Black House Burgers - Top 10 (Out of 871 Restaurants in Kuta) @ Bali [Indonesia] #blackhouseburgers

$

Befitting its label as touristy area, Kuta has a ton of restaurants serving a wide variety of cuisines for travellers to choose from. I am confused given the sheer number and relied heavily on the recommendations from Trip Advisor.

I wasn't seeking specifically for burgers but 900 over reviews for the Black House Burgers appeared rather legit and the pricing wasn't a total ripoff (at least compared to what we have in Singapore).

Literally a hole in the wall and for that good of a review score; the restaurant was empty except for two customers who coincidentally were Alex's colleagues!

Non-air-conditioned setting even though it wasn't that bad when we visited as the sky was overcast. Well, to be frankly, the weather had not been great in the past few days we were in Bali.

Display of camera models over the past few decades; due to the bounced lighting, the painted-on pictures didn't look too realistic in the above photograph.

Tables and chairs made from disused oil drums!

Quirky design aside, i was most impressed with the staff members; they served with a smile and even willingly passed me the WiFi password without me asking for it!

There were so many things i wanted to try beside the burgers; there were the awesome fries (potapork, hot jack, beefy bucks) and the 100% real fruit juices (less than S$2 a cup)! Pity my tummy was still digesting the nasi campur i had at Made's Warung three hours before. :(

Serviettes, cutlery, pepper and salt were placed on an aluminum tin on every table; i only realised later that it was baking tin and the eatery was using them as serving trays too! That's blasphemous for anyone who enjoys baking!

Need more sauces (mustard, tomato, chilli, BBQ, thousand island dressing, mayo etc)? Get them from the sauce station at the corner. Long term stayers can consider getting the loyalty-stamp card for extra freebies!

The A-Bomb - sometimes, i don't really get the names of dishes on the menu. I presume that the A-Bomb refers to Atomic Bomb and there's absolutely nothing terrifying from the burger. And we didn't explode too after taking a bite.

I can hardly taste the chicken with the generous layer of caramelised onions. Don't get me wrong, i love caramelised onions and hope they could be included in every burger; simply to enhance the sweetness! However, the chicken patty failed to surprise and the toughness didn't help.

Bonnie & Clyde - Alex's colleagues recommended this with a footnote; be careful of the bits of bones which had the potential to get stuck in between your teeth. An advice worth taking as they are dentists and we all know how expensive dental work is. p.s. Alex loves the crispy crinkle-cut French fries!

So what's between the soft charcoal burger bun with a touch of sweetness (and could have benefited from more butter)? Braised pork ribs, crispy wanton skin (imagine the cackling sound as you chomp down the burger), caramelised onions, button mushrooms, sliced tomatoes and a sunny side up with a runny yolk that drools when you bite through.

Don't be afraid of the bones as the braised pork ribs were impossibly tender and the ribs broke into tiny pieces without any resistance. I love the taste of the braised pork ribs as it's like digging into a slab of juicy BBQ pork ribs! Absolutely delish!

Noodle Place Restaurant (華苑面粥小廚) @ Orchard Gateway [Singapore]

$

There are so many dining establishments along Orchard Road that i don't usually give much thought about what to eat, and especially not when i am with my sisters and mom since they have dietary preferences.

Hence, i didn't raise any objection when my sister suggested checking out this noodle house at Orchard Gateway that's super near the exit of Somerset MRT station. Major regret as i didn't realize a single bowl of shrimp wanton noodle was so pricey!

Well, it's supposed to serve authentic Hong Kong cuisine which includes their signature roast meat, congee and noodles. Never try, never know and my sister did notice the place being crowded during mealtimes.

Shrimp Wanton Noodle (鮮蝦雲吞麵)- the noodles had a rubber band texture that was rather appealing although many would likely comment about the strong akaline taste that didn't weaken even after i mixed up everything.

I had the opportunity to try Mak's Noodle at Centrepoint mall before and in comparison, the soup was less flavourful and the shrimp wantons were pretty dry and unappetizing. Basically no wow factor here to make me feel that the S$9 we paid for (which has not included GST and service charge) was worth it.

Shredded Chili Pork Noodle (京都炸醬麵) - this differed from the Korean style 炸醬麵 that we have been accustomed to and the meat tasted like minced, saucy char siew. To put it in context, same price as my shrimp wanton noodle and i would very much rather had this as my meal.

Seven Treasures Pork Congee (状元及第粥) - no idea what the seven treasures were but how the hell did the porridge manage to get so thick and with all the grains dissolved?! That's like cooking witchcraft! Mom liked it whereas i prefer my porridge to have able-to-taste grains in it.

Triple Mixed Roast Meat (烧味三拼) - since Hong Kong is famous for their roast delights, it's a must for us to have some and since we couldn't decide if we should go for roast pork, roast pork or char siew (barbecued pork), we thought having a mixed platter (just like what we did in You Kee) would be the best option!

Roast duck was the best with a juicy bite that's best dipped in the sour plum sauce. Roast pork was a disappointment; not crispy and can benefit from reduced salt.

Char siew was decent and i would prefer it to be sweeter. Absolutely no fight against the crystal char siew in You Kee (Malaysia) and Kay Lee (Singapore).

Flaming Don (烤丼) - Signature Flaming Chicken Don @ Bugis + [Singapore]

You like grilled meat? I do and have no qualm having it every meal if not for the fact that it's expensive and not healthy for the body.

Having said that, i do crave for grilled meat every now and then and when i couldn't quite decide what to have for lunch one afternoon at Bugis +, i decided to give flaming don on level five of the shopping mall a try.

It's indeed disturbing to see an almost empty restaurant at noon but i did realize in recent months that businesses at bugis, orchard road etc are facing a lull on Sundays. Anyway, i am prepared to review the food, for better or for worse.

Ordering was via the self service kiosk where payment can be made at the same time without the need for a person to man it; the current trend has no doubt relieved the manpower stress for the dining establishments although at the same time, some might lament the lack of a human interaction.

Note the queue number on your receipt.

Proceed to the soup and drink counter and keep in mind your queue number when it appears on the television screen. As with most self-service eateries, you have to collect your own food.

Top up S$1.99 to make your meal a set with free flow drinks and miso soup! Aside from tea, there is coca cola, sprite, fanta grape, minute maid and heaven and earth. Remember, you can take as many times as you want!

Same counter for you to collect your cutlery, serviettes and choose from the five types of sauces. What are the sauces for? I have no idea as i didn't take any and the food i had wasn't bland to warrant extra sauces.

Here's my food which includes my Signature Flaming Chicken Don, the chawanmushi and the chilled tofu with miso goma dressing. Jovyn and Jerald were with me and even though they had a late breakfast, i thought it's best to have extra, just in case.

Nothing to complain about the miso soup and well, drinks would be drinks and it's not as if the drinks were specially prepared. But to drink my fill, i gulped a few cups of minute maid orange juice!

Chawanmushi was pretty decent and cost only S$2.90. I think i should really try to make this at home myself as i heard it wasn't difficult.

Chilled tofu with miso goma dressing isn't something i will order usually although i can make an exception when i am with Jovyn, who is a tofu person. The dressing was too salty in my opinion.

Now on the signature flaming chicken don - visually, it wouldn't look out of place from a normal teriyaki chicken don. However, the perfect onsen egg would be the deal maker.

As you can see, once you mix up everything, the texture would be relatively wet due to the onsen egg and when coupled with the generous sauce (teriyaki i think), i do like what i had. It wasn't mind-blowing amazing but it's a comfortable meal with well-grilled chicken.

And you know what?
The kids took a bite and decided to TAKE OVER my lunch!

Being the kind uncle i am, i didn't have much choice but to order another bowl of chicken don for them! If i have known they were to need food, i would have opted for much cheaper hawker food! I am kind but stingy.

Oh, do remember to return your used utensils and tray.

Dogs in Kuta @ Bali [Indonesia]

$

Some of you might have been shocked by the poor condition of dogs i highlighted in my post here which centered mostly on the canines at Sukawati Art Market.

The situation at Kuta was a lot better and i did chance upon quite a few dogs in my short 4-day trip to Bali; they were better groomed and i couldn't quite confirm if they were strays or pet dogs.

Pure-breeds had a higher chance of being identified as a pet dog as in the case of the miniature pinscher above which appeared to be guarding the canang sari, although i did see it dashing out from a home.

A stray i guess but it did have a purple ribbon tied across its neck. At the point of my visit, there were a few online articles talking about dog meat satay in Bali that was allegedly passed off as chicken or beef. How authentic is the news? I took it with a pinch of salt even though i did remain guarded, just in case.

It's hard to imagine as the dogs were well taken care of and if it has been prevalent for quite some time, i would imagine the canines to be a lot of suspicious of humans, which didn't seem to be the case.

Those terrified of dogs would be pleased to note that i didn't encounter any incident of aggression in my four days there; the dogs pretty much kept to themselves;

Some, apparently, have a rather good life.

I was expecting a bark from this little fellow; which would be strange as it was a pet dog from one of the commercial entities. Why strange? Would you keep a barking dog in your shop when you need the business?

Last picture - a dog that looked liked it was being punished by its owner. In the beginning, it was just looking ahead and didn't dare to walk in to the shop. Guess my shutter clicks attracted its attention!

LeTAO Cheese Cake Lab along Sakaimachi Street - Double Fromage Cheesecake, Lab Lab Choux etc @ Otaru [Hokkaido, Japan] #LeTAO #Otaru

Before i embarked on my trip to Hokkaido, kindhearted friends had already highlighted things i should do and things i should eat; including the numerous desserts i could find along the main shopping street along Sakaimachi Street in Otaru!

At my age, the major issue is that i am no longer able to eat as much as i could; hence, i didn't venture beyond the incredibly famous LeTao! Actually, i did attempt to check out Rokkatei but the store had literally sold out everything as it was close to the end of operation hours.

Anyway, the desserts at LeTao were too pretty to ignore and i had a hard time contemplating what i should have! Priority was definitely the popularity number one double fromage cheesecake even though the season special, melon double fromage, looked extremely appetising too!

Let's have a bit of something, including the store-limited lab lab choux! Advantage of travelling with a group - we had the stomach (and financial capability) to order more for sharing.

Lab Lab Choux- choux pastry shell with custard cream and cream cheese taking up the middle; i was expecting this to be better than beard papa and vanilla cream puff from Tampopo.

Sadly, the choux pastry was too hard for my liking and there was a stale aftertaste that simply didn't make the cut. Saving grace were the custard cream and cream cheese which were nice to enjoy on their own.

Double Fromage Cheese Cake - this wasn't as cheesy as i thought it should be and in comparison to the same type of dessert we had at Furano Delice Honten; this paled in comparison! There wasn't the desirable richness even though to be fair, the one at Furano Delice Honten is the best cheesecake i ever had.

Melon Double Fromage - in a way similar to the double fromage cheese cake, this melon range was overbearingly sweet and ranked the least favourite among the six of us. Guess we all subconsciously toe the government line to reduce the sugar intake in our diet!

Leisure Walking in Kuta - Jl Pantai Kuta to Jl Legian Kaja to Jalan Benesari @ Bali [Indonesia]

Those who have travelled with me before would be aware that i love to walk all over the place and it's no exception when i was in Bali! There were so many brick and mortar shops by the roadside; i knew i die die must check some of them out before my flight back to Singapore!

Can you imagine that this Jl Pantai Kuta road (i would have called it a lane) is the only vehicular ingress for the world famous Kuta beach?! It's effectively a one-lane, one-way street and that could explain why we missed our flight later that evening.

Cute miniature pinscher spotted on the street! Dogs at Kuta were better groomed than those i found at Sukawati Art Market; unlike places like Bangkok, i didn't notice any "bombs" littering the floor.

Dreamcatchers - even though it's a native american thingy, nothing's a cultural barrier so long it brings in the dollars. Speaking of which, i have been pretty restless at night recently and maybe i should purchase one.

These snippets of heartwarming advice written on wood planks would brighten my home boring, white walls. Pity, my concept is more black and white and even if i can bring in splashes of colour, i prefer photographs shot by me and there were tons to choose from in my hard disk.

I actually walked along Jl Pantai Kuta on an almost daily basis and it's where Smart Spa and Made's Warung were located. Further down would be the place where i had my first taste of Balinese's Babi Guling and the barbershop where Alex had his haircut.

Temple or private praying grounds? I am not sure about the first one as there was a gate but the second one is most likely private property with a walled boundary.

Let's continue with Jl Legian Kaja; a notable road that stretched for almost three kilometers until Seminyak, another popular district said to be less touristy than Kuta.

Given the length of the road and the fact that shophouses flanked both sides of the road, you would be pleased to know that there were plenty of souvenir shops where you can bargain crazily. As mentioned in earlier postings, do check out the pricing at the supermarkets (e.g. at Beachwalk shopping centre) first as a point of reference for bargaining.

Mosaic bowls, mosaic elephants, mosaic skulls and even mosaic penises! I actually want to get a set of 3 mosaic bowls which wasn't too expensive until i asked about the stand which cost almost the price of the bowls.

Those in front seemed familiar? Thought they were the kind of dolls quite popular in the 1980s when i was still a child.

More dolls can be found in the shop; barbies dolls, golliwogs, teddie bears etc. I did notice one that appeared to be a demoness based on a character in the Journey to the West Chinese novel; white bone demoness (also known as 白骨精).

Wetballs?! What the hell are they? To know more, check out https://baliswetballs.weebly.com! Hyperactive kids? Consider the fidget spinners although i think the fad is already on its way out.

More cute dogs!

As a beach vacation, it's easy to get your hands on swimwear or anything that's related to the beach, the sun and the seas! You may even check out the factory outlets for Billabong and Quicksilver.

I wasn't in the shopping mood as it was a relatively rushed trip and i wouldn't want to spend my precious trying clothes and deliberating if i should buy them.

5GX Bali - reverse bungy in Bali! Main website seemed to be down but you can still find some reviews at its facebook page; https://www.facebook.com/5gxbali/

The clubbing precinct where many would let their hair down at night.

Sadly, its popularity with foreigners made it a primary target for terrorists and result was the infamous Bali bombings in 2002. Over 200 persons died in that attack and standing on the destroyed site is the Sari Club Memorial.

Need a pee after a long walk? Check out the clean toilets on level two of the Indomaret Ground Zero convenience store directly behind the Sari Club Memorial. After you are done, replenish by having a cup of the delicious rum and raisin frappe at Point Cafe in the same store.

5D studio and tattoo parlour; i am more interested in the latter. It's been a teenage dream to ink my skin and the two main reasons why i haven't done so are because it's hard to nail down a design and i couldn't decide where i should tattoo it.

Massage parlours are the norm in Bangkok; in Bali (even Batam, Bintan etc), they upped the parlours to spas as they provide more than just massages. You could get a manicure, pedicure, hair treatment, facial etc!

Clothing store, silverware shop and beachwear shop.

Want to stay along this long road? There were quite a few housing options and the one above is Restu Bali Hotel. From its agoda listing, the room was huge and the rate per night was eye dropping low.

Hookah which a water pipe for an activity known as Shisha which is now banned in Singapore! I am actually quite curious to try it.

Yogurt shop. The thing that caught my attention? The free WiFi logo.

Huffian Line - a beachwear outlet for Billabong and Quicksilver. Don't know if it is a factory outlet although the discounts outside were darn attractive.

Making our way to the even narrower Jalan Benesari after pigging out at the Black House Burgers; technically our last meal in Bali. Are those hammocks hanging from the ceiling? You think i can install one in my house?

Instead of Hooters, let me introduce you to Kooters Bar and Grill! Want to know what they sell and the reviews? Check out TripAdvisor here!

Hotel Terrace at Kuta - there must be some truth to its certificate of excellence by TripAdvisor and its review score was impressive and the room was generally below S$50 a night! Check out the Expedia page here.

Surfing is a big thing in Bali and seeing a shop selling only surfboards was hardly a surprise. However, i am curious as to how much one costs....

Pretty funny tee-shirt; imagine wearing the wear and eating a humongous del monte banana.

The Smiling Frog - not sure about the quality of food although i can bet with you that those with ranidaphobia would definitely steer clear from the restaurant.

Bali is bigger than Singapore and it might be more convenient to just rent a motorbike to get to the places you want, especially when traffic jams appeared to be the norm when i was there.

Continuing along Jalan Benesari.

Beach Bowl - i was pretty keen to try the best smoothies bowl even though i have no idea what the hell it is! Pity it was already closing for the day! I am a sucker for reviews; hence, for the benefit of my beloved blog readers, you may check out the reviews here

Plenty of dining establishments in that small lane.

Even Korean food! If i am travelling with friends, I actually like it when there are a wider variety of food selection when i am in a foreign country; less of a headache when it comes to meals. Worse come to worse, there's usually McDonald's.

Were these new or pre-owned? Nevertheless, i guess i got my answer to the question i posed earlier on the pricing of surfboards.

Balinese Women Parade @ Tanah Lot in Bali [Indonesia]

For those who came in after searching for "Balinese Women" on Google, i would like to notify you that this is a "clean" site and you may want to exit if you are looking for the "otherwise".

Anyway, i was thankful to chance upon a festival where locals were dressed in their traditional Balinese attire and congregating at this parade square in the famous Tanah Lot temple.

It's a collective of bright colours, literally, when i was walking along the shopping streets!

Some had flowery headdresses although the one that caught my attention was the thick hair! How did they manage to groom and upkeep their hair so well?! Must ask them for the remedy as i am facing mid-life hair-thinning issue!

Many young, pretty Balinese ladies.

The older ones have evolved to exude a domineering aura, befitting a matriarch that rules the family with an iron hand. Seriously, i almost got murdered by the killer stare from the two ladies in the photo.

Other pictures for your viewing pleasure.

Despite the deep-set religious and traditional culture, modern conveniences are still the way to go even though i find it amazing that a lady wearing a full length skirt / sarong has no difficulty riding a bike. Respect!

Wakadori Jidai Naruto Honten (若鶏時代なると本店) - Let's Go for Fried Chicken Instead of Seafood @ Otaru [Hokkaido, Japan]

$

0
Otaru, the touristy port city in Hokkaido, is famous for its fresh seafood but while i was checking the top restaurants in Otaru on TripAdvisor; something out-of-the norm popped out on the webpage.

Ranked #4 out of 769 restaurants in Otaru was one with a picture of a fried chicken! Now, that's interesting and i put Wakadori Jidai Naruto Honten into the itinerary as one of three lunch options since there were just too many things to try and we would only be staying a night.

You can opt for takeaway (in case you still have the physical and mental capacity for fried chicken for supper) at the counter which was right after you stepped into the eatery.

That same counter also served as an open kitchen where the chicken would be deep fried right in front of you! It was already past 3 pm when we reached and the aroma was so enticing for my starving stomach.

Interior of the restaurant - do keep in mind that service is definitely not of Japanese standard; honestly, it's just that one waiter who was obviously sneering when we had difficulty telling him our order.

Popular item number 1 - the fried chicken was prominently featured on the menu and it's a definitely order for us. There were options to have it with plain rice or raw sashimi but i guess just the chicken would do for me as i needed to leave space for other goodies in Otaru.

Yakitori & Pork Belly Skewers - Meat would always be preferred and while the meat of the yakitori (chicken) was tender; the marination lost out to Tori Q. Texture of pork belly was even better; a juicy softness within made me regret not having more of it!

Fried Chicken - half a spring chicken and it appeared exactly as depicted on the publicity materials. As it's freshly fried, please do handle it with care.

Those who love fried chicken yet abhor the often fatty skin would definitely enjoy looking at the fried chicken from wakadori as their version came with just a thin layer!

Thinly crisp, it's your simple chicken skin deep fried in oil without any fanciful herbs and minerals; just plain, good old salt.

No surprise about the texture of the chicken meat (as expected, it was juicy) even though i found the taste to be on the salty side. Having a bowl of plain white rice to go with the chicken might actually be a better option.

Nevertheless, burp!

Tanah Lot Temple - Don't Visit In The Morning @ Bali Island [Indonesia]

$
0
0
Tanah Lot temple is undisputably the grand icon for Bali and even though we were severely short on time, i couldn't help thinking it would be sacrilegious if i didn't manage to check it out in my inaugural trip to the Indonesian island

As we were would be departing for home that very evening, i decided to rent a car with driver for just half a day in the morning. This would give me some time in the afternoon to try out new eateries and explore Jl Legian Kaja.

Arrival at the ticketing booth after a ride of about 45 minutes; this would be considered fast given that we didn't encounter any traffic jam which was like the norm in our 4 days stay.

Purchasing the adult ticket at 60,000 rupiahs each for foreigner and if you have a car, as we did, there would be another 5,000 rupiahs. Given the immense popularity of the temple, i wouldn't be surprised if entrance fees inch up in the near future.

Before crossing over the ticketed section, do release your bladder (and bowels, if you must) at the above toilet with a huge Indomie banner. Why?

Simply because you don't have to pay a single cent! It's ridiculous that we were made to pay about 2,000 to 3,000 rupiahs per entry to use the toilets at notable tourist attractions.

Pretty entry archway to Tanah Lot - please remember to keep your tickets and take them out at this point as someone would proceed to check them for admission.

3D effect woah.

Hm.... for a moment, i wondered if i have gone to the wrong attraction as this was more a shopping street than a temple! I did recall that Tanah Lot is a temple by the sea and i guess we have to walk further in, towards the coastline.

As it wasn't even past 8.30 am, many stores remained close even though a few had already started operating to catch the early customers.

Main shopping street with nice pavement and flanked with trees on both sides.

More decorations adorned the street; as indicated on the subject title, the place would be much more happening in the afternoon when most tourists visit for the spectacular sunse (if weather permits).

Even though i left before all the shops were open, i can already sense that the shopping street offered a wide variety of goods and services; be it provision stores, souvenir shops, boutiques, restaurants and even a 5-D experience!

Haven't had your breakfast? Get them at Dewi Sinta; it's already open that early in the morning. Pricing would be on a high side, as expected.

Canang Sari - traditional Balinese flower offerings that are commonly seen on the streets! Want to know what they are here? Check out here

About to reach the seaside!

Always research well and keep your eyes open. From the moment you step into Bali, you would have known what Tanah Lot temple look like; hence, don't act surprise by the rather simple temple on the right.

Tanah Lot is accessible only when the tide is low and it wasn't the case when we reached. Therefore, my gut feeling told me that devotees would use this compound on land to offer their prayers instead.

Bale Gong? Seems to be a shelter for musical instruments.

Stroll further in to where most people were heading to. Even if you are the first customer for the day, you can follow the melody of strong pounding by the waves.

Wore covered shoes? Don't venture further!

Waves can be insanely powerful and have the ability to knock you off your feet if you are not careful. I can see kids falling and people with wet shoes. That's why i always recommend Crocs shoes!

Almost forgot - this is Tanah Lot temple, ladies and gentleman! An interesting outcrop with a house-like structure with patches of greenery. Actually, one third of the rock was fake due to restoration funded by the Japanese government back in the 80s.

Observe your surroundings; to get a better view of Tanah Lot, going up is the best option and i can see a long line of cliff on the coastline right where we came from.

Strong waves!

Did you see the tiny crabs scrambling around on the surface of the rock? Before i proceeded to the cliff top, i might as well make use of this elevated rock to take some pictures.

Like the above photo with the scene opposite me. p.s. not going to take the other side as it's just a huge panorama of nothing but boring sea water.

And of course, another photo of Tanah Lot temple which was claimed to be built in the 1500s by a highly regarded religious figure who was drawn by beauty of the rocky island.

So many people there can only mean one thing; it must be a good spot for photo taking!

Guess was correct but there were just too many people. I cannot imagine the scene at sunset as it's a definite to get a few "heads" in your photos.

Being impatient individuals, frustration came quickly when visitors couldn't seem to decide if the digital photos were perfect and choose to take again and again, without any regard for those waiting for them. In the good old film days, the situation wasn't as bad.

I got a shot using my iPhone!

Want a quieter spot? Turn right (with your back facing the seas) and go up the above lane. For those who wants to go straight at the end of the shopping street leading to Tanah Lot, you can look for the lane on your left.

This lane would bring you to the top of the cliff that i mentioned earlier!

Better right?! Not only was the spot quieter with lesser crowd, it also allowed us to look at Tanah Lot from another angle; like the section under the rock with the words "holy spring water". Wouldn't it be mixed with salty seawater already?

Restaurants made up most of the commercial entities on the clifftop and for good reasons too.

You can comfortably have your dinner while the sun slowly sets behind Tanah Lot temple! Well, i think people who plan might have already known about it; hence, do come earlier if you want to take a good spot!

Come to think of it, the experience would be so shiok! If you are counting, this would be the second reason why my subject title advises not to visit in the morning.

From this angle, you want to make a guess on what the rocky island looks like?

A boat! Anyway, throughout the period i was there, i didn't see anyone on the rock. Shouldn't there be a caretaker or something? Darn, i am so curious to explore it yet i couldn't do anything about it!

Pounding waves, just to prove my point. haha.

Now to make my way down the lane as this tourist attraction appeared to have more than just the temple. As you should have recalled, there was the shopping streets and i did notice people walking towards the right after coming to the end of the main shopping street towards the temple.

Want a small, wooden statue?

A devotee offering her prayers to the gods.

This gentleman more power as he gave us the impression he had the ability to summon something from underneath the waves!

Yes, i have a rich imagination. :)

A music monument?

Tanah Lot temple again - as you can see, i am now on the other end that's also further away from the temple.

A live python! I obviously steered clear from the path of the snake handler; is the snake of any connection to the temple? Apparently, it's rumoured that poisonous snakes guard the temple "against evil spirits". The connection is weak at most since pythons are non-venomous.

A small shrine, i presume?

Mini waterfall; no thanks to the rain that had continued for the past few days.

Another nice natural structure; you may not see much from this angle as this is a rather big cavity that's pretty much hidden at this point.

Scary waves even though this didn't stop thrill seekers from surfing on such choppy waters! For more photographs, check out the posting here

Does this statue remind you of any Chinese mythology gods? For me, i draw similarities with the mischievous Nezha!

I was wondering how the surfers got into the water!

A clearer view of the cavity i mentioned earlier that's a result of natural erosion from the pounding waves over possibly hundreds of thousands of years!

Bumped into a group of Balinese ladies and saw a lot more after that. Think it was related to a festival held in the compound. For more photos, click here.

Back to the shopping street again; albeit a less crowded branch.

Tempted to get some breakfast and being the unadventurous sort (unlike the Great Kon), we decided to go with barbecued corn which turned out to be very nice!

The prevalence of signboards in Chinese only points to one reason; there must be a lot of Chinese tourists visiting Bali

Need a toilet? Pay 3,000 rupiahs first. If you can hold on to your bladder for a bit longer, you can wait until you are out to the carpark where the free-entry toilet is.

Satay... would love to have some but it's not open for business yet. There were rumours of dog-meat satay and i guess that's why the owner had clearly indicated chicken meat, in Chinese.

Pretty realistic face masks for sale; similar to what i saw at Sukawati Art Market in Ubud a few days ago. You can click here for the posting.

Decorative items and wind chimes made from seashells. Nice to have although it's a huge draw for dust and i ain't got any maid to help me clean up. So no thanks!

He didn't have enough corn (blame me for eating too much, in fact) and excitedly ran over when he saw this kiosk with barbecued corn for sale too!

It was a happy expression on his face as he strolled back to where i was. The expression changed soon after when he realised the corn wasn't as good as the first one.

The end of the long Tanah Lot post!

Kusu Island - A Pilgrimage Visit [龟屿进香] in 2017 @ Singapore

It's once again the annual pilgrimage to Kusu Island (from 20 October to 18 November); i promised my mom i would bring her there and this made it my 4th visit since 2012.

Entourage this time included the two brats, my younger sister and my parents! With so many things happening this year to myself and my family, i personally feel that i should go and offer my prayers.

Tickets purchased at S$18 for each adult and S$12 for each child! With such high pricing, i am going to resort to staying longer on the island next year; maybe a BBQ picnic, swimming and snorkeling.

Queue at 10 am; was a bit late as the kids couldn't wake up on time due to staying late over at my house for retro games and movies. At the moment, i still don't have the confidence to have them bunking over for the night.

Cheeky Jovyn; more of her pictures soon.

We didn't have to wait too long; in less than 30 minutes, we were on our way to take the ferry at Marina South Pier.

Sianz, no outdoor seating means i couldn't play games on my phone lest i get sea-sick. I am actually super prone to motion sickness although it has improved compared to when i was a kid.

Welcome to Kusu Island; journey took about 20-25 minutes!

Knowing i was taking a photograph of the map, she immediately jumped in and struck an introductory pose. Hello, i needed the map, unblocked!

The temple that housed the Tua Pek Kong, the patron saint that everyone came for. Since Tua Pek Kong is a common enough Chinese deity with numerous temples on mainland Singapore, why the need for an annual pilgrimage?

More information is provided here for your reading pleasure. In the meantime, let's just attempt coin throwing to hit the bell in the middle of the stone lotus flower. Legend has it that your wish will come true if you hit it, i think.

Additional photos of the built-in-1923 temple.

This lagoon was named the turtle lagoon but much as i looked around, there's no turtle to be found. I did find two just a few meters from the lagoon even though they were not alive and kicking.

Praying time for the mom! I did take a few minutes to pray to the deities honoured in the temple; albeit without the offerings as i found to be environmental unfriendly.

Waiting for the mom as she had to go through the standard procedures; lay out the offerings on the altar, light the incense sticks and place them at appropriate urns and then burn the paper offerings.

Customary photo of the three-turtle statue!

Wish-For-A-Child tree; there must be some truth to its claims even though for the Chinese mindset, never try, never know and no harm in trying.

Back in 2012 and 2013, the tentage was huge to accommodate quite a number of stalls. In the past two years, the scale has reduced dramatically to only this standalone one as above.

Have been buying quite a bit of TOTO and 4D recently for, hopefully, a better life and i was kicking myself for forgetting to purchase any when i visited Kusu Island!

Time for my late breakfast at the food centre. To know what's available, check out my posting for 2016 Kusu Pilgrimage; i should have referred to it too as i once again ordered the poor-performing oyster omelette.

After knowing i have quite a few games in my phone, our dear Jovyn has been requesting for my phone whenever she has free time on her hands!

No, she didn't feel embarrassed that her poor uncle me would not be able to check his work email, upload photos to Instagram or read the feed on Facebook.

Done with my breakfast (char kway teow, oyster omelette, fried chicken wings and a cup of kopi gao) and it's time to climb the 152 steps to the holy kramats

A breeze to reach the top; Mom didn't want to join us as she needed to go vegetarian if she intends to offer her prayers at the kramats.

Our local obsession with the 4D lottery.

Poser!

I don't understand why there were so many 4D numbers written on the yellow-painted boulders. I mean i do but compared to TOTO, the payout for 4D is really peanuts.

Next time i come, i would bring along my lucky marker and write down six digits from 01 to 49. Praying that the draw then would be more than just the usual S$1 million prize.

Immerse yourself in the smoke for "wealth, marriage, fertility, good career, good health, harmony and couples seeking to start a family"; pretty comprehensive.

Time to go down; it's so cute to see Jerald holding on to Jovyn. As Jerald would be reaching puberty soon, this type of scene might be a rarity as both get older.

Hence, take the opportunity for more photo-taking!

Going out from the other staircase.

I find Jovyn's pose to be very funny as she appeared to be a model in a beauty pageant! A check with my sister revealed that this pose has something to do with her graduation performance! Guess i would understand when i attend it this Saturday!

Dad did a better job!

Jovyn again in front of the lagoon; i brought an extra set of clothing but none of them did. Hence, i had to shelve my plan to make full use of my admission ticket.

Stone barrier to protect the lagoon from the strong waves made by the thousands of ships that sailed through the busy Singapore Straits.

Kids insisted of walking towards the far end of the stone dam! I was hesitant as we are primarily responsible for the kids' safety but i always feel that a bit of risk brings out the resilience.

And i am so proud that they did! Next time, i shall sponsor them to Forest Adventure @ Bedok Reservoir; it's a darn good place to conquer the fear of height!

My father joined us in walking over too!

Proceeding to the kids' next favourite place; the open concept tortoise sanctuary. Tsk tsk tsk, dad closed his eyes when i took the picture.

There were so much food for the tortoises; i am wondering if they would overfeed themselves in the way that fishes often do.

Knowing that humans can be extremely terrorizing and the tortoises might be afraid to venture out to feed; a kindhearted man brought along a bottle of dry tortoise kibbles and threw a handful into each tortoise shelter.

Skyline of mainland Singapore!

Jovyn was throwing tantrums, likely due to the warm weather and Jerald shall stand in on her behalf. Poor boy was nursing a swollen eye that day.

Frankly, my father posed quite well! Guess you would see a lot of photos of him in my upcoming trip to Phuket, the Paradise Island of Thailand.

Me stealing a shot of dad's taking a picture.

Remember the two not alive and kicking tortoises a few meters away from the turtle lagoon? These are the ones; two tortoise statues. Unlike the three-turtle statue near the temple, i don't remember seeing these two when i was a kid.

Happy shot of the five of them!

Last picture of the temple as we needed to leave for a lunch appointment with my elder sister and brother in law; despite having a pretty filling breakfast just an hour before.

Under shade, she reverted to her usual posing mood.

Our one-level boat was here! Pity there wasn't an open-air section where i can have the relaxing sea breeze blowing against my face.

Like her mother, Jovyn doesn't survive well in hot places and her excitement in leaving was simply because the boat was air-conditioned, as confirmed by the guy manning the queue.

Once she was in the cool arena, her mood was immediately lifted and aside from asking me for my phone, she also gamely agreed to pose for my camera!

Big cargo ship!

Back to Marina South Pier! In case you think it's a hassle to travel to the pier, it's really not as the pier is located right next to the Marina South Pier MRT station (red line) and it's very convenient, so long the MRT doesn't break down.

Otaru Unga Syokudo (小樽運河食堂) - Just a Short Post @ Hokkaido [Japan]

While TripAdvisor offers a good gauge on the top restaurants in a foreign city, i do trawl the web sometimes for blog reviews by Singaporeans / Malaysians before i narrow down my choice as our taste buds might be similar.

Otaru Unga Syokudo (小樽運河食堂) is one restaurant that appeared on the search result although it's more than just one dining establishment!

Essentially, it's similar to the concept of having a few eateries in one area and that explained the reason why i got confused over the reviews which were veered from seafood to ramen, buffet to ala carte!

My objective was clear - to seek the Hokkaido crab buffet that was priced at 5,600 yen per person and i thought there's no better place than Otaru to satisfy my craving as it's renowned nationwide for the freshness of its seafood.

Sadly, we decided not to patronize it after requesting for permission to check out the premises; there were not many people and the food served didn't appear exceptionally appetizing....

None of the eateries appealed to us although we did have a good time going through the souvenir store right in the middle that's bordered by the seven restaurants.

Aside from food souvenirs, there were stuffed bears where you can use as realistic companions for your photos. Look at those terribly long claws!

This is more than just a souvenir for display; it does have a use and i bet most of you wouldn't know what it is unless you can recognise the Japanese / Chinese characters. That long tooth-pick like thingy is a ear pick!

Marimo, the popular balls of algae that don't require much maintenance, actually came from a lake in Hokkaido; didn't manage to visit the lake which was too far North for us to travel to.

But do you know they came in cans too?!

Second Airbnb in Otaru (AMS Suitengu) - Better But Still Not My Cup of Tea @ Hokkaido [Japan]

Following my virgin experience with Airbnb in Furano, I wasn't looking forward to my second Airbnb the next day at Otaru even though it was said to command a splendid view due to its vantage position.

The almost hilltop location means it's a long way from the main road and we can only thank our rented car for smoothing our journey to the Airbnb!

To be honest, it was a modern mansion-like building that greeted us; built in 2009, it has actually 4 floors with a total of 22 units.

Outdoor parking was available but for the Airbnb, we were only allowed one parking lot. As we had two cars shared among the six of us, we decided to play dumb, keep our fingers crossed and park both cars outside.

Coming back, entry was via a pin-code system with a super easy code that Chinese would be able to relate to. This code was given to us before our stay and as this was essentially a private residence, please do help to maintain the quietness and peacefulness of its environment; something I find hard to do.

The cold, dim corridor and we had to climb one floor up; don't remember seeing a lift.

Our two-bedroom, air-conditioned apartment with a sofa bed in the living room that was already laid out for us. Compared to my first Airbnb, this was definitely more comfortable and more pleasing to the eye.

With bright white walls and industrial grey columns, this wasn't as homely as the Airbnb in Furano yet the kind that I wouldn't mind staying for a couple of days.

The two official bedrooms; we actually had to draw lots to decide who will sleep where and of course, the one disliked by all would be the hard and uncomfortable sofa bed.

Guess who got the sofa bed?! Whatever the case, we had the television in front of us if we decide to TV-binge the entire night. Did I share that there's a balcony?

View outside was good (you can even see some iconic buildings along the famous Sakaimachi Street) although I would prefer to stay indoors; the balcony had limited space to move around and rather dusty.

An old staircase leading to the hilltop! From this angle, I couldn't make out what's on top; maybe a park? The answer shall be revealed in another posting in the near future.

Vanity sink and washing machine within this space connecting the bathroom. The toilet (with the electronic bidet) was housed in another space nearer the entrance. It was quite hidden and for a moment, we thought this Airbnb has no toilet for its residents!

Japanese style bath-tub with bottles filled with fragrant shower gel and shampoo; towels were provided! I really enjoy soaking in such a bathtub as it reminded me of my childhood in the kampong where I would immerse myself in a large water-filled Chinese dragon pot.

Lovely kitchen equipped with the standard microwave oven, stove, electric kettle, iron, ironing board, plates, and cutleries! Using is one thing; in Airbnb, user initiative would be appreciated to clean up the place before leaving for a better review. Hm..... I like hotels.

Window at the kitchen overlooking the private carpark.

Notices in the residence. Glad that they were in English so we knew exactly what to do and the expectations levied on us by the homeowner. Frankly, it was a pleasant stay. However, I still didn't enjoy the Airbnb concept since overseas accommodation, to me, is just a place for me to sleep at night. I don't need a kitchen and Airbnb pricing wasn't incredibly attractive compared to staying in a hotel.

Beside the Airbnb concept that I didn't like as a whole, my only complaint has nothing to do with the unit. Rather, it's the building at night when the orange glow made it appeared so eerie!

Collin's Restaurant - Pretty Good Food for the Pricing @ Marina Square [Singapore]

It was past 7pm on a Sunday after a great karaoke session at Manekineko Marina Square and we were hauling a large (and heavy) gaming monitor to the taxi stand when we noticed a busy restaurant at an otherwise rather quiet section of the shopping mall.

As it's dinnertime and we figured it will be a late meal by the time we arrived at Yishun; we decided to join the queue at Collin's restaurant which, thankfully, wasn't that long!

Faced with a wide range of Western cuisine like includes steaks, pastas, burgers, pizzas, ribs etc, i am in a fix as there's no chef-recommended or must-try logo for me to rely on... The sign holder on my table shall help in the decision making process and the winner was squid ink seafood pasta!

Avocado Mango Shake - Like any good avocado juice, this was creamy and it wasn't generous with the sweet syrup which was good. Sadly, the mango taste dominated the beverage and it was a mango rather than avocado smoothie. Alex should have heeded my advice to order the more conventional avocado shake.

Grilled Sea Tiger Prawn Aglio Olio - Alex's dinner and he was surprised to see a sizeable portion of pasta with 4 large tiger prawns.

I stole a bite and the grilled prawns were extremely fresh with solid, flavourful meat. Even the pasta soaked in the calabrese cream sauce was delectable; sure hoping i wouldn't regret my choice.

Squid Ink Pasta - first thing, it didn't look like squid ink as there's a grayish tinge that made it seemed as though a cement mixer had dumped its content onto the pasta!

Darn; i was so looking forward to having epic looking black stained teeth that i could have shared on Facebook and Instagram.

Nevertheless, the taste was not too bad although it was the dollop of fish roes that helped a great deal. The seafood (squid, prawns, scallops) were also not the dried, tasteless, rubbery type found in some restaurants.

Overall, i did enjoy my pasta even though i would throw my lot for Alex's Grilled Sea Tiger Prawn Aglio Olio if i have to choose between the two!

Last Day of My 4 Days, 3 Nights Itinerary to Bali - The Island of the Gods @ Indonesia

Rise and shine for our last day in Bali! Most times, i would have preferred to sleep late on the last day of our vacation, especially when the flight home was at night! But, i needed to check out Bali's most famous temple and i thought it's better to visit in the morning to beat the crazy traffic jam.

Hence, we arranged for the same driver (from day 3) to pick us up. p.s. i wasn't that keen to engage his service but i have unfortunately left our easybreath snorkeling masks in his car. Lo & behold, it's another change in driver and car.

Frankly, I have gotten quite used to the fact that the nice person you corresponded with in the whatsapp chat etc may not necessarily turned out to be the same person you thought you would be engaging.

Whatever the case, i didn't have the luxury of time to clarify and was mentally exhausted to go through another round of likely unhappy discussion on WhatsApp; might as well use them on enjoying the last leg of my journey in Bali

Pretty smooth ride from Grand Istana Rama hotel and traffic condition was indeed much better early in the morning. There was heavier traffic along the way although they were limited to touristy, built-up areas at Kuta and Seminyak.

The sprawling rice padi fields!

As seen from the above picture of a rain-dotted windscreen, weather was less than favorable and that's quite a damper on our mood as it's never good to encounter constant rainy condition when travelling.

An altar at the crossroad with a sign pointing to Tanah Lot temple

Standing outside the entrance where your admission tickets would be checked. For a detailed post on Tanah Lot temple (including tons of pictures), click here.

Tanah Lot temple is like the iconic symbol for Bali and you can see usage of its picture on most promotional materials targeting tourists! It's a pity i didn't get to explore the temple given the high tide although there's plenty to explore surrounding the temple; we had a delicious BBQ corn, watched troupes of Balinese women in traditional attire and caught two crazy fellows surfing!

Driving past the padi fields again on our way back. Looks like houses were being built and their position, overlooking the fields, would translate into potentials for eco-dollars if those structures were open for tourists to stay in.

Deformed glass vases that would stay in position on tree trunks, branches etc; if memory serves me right, I have seen them before in some gardens (maybe Gardens by the Bay).

Made's Warung, a dining establishment with good reviews and the allocated restaurant for lunch that day! However, the branch i targeted was at Kuta whereas this particular branch was located at Seminyak.

You know something is off when you spot a clothing label known as Buddha Wear. Disrespect aside, the only Buddha wear i know is those saffron robes!

The many signboards along the crazily-packed the Jl Raya Seminyak which is an extension from the almost 3-km Jl Legian Kaja at Kuta

Busy traffic along the two-lane road; which means i have plenty of time to compose my angle and take photos after photos of the signboards.

Grab and Uber, the private ride hailing companies, had created a lot of unhappiness among traditional taxi companies and it's the same in Bali where the drivers were disallowed from using stands reserved for taxis.

More of the signboards; unlike the ones in Hong Kong, these don't extend beyond the perimeter of the roads and rightfully so given the height of some motor vehicles.

After close to 80 minutes, we finally caught sight of the towering main split gates (known as candi bentar) of Kuta Beach

Without wasting any precious time, we hit the street shortly after packing our stuff, taking a nice shower and checking out of the hotel. Our request for late checkout was rejected as Grand Istana Rama hotel required the room for another group of vacationers.

Touristy activity at Kuta as i understand that the horse carriages are only allowed within a specific area. This is different from the situation in the outskirts of Bandung where the use of horse carriages is considered as a mode of transportation for the locals.

Cramped road where motor vehicles and horse carriages shared the space.

A customary shot of the hard rock hotel since many tourists were doing it. Even my sister, who visited a few years ago, had a photo of her beside the concrete surfboard.

Satisfying lunch at Made's Warung! For review, click hereAlex went for an-hour foot massage at Smart Spa after lunch whereas i decided to continue my shopping at the nearby Matahari shopping centre. While going through some souvenirs, i realized there's a piece of possibly peanut in my mouth and spat it out.

It's not peanut; it's a piece of my tooth!

And there's an unsightly gaping hole! I was aghast but i guess there's nothing i can do at that point even though i am travelling with a bunch of dentists! Haha. Oh well, the tooth wasn't cracked and i didn't feel any pain; guess i can fill up the tooth when i am back in Singapore.

Along the way, we also detoured slightly for a haircut at Vegas barbershop (Alex, not me) and another great meal at Black House Burgers

Our walk was technically a loop that would bring us back to Grand Istana Rama hotel and the first sight we knew we were on the right track was when the border wall for Kuta beach appeared in front of us.

If not for the burger meal we had at Black House Burgers, i can guarantee you that Alex would want to have his last BBQ corn from the above stall.

Interesting way of promotion and doubt this will take off in Singapore as it's likely a safety issue and you don't need many incidents; just one would be sufficient to have people saying we shouldn't allow this on the road.

After abandoning Alex at the hotel, i quickly went over to the supermarket at Beachwalk shopping centre. I had compared and the variety of food souvenirs was way wider at the supermarket!

I have seen canang sari (the traditional Balinese flower offerings) on the streets and out in the open and am quite surprised to see it placed under the shelvings in the supermarket! Some had lighted incense sticks and i bet someone had been burnt before.

Got my Bali peanuts; don't be fooled by its simple, vacuum packed packaging. These peanuts were fused with the garlic aroma and darn addictive; i totally love the tiny bits and strips of deep fried garlic!

Back to the hotel a quarter before 6 pm as our pre-booked transport to the hotel was expected to pick us up then. We had previously left our luggage with the hotel's baggage service and there's no one manning the counter. You know what we did? We just removed the tag ourselves; learning point - never leave your valuables in the luggage as security might not even exist.

Frankly, that's quite a lot for thing we would be bringing back for just a 4-day trip although to be honest, i didn't go all crazy with my shopping; not when i had a gaping hole in my mouth.

Our transport came 30 minutes late due to a concert at Kuta Beach! As it is a one-way street outside the hotel, the traffic snag continued throughout the journey to the airport.

I constantly checked google map but information wasn't that reliable; by this time, we had spent about an hour on the road even though a typical journey from the hotel to the airport would take about 25 minutes over 9.9 kilometers. Interestingly, it's faster for us to walk as it will take about 50 minutes to walk the 4.4 kilometers from the hotel to the airport.

Since i was in a smaller van that took off from the hotel earlier, we arrived first and two of Alex's colleagues immediately ran towards the check-in counter whereas i took on the responsibility to remove the pieces of luggage from the vehicle.

Took picture of the airport as i waited for the main mini-bus that carried most of our travel mates. Quite a hilarious scene when they arrived as they were literally running at full speed with their luggage! It was worrying too as some are around my parents' age and i am worried they will fall down.

It was already 8pm when our van reached the Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport and i know the hope would be slim since our departure via KLM airline was scheduled at 8.40pm.

As expected, no luck with checking in since counter closed 60 minutes before departure.

We had two options; to wait for the KLM flight next morning or purchase a separate plane ticket from another airline with scheduled flights back to Singapore that evening.

I went with the majority and purchased the one way ticket via Jetstar for a flight two hours later! The price for the ticket wasn't cheap and if i remember right, it's about S$280 per person!

Physically and mentally exhausted, we immediately checked in, unloaded our luggage and proceeded to the departure section of the airport.

Even though i initially had the intention to blog about the airport separately, i was simply too tired to take photos and only had a pictures to show.

There's a branch of Made's Warung in the airport too!

On our way to the gate; it's a long walk for us as it's at the end! Good exercise for the hyperactive kids though; kid zone wouldn't excite most Singapore kids.

Our gate; once you cleared your entry, you would be stuck in this boring space with limited seating until the call for you to board is called.

With nothing to shoot at, i ventured to the clean and empty washroom!

Very well maintained with plates of fresh flowers at the vanity sink counter top. Toilets in Southeast Asian countries are not known for their cleanliness, even at the airports, and i thought this standard would easily match the ones at our beloved Changi Airport.

Time to board; no connected aero-bridge which wasn't an issue so long weather is okay. I kind of like walking in the open anyway as it's a good opportunity to take photo so long the security doesn't stop you.

Re-fueling that was just completed as i climbed up the stairs; see, this kind of shot would be rather impossible if we were to take the connected, sheltered and air-conditioned aero-bridge.

With no entertainment and no allocated in-flight meal on the budget airline, this shall be the concluding photo for our exciting last day (which will also be put on record as the first time i missed a flight) at Bali.

Sushi Zammai Japanese Restaurant @ Otaru [Hokkaido, Japan]

I kid you not; our group was totally indecisive when it comes to dinner at Otaru as there were way too many choices yet the popular ones were either commanding a long queue or closing for the day.

We eventually came to this standalone restaurant with a big plastic fish plastered on its signboard. Menu looked pretty extensive, just like Japanese restaurants (e.g. Sushi Tei) in Singapore and exhaustion had rendered us pretty much resistant to walk any further.

This cut-out of a man with a tuna seemed quite familiar although i couldn't quite recall where i had seen him before. It didn't take me long to realise this is the same man who has been winning the top bid for a blue fin tuna at the annual New Year auction in Tokyo's Tsukiji market!

So this is his restaurant! Not that it matters to me since publicity stunt can only do so much to help the restaurant if the food were to turn out less than favourable.

Good thing for English speakers - the menu provided English translation and the summer special for bluefin tuna five nigiri shall be my meal! Otaru is known for its fresh seafood and i guess there's no better location than in Otaru to get the best quality!

Soup - this was passed to us for free and even though it was just filled with prawn heads, the broth was insanely rich and flavourful yet noticeably thin on the texture.

Chawanmushi - surprisingly, the taste didn't wow us despite the hefty price tag of more than S$6; you get your normal ingredients in the smooth egg custard, topped with fish roes.

Clam Miso Soup - the colder weather that evening made one crave for hot, soupy stuff and this was ordered as i remember how good the mini pack of instant clam soup sold at Daiso Singapore was.

This was obviously much better and the clams (six of them) were so meaty! It tasted hearty and i loved the addition of shredded spring onion which added a layer of freshness!

California Roll - Alex's key order in any Japanese restaurant would be the California roll and it's no exception even though we were in the country of sushi.

Simple, nice and in a smaller 4-piece portion. From Alex's expression, i know he was thinking of the fusion sushi roll from Singapore's rollie olie!

Bluefin Tuna Five Nigiri - it would be a big disrespect if i don't even attempt one piece of sushi in my first visit to Japan and i have been hearing from the Great Kon that i die die must try the fatty tuna!

Tuna has never been my favourite choice when it comes to sushi and the set i got totally blew me away! Every piece tasted so fresh and yummy; i almost wanted to go for seconds....

Fatty tuna, in particular, was a literal melt in the mouth. It's amazing, especially given the fact that Sushi Zammai wasn't even the best sushi restaurant in Otaru.

Irodori Field & Forest Field @ Farm Tomita [Furano, Hokkaido, Japan]

I was done checking out the main fields at Farm Tomita but i couldn't help noticing some visitors venturing towards the left side of the road; asking my travel mates to wait for a while, i decided to follow them.

The picture honestly didn't do the field any justice as i was simply in awe by what was in front of me. Okay, i exaggerated slightly as Shikisai-No-Oka (四季彩の丘) was by far the most breathtaking flower field in my life; not that i have visited a lot though.

As an amateur photographer who tries to seek a better spot for photography, i saw an elevated platform and assumed it would give me a great view of the surrounding.

There were plenty of outdoor seating if you wish to spend a lazy day in the open. Want food and drinks? No problem as there's a cafe called Forest House. Need the washroom? It's nearby too!

Only issue? Not much of a shelter if the rain comes. Oh, please also note that the Forest House doesn't operate all year round; only in July although i thought it was open for business when i was there in August.

The elevated platform was surrounded by native trees known as the Japanese Larch and they provided much shade in the hot, late morning.

In most places, the trees would have been cut to make way for the convenience of humans; here at this place, the man-made structures were built around existing trees!

View ahead of us.

There are numerous flower fields within Farm Tomita and this particular one is known as Irodori Field and said to be the most famous as it showcases seven colours down a gentle slope!

It honestly didn't seem like much in the above photo and surprisingly, this would be one instance where an elevated angle is not an advantage.

Especially when a certain section was still undergoing planting. The blooming season was said to be from early till end July and i am unsure if i was too late (in August) as my friend who went in July mentioned that the fields were not in full bloom.

A lot of people were taking photos down there than up here!

Main flower fields near the coach buses parking bay and the mountains at the back belong to the Tokachi Volcanic Group; tallest of which is Mount Tokachi at 2,077 meters.

Walking back as i still needed to meet up with my travel mates! To the left is actually a separate flower field known as Forest Field.

Said to consist of lavenders and poppies; i am just seeing a lot of greens. According to the website, "the dried lavender flowers from Farm Tomita are exclusively from this field".

Down on solid ground.

View down here was definitely way better than up there and from this specific angle, the flower fields looked nicer with a deeper contrast of colours across the different flower plots.

Name of the flowers in Japanese, English, Korean and Chinese.

There's a Tomita Melon House and you wouldn't miss the floating melon balloon; pity we didn't have sufficient time to check it out as we needed to drive to Otaru which was over a 2-hour drive away.

More photos of the Irodori Flower Field - last one was the two-rowed barley and even though i don't know what it would be used for; the Chinese words on the plaque indicated it was used for beer making.

Pretty view of the elevated platforms (that looked like a tree house) with the Japanese larches and the large plot of Lavender flower field.

Trying to tear myself away as my travel mates must be wondering where i have gone to! That's the responsibility when travelling with more than two friends; i can't just pull them with me as everyone has different agendas and objectives.

Lavender flowers; as i probably have mentioned before, the lavender flowers were not as purplish as the many pictures that made them out to be, until you take a closer shot.

My travel mates came to look for me! Frankly, i am not too sure about that as their expression when they saw me was more like "how come you are here also"? Damn!

I absolutely love this photo; a seemingly perfect spread of colour that was marred by tiny splashes of blood red. It reflects life where nothing is perfect and sometimes, it's that tiny bit of imperfection that sets you apart from others.

These orange flowers are known as California poppies.

Baby's breath even though they don't appear to be the same one we often see in flower bouquets as the flowers here appeared much larger. The baby's breath i know has a Chinese name that's translated into "the sky filled with stars (满天星)".

Truck, truck and truck. Unlike Shikisai-No-Oka (四季彩の丘), the trucks were purely for farming uses and you don't see instructions asking visitors to buy tickets for a tour around the fields on a truck.

A farm boy setting barricades that would hopefully deter inconsiderate visitors from stepping deeper into the flower plots and reduce the risk of them destroying the flowers.

No tripod allowed!

The Forest Field looked like patches of cow grass and i can so imagine a herd of cows leisurely ingesting the grass. I actually didn't step closer to the field so i could have been wrong. Our travel mate was quite focused on what he saw though.

Weather got quite hot and my throat was getting parched! Time to go back to the car and grab my large bottle of mineral water.

Goodbye!

The 250 Yen Furano Melon @ Farm Tomita [Hokkaido, Japan]

Every time i walked past the imported melon section at a Japanese supermarket in Singapore, i couldn't help getting shocked by the pricing as it could cost almost S$100 for just one fruit!

Hence, when i saw the rows of readily-sliced and cut Furano melon in the glass display at Farm Tomita shop; i told myself i should get a slice simply to taste the difference between Japanese melons and non-Japanese ones. In comparison, the latter may cost only S$3 in the little red dot.

Orangey flesh that glistened under the sunlight; i delicately picked up one piece and popped it into my mouth. 250 yen is converted to more than S$3 (technically one slice of Japanese melon is equivalent to one whole non-Japanese melon) and i chewed slowly to savour the flavour.

Obviously, i had to scrap clean the flesh off the skin! Okay, verdict would be - it tasted sweet and juicy although honestly speaking, i didn't feel that the cost differential is justifiable for me to grab the Japanese melon! Maybe i should check out the holy grail of Japanese melon next time; the Yubari King.

Most of us would have just trashed the melon skin into any dustbin but this is Japan! Recycling is part and parcel of their lives and i see one dustbin reserved for melon peel and another one for corn cobs!

When in Japan, do as the Japanese do.

Sea City Wanton Noodle (海城云吞面) - Ask for Extra Crispy Pork Lard @ Ghim Moh Hawker Centre [Singapore]

It's amazing how the body can crawl out of bed after being washed down by two glasses of martini, one glass of long island tea and another glass of midori sprite; but i did last Saturday morning and even managed to travel to Ghim Moh food centre for breakfast!

Not that i have much of a choice since it's Jovyn's graduation performance and being a supportive uncle, my attendance would hopefully cheer her up. Before then however, i needed to fill up my tummy and my choice that day would be the wanton noodle from Sea City.

Even though it's my second visit to the same stall, it still strikes me as strange that there's no queue at the stall despite the hawker centre being immensely popular on weekend mornings. Oh well, it benefits the consumers and i am happy to get my tray of wanton noodles with soup so fast!

Now, i was attracted to this stall because my colleague told me they served large pieces of crispy pork lard and those who know me would be aware i can eat them like potato chips! Not one to miss the chance to indulge in my favourite snack, i had to ask for extra pork lard.

Al dente noodles that didn't have the akaline taste some people detest and my only grouch was that i should have asked for tomato instead of spicy as the latter was a bit too hot for me. Char siew was surprisingly tender and flavorful even though they appeared dry and not excessively fatty.

Crispy pork lard would obviously be the star and it's mind-blowing to have at least one piece in every spoonful of noodles that fed my mouth! They were not the stale-tasting kind and retained the crunch that made eating them so satisfying!

Look at the amount of meat in the wanton!

Leaving the best for the last and it was a mouthful of epic satisfaction! By the way, how come no one has come out with crispy pork lard popcorn?

Cleaned up the bowl of noodles!

Otaru Denuki Koji (小樽出抜小路) - A Unique Building @ Otaru [Hokkaido, Japan] #小樽出抜小路

Among the many old buildings at Otaru, the one that caught my attention was the above structure called Otaru Denuki Koji! I don't think it's a historical building but it did remind me of some iconic Japanese style buildings that had appeared in some of the computer games i used to play.

We arrived at quite a bad timing as many of the about 19 eateries were closed for the day. Don't you just love the lanterns hanging from the ceiling? It transformed the mini walking street into a scene from the epic Japanese anime; Spirited Away!

Koji, if i am not wrong, is Japanese for street / road; hence, the building is named after a road / street. Question is which street / road? I have no idea although the building was in fact made up of small, standalone shophouses with lanes that separated them.

I first noticed the charming structure when i was researching before my trip on good reviewed restaurants. The dining establishment i was pretty keen in was Tempura Wakisaka that's within Otaru Denuki Koji!

Didn't manage to satisfy my craving (given my love for deep fried food) as they were already serving their last customer. For the benefit of those who are curious about the pricing, please refer to the above.

Eventually, we decided to queue outside this restaurant that served sea urchin and fish roes. Sadly, our patience ran thin as the seating capacity was limited and we were concerned that they would sold out by the time we were served. Our dinner that night was fulfilled at the nearby Sushi Zammai instead.

By the way, i read somewhere that you can climb up the tower and access the observation deck! I didn't attempt as i didn't know about it until my return from Hokkaido! :(

Navigation map of Otaru Denuki Koji as above.  Remember the fried chicken i had that afternoon? Wakadori Jidai Naruto had a takeaway counter at Otaru Denuki Koji! You may check out the chicken if you are sick of seafood!

The Beautiful Glass Pens @ Otaru [Hokkaido, Japan]

I am a man with butterfingers and even when i read that Otaru is as famous for its glassware as is the case for its fresh seafood, i am honestly uninterested given my penchant to break things.

However, i was drawn to this poster outside a shop along the popular Sakaimachi Street at the port city; the beautiful glass pens! It's not my first encounter with this unique stationery as they can be found at Bangkok's Chatuchak market too!

Nevertheless, they exuded a certain level of exquisiteness that's both delicate yet dazzling at the same time. You may try to write using the glass pen in the shop and you would be surprised how smooth your handwriting is! p.s. the ease of writing doesn't alter the style of writing; hence, if your handwriting is ugly, it continues to be ugly.

Guide to using the glass pen! In Bangkok, i remember a dip in the ink would allow you to write half a page before the ink runs out and i am unsure if it is the same case for the Otaru glass pens as the fissures on the tip appears different.

The pricing of 4,700 yen for a glass pen, with a glass pen rest and a bottle ink can be relatively eye-popping but it's about the same price as the single glass pen i purchased at Bangkok (in 2010, it cost 1,200 baht)! For cost savings, buy two sets to take advantage of the tax rebate!

It's possible to get the pen alone at 3,500 yen which would be cheaper than the one in Bangkok. Frankly, they made for great gifts, especially with Christmas coming, although i doubt many people write a lot nowadays... oh well, for the novelty.
