Jovyn's K2 Graduation Performance from Pat's Schoolhouse - Charlie & The Chocolate Factory and Starry Tales @ ACJC Faith Centre for Performing Arts [Singapore]

Four years ago, i attended Jerald's graduation performance at Singapore's oldest hotel and it's amazing how time flies as we get older; just last week, it's Jovyn's turn.

The musical for Pat's Schoolhouse (Serangoon and Jubilee Park) in 2017 was Charlie & The Chocolate Factory although there were individual class performances known as Starry Tales!

Tickets were needed to access the hall and nothing's better than a special golden ticket for each of us! Gosh, the amount of work that went into the performances was incredible compared to the time when i was a kindergarten kid.

Entering the Lee Choon Guan theatre which was built in 2008; in comparison, Jerald's performance was held at the older Raffles' Hotel Jubilee Hall that opened in 1991.

Bloody - we were given front row seating!

Don't get me wrong; as a family member, i am darn happy to be seated so near to the main stage as Jovyn would definitely be able to see us! As a photographer, however, the stage-right position means my angle would always be skewed. :(

Shhhhhh, it's starting!

That's our big girl and she was standing so close to us! Obviously, she noticed us and i did see the little boy next to her; isn't that her best friend that i have posted before at this blog entry

Singing time by the entire graduation cohort from two branches of Pat's Schoolhouse! I couldn't recall if it is the English song "We the Children" or the Mandarin classic xinyao "细水长流".

Now, i don't recall this scene from Jerald's K2 graduation where each graduant will receive a gift from the principal of the school. Maybe because i was late for Jerald's performance.

Teachers belting out a song before the show starts. Nowadays, being a kindergarten teacher is so tough and i bet one of the criteria is to be multi-talented!

Starry Tales - Act 1 (10 Gifted Brothers)
In a nutshell, starry tales is a collection of five fables / legends with a moral message. For this particular act, many Chinese should aware who the ten brothers are as each was gifted with a special power.

The story of the ten brothers was adapted into a drama serial and even as a movie!

For the purpose of this performance, the storyline concentrated on a sick mother who could only be cured by a magical phoenix egg kept by a local magistrate.

Although the brothers were caught, the punishments meted out were negated given their powers. They were eventually let off and granted a star in view of their filial piety.

Closure of Act 1.

Starry Tales - Act 2 (Halibu and the Red Ruby)
Shone by a dedicated spotlight, a fairy started each act with a prologue and i missed out on Act 1 as the little gal had stepped outside the light, making it hard for my camera to focus.

A snake princess with a precious stone that allowed the carrier to understand the languages of animals. The only disadvantage is that the carrier cannot tell other people what he/she heard from the animals; failing which he/she would be turned into a stone!

Congregation of little birds that knows a great deal about natural disasters.

Our Jovyn as one of the birds! I can see that she really enjoyed performing; maybe my sister and brother in law can send her for dancing / acting classes instead as she seems pretty weak in her academics.

End of Act 2

Starry Tales - Act 4 (Xiaohei Goes Up To Hope Mountain)
Missed out on Act 3 as the pictures didn't turn out well.

Act 4 talks about a boy who couldn't study due to his poverty and decided to go up to the hope mountain to pluck a star of desire. He promised a neighbour he will bring back another star to heal his leg but sadly, a person can only bring back one star. Will he give it to his neighbour?

Starry Tales - Act 4 (Yanzi, The Witty Envoy)
Setup for this act was by far the most massive and in addition, one kid was somersaulting; i don't even know how to somersault!

Magnificent for a kindergarten performance!

Why was the kid emperor looking at me?! Haha. Anyway, this story was about the envoy of the state of Chu who visited the state of Qi to maintain relations between the two warring states.

Jovyn came on stage again as it's time for everyone to gather together to conclude first part of their performance; the Starry Tales segment.

Let's break for an interlude where lunch was served. As i just had a filling wanton noodle with tons of crispy pork lard at Ghim Moh food centre less the three hours ago, i couldn't stomach another full meal!

For sale - pictures taken during full dress rehearsals and target would be the parents who prefer to fork out a bit of money for better photographs! My sister and brother-in-law preferred to rely on me instead.

Gateways for the two performances; personally, even though they were good to have, i thought it would be best to place them in another location so that guests who didn't want to have pictures taken of the gateway wouldn't have to be held up by other guests who were keen!

Charlie & The Chocolate Factory
Oompa-Loompas starting the show with dancing and singing! Frankly, the lack of sleep the night before had taken a toll on me as i kept yawning throughout the performance!

Anyway, i am not going to give much of a summary about Charlie & The Chocolate Factory since i bet most of you would be aware of how the story goes.

There's a slight variation which supplemented the original story; the rock and roll show where the lucky golden ticket holders were announced.

Jovyn was one of the hosts for the show! I know she's holding on to the microphone but it's for show only. I don't have much faith for kids their age to remember their lines and it's likely easier to dub the lines beforehand and for them to act out on site instead.

More pictures of Jovyn, including her signature pose at the end!

The poor Charlie finally getting his golden ticket and jumping with joy upon tearing apart the wrapper of willy wonka's chocolate bar.

With all five golden tickets found, it's about time to enter the mysterious factory and be welcomed by its eccentric owner; Mr Willy Wonka himself!

I am going to spare you my lousy storytelling although i guess you would have known the misfortune of the four kids; Violet Beauregarde, Augustus Gloop, Veruca Salt and Mike Teavee.

Cutest character throughout this performance wasn't the Oompa-Loompas. Rather, i am rather taken in by the child-sized squirrels; they looked absolutely adorable!

Happy Ending!

All the performers coming together for the grand finale.

Of course, credits to the hardworking teachers! As Jerald is an alumnus from the Serangoon branch of Pat's Schoolhouse, he knew quite a number of Jovyn's teachers; the most memorable one that i recall is this Teacher Jia who is easily recognised due to her towering height.

Jovyn giving me the V sign!

Her good friend, Oppa, covering his ears for a reason i am fully aware of as the same thing had happened during Jerald's graduation performance

Confetti time!

Once the curtains were drawn, family members were invited to stand next to their kid's bag of belongings outside the theatre.

Family members eagerly waiting for the march in; should the same thing happen during my time, i can bet my mum will argue it's a waste of time and there's no way my dad will skip his work just to attend my performance!

Time has changed and in the present era, corporal punishment is frowned upon by society and given the immense stress faced by the younger generation, there's a need to instil not just love but also encouragement.

Jerald is easily Jovyn's biggest fan and that's surprising given the latter's temper! However, i sure hope that the sibling love will continue even when they are older as puberty and the need for recognition among peers can alter the family dynamics.

Pictures with the family!

Hugging time between Jovyn and her best friend. On one hand, i am happy Jovyn is advancing to primary one next year but on the other hand, i am also sad that she might no longer be in contact with these friends she spent so much time with in the past few years.

And our Jovyn has so many guy friends! This is quite similar to her mom who tends to have more guy friends than girl friends. Darn, see how her best friend was holding her by her shoulder?! So cute right!?

Okay lah, she has girl friends too!

On a final note, my deepest gratitude to the teachers and staff of Pat's Schoolhouse who have groomed our Jovyn well since 2014; i have seen her transformed from a tiny, needy toddler who couldn't manage a full sentence to a little confident girl who speaks too much!

Keen to know how much she has changed? You may check out my post on her "last week in the talent plus playgroup at Yishun".

Otaru Music Box Museum - The Main One @ Hokkaido [Japan]

It was said that a virgin visit to Otaru, the nostalgic port city of Hokkaido, is never complete unless you have covered the two key attractions; Otaru canal (also known as the big drain for many) and the music box museum!

Today, we shall step into the music box museum and although i didn't manage to cover everything, the following pictures would give you a rough idea on what to expect; note, the museum component is not huge in scale.

Before entering the built-in-1912 building, you would have noticed this 5.5-meter clock tower outside the entrance. Known as the steam clock, this chimed hourly and played a melody every 15 minutes!

Inside the building - covering two floors, you would find tons of music boxes! Most were for sale and they came in all shapes and sizes. I bet you can find something you like; only issue was the pricing.

With the technological jump for musical devices in the past few decades, it should have accelerated the demise for music boxes. However, even though sales might not be as spectacular as before, i believe the crisp melody from a music box still appeals to many people.

Old European design; they wouldn't look out of place at Buckingham palace or any of the ancient palaces in Europe.

Not sure if the items placed within the cabinet are music boxes. In front of the cabinet was a small panel that mentioned 九谷焼 which is a Japanese style porcelain known as Kutani.

Music box from my era when i was a kid; i remember my mum had the same one with a dancer that rotated on the tiny dance floor when the box was opened.

Like a gigantic cake, you are looking at hundreds of musical boxes stacked on top of each other which reminded me; be careful when you have hyperactive kids! Rein them in! If need be, leave them outside!

Dolphin-themed with dolphins of various colors.

Wood-based music boxes; those collecting musical boxes would likely go crazy here. I am so glad my hobby is collecting absolut vodka bottles and piggy banks; p.s. not just any piggy bank (click here for more information).

There's a second and third floor (as can be seen from the above picture); shall share the map of the building at the end of the post.

Beautiful glass angels - honestly, i shouldn't term them as music boxes as it's technically not boxed up the usual way. Nevertheless, there was a box and it's hidden underneath the angelic dress.

Various colours just like the dolphins; personally, some appeared really weird in other colours and even though it offers a wider variety, it gave a layman consumer like i the impression that there's a lack of creativity.

Amusement park theme!

Going up to the second floor; compared to the noisy crowd on the first level, it got much quieter as i climbed up the stairs. Maybe because there was so much to see; many people simply didn't have sufficient time to check out the upper floors!

A pity though as there were way more unique stuff on the second level; like the above wall mounted cats and owls. They had a string in the middle; pull it and the melody will start.

Same concept as the hanging music toy we get for infants! They don't come cheap; the copperplate one above was priced at 5,940 yen (about S$73)!

This was cheaper at 4,536 yen; still above S$50 though.

Other as cute hanging musical boxes - there were so many to choose from; i was literally bedazzled despite thinking of buying a few as decorations for my sparse flat.

Humongous bear - couldn't find any knob to turn it on.

View of the ground floor; guess it's human nature. We got so overwhelmed by what we see in front of us; we forgot that there might be more waiting to be explored. Oh well, i am not complaining since i don't have to jostle for space.

Some items were made in China; hence, do check carefully as you could likely get the made-in-china at a huge discount on shopping sites like taobao.com.

Made in Hokkaido - Otaru is also well known for its glassware and it made perfect sense to have music boxes using Otaru glass to ornament them.

Not everything sold at the music box museum belongs to the music box theme; like these light weighted displays of mainly felines.

Glass paper weights!

Cute charcoal display that helps to remove odors in your cupboard; don't bother placing them in your living room as the size is too small. If you need one for a room, get a big bag of charcoal; it works better.

Big music box! I forgot to take a photo of the information plaque in front of it; hence, i am unsure if it is indeed a musical box as there were organ pipes in the middle, right behind the wooden mannequin.

Officially the museum section where there was a showcase of antique musical devices that came after music boxes; for example, the gramophones, the radios and the CRT televisions!

Equally interesting was the area on the development of mechanical musical instruments from 1600s to the early years of the 20th century. For goodness sake, I was borne in the 20th century!

Aside from helpful translations (in English, Chinese and Korean), a visual 3D mock-up of the respective eras was also appealing to those who prefer to see than to read.

Traditionally plain music box with an eye-popping price; 91,800 yen (over S$1,100 each)! Almost got a heart attack.

I am a cheapo (nothing more than S$20) when it comes to gifts unless i am sure the receiver will like it or it's a present that warrants an important occasion. This one above cost 3,780 yen (S$46).

LED lighted musical box - priced at 3,240 yen (S$40), there's hardly any workmanship to justify the price! I would be better off getting a similar look-a-like alarm clock at less than S$15.

Some of the range allowed you to choose the melody for the music box; it could be the classic auld lang syne or even the popular Let It Go.

Beckoning Japanese geisha music box.

Clown doll musical box - with the movie "IT" being a big hit on the screen recently, i am wondering if there will be a corresponding drop in the sales of clown-related merchandise.

Kaleidoscopes fascinates me when i was younger as there could be countless beautiful patterns down that tiny little scope! I would have gotten if i was ten years younger. Now that i am older, i know this would be dumped at one corner.

Didn't help as well when i noticed the price; 6,048 yen (close to S$75)! I can definitely spend that kind of money on a few more piggy banks.

Hm..... i don't think i need to be taught on how to use the music box.

The Greenhouse beside Hanabito Field @ Furano Farm Tomita [Hokkaido, Japan]

A standalone greenhouse right behind a field filled with blooming flowers of vivid colors - it just had that special draw for you to take a closer look.

Which we did after having a slice of Furano melon

Frankly, i don't understand the need for a greenhouse at Farm Tomita when the view outside was way more spectacular. In comparison, taking photos in the greenhouse didn't quite elicit that much of ane excitement.

Lawson cypress, airplane plant, geranium flowers; be honest with me, did they wow you? In all fairness, they were beautiful but i doubt they make your eyes twinkle.

Even the passion flower plant was devoid of flower.

And there are only so many flowers i would want to take close up. Should i do that at Farm Tomita or even at Shikisai-No-Oka (四季彩の丘), i will need a lot more time!

Nevertheless, a customary shot would still be nice and i had our usual model, Alex, standing at the wooden stake bearing the Farm Tomita name with tiny clusters of lavender flowers in front of him.

There's a reason why i have the greenhouse as a separate post and it's not just to lament how boring it was; instead, the location of the greenhouse should be remembered by all who would be visiting the farm.

Its location provides an amazing view of the Hanabito field with the backdrop of the towering trees, the Hanabito House and the mountains. Don't believe me?

Take a look at the above!

Angle of the lens plays a very important part; contrast the above with the picture before it and you would have noticed that the lavender portion appeared a lot denser in the second one. I didn't photoshop anything; i merely bent a little lower and zoomed in closer to give the false impression that the family of four was buried in the midst of lavender flowers.

Last pic - butterfly collecting nectar from the lavender flowers.

Shimbashi Soba - Warm Soup Noodle & Chilled Noodle @ Great World City Shopping Mall [Singapore]

Ever since i had my first slurp of soba (on my return flight back from Hokkaido), i have been craving for the next bite! The opportunity came when i was at Great World City recently and Shimbashi Soba restaurant caught my attention.

My lack of dining experience with soba means i know nuts about the buckwheat noodle; i had to rely on the menu for information on this "functional food" like its low-calorie count and its claim of anti-ageing benefits.

Strict adherence to the 3 core principles ensure the freshness of Shimbashi Soba - the buckwheat seeds were milled daily, freshly made and freshly cooked. If you are particular about the original of the buckwheat seeds, they hailed from Tasmania and were grown pesticide free.

Buckwheat - the more the merrier, especially when a hot cup of soba cha only cost S$0.30; in comparison, a glass of plain water can set me back by S$0.50 at some restaurants.

Soba Cha - interestingly good; it was just like drinking roasted green tea and biting into bits of soggy rice crispies which were of course buckwheat seeds. I think my mom would love it!

Shimbashi Combi Soba - since i couldn't decide whether to try the warm soup soba or go with the common chilled soba, i guess the combi soba with tempura would be the best choice for me.

The vegetable and prawn tempura were not memorable and i attributed it to the tendons i have been facing in recent months (last of which was Akimitsu Tendon). Warm soup soba was similar to eating a bowl of plain ramen without the savouriness of meat; not my cup of tea.

Chilled soba was still the best; refreshing and totally addictive! I had such a great time slurping my noodles after dipping them into the light sauce. They were gone in no time! Thankfully, Alex couldn't finish his portion and i happily helped myself to them.

Honestly, i couldn't fathom why i had such a strong prejudice against soba in the past. What have i been missing out all these years?!?! You know when's the best thing to eat soba? Summer and Singapore is literally summer all year round!

The soba cha is available for package although i find the pricing of S$10.80 to be on the high side; in essence, i could have 36 cups of soba cha in the restaurant if it continues to be sold at S$0.30 each.

Tomita Lavender Museum @ Farm Tomita [Furano, Hokkaido, Japan]

This was previously shared in my posting for Farm Tomita's Greenhouse but i would like to draw your attention to the bigger house in background of the picture.

Many visitors would give it a miss; thinking it's just a commercial outlet for the famous farm and would rather spend time in the great outdoors where millions of selfies can be taken at the charming flower fields.

They are not wrong as it was indeed the case on the ground floor; however, do remember to check out the second floor as it's where Tomita Lavender Museum is housed!

The colours of the real flowers outside didn't appeal to you and the photographs turned out too dull? You may take advantage of this humongous backdrop to secure the perfect farm tomita photo.

Type of flowers species grown at Farm Tomita - as they were seasonal, i am afraid you wouldn't have the fortune to see all the species blooming at the same time.

Noted that i mentioned it's Tomita Lavender Museum and not simply as Lavender Museum; this was because the museum started off with a history of Farm Tomita and its development since 1903.

You would also have the opportunity to see the machines used to distill the lavender flowers into the important essential oil that relaxes the body and mind.

Aside from the popular essential oil, lavender can also be made into perfume and traditionally, potpourri sachets. Nowadays, the usage is extended to even include soap!

View of the ground floor from the second floor.

Given the elevated view, it made perfect sense to have an open window / balcony looking out into the spectacularly vibrant flower field; in this case, the Hanabito Field!

Panorama for your viewing pleasure; it's a very quiet place. In the about 10 over minutes i was on the second floor, i counted less than 10 persons!

The Greenhouse of Farm Tomita! Click here for more information.

Alex was too lazy to come up and he's totally uninterested in museums; preferring to soak in the atmosphere whenever he is overseas.

Oh, didn't realise there's a separate balcony on the other side which faced the agricultural land. Obviously had to check it out even though my travel mates were patiently waiting for me,

Honestly nothing much except for the Tokachi Volcanic Group mountains.

I believe you would have also noticed the beautiful stained glass adorning one part of the roof; think it's more an ornamental feature than something of historical value.

Whatever the case, you can't deny that they stand out among the decor in the building.

Sin Durian - Sinfully Addictive @ Aljunied Crescent (Next to Geylang East Hawker Centre) [Singapore] #sindurian

The meal, consisting of a plate of horfun and a serving of rojak, shared between two persons at a coffee shop next to Geylang East hawker centre, wasn't very filling for my mom and i and i was wondering what else to have to bulk up our stomachs.

While we were strolling towards the bus stop, i caught sight of this brightly lit durian shop. Now, i am particular when it comes to durians as many operators are, simply put, dishonest and i prefer to spend my money at reputable establishments like Ah Seng Durian or Sindy Durians.

Hence, i was hesitant to give Sin Durian a try even though it had been almost a year since i last had a bite of that spiky, stinky fruit. Surprisingly, my mom expressed a rare enthusiasm and said we should go for just one fruit.

We went with the king of durians; the musang king that cost a pricey S$19 a kilogram. In normal circumstances, one should always opt for the cheaper species first and then slowly advance to the expensive ones.

However, since mom only wanted ONE king of the fruit, having the most expensive one makes perfect sense!

Even though i was eagerly taking photo after photo, i was literally swallowing my saliva as i couldn't wait to have the yellow flesh swirling in my mouth! I miss you very much, durian!

Pulpy without being overly mushy; i can feel the pretty flat seed hidden within as i pressed it down in anticipation of its grand entry down my throat.

It was bitter as expected for the highly sought cat mountain king species and super satisfying to have, with a high flesh to seed ratio. I had to intimately pick the seed with remnants of durian's flesh so that nothing will be wasted.

With just seven seeds (S$28 worth by the way), we were left craving for more and had to go for a second fruit! This time, it's cheaper at S$15.

Fruit was smaller but the quality was better; meat was intensely bitter yet balanced with a sweetness that will negate the exercises i have been doing to lose some pounds! Would this kick start my durian addiction!? Not when Christmas is also coming!

FX Hotel Metrolink Makkasan - Next to Phetchaburi MRT Station & Near Airport Rail Link Station @ Bangkok [Thailand]

There's a reason why i got such a good deal for my airfare to Hokkaido; i had to transit in Bangkok and since i made it a point to visit the city of angels every year, it's an opportunity for me to make use of the almost 18-hour transit window to meet my objective in year 2018!

A hotel was needed and while i can consider the hotels around and / or at Suvarnabhumi Airport, i thought it's more convenient to get a city near any of the airport rail link station.

I actually worked backward and gave some deep thought on what i wanted to do in Bangkok; massage at Urban Retreat, Thai omelette with rice at Pier 21 food court etc. A search on hotels.com map gave me a hotel near to not just the Makassan Airport Rail Link but also the Phetchaburi MRT Station; the FX Hotel Metrolink Makkasan.

Honestly, the walk from the airport rail link was about 10 minutes which can be tiresome if i had lugged around all my luggage. Thankfully for the baggage service at the airport; i just needed a backpack for this one-night stay.

Checking in was a breeze and the hotel receptionist spoke decent English. Key card for room number 510 was given, together with the complimentary WiFi password.

The modern yet spacious hotel room; compared to what we had at Sapporo for the past few days, the space was a luxury and i almost wanted to roll around the tiled floor (something i wouldn't be able to do back in my room at Unizo Inn, Sapporo).

To be frank, i was already prepared for the infamously small hotel room in Japan and decided to get a slightly more premium room in Bangkok; the 30-square meter premier room. In contrast, the basic is the 26-square meter superior room which cost only about S$9 cheaper.

Usual stuff but there was one thing that's missing from where it should be. Not the television that was mounted on the wall right in front of the bed; i couldn't find the bloody fridge!

Found the bar fridge eventually in the wardrobe that also housed the hair dryer, the in-room safe, extra pillow, bathrobes and slippers. Still find it strange to have the fridge in the wardrobe, especially when the room wasn't exactly small in the first place.

Bright bathroom with a shower; darn, i do miss the Japanese soaking tubs and the provision of an electronic bidet that's literally the norm in toilets at Hokkaido! :(

It only struck me at this point that FX Hotel Metrolink Makkasan is managed by Furama Hotels International! So what does the X mean? Xtreme, Xtra, Xemplary?

Regardless, it appeared to be an express version of Furama hotel (similar to Holiday Inn Express) although the management still managed to squeeze in a fitness room and a pool!

Open air pool that looked out to the skyline of Bangkok. Seemed not bad but there's more to the picture which i would show shortly.

Pool was incredibly small and it will be a squeeze with just five kids in it! Furthermore, there were yellow stains that even though might not translate into a cleanliness issue; it did give the impression the pool might not have been maintained often.

Breakfast for two persons was included in my package! It's common for me to skip the hotel breakfast in Bangkok as there were so much better food outside on the streets but this time, i made it a point to step in the cheery-looking metro cafe.

Reason being i had to catch the morning flight back to Singapore and time wasn't on our side! As you can see, it was a decent selection; nothing too extravagant.

I am happy with my usual toast and jam. Special mention to the fried noodle which tasted as good as what you can get from the food stalls along Bangkok streets.

=====

In all, i would recommend visitors to consider the 90-room FX Hotel Metrolink Makkasan if they prefer to have a place that's well connected to the subway bringing you to the vibrant downtown and to the airport rail link sending you directly back to the international airport.

Sakaimachi Street - Look, See, Eat, Shop Down Memory Lane @ Otaru [Hokkaido, Japan]

$

If you are faced with limited time in the scenic port city of Otaru and would like to make it worth your trouble, just go straight to Sakaimachi Street where there are plenty to look, see, eat and shop!

After exploring the fascinating music box museum at the corner of the T-junction that leads down to the merchant street, i noticed this structure that looked like a replica of a lighthouse. Bet there must be a story about it although i couldn't find much English information about it.

It was summer in Hokkaido and such open air festivals, where people just lounge around to drink beer and bask in the performances of local musicians, were said to be common.

Free WiFi - please be assured that there are plenty of instagram-worthy spots and such free network would come in handy for you to upload the pictures to your social media account!

Absolutely adore the melon bear mascot; classic move was to open its mouth big big to create the visual illusion that the ferocious being is going to chomp down a human's head.

Many old buildings lined the almost 800-meter long street and as it was already quite late when we arrived; we didn't manage to check out every one of them.

Closure of the road to convert it into a pedestrian street; not sure if it is a permanent arrangement but i must admit it made walking a lot less dangerous without motor vehicles zooming past us while we struggled to make full use of our limited time!

Wind chimes strung to the lampposts - so relaxing to hear their crystal crisp melodies in the cool, breezy summer day!

Otaru is renowned for its glassware and you can find dozens of commercial entities hawking their products! I love glass yet at the same time, i am afraid as countless items have been destroyed by my butter fingers.

Nevertheless, you can't deny their dazzling beauty!

Dessert time - melon double fromage cake together with the original Double Fromage Cheesecake and Lab Lab Choux at LeTAO Cheese Cake Lab. For review, click here.

Smoking corner! I did notice during my trips that smoking areas are usually decked out with vending machines too. Maybe the smokers need a drink to cover the cigarette smell after a puff.

More wind chimes; seemed like there was a display of glass wind chimes by different factories and designers on the day we visited.

All the while, i thought the above was kindly put out by the shopkeeper for cats to hide from the sun or the snow but after i ran through the wordings using google translate; i think it was a furnace for glass making. Cheated my feelings....

Aside from LeTAO, Otaru is also famous for two other dessert brands; Rokatei (六花亭) and Kitakaro (北菓楼) and they are nicely located next to each other!

I didn't have any more stomach to try any more dessert but even if i were able to; i can't as the cafe at Kitakaro (北菓楼) was already closed.

Sampling was also limited as it's nearing closing time. I should have visited Japan when i am younger given my higher metabolism and larger (stomach) capacity for sweet things then!

Always on the lookout for piggy banks to add to my collection, i was ecstatic to find the above in a shop. Sadly, the material was hard-plastic and they were priced beyond my threshold.

And why was the coin slot at the bottom?!

An exquisite, delicate gift for those who love to write - the glass pens! For more pictures and the prices, please click here

6.30 pm and the street was still pretty crowded; can't imagine if i were to reach at the peak afternoon period when most shops would be open for business.

Doesn't this remind you of a house in medieval Europe?

Glass bowls; the whole shop was literally filled with easily breakable materials. No matter how pretty they look, i wouldn't buy them as the risk for me to break them into a million pieces is sky high.

Limited summer edition.

More shops; no time to enter as it's dinnertime and the fried chicken we had for lunch at Wakadori Jidai Naruto Honten was long digested.

Oh my gosh, this would be a die die must have for my piggy bank collection; pity, they were pure glass. I kept searching for glass piggy banks and disappointingly, couldn't find any on this inaugural trip to Japan.

Wah, a nice photo spot!

Cannot anyhow hor as the rickshaw had an owner although you can engage his pulling service to ride around the place for a fee. Unlike the often thin, scrawny trishaw riders we see in Singapore, the rickshaw pullers wore incredibly short shorts to show off their muscular calves!

An out-of-place structure; likely a cargo container that had undergone a makeover.

Nature was halfway through eating the concrete building.

Facade filled with pictures of mouthwatering dishes; eatery was closed though.

Divination lots; as it was in Japanese, we didn't want to spend that 100 yen on something we can't even read and understand.

Street view again - at this point, the street lamps had started lighting up.

Wind chimes outside a shop; in Singapore, putting out a wind chime might not be such a good idea given the thunderstorms and strong winds we face. It can be very eerie hearing the chimes late at night.

Old school Japanese building!

This "Island Spirit" shop is interesting; basically you choose three pendants according to your horoscope, your blood type and the charm you would like and string them up into a necklace to be worn. Frankly, i kind of regretted not getting it.

Cute dog on a walk!

Now, i have mentioned to friends that i enjoyed the food in Japan even though i did face a few cases where the food failed to impress; like this takopachi lookalike which was essentially bad tasting pancake rolled into a ball and drenched in cloyingly sweet syrup.

So adorable! I think Hokkaido doesn't rain much during summer as the humongous dolls would be ruined should rain suddenly strike; which is often the case in our little red dot.

See that round moon in the sky? It was a day before the 15th day of the lunar month.

Another photo spot - i believe i would have a great time taking photos of the expressive Jovyn if she were to visit Sakaimachi Street with me!

Another ancient Japanese dwelling.

Ainu cultural products; who knows about the Ainu? They are the "indigenous people of Japan" and were mostly concentrated in northern Japan, especially Hokkaido.

What's ahead of us again!?

More wind chimes; this time on eye-catching red racks!

I should have generated a separate post since there were so many pictures on the wind chime displays. Problem is, i don't have much to talk about them since they seemed to be of the same shape and size but with varying patterns.

More food options; like true blue Singaporeans, the six of us relied heavily on crowd within the restaurants and length of the queue to determine if the place is worth a try.

Anpanman; a very popular comic character in Japan!

Golden retriever! Although i have indicated many times that i am never going to keep a pet again; we all know that it's always too early to say never. Should that never turn to opportunity, i would love to have a golden retriever or a mongrel as a pet.

Want to be a Japanese for a few hours and walk around with a kimono? You may rent the attire in the above shop for 3,800 yen (less than S$50) for an hour, 4,800 yen for two hours or 5,800 yen for three hours!

Would love to have another taste of the rich and creamy Hokkaido milk! At one stage in Japan, i was craving so much for the milk; i resorted to buying a liter pack from a supermarket.

Many people were crowding around the above and being the typical, nosy Singaporeans Alex and i are, we knew we had to take a closer look.

Seemed like some kind of light ceremony even though i am clueless as to its origin and cultural significance. I did notice a lot of youngsters though.

Maybe those who understand Japanese can enlighten me...

Honestly, i had the intention to purposely arrange for a day trip to Otaru when i was in Sapporo as i didn't explore the city sufficiently. In the many shops that we walked past, they were more than just shopping as some of them would arrange for workshops to make glass; a couple few were museums etc.

And i didn't feel that i had spent enough time soaking in the relaxed atmosphere! Sadly, we didn't make it back to Otaru as we had to rely heavily on public transport in Sapporo and that kind of tired us out.

This rickshaw was there for decorative purpose and i had to ask Alex to be my model. Yes, he was still holding on to that disgusting pancake ball thingy!

Last picture to wrap up the post!

Hotel Anika - Conveniently Located in the Heart of the Town Centre @ Kluang [Johor, Malaysia]

My friend and i, together with my elder sister, made an impromptu self-driving trip to the middle of Johor over the weekend and i really enjoyed it despite the sunny weather at Kluang!

I will need some time to work on the itinerary to be shared with the rest of you but in the meantime, let's start the ball rolling with my review on our one-night stay at Hotel Anika.

Given our age (two nearing 40 and one slightly above 40), convenience is key to our choice of accommodation and aside from being in the heart of the town, Hotel Anika is within walking distance to the famous Kluang Rail Coffee and just a few doors from the popular Star Restaurant!

The facade appeared to be from the 1980s or early 1990s but it didn't seem that old when i stepped into the spacious lobby with classy, marbled tiles.

Our assigned room was on level 10 and even though there were two lifts, their technology must have been stuck in the 80s / 90s; they were slow!

Something strange popped up right after we exited the lift on our floor; an iron and an ironing board that's permanently attached to the wall! Hm.... Guess i shouldn't be surprised to find a half naked man ironing his wrinkled shirt in the middle of the night.

Room 1008 - don't you just love the unique room label that's lit by LED lights that dispersed right at the bottom? Would be more cool if the light was that of a rainbow spectrum.

Welcome to our executive deluxe room that came with a king sized bed and commanded a space that's 40 square meters! We initially opted for a deluxe twin but since the sister was joining, my friend felt that it's more comfortable to secure a bigger room that cost only about S$10 more.

You know what? I love it when the flooring isn't carpeted; carpet tends to trap a lot of dust and dirt and might not be as clean as you thought they are. With parquet / vinyl flooring, it's easier to even pick up a strand of hair using our naked eyes!

Our room looked small from the pictures? Let me show you a panorama of the room; i should actively utilize this nifty function on my iPhone as it gives everyone a better perspective! Anyway, we requested for an extra bed (i think it's RM 50 more) as it might feel weird to have my sister on the same bed with my friend.

The pillar in the middle would have been an eyesore but the designer had cleverly placed the television there to divert our attention; am not complaining as the screen was physically nearer to me when i laid on the bed to the watch the movies.

Desk with bottles of complimentary water, an electric kettle and a bar fridge; latter of which was located in a normal location (versus the one i found in the wardrobe at Bangkok's FX Hotel Metrolink Makkasan).

Separate dressing table on the other end!

Wardrobe was next to the entrance and there was an iron and also a small ironing board! My guess is that the ones near the lift would likely be used by the housekeeping team. Nevertheless, it's weird to have them so openly displayed.

Clean toilet; a hand spray was provided as in the case for many hotels in Malaysia but after my virgin visit to Japan; having an electronic bidet is THE thing to have for any hotel.

Bathtub which was rather useless for me nowadays since i find soaking in it a blatant waste of time! In addition, i prefer to shower in a typical cubicle as it can be slippery to stand in a bathtub and shower.

Typical hotel toiletries; as i only brought along a bag for this trip, i made use of most of the items; like shower gel, shampoo and toothpaste!

Yes, the dryer was provided too.

Oh yes, the view from our hotel room! Devoid of any high rise building, there's nothing interesting about the scenery ahead of us. From this spot, however, you can spot the bus terminal on your right, the Plaza Kluang Parade mall (the one with Parkson department store) and the newest Kluang Mall behind it.

The other spot was better where you can take in the sights of Gunung Lambak, a small 510-meter mountain that's ranked #1 on TripAdvisor on things to do in Kluang!

This angle faced east which means i should have woken up earlier to catch the sunrise! Didn't materialize for sure as weekends are the best time for me to sleep in slightly longer.

I have come to the end of this post as the rate we paid via Agoda.com didn't include breakfast and Hotel Anika doesn't offer any facilities like gym or pool that would have interest me.

When I Am Old - Meaningful Words for People with Elderly Parents @ UK Farm [Kluang, Johor, Malaysia]

Said to be the largest goat farm in Malaysia and ranked #2 on the list of things to do in Kluang; i would have expected my trip to be filled entirely with activities that should bring me back to my childhood; where i spent a good part in the village.

It did and i had a fun time despite the terribly hot weather that typical Singaporeans would curse and swear of; anyway, i shall leave more details with a separate posting.

I was more drawn to a poster that first appeared at the ticketing entrance before we started our farm tour and then we noticed the same poster at two other locations. It would not have generated much interest if it's a publicity poster promoting the benefits of goat's milk etc.

But, the silhouette of a man holding on to a child with tons of Chinese characters under the main heading "when i am old" was really out of place in a commercial farm. We were curious and proceeded to read the text, given our rusty grasp of Chinese words.

Translation as follows; forgive me if i didn't manage to translate them to the actual gist and emotions described in Chinese. Just as i am bad in Chinese; i am honestly not that well versed in English too.

When I am old, I am no longer the original me.
Please understand, and be patient with me.

When I make a mess of myself during mealtimes,
and should I forget how to tie my shoelaces,
please recall the times I calmly taught you when you were young.

When I repeat myself again and again on topics you have heard a million times before,
please exercise patience to listen and do not interrupt me.
When you were young, I had to read the same bedtime story again and again till you fell asleep.

When I need your assistance to help me bath, please do not scold me.
Still remember the numerous ways i used to coax you to step into the shower when you were a kid?

When I am exposed to new technology that's hard to understand, do not laugh at me.
Think of the times when I had to patiently answered your every "why".

When my legs are tired and I can't walk further,
please use your strong arms and hold me,
just like the way I did when you were learning to walk.

When I suddenly forget what we are talking about,
please give me a bit of time to recall.
Frankly, what we talk about isn't important.
So long you are listening to me, i am already satisfied.

As you see me get older and older, please do not be sad.
Understand me, support me; just as i did when you came into the world.

In the beginning, I guided you to adulthood.
Now, please accompany me on my last journey in life.

Give me your love and patience and I would return with a smile filled with gratefulness. This smile also consists of my limitless love for you.

Wish every family happiness.

I was seriously touched by the words, especially with my parents now in their 60s and i am unsure if my friend and sister had noticed the tears welling up in my eyes when i read the content aloud. I constantly have to remind myself to be patient; a difficult feat given my character.

However, i will try.

Kluang Itinerary - 2 Days, 1 Night Road Trip with a Rented Car @ The Heart of Johor [Malaysia] #kluang #itinerary

The wanderlust in me is strong and even though i have yet to finish 20% of my Hokkaido's trip in this blog, the desire to travel overseas continues to beckon and today, i am going to share with you my 2 days, 1 night itinerary to Kluang in Johor state, Malaysia!

Departing from my usual style for itineraries, i shall concentrate on just a main itinerary and then the separate postings for each attraction, dining establishment etc. There wouldn't be details for each day and i guess that will help me in clearing my backlog.

As indicated in the subject, it's a road trip which means we rented a car in the state capital of Johor Bahru and drove all the way to the heart of Johor state! I absolutely love being in control of where we can go and what we can do and without further ado, let's start with my short getaway from Singapore.

Day One (02 December 2017)
- Hawk Rent A Car
- UK Farm
- Tong Huat Confectionery
- Yuen Fatt Biscuit
- Star Coffee House & Restaurant
- Kluang Mall
- Restoran Tan Ching Hing (Ah Fu Satay)

[7.28 am] Queuing to take the 8 am railway shuttle from Singapore to Johor Bahru (JB). With increased number of tourists visiting JB due to the stronger Singapore currency, taking the shuttle train will eliminate the frustration of being stuck in a jam across the causeway.

Tickets can be purchased via EasyBook and before you join the queue, do note that you are required to exchange for the physical ticket at the KTM counter near the Woodlands Checkpoint's taxi stand.

In a journey that takes only about five minutes, we had arrived at JB sentral station! No further immigration required as all immigration procedures shall take place before you embark the train at Woodlands Checkpoint.

[8.57 am] Collection of the rented car was at 10 am and we decided to have a traditional Southeast Asia kopi and kaya toast breakfast at Hua Mui Coffee House

Thankfully we arrived earlier as the queue started building up about 30 minutes later! No review on Hua Mui as i blogged about it earlier this year. Please check out the review here

[10.00 am] After the usual filling up of form for confirmation of rental at Hawk Rent A Car shop in Menara Ansar, we were brought to our allocated Perodua Bezza 1.3 Auto!

[10.16 am] After the necessary checking for existing damages, we were off on our road trip! As we didn't opt for a GPS in the car, we relied heavily on the Google Maps in our phones! Technology rocks!

Oh, the Paradigm Mall that has been in the news recently for being the largest shopping centre in JB with a floor space that's even bigger than Singapore's Vivo City.

[10.28 am] In line to enter the North South Highway; as toll fees would be imposed, do prepare a Touch N Go card for convenience; it works like Singapore's EZ Link card.

Leisure drive along the highway; i am the designated driver given my experience of driving overseas (in Jeju Island, South Korea and the recent Hokkaido) and the lesson learnt. (i.e. car accident that is)

Please be assured that i am not the one taking the photographs; Andrew, my reliable vehicle commander, was the one shooting the pictures. Our other companion, Joyce, was busy dozing on and off.

[11.24 am] Less than an hour later, we took Exit 244 and arrived at a town that used to be a major stopover before the highway was completed; Ayer Hitam!

Unfortunately, it's a transit point for us and we didn't plan / manage to check out what this ceramic town has to offer, other than ceramic. Maybe next time?

[11.33 am] Zenxin Organic Park - one of three major farm visits in Kluang, our purpose was more to check out the store selling organic farm products and decide if we should drop by the next day before returning to Singapore.

There's an entrance fee to enter the farm and while it's quite reasonably priced; we had missed the timing for organic farm walk and the restaurant didn't appeal to us as the place for our first meal in Kluang.

In case you are interested, there are tour packages for the entire family that you can book three days in advance. I am also appending the farm map for your reference.

[11.52 am] The next attraction, UK Farm, was just a short drive away but the road condition was very different; dirt path, no street light and many potholes!

Road seemed never ending!

[12.03 pm] Drive from main entrance to UK Farm covered a distance of about 6 kilometers! By the way, i don't think the UK refers to United Kingdom. Nevertheless, it's the biggest goat farm in the whole of Malaysia and a visit to the farm was ranked number 2 on TripAdvisor!

So what did we do? We had lunch (i had a great lamb chop), fed the goats / kids, watched a goat milking process, fed the ducks, the chickens, the ostriches, the deer and the rabbits and visited Jakun village.

Weather was insanely hot but i did have fun; it was like a trip down memory lane as it reminded me of my kampong days when i was a kid and we even got to take an old, refurbished bus. Shall share more in due course!

[3.47 pm] Farmland spotted along the way. Do allocate a few hours if you wish to take up the RM 47.70 (per adult) farm tour at UK Farm. A child (age 3-12) ticket cost RM 37.10.

[4.26 pm] Hotel Anika - our accommodation for the night! For more pictures and my review of this hotel (ranked #1 out of 9 Kluang hotels) can be found here

Hotel Anika  is quite easy to find as it's not common to have a building over 10 storeys high in Kluang. Alternatively, you just need to look out for the purple-themed Milky Cake House building; the hotel is right across the road.

[4.50 pm] After throwing our belongings in the room, we rushed out to Tong Huat Confectionery! My sister did some research beforehand and the traditional bakery was said to be famous for its tau sar piah; problem was, it closes at 6 pm and it doesn't open on Sundays!

[5.10 pm] Sadly, the tar sar piah had sold out and sensing my sister's disappointment, we took to the road again to another as famous confectionery; Yuen Fatt Biscuit! Even though it also sells tau sar piah, the signature product was the odd-shaped Shanghai mooncake! Heng still have stock.

[5.30 pm] Another mad rush to the retro looking Star Coffee House & Restaurant as we had made a reservation (thanks to my Malaysian friend, Louis Ling) for 5.30 pm at this popular eater that's well known for its crispy duck! Our dinner was extremely good and i can't imagine that we paid less than S$30 for four dishes.

[6.45 pm] With a full tummy, it's time for shopping and a few doors away from Star restaurant was The Store! I thought it's only two floors; turned out there were like five or six floors of merchandise!

So much to see, so much i want to buy yet i couldn't as i would have to carry them back on public transportation after i returned the rental car in JB! Hence, i am careful and only bought a pack of Old Town Extra Rich 3-in-1 coffee for only RM 11.99...

[7.40 pm] The Star restaurant and The Store were right beside Hotel Anika and after our sweaty farm tour at UK Farm, there's a need to take a quick shower before we drove out again. This time, it's to the best shopping centre in Kluang; the Kluang Mall.

We can't compare its scale and offerings with shopping malls in the cities; however, it is equipped with a cinema and counts notable brands like H&M, Uniqlo etc as its occupants. I even managed to purchase six tees and three shirts!

[9.21 pm] Supper time at Restoran Tan Ching Hing! It was crowded although it's past dinner time and my objective that evening was to get my tummy stuffed with the supposedly outstanding Ah Fu Satay before ending the night.

Day Two (03 December 2017)
- Kluang Rail Coffee
- Street Art Kluang
- Kluang Coffee Powder Shop
- Restoran Sin Keong Kee
- Johor Premium Outlets

[7.40 am] Crawled out of bed for this fantastic view of Gunung Lambak! I could have awakened earlier to catch the sunrise but i was, simply put, exhausted.

[8.06 am] Out of the hotel for breakfast and saw this huge ass motor vehicle parked at the hotel's carpark; from the license plate, i gathered it hauled from the heilongjiang province in China; that's far!

Woah, didn't know Kota Tinggi is along the way. Maybe i could plan my trip next time to include Kota Tinggi too. There are so many places to visit in Malaysia and most Singaporeans are only fixated in just a selected few.

Standing on the road divider outside Hotel Anika; our breakfast destination was right ahead at the end of the T-junction. How many meters away; 300?

[8.12 am] Many Kluang visitors came via train and the first thing they would likely do when they disembarked was to seek out the Kluang Rail Coffee shop!

Frankly, i often confused Klang with Kluang. While the former is synonymous with bak kut teh, Kluang is well known for its coffee and the Kluang Railway Coffee is always prominently featured on travel shows and documentaries for its timeless decor, kopi, toast and nasi lemak!

[9.06 am] Time to digest the food at the nearby Street Art Kluang! Having Joyce tagging along is fun, especially when you need a wide variety of expressions for photo taking! There's a reason why Joyvn is so expressive; genetic inheritance from the mom.

[9.41 am] Chanced upon a pet shop! When Rubee was still around, i would be mindful to walk into a pet shop whenever i saw one; in case there are treats or accessories i could buy to pamper him.

Andrew is a cat lover and like me in the past, he would check out the pet store whenever he sees one! As i didn't have anything to buy, i went straight to the live pets section and my heart totally melted at the sight of super adorable munchkins.

Bomba?! A fire station is called a bomba in Malay?

A coffee shop near Hotel Anika; if i am extending my stay in Kluang for another day or two, there's a high chance i would dine there as it did appear pretty crowded.

At the garment street next to the hotel; technically, it's beside the Milky Cake House and the street was thought out by me as i did notice quite a number of shops rolls of cloths, garments etc.

Alex didn't join us as he couldn't get his passport extended in time and poor boy has to work on Saturday. If he were with us, i can guarantee you he would ask to have a meal at McDonald's!

Oh, didn't know Plaza Kluang Parade mall (with Parkson department store) was so close to Hotel Anika. Pity, we didn't have sufficient time to visit. :(

[10.52 am] Drove out of the hotel's basement carpark and i knew i had to stop by the road when i saw this row of interesting shophouses! Instead of the stone lions guarding the shop on the ground floor, they were perched on the roof like gargoyles!

[10.55 am[ As mentioned previously, Kluang is known for its coffee and although a visit to the Kluang Coffee Powder Factory is often recommended, the factory doesn't operate on Sundays! Fret not, there's always the affiliated Kluang Coffee Powder shop where you can continue to buy their signature coffee (be it in bean, powder, 3-in-1 format etc) and bring back to Singapore.

[11.00 am] Taking another route to the North South Highway because Google Map said so! We didn't regret the choice as it brought us along a scenic road with palm plantations on both sides.

[11.49 am] I think this is the Simpang Renggam toll station; we actually forgot about buying organic produce at Zenxin Organic Park and remembered only when we were halfway to this toll station. Oh well, my sister did say you can find Zenxin produce at supermarkets in JB. In addition, Zenxin actually exports to Singapore too.

Highway where i can clock a speed of 110 kilometers without being fined. Nevertheless, safety comes first and it's always good to maintain a safe distance from the car in front of you.

A pickup truck loaded with pineapples; likely in anticipation of the coming Chinese New Year when demand for pineapple jam shot up! For those who are unaware, pineapple tarts are hugely popular as festive gifts for the Chinese.

[12.29 am] Roasted delights at Restoran Sin Keong Kee! The roast pork was epic and i was so taken in by their homemade sour plum sauce; it's a perfect dip for the roast duck!

[1.23 pm] My first visit to Johor Premium Outlets (known affectionately as JPO) and it happened to be the weekend with even more discounts!

I could have bought so much more but the queues outside the brands i am interested in were too long and i could only managed to secure a pair of Hush Puppies shoes!

[4.21 pm] With any rented car, it's a must to pump back the petrol and ensure the tank is full before you return. We almost wanted to go for car washing as the car was actually very dusty; no thanks to the ride we made to UK Farm.

[4.34 pm] Returned the rental car and given my overseas driving experiences, the car was obviously handed back in a good condition. Special thanks to Andrew who engaged me throughout the driving so that i remained alert and awake.

Back to reality at the custom as i was stuck for about an hour at the Malaysian immigration. It's time for me to get an MACS card for fast track clearance as Joyce was out in like 10 minutes?!

Warm Bento Box from Seicomart - I Assumed Wrongly @ Hokkaido [Japan]

Unlike convenience stores in Singapore, the ones in Japan offered a lot more in terms of food and services and your purchase is always greeted with a sweet smile, a bow and a string of polite-sounding Japanese words.

My breakfasts (and sometimes lunches) in Hokkaido were often settled at the convenience stores like Lawson, Family Mart and the Hokkaido-originated Seicomart. What i have is usually on the 'safe' side but i had been noticing this publicity flag for a particular bento.

Being able to recognise Chinese characters helped a bit in translation and i figured it's a Hokkaido  product and said to have good reviews. I absolutely have no idea what meat it was and assumed from the picture it's unagi (Japanese eel).

It was 2.11 pm and we were running a bit late for lunch; in fact, we were at a rest station on a highway in between Furano and Otaru and there's about an hour to go before we even reached Otaru. A good excuse to try the bento!

Priced at 490 yen, (about S$6), i thought it was quite a good deal with five pieces of grilled unagi. Or so i thought before i actually opened the box and took a bite.

Because when i did and chomped off half a piece of what appeared to be grilled unagi, i turned it over as it didn't taste anything like unagi. That's when i literally rolled my eyes for my stupidity; it's grilled fish! Luckily, the taste was alright even though i couldn't help but felt disappointed.

Okay, bye!

=====

Of course there are a lot more fun and memorable things i did in Hokkaido and you may read my 8 days, 7 nights' (half of which were self drive) itinerary to Hokkaido at the separate posting here.

Song Fa Bak Kut Teh (松發肉骨茶) @ Yishun's Northpoint City Mall [Singapore]

Singapore's peppery style bak kut teh has gained a fiercely loyal following among those who have tried it and while i had tasted the soup from Ng Ah Sio, Founder's, Ya Hua etc, the one still outstanding was Song Fa Bak Kut Teh!

Strangely, i never got round to patronising the shop until it set up a branch at Northpoint! Convenience played a very important part, especially with the recent thunderstorm weather in Singapore.

Mindful that i am at my heaviest now, i insisted on getting a pot of aged pu-er tea to wash down the fats! There were only three of us and i thought it was an overkill to have six, tiny cups.

Next time, i am insisting on having just the pot so that we can drink to our fill! With a mouth as big as mine, it's torturing to drink from a doll-sized teacup!

My premium loin ribs soup with a plate of dough fritters and a bowl of white rice! As mentioned before, don't bother with normal pork ribs; premium loin ribs (known as special dragon bone in Chinese) would be the cut to go.

The texture of premium loin meat was the kind i enjoyed; meaty, fatty yet the ability to slip easily off the bone. Extremely shiok when you eat it with white rice that's swimming in the pepper infused broth!

Free refill for the soup - tourists who are visiting Singapore for the first time should note that most bak kut teh stores offer free refills for the soup; hence, don't be shy to ask.

My personal take is that the pepper content seemed to be higher at Song Fa as compared to my favourite Ya Hua; a tad too peppery for me even though i can imagine how desirable it can be for some to slurp down a nasal-clearing peppery soup when it's pouring cats and dogs outside!

Leaving the best for the last; i usually ignored the cloves of garlic but this time round, i gamely took a bite and it was amazingly soft! The garlic remained rich in flavour despite losing its spiciness.

Finally, after two refills of soup.

Farm Tomita - The Mother of All Flower Fields @ Hokkaido [Japan] #farmtomita

There's a reason for labeling farm tomita as the mother of all flower fields in Hokkaido although i think you can already guess by me publishing sub postings in the past few weeks; namely, the Tomita Lavender Museum, the Greenhouse, the Furano Melon and the beautiful Irodori & Forest Fields!

So why did i share with you such a boring picture (above)? Because that was the exact scene that greeted us after we parked our car; the weather was dreary and there was still a very light drizzle.

Hardly encouraging for a visit to the flower fields and we decided to hide under the protection of the wooden hut to wait out the rain. p.s. it's also a good opportunity to check out what's for sale in the store.

I took the excuse to gobble down my breakfast; a burger from the 7-11 convenience stall near our airbnb in Furano. Not fantastic but the patty was thick.

With a takeaway counter for lavender ice cream right in front of me, i was deliberating if i should have dessert so early in the morning given my stomach sensitivity and that we were only in day two of our trip.

Opted against ice cream although i should have gone with the lavender tea; at the very least, it can help to wash down the oil.

The rain stopped and we excitedly crossed the road to arrive officially at the flower field; it's an instant change in mood with the cool summer climate and the relaxing rows of lavender flowers!

Here's the Greenhouse again.

Sakiwai Field with the backdrop of the Tokachi Volcanic Mountain Range. At first look, Sakiwai Field appeared boring for the layman with mostly shades of purple. The experts would tell you there are four varieties of lavender there; Okamurasaki, Yotei, Hanamoiwa and the Noshi Hayazaki. Obviously i am no expert; those information was taken from the Farm Tomita website

I returned back to the car to take something and right at the carpark was another plot of Lavender Forest Field. Just like Shikisai-No-Oka (四季彩の丘), the lavender wasn't as purplish as i expected them to be.

Before i joined up with my mates, i chanced upon this little store that's on an elevated platform; meaning i would likely find a few great spots to take photos!

For those with sufficient time, this would be the perfect place to have a hot cup of lavender tea while marveling at the spectacular sight ahead of you.

An open air platform was built for those who preferred to make use of the natural sunlight for photo taking. I counted another lone ranger in the vicinity; guess this place was still pretty hidden from most coach-arrived tourists.

On a clear day, this spot would be THE spot to have your picture taken against the various peaks along the Tokachi Volcanic Mountain Range in the background.

Panorama! The fields ahead were Autumn Field and Spring Field.

Merchandise in the store; purple is the corporate colour for Farm Tomita and lavender was everywhere! Can't blame the farm from benefiting from the flower as it was in the lavender business for the past few decades!

Even their motorbike was in purple!

Back on the ground level and I was drawn to the artwork featuring mini humans playing an orchestra.

I can't hear the music even though a bit of imagination told me it would be nice to have some music in the air, like the melody from the accordion musician at Singapore's Lower Pierce Reservoir Park.

Publicity for the Furano Melon; i have heard so much about the hokkaido melon and thought they were all the same. Apparently, the crème de la crème is the Yubari Melon.

Random photos.

There's a photo spot that i thought should be indicated on the map; the impressive row of Austrian pines flanking both sides of the path. From a certain angle, it felt as if the trees were fused together in the end.

Can be a challenge to take selfies though.

Wooden signposts bearing the big name of Farm Tomita were everywhere for you to take picture with. Hence, don't freak out when a group is taking too long with their poses.

Maybe because we were too early; the crowd had yet to descend and there were plenty of space for us to take photo after photo! I have so many and that explained the delay in posting this as there were still about 200 after QC.

As mentioned before in Shikisai-No-Oka; the flower fields looked better from far away. Up close, they were just separate plots of flowers.

Barren plot; remember, the farm needs maintenance too and in my blog, i try to show photographs from numerous angles and of various states. Nothing's ever perfect and if it does, it's only for a short period of time; maybe even just a moment.

Coaches started streaming in via the main entrance!

Photo of the Greenhouse from Hanabito House; a cluster of wooden huts that consisted of commercial sections and the Tomita Lavender Museum! Click here for more information on the museum.

Even though there's a separate post on Tomita Lavender Museum, i didn't share much about the commercial sections; which consisted of a dry / fake flowers area and the more conventional one selling memorabilia.

More pictures for your viewing pleasure.

You can even find lavender wreaths that can be used as decoration on the walls! Colour was a bit dark though and might be mistaken as a wreath for bad occasions (i.e. funeral).

The other section was comparatively interesting even though the pricing was way beyond my budget. What if i bought something and the receiver doesn't like it?

Lavender potpourri was likely a favourite among visitors; however, lavender essential oil has a stronger aroma and in Singapore, the high humidity may not be suitable for potpourri.

This was nicer yet the pricing of almost S$10 for a tube was just too hard to stomach for a poor man like me. Difference between the 760 yen and 420 yen tubes was that the expensive one contained flower buds whereas the cheaper one held just a few stalks of lavender flowers.

The green belt of just grass separating the prettier flower plots with the drain.

Tourists had started streaming in which means many would be hogging good photo spots! Not an issue for me as i don't mind having photo bombers in my pictures!

Greenhouse, Hanabito Field and the Austrian pines path!

Shelter that had plants covering the entire structure! I should have asked for the species and imported some back for one of our buildings which could benefit from having a canopy of natural, fast growing leaves!

Nice photo right?!

Main building with Tomita Lavender Museum on the second level. As indicated in the post on the museum, do remember to take some photos at the balcony on the second floor!

Need food? Check out Cafe Rene! For your reference, please refer to the menu as attached above. I am uploading the photo with original resolution; therefore, you can just right click and save it into your drive.

The entrance had quite a number of shops offering food souvenirs and desserts and you can literally go crazy deciding what would be worth the calories!

First thing for me; the Furano melon! Potato lovers can consider the sweet potatoes with butter. I was inclined to get a boiled corn.....

Eventually settled for a lavender ice cream instead - half expecting it to taste weird like the lavender sweet i got from Nippon Ya at Singapore's ION Orchard but it was, thankfully, pretty light. Of course, the key was to fully enjoy the creaminess of Hokkaido ice cream!

A friend got this lavender cheese cake - i didn't try but i don't remember that friend raving away; so it might be just okay, i guess.

Time to wash your hands!

Lavender soap for visitors to use?! In other countries, the company would likely have to replace it very often as this luxury good would be gone in no time.

Fresh produce for sale!

Love lavenders? Grab a pot at only 907 yen and let the aroma naturally scent your bedroom! Okay, i am not familiar with Singapore's regulations for importation of plants but you may click here to read further.

One slice of Furano melon wasn't sufficient? Get the whole fruit for a fulfilling indulgence! For a moment, i thought one melon cost 9500 yen (more than S$100) although a closer look revealed it's 5 for 9500 yen.

Dried lavender flowers being segregated and bundled up in a workshop. You wouldn't miss it as the aroma intensified as you walk nearer to the building.

Back to the flower fields; specifically Hanabito Field.

Alex with the wooden sign; like me, he was literally blown away by Japan and we were planning for another trip to the Land of the Rising Sun next year. Hopefully we can get a good deal in the air fare!

Narrowleaf Angelon - from far, the flowers looked like lavender flowers and vibrancy wise, it's the same shade we see from professional photographers; the real lavender flowers i saw were very much less vibrant...

Directional signpost.

For those who just disembarked from the coaches, you would definitely take ton of pictures at this area since it's the nearest to the drop off point. I would have done the same too if i am travelling on a packaged tour.

Entrance to the Mother's Garden; which was nurtured by the grandmother of current generation of the tomita's family until she passed on. There were about 50 types of plants in this quiet, tiny garden.

Being a less observant person, i only noticed the fountain said to deliver the fresh water from the mountains! You are free to drink from it, if you dare! The fountain seemed like a person savouring the content from its dripping nose.

Another thing i saw was the tree that bore a lot of fruits! According to the label, it's the European pears! Curious me was so tempted to pluck one just to give it a try. If my elder sister were with me, she might really just pluck one with nil hesitation!

Photo taken from the Greenhouse; among the many photos i shot that day, this photo is my personal favourite! Should this be a retirement home, i would gladly learn Japanese and spend the rest of my life here.

Photo gallery near the Greenhouse.

Many stunning pictures on the flower fields in Farm Tomita! A friend had asked if i prefer Shikisai-No-Oka or Farm Tomita; my answer is that she should visit both!

Sky was finally clearing up!

My visit hasn't ended yet as i followed the crowd to the Irodori Field & Forest Field where the undulating terrain was a literal visual treat! Click here to view more pictures. :)

Star Restaurant (#2 out of 72 Restaurants) in Kluang @ The Heart of Johore [Malaysia]

Star Coffee House & Restaurant - reason for leaving out the words coffee house is because everyone knows it as just the famous Star restaurant that commanded the number 2 ranking for restaurants in Kluang on TripAdvisor!

Before the self-driven trip, i had already marked out a few establishments to have our meals but Star restaurant was given a higher priority for its largely positive online reviews. A further check on its location revealed that it's just a few doors away from Hotel Anika, our accommodation for the night!

In spite of the old school, retro facade that likely didn't change much from the year it was established (1979); the interior was surprisingly quite modern and classy. We were one of the first few customers as reservation was full for the later slots; that said a lot about the popularity.

Photos of celebrities visiting the small town restaurant dotted one section of the restaurant but there's no time to check out the details as there's another reservation for our table at 7pm and we had to decide what to order!

Stir Fried Sweet Potato Leaves - lightly stir fried with the freshness still very much contained within, i liked this even though the sambal version might be more enticing. Both sister and friend found it to be a tad too salty although i was of the opinion that it was just right.

Star Special Homemade Beancurd - my sister is limiting her intake of carbohydrates while my friend is restricting his meat intake; hence, it made sense to order the signature homemade beancurd which came with strips of meat, black fungus and enoki mushrooms!

Texture of beancurd wasn't the smooth type i expected although there was a special, addictive flavour that set it apart from commercial brands. I also loved the smaller-cut portions as i absolutely enjoy eating the skin of the beancurd and there's more to chew with the smaller cut!

Beancurd Skin Rolls - since i like the skin of beancurd so much; i didn't raise any objection when either Joyce or Andrew suggested the beancurd skin rolls. I am secretly overjoyed, to be honest as i know it would be prepared in the form i like best; deep fried.

You notice any difference from your usual beancurd skin rolls? I did and it's obvious as the shape was somewhat round like a dumpling instead of being flat with just a thin layer of meat filling.

They were pretty good with a juicy filling that's meaty with a crisp texture. However, after taking a few pieces, the taste of pork can be rather overbearing and i needed to wash it down with a few cups of tea!

Star Special Crispy Fried Duck - another star recommendation, this was the dish that every blogger was talking about in their review of star restaurant.

You can opt for a full duck but in view of our numbers, there's no way we can manage an entire duck. Not when we were still thinking of supper later in the evening! Hence, a half duck it shall be.

We were almost about to cut up the duck when the waiter came over to, literally, kill the duck a second time! He was amazingly swift and before we knew it, the meat had been stripped off the bones.

The ready-to-eat version; it looked kind of familiar like the way we eat Peking duck! There were differences of course; the duck was deep fried, not roasted and instead of crepe-like pancake, we had buns!

Buns were really soft with a subtle sweetness that made them so delicious. Add in the sprinkling of sesame seeds and you can so imagine the aroma! p.s. do eat them fast while they are still hot.

On its own, the duck meat was already palatable without being overly dry or oily. But add in the fresh cucumber, the sweet sauce and the soft bun and you get bites of contrasting textures that were so, so good!

Can't remember how much i had but i think i easily cleaned up half the buns even though my tummy was almost exploding! To be frank, all three of us were super full when we stepped out of the restaurant!

=====

We had a great dinner and when handed the receipt, my eyes almost popped out as the meal with its luxurious offerings cost less than RM 90! In comparison, half a duck in a quality restaurant at Singapore would have cost us almost RM 60.

No Luck with Tong Huat Traditional Confectionery @ Kluang [Johor, Malaysia]

I was wondering if i should come out with a separate post for Tong Huat Traditional Confectionery in Kluang as i technically didn't buy anything there since the key recommendation, tar sau peah, was already sold out for the day!

Nevertheless, i thought it might be helpful to show you guys and gals what were available in the shop when we arrived at about 4.50pm; an hour plus before they pulled the shutter.

There were a number of handmade Chinese pastries (like Wife's biscuits) which generally didn't appeal to me; i might be Chinese but my affection is with Peranakan Nyonya kueh!

Cookies for lunar new year in 2018 were already out for sale! Now that i have an oven; i think it's harder to get me to spend my hard-earned money. Most of the times, i can bake myself unless it's stuff that involved too much work; like cheesecake!

Frankly, the confectionery felt more like a convenience stall that sells nothing but food. I can find bags of keropok and sweets too! Only issue was that the place was pretty crowded and the items were all over the place. If only they have a concept similar to Biscuit King which would make the experience much more enjoyable.

To their credit, things were priced cheaply; the 70-gram bags of pumpkin chips and fish crackers cost less than S$0.70. I don't think you can find such pricing in expensive Singapore!

Hawk Rent A Car - My First Car Rental Experience in Malaysia @ Johor Bahru

$

Now that i no longer own a car, i have been wanting to rent a car and drive around Malaysia as there are so many places to explore and having a car would be so much more convenient!

I finally rented one online when i visited Kluang a few weekends ago and to be totally honest, i just crawled through a few forums and decided to give Hawk Rent A Car a try.

We proceeded over to Menara Ansar after breakfast at Hua Mei restaurant and the office was an extremely small outfit in the tower. Registration took a while as they were facing problems with the computer / printer.

Aside from the printout of your online confirmation, do remember to bring along your license. International driving license wasn't required but i did bring along mine (made it when i drove in Hokkaido back in August; just in case.

Time to inspect the Perodua Bezza 1.3 Auto car! The staff was really nice and pointed out existing damages that had missed my eyes; there were quite a number, including scratches, non-threatening holes on the glass etc.

To me, it didn't matter to me if the rented car wasn't 'perfect', so long i can still drive it - in my opinion, a less perfect car would be less prone to theft and people who were green eyed.

Beginning our drive to Kluang! If you are interested to know what we did at Kluang, check out my summarized travelogue here

Forgot to share a full photo of the car we were allocated; VH6791, a brown Perodua Bezza 1.3 Auto. Thankfully, it was a smooth drive throughout the journey and i didn't make the mistakes of pressing the accelerator when i switched to "R", thinking it stands for Ride etc.

After the trip, it's back to Menara Ansar again and this time, i had to park at the underground carpark as the open-air lot, reserved for Hawk Rent A Car was already taken. Left the parking ticket on the dashboard and got one of the staff to come down for another round of check to ensure there was no new damage. p.s. car was extremely dirty though.

Rental Rate
2 Full Days - RM 281.96 for Perodua Bezza

The amount above already included GST. Do note that that rental is for minimal 24 hours and any extension beyond 5 hours would be a full day; hence, even though i rented the car from 10am on 02 December, we booked two full days as we prefer to have the flexibility when returning the car.

How to Get Back to City Square from Menara Ansar
Menara Ansar (menara stands for tower in Malay) is actually pretty near to the ever popular City Square shopping centre.

Towards the direction of City Square, you would come to this corridor and wonder if it is safe to walk along and whether it will get us to the shopping mall. A passerby sensed our dilemma and told us to go ahead; so kind right?!

Once we got out of the corridor, there's City Square right across the road!

Day 2 in Hokkaido - Out of My 8 Days, 7 Nights (Mostly Self-Drive) Summer Trip to Japan

First thing we did after leaving the airbnb was to get breakfast and there's no better choice than the convenience stores in this small town! I was like craving for nasi lemak but since there's no way i can get one in 7-11, i shall make do with the prawn rice ball and a beef burger.

I never thought it would be so difficult to eat the rice ball; i literally had to figure out how to wrap the triangular-shaped rice with the piece of seaweed.

Didn't quite succeed; oh well, a hungry man wouldn't care so much and i quickly cleaned it up. Not bad even though the tummy was asking for more. So lucky to have grabbed the beef burger too!

Anyway, it was drizzling although we persisted in continuing our journey to the mother of all flower lands in Hokkaido; Farm Tomita! Aside from the main farm post, you may refer to the sub-postings that included the greenhouse, the tomita lavender museum, the Furano melon and the Irodori & Forest Fields!

Weather had cleared beautifully and there's a clearer view of the mountains of theTokachi Volcanic Group! Hm... how come one of them looked like it was emitting smoke?

Driving towards our next destination; the #1 (out of 158) restaurant in Furano!

Nakafurano Hokusei Ski Area - would have been nice to check it out as the cable ski was still operational. Time wasn't on our side though as we had to be at Otaru that afternoon and the journey from Furano to Otaru was the longest throughout our trip at about 2.5 hours.

Bloody straight road; there's a tendency to speed, especially when there's no car in front of me! I had a really good vehicle commander though; he was worried of losing his life due to my likely negligence and took a great time nagging and nagging, and nagging.

Furano Delice and its unbeatable double fromage cheesecake! If you think the one by LeTao is unforgettable, wait till you have the one from Furano Delice!

I mentioned about this particular street flowers in Hokkaido before. Click here!

Many dragonflies were flying around. Come to think about it, i seldom see dragonflies in Singapore anymore. Maybe because i am usually too lazy to go out on weekends and prefer to hole up in my cozy home.

Sights along the way from Furano to Otaru!

My Hokkaido itinerary was uploaded to google map beforehand but it's easier to rely on the in-car GPS navigation which came with a much larger screen.

Well, it's a long ride and since i am not the driver, i had plenty of time to take photos. The nagging from my vehicle commander can be quite stressful; so i am happy to release my control of the wheel to him.

We were asked to stop in the middle of nowhere.

Giving way to a heavy vehicle transporting some important stuff, i guess. One thing i marvelled about Japan is their dedication to work; the gentleman actually gestured a sincere thank you once he "unblocked" the road. Sadly, i think it's more the older generation who behaved this way.

Another 89.2 kilometers to go.

Abandoned building spotted along the way; if i recall correctly, i think we were passing by a town known as Mikasa. Is it related to the Mikasa brand that gives us volleyball?

A statue to pray to for road safety; did anything happen along this stretch of the road to involve the installation of the statue? The curious mind is always looking for possible answers.

Up till now, we had yet to take the hokkaido expressway!

Finally on the expressway! As you can see from the display, it was a cool 27 degrees Celcius even though the weather so far had appeared as hot as Singapore!

Farmland, farmland and more of them.

What the hell is that!?

Hokkaido Information University - for a moment, i thought it was a university for meteorological science as the Chinese characters are about the same.

We had been on the road for more than 90 minutes and i guess it's timely to see a rest station coming up soon. A toilet break shall be helpful to break the lull of continuous driving!

And it's always nice to see a convenience store; this round, it's Seicomart and if you have been following my blog, you would note the familiarity. It's the place where i assumed the bento box was unagi when it was just fish. :(

I hate to go to the toilets at rest stops when i am overseas but it's a different case in Japan as the toilets were always spick and span!

Throwing our rubbish according to the type of recyclables.

Got a hot can drink! The normal me would have opted for just plain water; however, i needed the coffee to be alert for the driving. Not so much me as Alex was the main driver even though i still performed a very important role as the naggy vehicle commander. Karma is a bitch, Alex.

A recycling centre according to google map.

With the built up environment, i think we were in the vicinity of Hokkaido's capital; Sapporo! It would be a few days later before we check out Sapporo which shall be our last leg of journey in Hokkaido.

A structure along the expressway; not sure what its purpose is? Maybe as a decorative feature on a boring expression or to demarcate as a landmark.

Zenibako Cemetery - one of the regrets i had was not checking out any cemetery when i was in Japan.  That has always been something i do when i am overseas....

13 kilometers to Otaru!

Numerous tunnels later, we arrived at the said-to-be-charming port city of Otaru! How i know? Look to the right and you would see the iconic warehouses.

This building was said to be relatively famous as it was used as the backdrop for a TV show or something; read about it somewhere even though i couldn't find it anymore.

Good thing about Japan; roads were darn organised. Bad thing about Japan; too darn organised with too many roads, streets and lanes! I was trying to find a restaurant and the GPS was bringing us in circles!

It's too conventional to have seafood in Otaru! Let's have thin-skinned fried chicken instead! For review of Wakadori Jidai Naruto Honten, please click here.

Leaving for our airbnb in Otaru and spotted this tower that bears a striking resemblance to its more famous sibling in Sapporo.

Locals were out in traditional outfit in summer, the yukatas!

Court.You.Me - that's the building in the directional guide given by the owner of the airbnb and i actually had to research further to understand exactly how to get to the airbnb.

Thanks to google map, i knew exactly where to go but there's a problem. There's a construction up the hill and this large vehicle was blocking the small road. We had to wait for it to reverse before our car can drive up!

The materials that were unloaded.

Clear way to the airbnb which was at the end of the road. Want to know how it looks like and whether i enjoyed the stay better than the one at furano? Click here!

Dumped our luggage and drove out again to explore Otaru; again, a family in yutaka! Do note that parking was expensive and the hourly rate i paid for during peak hours was 300 yen (slightly less than S$4)!

Display of three large stuffed teddy bears; i didn't take a closer look and am unsure if this was for the toy store or the left or the Otaru music box museum on the right.

Every tourist to Otaru would visit to the music box museum and it's an injustice if i were to skip it! There were so many music boxes to choose from as a gift although the price was a bit hard to swallow.

We should have allocated more time to shop at the pretty Sakaimachi Street that's lined with eateries, glass shops (with items like the glass pens), museums etc! Check out here for more pictures of the signature street in Otaru.

No time but we die die had to try the double fromage cheesecake from LeTAO. Back then, i wanted too as i can then do a comparison with Furano Delice.

Continuing our way along Sakaimachi Street!

A light ceremony, i presume as i don't read Japanese and couldn't understand the content of the publicity poster. Another event worth noting was the wind chimes display! For the pictures, visit here.

Running stream with strings of wind chimes crossing it! The cool weather made it extremely comfortable to walk even though as night beckoned, the temperature also started dropping.

Wanted to try this tendon outfit at Otaru Denuki Koji but strange not to have any seafood in Otaru right!? Let's go for a seafood dinner instead!

Before dinner and before sunset, let's dedicate some time for Otaru's icon; the Otaru Canal! Frankly, it's a matter of visiting just for the sake of visiting...

Otaru Unga Syokudo (小樽運河食堂) - we initially hoped to try the crab buffet in one of the eateries but like most Singaporeans, the pretty empty restaurant gave us a bad vibe and we decided to pass it.

Almost went in but i think the menu was pretty pricey; Alex was on a tight budget and he never likes to pay for expensive food.

My dinner - Bluefin Tuna Five Nigiri at Sushi Zammai Japanese Restaurant

As usual, i am a fast eater and completed the meal when the rest were only about halfway through. Since i am no time waster, i suggested collecting the car first and decided to cut across the now-quiet

Compared to the bustle in the daytime, the place was dead quiet. Nevertheless, there's still a romantic atmosphere hanging in the air.

Picked up my travel mates and guess where we went? To the convenience store again to stock up on snacks and drinks!

I don't like gummies and the ones from the above packs were the only exceptions! They can be found in some petrol kiosks in Singapore although price wise, the cheapest that i found cost only S$1 a pack.

Too shagged to park the car in another location and decided to take an empty slot next to the ONE lot assigned by the airbnb. While reversing, the car headlights shone onto a black stuff; turned out it was a humongous spider!

Yuen Fatt Biscuit Confectionery (源發餅家) & Its Unique Shanghai Mooncake @ Kluang [Johor, Malaysia]

$

Our fingers were crossed when we stepped into Yuen Fatt Biscuit; just ten minutes ago, we were at another famous Kluang confectionery (Tong Huat) and its signature offerings were all sold out!

Left of the shop where all the "biscuits" were; note the Chinese word for biscuits and pastries is the same and used interchangeably here in Asia.

Right side consisted of items not from the kitchen of the bakery like 3-in-1 coffee, instant noodles, sauces and even packaged herbs and spices mixes to cook bak kut teh, tea leaves eggs etc.

Strangely, there's a fridge where you can find western-style confectionery too (like Swiss rolls) and that's rather uncommon for most traditional Chinese bakeries.

I am not exactly what you call a traditionalist and prefer to let my taste buds make the eventual decision. As we would be having dinner at Star restaurant soon, i had to give up my intention to try their mini cheese cake (original)!

Been a while since i last seen such paper packaging for Chinese pastries; it was the norm when i was a kid! Tau sar piah is actually the thing everyone will buy at Tong Huat and since we didn't have the luck; it's revenge time at Yuen Fatt!

Didn't know whether to choose sweet or salty? Sample them!

Picture taken at my office where my fellow colleagues and i unravelled the precious pieces of round shaped tau sar piah from its paper packaging.

5 pieces in a roll that cost RM 3.40 (about S$3); each was blessed with generous amount of filling and the salty ones were noticeably better than the sweet ones. My sister loved it so much; i heard she finished a roll in one seating!

Don't like tau sar peah? There's heong piah too! Actually, i am quite lost on the Malaysian terminology for Chinese pastries as Singapore might use another term; for example, heong piah and beh teh saw.

Their unusual shape was bound to attract attention yet it didn't create a big hooha for visitors to Yuen Fatt as they should be fully aware that these unique Shanghai mooncakes (yes, they are mooncakes) were the most popular item in the confectionery!

Lotus paste, pandan with salted yolk and lotus with salted yolk; i honestly didn't know how to differentiate them apart aside from the pandan which was green. Guess you can draw references to a lot of things from the shape and i am not going to tell you what my initial thought was as that "thing" wasn't appealing.

Unsure what was good and i got one lotus paste, one pandan with salted yolk and one black bean paste with salted yolk! Funny that i am buying mooncakes when i actually know how to make quite a good one!

Anyway, these were handcrafted with no preservative and can be kept a maximum of 3 days (a week if you refrigerate them). The skin was pretty thick but the filling wasn't as sweet as the typical mooncakes we have; i would prefer some toasted melon seeds within the paste though. So, which was the best tasting? General consensus points towards the pandan mooncake with salted yolk!

There's no way I can stomach another food session immediately after a pretty heavy dinner at star restaurant; at least not at my age!

The meal must be partially digested first before we were to stress the tummy further!  Since walking will aid in digestion, I indicated a visit to the biggest shopping center in Kluang, the heart of Johor

Boasting wide passageways and over 160 retail and dining outlets, Kluang Mall is listed on TripAdvisor as the #5 thing to do in Kluang

Singapore has a lot of shopping centers and it's a must to manage our expectations for a mall in a small Malaysian town.

To sum it up, it wouldn't be the classy malls you see along Orchard Road with fancy designs and fixtures that made you ooh and ahh; the built-in 2008 Kluang Mall had a more practical design and what's more important would be the tenant mix.

As the three of us have different things to look out for, we decided to split up and meet at a pre-determined location around 90 minutes later.

Mascots; one of which was the character of Sun Wukong, the naughty yet terribly powerful monkey in Journey to the West! I think mascots do appeal to many shoppers, especially the children!

There was another guy in front; from far, it looked like he was sitting on top of a robotic animal that was ferrying him obediently from one point to another. On a closer look, it was merely a costume and the hind legs of the "animal" were, in fact, the legs of the boy!

Entered the "brands outlet" as I was on the lookout for cheap boxers! The ones in Singapore are freakish expensive and I didn't think the quality was worth the price. Personally, there's only one brand that I feel has the best quality; Burberry which cost S$120 now (in the past, it was less than S$50 a pair).

No boxers but my eyes lighted up at the sign; RM50 for 3 pieces of basic tees! Tried out a few pieces and got 3 pieces in one go. Saw sleeveless tees for the same price and grabbed those too! Darn, i am such an impulsive shopper!

Optical illusion for those going to the washrooms! This was actually a publicity for the street art in Kluang. Now that the mural arts in Penang have gained so much popularity, many places in Malaysia (even Singapore) have also started doing the same to boost tourism.

Cars for sale in the shopping mall; key question, how did they manage to get it in?! And I doubt the tiles can withstand the weight of the cars.

Yubiso; the concept was similar to Miniso which I thought was a smaller scale of Daiso. The key difference would be the pricing as everything in Daiso is sold at a specific price while the ones for Yubiso and Miniso vary.

A new brand for handphone known as Vivo; I have never heard about it. Technically I had but the vivo I know came with the extra word "city; as in Vivo City.

For a small town mall, it's amazing to see a two-floor H&M shop. There was even a Uniqlo clothing outlet where I spent around RM200  for three shirts!

Kenny Rogers and Baskin Robbins; uninterested to find out more about the dining establishments as I was still stuffed with the delicious food from star restaurant! For the list of food outlets at Kluang Mall, click here

A dedicated zone for the animal rides! Even though I had paid for a few sessions for the nephew and niece when they were younger, I always feel very apologetic whenever we blocked someone's way, especially along a narrow passage! Hence, such dedicated zone would address the problem.

There was an arcade for kids too!

More things for kids; the Kids Play Zone (Sea World)! With kids being so pampered nowadays, it's no wonder that shopping malls are targeting the kids and hope that the kids would 'persuade' their parents to drop by the shopping center.

The word "persuade" can include throwing a tantrum.

To be the largest shopping center, two specific shops are required; a cinema and also a supermarket! In the case of Kluang Mall, it has a MBO cinema, bowling alleys and instead of a supermarket, there's a Pacific Hypermarket!

Central atrium near the main entrance featured a stage for their "Christmas in Space" theme for the upcoming festival. Most shoppers were concentrated in this area even though I generally thought that the crowd was a bit thin on a Saturday evening.

Performances by the locals; they were pretty good and I was amazed by the enthusiasm of the crowd which we don't commonly see in Singapore. Maybe that's why the Malaysians can thrive so well in music and performing arts.
