya and Shōwa-Shinzan; i took so many photos of the aforementioned that i am already showing a very reduced number in this posting!

After enjoying the splendid scenery and making the decision that we were going to give the outer rim trail a miss, it's time to return back to the gondola station.

Flora and fauna of Mt Usu.

Gondala station - we can't wait to step in as it was quite a walk for us pampered Singaporeans and it's always nice to have a sheltered place where we can indulge in cold drinks and ice cream!

Souvenir buying time! And if you are not keen, you may check out the interesting video that's shown at the Toya Caldera and Usu Volcano Global Geopark Mountaintop Disaster Prevention Theatre.

Or take pictures; yes, it's been seven months since my Hokkaido trip but for those who are planning for a vacation to Hokkaido in the upcoming summer, i guess what i shared/ would be sharing are still applicable. :)

Let's go!

Photos of the scenery ahead of me as the gondola lift brought us down to the foot of the mountain; it's much easier to take photographs than to shoot a video!

Want something more to make your 1,500 yen worth the cost of taking the ropeway? Educate yourself with pictures and more information on the geopark at the volcano village information centre.

Some samples for your reference.

Other places of attraction in close proximity of Mt Usu; i regretted not being able to check out the abandoned buildings that were left in ruins after the eruption in year 2000.

Volcano Eruption Centre?! Said to allow you to experience the power of a volcano eruption, i was excited; thinking it would be fun!

Not sure i needed more time as it was entirely boring - there were sounds of eruption and images from a television; nothing excited me and made me go wow. Nothing.

Souvenir shop again! I love it when samples are given as it would give us the incentive (or disincentive) to buy! A pity the cheese puffs didn't taste as good as the super ring snacks we have in Singapore; giving it a miss.

So tempted to get the melon or the corn... didn't bother as we were on our way for fruit picking at the nearby Sobetsu Fruit Village and it's best to leave more stomach space for the 'buffet'.

Last look of Shōwa-Shinzan!

Additional Information
There's a bear ranch literally next to the ropeway station at Mt Usu's foot. Compared to the bear park in Noboribetsu, access is much easier here since you don't have to take a separate cable.

Pricing to enter the bear ranch.

Treat for the bears; i am actually trying my best not to pay to patronize such businesses as i believe animals are better left for the wild even though i am in a ethical bind as well. Personally, the same should be said about snakes but given my fear for them, i would love for them to be kept away from the wild.

Anyway, i didn't pay to go into the bear ranch. Nevertheless, it's still an option in case you have put too many days to spend in Lake Toya and are in a fix on where to go.

Day 4 in Hokkaido - My 8 Days, 7 Nights (Mostly Self-Drive) Summer Trip to Japan

I am the type who can't go back to sleep once i see the sun and that's a major problem for me when sunrise is like 4am in Hokkaido and our room at Daiwa Ryokan didn't come with curtains! p.s. did like the netting though as they kept out the bugs.

As the day was still early and i didn't like to waste my time on the futon without being able to go back to dreamland, i decided to drive out to 7-11 convenience stall for a light breakfast.

Breakfast consisting of hot milk coffee in a can and Japanese rice balls! I even chose a darn good spot for breakfast where right in front of us was the iconic Nakajima Island of Lake Toya.

Onigiri with beef shigureni was pretty good with substantial filling although i very much preferred the satisfying egg mayo sandwich! There were so many selections at the convenience stores that even if i didn't have breakfast in any of my Hokkaido accommodations, i think i could still try an onigiri with a different filling every single day.

On our way back after a short exploration at the Usuzan ropeway; not so much the ropeway which hadn't open for business. However, Alex was totally in awe of this new mountain known as Shōwa-shinzan.

Went back to Lake Toya again; albeit another section where i realised Nakajima Island wasn't just ONE island and the one just in front of us was Kannon Island.

Got back to Daiwa Ryokan and prepared to leave. It was only when i took notice of these strips of sticker on the floor that it dawned on me that they were there to mask the defects!

Blocks of wood next to the hand bath outside Daiwa Ryokan; maybe they could be used to make a small bonfire, especially if the weather starts to turn cold?

Empty plot of land with many wild flowers that were commonly seen in our trip. I even had a separate posting on them here.

I usually don't check the bonnet of my car but something caught my attention!

A bee was stuck in the front fender and it was as dead as a dodo! Maybe because it was summer; there were many insects and throughout the five days i had the rented car, i counted quite a number of bees and even smashed butterflies and moths.

Leaving to seicomart as our travel mates would need breakfast to kick start the day! I was still full but i could definitely indulge in a serving of authentic Hokkaido milk!

Alex, as usual, got his favourite Glico Pocky sticks!

While chatting with our travel mates, Alex enthusiastically shared our early morning visit to Usu Volcano Global Geopark and got them persuaded to pay it a visit.

Think all of us didn't regret as the scenery was drop dead gorgeous; i even gained some knowledge about the preparedness of the community (via the disaster prevention theatre) as the region had been hit with four eruptions from year 1900 to 2000.

Just a short drive away from Mt Usu was the place where we enjoyed filling our stomach with cherries and blueberries for the price of just 880 yen a person; the fruit picking in Takashina Fruit Farm at Sobetsu Fruit Village!

Continuing our journey to the next destination on our itinerary; Noboribetsu!

Crossing over a stream; did i share that in summer, you can actually do water rafting in Hokkaido? We didn't plan for any as most of us are not adventurous and i think it can also be pretty pricey to do it in Japan as compared to Southeast Asian countries like Malaysia or Indonesia.

On a freakish high vehicular bridge!

Stopped the car at this area which looked like a carpark yet wasn't one. Could be a rest stop for visitors to stretch their legs and check out the scenery.

View wasn't much in this season, honestly.

As evidenced by the tyre marks on the ground, i guess some drivers were more keen to practice their drifting at the open space. Pretty good if you ask me.

Photos taken of the road; the drive was easy and there weren't many cars that we had encountered. p.s. Alex was the main driver whereas i am designated as the vehicle commander (and self assigned photographer).

Japanese shrine (Karurusuyakushi Shrine) with an interesting white torii.

I can't imagine i can take so many pictures when the journey between Sobetsu Fruit Village and Noboribetsu was less than an hour!

Long accustomed to the greenery on the mountains, this anomaly on the hilltop was a topic starter in the boring car ride. According to google map, i think we were closing in to Noboribetsu.

The existence of large hotels confirmed that we were near!

I recognized this view from the google map street view and knew exactly where we should turn; to the right where our accommodation in Noboribetsu, Takimoto Inn, stood!

Parking was opposite the inn and as it was past lunch time, it's a matter of chop chop registered with the reception counter on level two, chop chop checked in to our wonderful room and chop chop took a quick bath in the in-room shower!

After which was deliberating on where to have lunch! Eventually settled it at a izakaya (informal Japanese pub) with my first authentic gyu don in Japan!

Walking after a meal aids in digestion although before we took on the walking trail, let's check out the sengen park (geyser) with its colourful, gigantic cudgels.

Following which would be the 2-hour long walking trail that brought us to notable attractions in Noboribetsu; Hell Valley (地獄谷)Oyunuma (大湯沼)Oku no Yu (奥の湯) and Oyunuma Brook Natural Foot Bath

Guess what we need after all the walking?! Food obviously and once again, the group of six couldn't decide what to have and we eventually stepped into a smoky restaurant, Isekura (いせくら), which served charcoal grill food. Funnily, we didn't order any grilled stuff.

Exploring the Gokuraku Shopping Street, the main commercial street at the onsen town of Noboribetsu where we had our lunch and dinner. Aside from souvenir stores, there's also a humongous statue of the king of hell!

Day four was a fun-filled day with the likes of fruit picking and the natural foot bath but the biggest highlight of my Hokkaido trip was experiencing Japanese onsen! I was blessed to be granted admission to Onsen Heaven at Dai-ichi Takimotokan as it is a sister accommodation to Takimoto Inn.

Once i got over the shyness of being naked, the overall experience was just epic; from soaking in the seven different spas, from indoors to outdoors, from hot to cold etc to the usage of branded horse oil shower gel and shampoo. I am sorry i can't take pictures for decency and privacy reasons but i am so looking forward to experiencing my next onsen.

After the satisfying soak, we chanced upon the musical giant cudgel at Dai-ichi Takimotokan. As it was a bit late and i needed to get something from the car, we didn't stay throughout the performance.

Quite creepy with deserted streets and a cloudy sky with a full moon above us; but we were in a relaxed mood after the onsen and the sleep that night turned out to be so good!

Ah Di Durian Stall in Ang Mo Kio - The Secret Place Where I Satisfy My Durian Craving @ Block 347, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 [Singapore]

There was this durian stall that i have patronised no less than four times since December 2017 and it's about time for me to share its location with everyone on this blog!

Those familiar with the famous hualong fishhead steamboat would find it a 'chicken feet' to locate the store as it's literally right next to the coffee shop housing the popular fishhead steamboat stall.

Why am i obsessed with this particular durian makeshift store? For the obvious reason that the durians i purchased so far from the boss were all satisfyingly good!

Another key determinant is that Ah Di 阿迪 (that's the name of the boss, i think, and not to be confused with another durian seller, Ah Di 阿第, who is based in Dempsey) is friendly to its customers and unlike some of the durian sellers, you can feel he's not out to cheat your money; and he appeared to have a lot of regular purchasers!

It's only slightly past 6.00 pm and i can see only about 30 durians on the table! Darn, i shouldn't have taken my dinner first; i.e. satay from soon lee heng and white beehoon from hualong. :(

Our favourite golden phoenix and cat mountain king were already sold out; as evidenced by the empty baskets. Actually, i am not very particular when it comes to the species but my mom enjoys the two aforementioned durian species and as the filial son, i tried to accommodate to what she likes.

We didn't have much of a choice as the craving for durians was unbearable and had to make do with D13 which is also known as red prawn (ang hae / 红虾). Pricing was cheaper for D13 at S$10 a kilogram.

Using the blade of his trusty parang knife, Ah Di gave the durian spiky husk a few hits to determine its quality and placed two on the weighing machine; about 2.5 kilograms!

Most customers would either request for the whole durians for takeaway or for the seeds to be removed and placed in a styrofoam box; for my family, we like to eat the durians on the spot! As it was drizzling, Ah Di kindly allowed us to use the empty overturned basket that he used to display the durians!

The yellow meat surrounding the seeds was fleshy and not very fibrous and while the seeds were not as flat and thin like cat mountain king (as forewarned by Ah Di) , it surprisingly didn't taste as sweet as i thought red prawn species would typically be.

Two weren't sufficient and we got a third durian! So much for complaining that i was bloody full and the maximum we should have mustn't extend beyond two!

In less than fifteen minutes, the store's durian stock had dwindled to less than 10; with one regular customer purchasing eight durians in one go!

Now, a piece of advice from me - do call Ah Di at 9003-7928 beforehand if you decide to go to his store as i was left disappointed once when i dropped by, thinking i would be able to indulge in some durians; only to find it closed.

The Famous / Infamous Soi Bangla - Before The Sun Sets @ Phuket [Thailand]

Think of Phuket Island and Patong Beach is likely going to pop up in the minds of many seasoned travellers! However, it's not just the beach that people remember; the walking street pretty close by has gained quite a reputation too!

Technically, Bangla Road will only be converted to a walking street after 6pm and before then, please exercise caution against the vehicles that continue to take priority.

In the daytime, when i checked out the place on the very first day of my Phuket trip, it didn't appear any different from a typical busy street in Bangkok; except for maybe that large TV screen placed across the street.

Even though the night had yet to start, some were already gearing for the party! Those with kids appeared to be more in a hurry to go back to the comfort of their hotels before the vices took over.

A lot of pubs and clubs flanked both side of the street and that's merely a visual attraction for someone like who don't quite enjoy drinking. I don't think i should also since my very decent dad was with me too!

There were shops other than bars and pubs and clubs.

I should have purchased a cigar to get a feel of how it tastes like! As i was busy with photo taking, i actually didn't realise she was offering cigarettes and cigars in one basket!

Fruits for sale - i don't dare to buy them as food handling is always contentious when it comes to street food and my tummy is known to be overly sensitive.

Moulin Rouge - its design was an immediate drawer and the name reminded me of a same-named movie with an extremely catchy song; "Lady Marmalade". By the way, reviews were not fantastic and it's ranked #64 out of 70 Nightlife in Patong on TripAdvisor.

In many nightlife establishments, i noticed bars that ran from floor to ceiling and thought they were for decorative purposes until i saw what they were used for, at night.

Shall give the answer in my posting for Bangla street at night!

Street hawkers in case the hunger bug pesters you. Interestingly, you can get packs of fresh looking vegetables in such a touristy place.

Tattoo parlour - i was tempted to have a body tattoo during my rebellious teenage years but now that i am much older, i don't really care much for it especially if it's more difficult to enter the onsen when i am in Japan

Knowing that there were likely families with kids who would visit Bangla Street out of curiousity; it does make sense to have commercial activities appropriate and suitable for them. Guess some high individuals would likely pay it a visit too since it's open till the ungodly 3am!

The huge screen showing advertisements, messages, announcements and i think a speech by the current prime minister in Thailand. No indication of any height restriction for vehicles.

CCTVs mounted below the huge ass television!

Tiger Night Club - you can never miss it and it would probably stopp you in our tracks. The tiger statues were larger than real ones and i am glad they were not animatronics.

They looked more fearsome in the daytime.

Although i am not into partying, i do enjoy the occasional beer to lighten the mood and the promotional price during happy hours was only 80 baht a bottle!

Day was still young but the street peddlers were already in position to sell you the eye-popping ping pong show! I have read online that a lot of them were scams with astronomically priced drinks; hence, i didn't even bother.

Coming to the end of Bangla Road with Tai Pan night club just across the main road.

A picture of dad and Alex to show that we were there! p.s. not so much an eye opener for us as there's a stark difference in atmosphere between day and night. More would be updated in the upcoming post!

Onsen Heaven - The Unforgettable Hot Spring Experience @ Dai-ichi Takimotokan in Norboribetsu [Hokkaido, Japan]

What's the most unforgettable activity for my inaugural Japan trip (to Hokkaido)? My answer will be the amazing hot spring experience at the onsen heaven in Dai-ichi Takimotokan!

As photo-taking is disallowed in the onsen, i could only rely on this scaled down model that's pretty accurate on the different baths i encountered in my two visits.

Before you step into the respective male / female onsen, collect the towels from the main counter in the middle of onsen heaven. As Takimoto Inn is the sister accommodation of Dai-ichi Takimotokan, you just need to show your room key to exchange for the towels and gain access to onsen heaven.

The men's area - right side is the changing area although i do remember a line of lockers where we can lock up our valuables like mobile hands, wallets. Section in the middle would be the washing area before you enter the baths; do pamper your body and hair by making use of the luxurious horse-oil shower gel and shampoo that were provided for free!

For details and benefits on the seven bath types available in onsen heaven, click here. Temperature for most was acceptable except for the demon spa (arrow red) - i can feel that my foot were being slowly cooked when i tested the water which was piped directly from hell valley; if i recall, the temperature was about 42 degrees celcius although it felt way higher!

There's also another level before with an outdoor area. It can be quite chilly if you go at night, as we did on our first visit. Pity we didn't thinking of checking out the next morning as i have the feeling we might be able to soak in the scenery of hell valley.

After cleaning up at the washing area, you may dress up quickly (the female housekeepers prowl the area without a care of whether you are fully naked) and take advantage of the dressing counters where you can find hair tonic, hair dryer, disposable shavers, toothbrushes etc. I basically can throw myself into bed without a final wash!

Body and mind were satisfyingly relaxed after the onsen.

To further cleanse the soul, step into the traditional Japanese garden of Dai-ichi Takimotokan and soak in the soothing outdoor environment!

Super shiok!

Bangla Street at Night - Happening, Lively, Vibrant @ Phuket [Thailand]

$

Compared to the day, Bangla road is a lot wilder at night with an electrifying vibe that's definitely an eye opener for someone like me who isn't into the clubbing / drinking scene.

Having heard so much about Soi Bangla, i honestly didn't want to shock my dad; hence, i ventured out with Alex on my second night in Phuket to the popular walking street as it's only about 10-minute stroll from the hotel we stayed at.

I walked along the street three nights in a row and the pictures shown in this posting was across two nights; Saturday was the most crowded whereas Monday was the most boring with not much of a crowd.

Pictures were taken using my iPhone 7 plus; not exactly a good choice as quality was relatively compromised but i think hauling a huge ass DSLR might attract too much attraction and maybe result in a violent expulsion from the street of vices!

Remember the floor to ceiling metal poles i mentioned here? They were used exclusively by pole dancers when the sun sets and on a busy night (like Saturday), all the poles were 'taken'!

The iconic Tiger Night Club was bathed in artificial lighting that appeared to reduce its ferociousness. The felines looked so much better in daytime.

Moulin Rouge - the glass compartment had a person dancing around the pole in skimpy wear; sure to attract lingering stares from many men! Bewarn that the place didn't have a favourable review on TripAdvisor.

Russian beauties accosting the men to step into their 'arena'.

You may also bump into flamboyant characters with eye-popping attire; from my understanding, you can take a picture with them for a nominal fee!

An erotic club - what goes behind the doors? I have no idea but my research on Phuket had taught me to steer clear of places behind closed doors as there's a high chance of being scammed and / or being charged exorbitant prices; p.s. high doesn't equate to definitely.

Crowd on Saturday; past 10 pm.

Bangla road again on Sunday which featured a much reduced crowd; the situation worsened on Monday, i personally feel although it could be because i went too early at about 8 plus pm.

However, the lack of crowds made it easier to have a drink! The one thing i can't stand is the loud music where i can't even hear myself talk!

An empty glass enclosure on the second level. I actually didn't notice the logo on the glass until i came back to Singapore and zoom in for a better look; it's a sign for no-camera. Shit!

Those not into the scene would be glad to know of better alternatives; like McDonald's with its mascot making a Thai 'wai' and burgers that consist of pork burger patties (i.e. Samurai Burger).

You can enjoy a VR for 100 baht or have your portrait drawn.

A shop selling bags; i am unsure if it can survive as i don't think a partying person would want to get a handbag. Maybe they would if they are drunk. Anyway, purpose of the picture was to show you the pull up bar game that cost 100 baht an attempt; hang on for two minutes for a bar and you get a bottle of whisky!

Party away with these cute, plastic head-gears!

Catch a performance by this group of break dancers! This used to be quite popular when i was a teenager but i think the authorities didn't quite like it when the dancers attracted people to crowd around; line dancing (for the older generation) was way more palatable.

Next up shall be jungceylon shopping mall right across the main road bordering the end of Soi Bangla. Those who wish to do some shopping should pay it a visit as it has the Big C supermarket!

Bibi River behind Log House Wagyu Bibi Restaurant - A Snake Encounter! @ Hokkaido [Japan]

$

After a scrumptious meal at Log House Wagyu Bibi Restaurant, i thought it would be nice for us to just chill out at this beautiful spot behind Hokkaido's best steak restaurant.

Guess it must be popular as a bench was purposely placed there. The stream in front is known as Bibi river and it runs across one of Hokkaido's three great plains; Yufutsu plains. If you have the time, you could even canoe down the river. Read here for more information.

I am just happy to be in the peaceful environment despite the fact that our location is just a mere two kilometers from New Chitose International Airport!

Bibi River is known to be shallow and we can clearly see the arm-length fishes lurking in the pretty clear water. By the way, Bibi means beautiful. .

A surprising splash of colour in the water.

Lucky golden carp? For all you know, it could be a rarity in the area!

I noticed a wooden staircase descending into the river and was about to step closer when i heard some rustling to the side. Taking a glance to my left side, i froze.

What the hell?!?!?! A snake?!?!!? :( Given my deep set fear of snakes, my mind went blank although i could still manage a few pictures. To be frank, the poor guy / gal was as shocked to see me too.

It made the first move by slithering away while i continue to freeze on the spot for a few more seconds. Honestly, i don't know what i would have done if it crawls towards me.

By the time i got to my senses, i was already this far from the spot! Given my penchant to attract unfortunate incidents when i am overseas, i really thought this would result in a snake bite!

Almost Burned Down My Kitchen! #cavinkitchen

Yes, i almost burned down my kitchen this morning and as i was in a haste, no picture was taken until things have somewhat settled down; appended above was a photo of my stove with a fire blanket and a wet table cloth over a sauce pot.

The pot continued to spew out smoke which was unbearable to breathe in and i half suspected neighbours opposite my block were about to call 995 if it were to thicken!

melted butter was still boiling after 15 minutes
Background - i needed melted butter for a bake and totally forgot about the fire on the stove when i returned back to my blogging. Thankfully, i didn't switch on the music and heard the loud pop that got me dashing out of the bedroom to investigate!

Due to the butter, the pot had also started burning up (yes, flames were surrounding the corelle bowl) and that's when the training i took as a member of my workplace fire safety committee kicked in; i threw the fire blanket over the sauce pot.

Condition of the sauce pot afterwards. Just a note - throwing water on a burning pot can be disastrous; hence, eliminate the fire by removing the oxygen via a fire blanket and wait for everything to cool down.

Amazingly, i managed to do a decent job scrubbing the pot and it actually looked no difference from before the fire! I actually used it to boil eggs after its cleanup and thank god; no leak!

And i still need my melted butter. p.s. turned out the recipe was asking for room temperature butter which means i have utterly wasted my time!

=====

Fire blanket is for one-time use which means i have to purchase another one! Do invest in one for yourself or for your family. It was a blessing for me obviously and to think that i used to say kitchen fire will never happen to me since i don't do heavy cooking!

Geologic Electronic Dartboard (ED 310) from Decathlon - Affordable and Nice to Have at Home!

Following the visit to the Live Turtle and Tortoise Museum at Singapore's Chinese Garden, i brought my dad to shop at Decathlon Joo Koon where he was most pleased with the purchase of a pair of walking shoes!

Anyway, i was exploring towards the end of the retail section and was about to make a u-turn back to the entrance when something attracted my attention.

Dartboards for sale! And they ranged from the kiddish ones that used balls surrounded by Velcro and the more legit ones; I was of course pulled by the pricing of S$14.90 as it's definitely well within my budget.

I saw the same one at my uncle's place in the lunar new year celebration two months back and Jovyn appeared to show some talent for darting! Hence, i thought it would be good to buy one for the kids so that they can have more things to play with when they drop by my house.

As i was about to grab the bestseller (the S$14.90 one) from the rack, the corner of my eye caught of the dartboard that's one display. With a simple electronic display, there were holders for the darts and it even has the ability to factor in multi-players and dart games like 301, cricket etc!

Even though it was priced at close to S$45, i took it instead of the bestseller as i personally feel that it's a steal; i recalled Alex wanting to pay about S$200 for a similar one a few years back.

Remember, you need nails to hook the dartboard on your wall and i sought the good advice from a staff at HomeFix Northpoint for the proper nails. After which would be the inevitable damage on my beloved wall due to my inexperience and the constant hammering which got my next door neighbour knocking on my door!

Six soft-tipped darts were included in the box! Oh, before i forgot, you do need to buy 3 AA-sized batteries to power the dartboard for the display and the sound for the games.

Done and super pleased with the Geologic dartboard!

At the moment, i put it up at the empty wall next to the kitchen door; a temporary location as the space is reserved for a full height cabinet that shall house my growing collection of absolut vodka

Time to play and i must say that in the almost one month since we got the dartboard, my house mate and i competed almost every day! They said practice makes perfect right?

Not for me as i am like mr random capable (Gary from Running Man); i could sometimes hit bull's eye three times in a row but most of the times, the darts flew all over the place!

Did i mention that you can close the dart board?

Where to Buy
You can buy from either the physical stores of Decathlon or visit their website to order the dartboard for delivery (minimum S$60) or self collect. Their most centralized store is at City Square Mall in Little India!

Yuzawa Shrine (湯沢神社) @ Noboribetsu [Hokkaido, Japan]

Most people would have noticed the light red torii on the side of the road leading to Hell Valley but would prefer to spend their time at Noboribetsu's signature attraction instead, especially given the lack of time.

The same goes for me and i only got to explore the Japanese shrine, known as Yuzawa, early next morning when the weather was cool and no one seemed to be up.

Halfway up the flight of stairs was a branch off for another staircase.

Interestingly, the stone lanterns in front were bigger in comparison to the petite wooden shrine right behind. Other than that, i thought the grave for Tan Tock Seng in Singapore is more fascinating.

Sitting on a bed of rocks, the label on top indicated 三吉神社 which translates into the name of the shrine whereas the bottom characters seem to refer to a donation box. Hm........ Since i don't understand the language, i am not going to second-guess what it's supposed to be.

Time to continue our climb up the stairs and check out the main shrine we came for!

Aesthetically, i feel that the modern building on the left had somewhat blocked the facing of the main shrine. It's like hiking up to the top of a mountain only to see the beautiful view blocked by a man-made structure.

Before praying at a Shinto shrine, devotees are required to wash up but without any instruction, i was at a loss and chose to just concentrate on photo taking instead.

Stickers on the roof of the washing area; not vandalism i feel as you don't see outrageous designs / messages. Don't think they were talismans too.

Memorial plaques?

Side view of Yuzawa Shrine; said to be built by Kinzo Takimoto. Does the name ring a bell? It's the same man who established Dai-ichi Takimotokan as a small inn back in 1858!

Most Shinto shrines appear to look more like a typical wooden home, with its doors closed. Not hospitable in my opinion as i always like to see what's behind closed doors!

昭和61年 refers to the 61th year of the Showa reign under Emperor Hirohito - in the gregorian calendar that we are better comfortable with; the year refers to 1986.

I believe there's some customary ritual i am supposed to undertake before i ring the bell but since i am not aware of any and there's no one around, i shook the rope for fun!

Aside from Alex, this crow was the only living creature i chanced upon.

Votive tablets with words of blessings written on them. At this point, i wasn't aware of the purpose for the pieces of paper that were knotted up. I only know what they are when i checked out the Hokkaido Shrine the next day.

The same kind of knotted papers on tree branches. To me then, i thought its purpose would be similar to the yellow strings tied to trees near the Datok Kong shrine at Kusu Island.

Alex was getting bored. According to some reviews, this shrine was extremely beautiful in winter and in autumn when the leaves of the surrounding trees turned red!

Pillars with the words "may peace prevail on earth" inscribed in different languages like English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, French, Spanish etc.

Going Crazy with Outlet Shopping at Mitsui Outlet Park in Sapporo Kitahiroshima @ Hokkaido [Japan]

I experienced both happiness and sadness after my very first outlet shopping (the visit to Johor Premium Outlets was actually four months later); former because i had a great time and bought quite a number of things at a good deal.

Sad because we only allocated two hours and couldn't extend any further as we needed to return the rented car in central Sapporo on the same day at a designated time!

Anyway, ample parking for us as it was a lull Tuesday afternoon. Honestly, i thought the planned two-hour stay was too long a time as i am not into branded stuff and only put this into the itinerary as i had never known what outlet shopping was all about.

To me, it should be similar to what we have in Singapore (for example, IMM, Changi City Point); albeit of a much larger scale for which the entire shopping mall would be catered entirely for discounted and / or off-season products.

Rather empty mall - the general atmosphere is as expected; quite the same as IMM or Changi City Point and i was, in fact, getting a bit bored as i am pretty quick when it comes to window shopping and dislike having to loiter insanely long at one shop.

Those who visited during Hokkaido's cold winter would welcome the everything-is-indoor setting; it will be warm and definitely a nice respite from all the snow and finger-biting cold.

A few of the 180 brands that's spread out over two buildings with a square area of 30,000 m²! Unfortunately, the lack of time means i didn't venture beyond the first building!

Thank god i am only into Southeast Asian coffee!

CROCS - i absolutely love the brand as shoes are usually light and relatively durable given my rough handling! I didn't purchase any as i still have two spanking new pairs at home.

Pricing of the New Balance shoes; as foreigners, we are entitled to tax rebates (8%) upon attainment of a minimal 'spent' amount which i think is 5,000 yen (about S$62). Hence, please remember to bring along your passport!

Kipling bags; i was tasked by my mom to get a purple one for her! As i don't have a good eye for designs, i had to send a whatsapp to my family's group chat for a confirmation! At the very least, my mom is super pleased with the bag and frequently brings it out.

An aviation / aeronautic exhibition on the ground floor.

While i was busy in the Kipling store, Alex ventured alone to the Nike store and before i knew it, he got two pairs of the same design as it was one for one and he didn't like the other colours.

You know what's the best thing? He had the actual same pair at home which means he now has three of the same kind in the shoe cabinet!

I was looking forward to checking out the Onitsuka Tiger outlet!

Having heard so much about it from the Great Kon for like more than ten years, i finally got a pair which i absolutely didn't regret buying! Maybe i should have gotten another pair of the same design; just like Alex.

Onitsuka Tiger is available at Changi City Point but the average price (confirmed as of last Sunday) was about S$150; the pair i got cost less than S$100!

Temptation mode activated when i spotted this pair at the counter; at 6,000 yen (S$80), it's still within my budget. In my mind, to pay over S$100 for a pair of shoes is ridiculous! Sadly, it didn't have my size. :(

My craziest overseas purchase so far - i got two tempur pillows at a huge discount compared to what i would be paying in Singapore from their official store and hauled them back home! The original price in Singapore is S$319 and i paid less than that amount for two pillows!

I wish i would be back soon!
