Shikisai-No-Oka (四季彩の丘) - Panoramic Flower Fields! @ Biei [Near Furano in Hokkaido, Japan]

Farm Tomita isn't the only flower farm in Hokkaido and many guidebooks gave suggestions on other as-worthy flower fields, some of which were said to be better than the one that your tour agency would bring you to.

One strong contender would be Shikisai-No-Oka. Like you, i have no understanding on what the words mean although its kanji writing (四季彩の丘) did enlighten me a bit as it translates into the understandable mound of four colorful seasons!

From outside the boring, factory-like entrance, you would have caught the colorful splendor in the farm but let me draw your attention to the vending machines! Shouldn't they be under shelter?! What happens if it rains?

Want lunch? There was a restaurant and i have appended the menu above for your reference. For us, the tummies had already been filled with a great meal at Teppan Okonomiyaki Masaya and i am only looking forward to my first bite of Hokkaido ice cream

Now, there's no admission ticket to enter the flower field even though i did notice a collection box right in the middle of the walkway with a signage in Japanese. From what i gathered (from the Kanji writing), it's for the maintenance of the place and recommendation was 200 yen per person.

Needless to say, i didn't see anyone putting money into the box.

It made perfect economic sense for the operator to sell you pots of flowers! Do note that some countries have strict policies on the import of flora; hence, do check with your home country before you buy any!

Yes, i did see the nicely stacked haystacks that looked like a person. While researching the attraction, i came across quite a few pictures of it and i didn't realize there were in fact of them; one male, one female!

Waited here for my travel mates who needed to go to the washroom.

I decided to take a pee too just in case the tide were to get high while i am halfway exploring the flower farm. Saw this amusing notice in Chinese and Japanese that taught users on the correct usage of toilets in Japan; like close your door, throw the toilet paper in the toilet bowl, don't squat, remember to flush the toilet etc.

Ticket counter?! Please be assured that this wasn't a surprise move to get you to cough up money for entry to the flower fields. However, it's still a smart move to squeeze more money from visitors! Nothing wrong with that; it's just business and no one is pointing a knife at you.

Pity my group was quite stingy as we totally didn't see the point to take the tractor bus (500 yen per person for 1 round), buggies (500 yen for two persons for a one-kilometer circuit) and carts (2,500 yen for up to 5 persons for 15 minutes).

There's even an alpaca farm that would cost an adult 500 yen to enter. Frankly, i didn't know where the alpacas were kept and only saw on the map (to be shared later) that the farm was on the right, near the washroom.

Excited to see the flower fields said to be a real-life postcard guaranteed to draw your breath away?! p.s. above plot was undergoing rejuvenation i guess.

Amazing right?!

Total area was 15 hectares but how big is a hectare!? You know a typical 400-meter jogging track in a stadium? For better visualization, the area within the track is about 1 hectare; hence, you can imagine how expansive the flower fields were at Shikisai-No-Oka

A lot of visitors dropped by Hokkaido during summer to specially check out a type of flower! Want to guess what it is? Give you a hint; its scent is said to relax the mind and give you a better sleep.

The lavender fields!

Just a few photographs; they were not as vibrantly purplish as i thought they would be even though the aroma was still rather alluring! p.s. Alex said he didn't want his face on this blog after what happened in my Taiwan posting where many friends and family members said they saw him!

Never mind, i got a better "model"! From the numerous photographs, you would have assumed that visitors would have to trample the flowers in order to get a nice photograph of being surrounded by them.

It's frankly not as inconsiderate; the flowers were in "bushes" and there were paths that you can walk in to take photos that gave an illusion that you are literally amidst the flowers!

Not all kinds of flowers provided a "path".
The cosmos didn't have that option.

There were certain plots that didn't allow you to enter and these were demarcated accordingly with signs in various languages for better communication.

Guess idiots would simply be idiots. By the way, i am going to bombard you with tons of pictures as i am not well-verse in flowers and didn't know the scientific names or even the commonly-called names for most of them.

To put it more simply, i would have called the above lavender!

So did the flowers and the breathtaking scenery captivate you? It was such a pretty sight in front of me; i literally shot hundred over photographs with nuanced differences! Had a hard time deciding which one i should put up here.

Someone was flying a drone and i knew it was prohibited as there were quite a few signs declaring a no-drone policy and i am so attuned to the signs for no photography, no cameras etc.

It's along the route of the tractor bus and i saw the driver telling the guy to stop flying it. Think there's a communication problem as one simply couldn't understand the other!

Tractor uncle driver; steady woah!

Shikisai-No-Oka wasn't very crowded and i figured it was because we arrived at almost close to their closing time with just only about 90 minutes to go.

Rather good timing with plenty of space for your carts. Did i regret getting a cart? To a certain extent i was since it would result in so much lesser walking! Oh well, it would be a better "investment" if i was travelling with my parents.

Furthermore, i am more likely to stop at every few meters to shot a few photographs and that would definitely eat into the limited timing given for the rental of the cart.

Asshole decided to finally show his face as he figured it would be impossible not to have his face plastered in the postings relating to our first visit in Japan!

Since we were on top of the hill, the landscape in front of us stretched beyond what the camera can capture and there were patches where basic greenery took precedence over the colourful flowers.

I am a huge fan of fairy tales and whenever the story talks about beds and beds of flowers, i always wonder how they would look like in real life. My childhood question got an answer at Shikisai-No-Oka!

Don't you think it was an accurate depiction?!

You know what i really want to do? To roll along the beds of flowers and see if they were as soft as they were said to be in the fairy tales! Of course i didn't do that; can just imagine the frowns upon the faces of local Japanese....

Not everything was picture perfect even though i would have seen nothing wrong with a broken sunflower on the ground. The harsh reality of life is that nothing's ever perfect.

Last look of the fields as we were thoroughly exhausted given it was our first day in Hokkaido and we had to endure a few hours of drive just to get to this part of Hokkaido.

Map of 四季彩の丘 and the type of flowers you would be able to see in the various months from May till October! To be honest with you, i would love to return again sometime in October to catch the flowers and also enjoy the autumn season in Hokkaido

What should we do before exiting the attraction?! Shopping time and you can find loads of souvenirs to buy and haul them back home! As it was our first day, we were rather protective of our expenses and i didn't buy much.

You can find flowers seeds, bookmarks (who use them nowadays?) and the ever-common postcards.

With the proliferation of phone cameras that have the ability to shoot pretty good pictures, i believe the demand for postcards has dropped drastically. In addition, not many people go through snail mail anymore and you can pull equally nice photographs from the web.

Lavender products continued to draw a good demand and even i was tempted to get a lavender pillow so that i can have better sleep at night! Pity i didn't have sufficient luggage space. :(

Fancy bear meat in a can? I should have gotten one for the Great Kon!

As i had mentioned countless times in this blog, such fresh produce would not go unnoticed if my mom was with me. She would likely deliberate for a moment and fly home with a head of cabbage.

My tour mates were just more interested in eating and Alex got a potato croquette which wasn't spectacular in my opinion. To be fair, i am not much of a potato person.

Get your stamp of visit before you leave!

Takezo Ramen - Choose from White, Black, Red & Super Spicy Broth @ Yishun's Northpoint [Singapore]

While it was Akimitsu (秋光) Signature Tendon that caught my attention, i did notice a sister ramen restaurant connected to Akimitsu that i knew i would try out very soon given the fact that my parents and i live in Yishun!

My prophecy came true less than a month later and even though i am familiar with Japanese ramen in general, i was in dilemma when i was passed the menu with the front page as above. There were four broths to choose from; white (original pork bone), black (garlic), red (spicy) and extra spicy (self explanatory).

It would have been easier if there's one ramen attached to one broth but no, it's way more complicated as you can choose from seven types of ramen! That means a total of 28 permutations and knowing how undecided i can be, i literally just choose the three types of ramen i felt appeared to be the most visually appealing on the menu, in different broths!

Like Ajisen Ramen, you can upgrade the ramen into a set by paying S$3 extra for a small side dish and a cup of houji tea (cold / hot). Anyway, i don't commonly see the notice about food allergens; must be all the talk in the mainstream media about life-threatening food allergies.

Chijimi (Side Dish) - literally scallion pancake with a taste similar to the local style prawn crackers; albeit with vegetables instead of prawns. If you ask me, i would definitely opt for prawn crackers

Cold Tofu (Side Dish) - Nice and refreshing; i think most people would know this is darn easy to make as you can readily purchase the tofu from the supermarket. For the sauce, just buy a bottle of kewpie's roasted sesame dressing!

Edamame (Side Dish) - well, normal and we are now done with the side dishes that came with the ramen with a little top-up. Coming to the ramen next!

Pork Shabu Ramen (White) - in original pork bone broth, this had a comfortable flavour that's light at first sip and intensified right after. There's a sweetness that i personally enjoyed although my companion having the ramen commented it was rather heavy towards the end with MSG being blamed as the culprit.

At S$9.90 (ala-carte), this was the cheapest ramen on the menu and even though the pieces of sliced pork were pretty nice; they were not amazing enough to wow us.

Yakibuta Ramen (Red) - mom's spicy ramen was, simply put, just chilli oil added to the soup. Aside from the lack of "sincerity" of a full blown amalgamation of spiciness and flavourfulness, we were also displeased with the tough and chunky yakibuta.

Cha Shu Ramen (Black) - this was mine and hence, deserved to be reviewed last. As usual, i took a customary sip before i mixed up everything; it was appetizing with a whiff of garlic that wasn't overbearing (pro and con depending on individuals).

I forgot to take pictures of the noodles; they were of the optimal hardness (neither hard or soft) and i loved the fact that the noodle portion was really little! To be fair, the amount would not satisfy a carbohydrate monster!

The cha shu was impressive; soft to the extent of literal melty!

In no time, i cleaned up the entire bowl! Frankly, if i were to visit in the future, i would go for Cha Shu Ramen in white (original pork bone) broth.

Day Three of My 4 Days, 3 Nights Itinerary to Bali - The Island of the Gods @ Indonesia

The day before was just too packed for me and i slept till about 8am before crawling out of bed to prepare my waterproof camera (Olympus TG-3) for the exciting day ahead of us! Battery was fully charged this time; a lesson well learnt from the Bintan trip i made earlier in April this year.

A new driver today as i wasn't exactly happy with the service the day before; i got the contact from TripAdvisor and told the person exactly where i wanted to go; snorkeling, sea-sports activities, Uluwatu temple and sunset at Tanah Lot temple.

Keeping my fingers crossed as i am travelling with five other travel mates and i would be extremely guilty if things were not what they seemed to be.

Drove past one of the city temples; by this day, i am already quite jaded with the religious displays in Bali and unlike some of my friends, i didn't get affected by the spiritualism that they felt so strongly in their visits to the island.

On our way to Nusa Dua where we can get to snorkel and partake in sea-sports activities! I honestly didn't do much research before the trip and literally went with the recommendation suggested by the driver over whatsapp.

Paid the toll fee to use the highway that would cut our journey time to Nusa Dua, which was on the southern part of Bali, southward of Kuta, where we stayed at (i.e. Grand Istana Rama Hotel).

Loving the blue sky as the rain had dampened our mood on day two. Furthermore, any activity in relation to the sea would be less risky and stand a higher chance of taking place if weather is good.

City temple or house temple?

Driver's recommendation - Bali Apollo Dive & Water Sports; as mentioned earlier, my research was minimal and although i had the impression that there would be a spot for us to snorkel freely using our easybreath masks; the truth was snorkeling was chargeable as you have to be boated over to another location.

For pricing and review of Bali Apollo Dive & Water Sports, click here. I can only blame myself for not checking further and thanks to Alex's colleagues; we managed to bargain down the price of the activities. We eventually skipped snorkeling and opted for parasailing. What's the best thing that happened? Our lunch at the sports centre where you can read more here

There was a funny moment too! I was changing to my board shorts in Bali Apollo Dive & Water Sports' changing room and i noticed something stuck to the door hanger. .

On closer look, i think it's a sanitary pad!
Rest assured, it wasn't stained.

Our craziest travel mate who always triggers tons of laughter whenever we are together! Lora, i still remember the offer you made; for us to visit your hometown in Philippines!

Near a local university, i guess.

Joker cell - sounds like a prison for Batman's nemesis! And did you see that kampong chicken with its slim body and thin legs?!

Scenes along the driving journey to Uluwatu Temple

Kopi luwak plantations were practically everywhere in Bali, except for maybe the cities! Want to know what to expect in a typical plantation? Click the link here.

My visit to Uluwatu Temple; in summary, an extremely beautiful place that's mostly due to the spectacular stretch of cliff bordering the sea! Want to see more photos? Click here

Rain started pelting down on us when we reached the edge of the cliff at Uluwatu Temple and it continued even when we exited the place! Due to the weather, i am not that hopeful that we would catch the sunset at Tanah Lot.

Seriously, semen as part of a company name?

Super cool - a real aeroplane that's parked beside a busy road! According to the driver, it was said to be a restaurant but it either didn't materialise or the establishment had closed for good. Nevertheless, how did they even move the aeroplane to a spot that's already pretty built up with houses and roads!?

Angel on a surfing board; it's in front of this shop known as Surfer's Paradise which seemed to be a factory outlet for reputable beachwear brands like ripcurl, quicksilver, oakley etc.

Another towering statue - at this point, we were about 90 minutes on the road and it's impossible for us to get to Tanah Lot in just 30 minutes to catch the sunset when there's no relief to the jam in front of us!

Hence, we requested the driver to send us to Seminyak so that we can meet up for dinner with the rest of our travel mates! Like Kuta, Seminyak is a touristy place even though it's more hippy with a laid back chill in the atmosphere.

Arrival at our destination.

Dinner was at Potato Head Beach Club Restaurant - Nice ambience with just one major issue; food wasn't fantastic! Someone commented that the lunch we had at lunch at Bali Apollo Dive & Water Sports was way better!

Given the jams along the road at that time, i opted to walk from Potato Head Beach Club to Grand Istana Rama Hotel and the rest of my travel mates gamely joined me! According to Google Map, it would take us about 50 minutes to walk and if we take a cab, it's only 5 minutes shorter.

It's an interesting walk as Bali's streets were hugely confusing and Google Map, in case you are unaware, might not be updated if there's any new development.

We knew because it brought us to this area known as C151 Smart Villas that's right smack on the route that we had to cut through! Nice villas by the way and if you wish, you can book one for about S$500 a night.

Retraced our route and finally got onto another road that's reflected on the google map. Walked past a few plots of padi fields which would likely be gone in a few more years when the owner realises it would be more profitable to build a few villas that cater to tourists instead.

At this point, we were 40 minutes into our walk yet, the journey back to the hotel was barely halfway through! I was apologetic towards my companions and suggested taking the cab instead as everyone had an expression that's plain exhaustion!

Back at Grand Istana Rama Hotel in about 25 minutes and i got out in a jiffy as i needed to check out the supermarket at Beachwalk shopping center.

Reason being i wanted to compare prices of souvenirs! A seasoned traveller would known it's sometimes much cheaper to get your souvenirs in a supermarket. And to know the actual fixed pricing of the souvenirs also means you have the upper hand in bargaining with shops that don't practice fixed price for their products!

Sari Club Memorial - Remembering the 2002 Bali Bombings

I still remember the breaking news on television; the bombings on the vacation island of Bali that were so much closer to home. 15 years have passed and i found myself at the memorial that's built on the site of the destroyed Sari Club.

202 people from over 20 countries died from the twin-bomb attacks orchestrated by Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) and it's sad that the fight against religious extremism never stops despite efforts around the world.

There's no one i know on the victim list but the sensitive soul in me would be able to empathise with the family members who have to manage the death of their loved ones who were simply enjoying themselves. Can you imagine the pain and the heartbreak?

We never could if we have never experienced it; hence, i don't understand why some tourists can take photos in front of the memorial and smile gleefully at the camera. Insensitive max.

Ear Wax Removal - The Western Medical Way

$

Like many Asians in Singapore, the removal of ear wax can be a weekly affair via a conventional ear picker and although they can be made from various materials; my favorite is the bronze type as seen in the above picture.

However, the device to remove hard and encased ear wax is way more intimidating and i only found out about it when my dad had to undergo the treatment recently! According to my dad, he has never picked his ear before and that, according to the doctors, should be way as we should never pick our ears!

OMG - it's like a huge needle being pushed into the ear! To facilitate the removal, my dad had to soften the ear wax (using some medicated liquid) for around three days before the D day.

The device was already filled up with water and its purpose was to pump the water into the ear to dislodge the stubborn ear wax. I was all wide eyed as my dad's ear became a mini-waterfall.

A relatively fast, painless process and i am happy knowing my dad can hear clearer now! p.s. didn't take a clearer picture of the ear wax as the doctor immediately poured the entire content down the sink. :( Sad.

The Legendary Ramen Master (王师傅) - Chiong for the Xiaolongbao! @ Northpoint Shopping Centre in Yishun [Singapore]

$

0
Clarification is required before you read further as many would have assumed the legendary ramen i am referring to in the subject is Japanese ramen; it's actually Chinese ramen which isn't broth based.

To say the truth, i personally prefer Japanese ramen over Chinese ramen as the former has more ingredients and usually features a way more intensive flavor due to the soup (could also mean it could be MSG laden).

Nevertheless, i was drawn to the above poster which spoke of a legendary rainbow ramen! It didn't escape me that there were only three basic colors (rainbow has seven) although they represent three healthy ingredients that were added to the flour; pumpkin, spinach and carrot!

Touted as a must-try, it's easier for me to persuade my mom to give it a try since she has always believed in eating healthily.

It's also easier to convince her on the hygiene level when the dining establishment had an open kitchen concept that looked out into the common passage; similar to Din Tai Fung

Photographs taken for the purpose of this posting were from my second visit. Hence, i have a better idea of what to order given the initial experience and i am also ordering more as my second visit comprised of a much larger group.

Signature Pickled Vegetables - spiciness is subjective as i found the supposedly mild spiciness to be too spicy for my liking and tasted more like kimchi without the sweetness found in Chinese pickled vegetables.

Fragrant Crispy Fried Beancurd - looking like fried dumplings / wanton from the menu, the main reason why i got it was because there was a "chef recommended" sign next to it.

It failed as a dumpling as the texture of the filling was too soft and it didn't succeed as a fried beancurd as the tofu was too weak in holding the ingredients together; a plain old beancurd (tau kwa) would taste better deep fried.

Lala Soup - i missed this out on my first visit as the waiter said i should try it when i was paying for my meal! Hence, i specially ordered this even though it wasn't even on the menu.

Obviously, i was expecting the soup to be darn flavorful but sadly, it just tasted heavy of coriander with a hint of Chinese wine. Thankfully, the lalas were meaty and had an extremely nice, sweet taste without the fishiness i sometimes encountered in lala.

Spicy Braised Pork Ramen - i mentioned earlier that healthy ingredients were added to the flour and even though the ramen in the menu for the dish was the plain whitish ramen, my sister opted for spinach ramen and it was served green like pieces of vegetables!

Visually appealing, i thought i already felt healthier just by looking at it! The ramen were flat like ban mian and honestly quite tasty with an appetising spiciness that's much more manageable than the pickled vegetables.

Golden Egg Fried Rice with Prawns - too dry and the wok hei only surrounded the dish without having it infused inot the rice; hence, resulting in a plate of fried rice that lacked the addictive flavor common in tze-char stalls.

Legendary Rainbow Ramen - for all the novelty (just the word rainbow is enough to raise a few eyebrows) and the way it was served, the expectation for this dish was high.

Mixed them all up (including the braised abalone) and you would notice they didn't generate much of a wow factor. Taste wise, it was more like sheng mian (生面) which doesn't rank high in the many types of noodles i have in my whole life. Spicy braised pork ramen was fact better tasting.

Steamed Dumplings (Original) - actually, the main reason for my return visit was because of the xiaolongbao at 王师傅 and you know what the interesting thing is? It didn't bear the "chef recommended" logo.

Whatever the case, it has been quite a while since i last had such great xiao long bao. The meat juice encased within each dumpling was generously rich and sweet; to the extent that i would want to eat it again and again! Pity there were only eight in one serving!

Of course the best way was to have it with vinegar and shredded ginger!

Steamed Scallop Dumplings - featuring the same delicious juice, the pieces of scallop meat added into the pork overshadowed the original sweetness. Therefore, if you ask me, the original was definitely the one you should order.

Alex has a habit whenever he travels overseas and in my opinion, it's a darn irritating one as i often can't stay still for extended period of time (except for massages); not when i should be checking out the foreign country!

What does he like to do? He totally enjoys having a haircut when he is out of Singapore! I am someone who is extremely particular over who manages my hair as i don't wax / gel and the hairdresser would usually cut it too short or just give it a light trim.

Never mind the language barrier since his main objective is usually to have a clean cut that can be easily styled using wax and gel. While he was getting ready, i was just sitting on the sofa and playing my candy crush; an utter waste of my time!

Anyway, the concept of the barbershop was like a throwback to the retro 60 / 70s and this retro 'uprising' was already in place in places like Bangkok. Bet many millennials would not know how a cassette tape looks like.

30 minutes were wasted just like that! Oh well, compromises are required whenever we travel with others and it's a small sacrifice given that Alex is always the designated model in my photos.

Day 0 of The 8 Days, 7 Nights (Mostly Self-Drive) Summer Trip in Hokkaido [Japan]: Comprising Furano, Otaru, Lake Toya, Noboribetsu & Sapporo!

$
0
0

Rest assured, day 0 would be relatively picture-light as i can't foresee there's anything i could add since all my air trips from Singapore start from the world famous Changi International Airport

Nowadays, i don't even feel the motivation to shop and explore!

Most of the times, i would find a quiet spot, get an expensive cup of local coffee and then proceed to do some photo-editing on my laptop for the many photos that have yet to be uploaded to this blog. Maybe things would be different if the plane were to depart from the newer terminals.

Loving the spaciousness of the passageway that branches off to the individual gates for departing planes. Was i excited? Sure am as it's my first trip to the land of the rising sun

Boarded the Boeing 777-300 plane of Thai Airways, which was celebrating its 57th anniversary! As some of you are aware, my air ticket to Sapporo was incredibly cheap and i am still hoping for the same good deal this period so that i can revisit Japan again next year.

Dinner - Thai fish with rice that came with cucumber salad with tuna. Former was not bad even though i am more impressed with the serving of the appetizing veggies on the side; so much so that i stole Alex's bread so that i can slather said veggie on it before wolfing it down my throat!

Looked like the mainland of Thailand - just in case you are unaware, we would be transiting at Bangkok before moving to Hokkaido

Arrived at the Land of Smiles

Decoration literally filled with various types of orchids.

The passage leading to the transfer counter was on the other side of Suvarnabhumi Airport and even though i didn't have to haul along my large luggage, it's still a bloody long walk!

Tempted to try the exclusive ride until i came to realize its exclusivity came at a price; 1,070 Thai bahts which would be more expensive than a typical taxi ride from the airport to downtown Bangkok!

Walking would be cheaper, and healthier.

Arrival at the transfer counter on the upper level where we had to show our boarding passes and also to go through a round of security checks which i thought was redundant. Oh well, we shall abide by the rules and regulations in a foreign country.

Tsk tsk tsk, can see all the accumulated dust! Those with OCD would likely ask for a vacuum cleaner so that he/ she can suck everything up!

Regretted going into the transit area so early as there's practically nothing to do and the juice on my phone was running low....

Happiness enveloped me when i saw a charging station but maybe there were too many people attempting the same thing as I; the charging speed couldn't match with my web-surfing speed!

Have to take the shuttle bus as the aeroplane we would be taking wasn't connected to an aero-bridge. Likely didn't manage to get a slot since Suvarnabhumi Airport was said to have reached its maximum passenger capacity and is in serious need for expansion.

Boarded the humongous Boeing 747-400. I am actually not well versed with the differences between the planes but i guess size is always a good comparative measure.

Movie watching time! Not really as it was already past midnight and being the victim of a car accident when i am self driving in a foreign country; i am aware that ample sleep is necessary if i am to self drive the next day!

And i dislike in-flight earphones where i had to put on the foam cushion pads myself as i have the tendency to tear them.. my fault, none from the airline.

Hm.... when would a blanket be unsuitable for airplane use?

One good thing about full service airlines; the amenities in the washroom which would be beneficial for those on overnight flights.

Not about the toilet paper which would be provided even on budget airlines.

I am looking for the oral care set as i am anal in having my teeth brushed before i sleep! Of course i have my own toothbrush and toothpaste but they would be in the checked-in luggage. Flossing is a must though and i brought along a compact box of dental floss in my carryon bag.

Is that the compartment for facial tissue or toilet seat cover?

Late night snack (crab stick mayo sandwich) was given when i was back in my seat! Not one to crave for late-night supper and especially not when i had brushed and flossed my teeth; i decided to keep it aside.

Rise and shine to find that the sky had already lighted up before 6 am! Note for those who would like to travel to Hokkaido in summer; the sun rises at 4 am and do get a room with thick curtains if you are the kind who couldn't go back to sleep when it's bright outside.

Breakfast was served shortly after; it's udon with prawns and i once again affirmed my dislike for udon! The portion of cut fruits was pretty sweet though.

Fortunately, i still had the sandwich which was delish; to the extent that i took over Alex's one too as he preferred the udon.

Before landing, do remember to fill up the disembarkation card and the custom declaration form! Just a piece of advice - please put in the full address of the local accommodation; failing which you would be asked to fill up in a separate counter.

Rum & Raisin Frappe at Point Cafe in Indomaret Ground Zero Convenience Store behind Sari Club Memorial @ Legian [Bali, Indonesia]

While paying my respects at the sari club memorial which was built as a reminder for those who perished in the 2002 Bali bombings, I was suddenly taken by an immense urge to release the pee in my bladder!

Boy was I ecstatic to see a sign right behind the memorial that indicated available washrooms on the second floor of a Indomaret convenience store!

It was Alex's turn after I am done with my "release" and I took the opportunity to linger around the store. Nothing much for me to buy although I did notice a cafe that was stationed within the store.

Coffee to the Point - now, I don't really go for coffee as my preference has always been the local Singaporean / Malaysian style of coffee with condensed milk. However, I am always keen for ice blended coffee, especially if the weather is hot!

Would have opted for my usual caramel frappe if not for the notice and pull up banner publicizing a rum & raisin frappe! I love rum and raisin ice cream and wondered if this would be as good as the ice cream version.

Let's not waste time while waiting for the frappe; ample seating both indoor and outdoor! It's also a WiFi zone (didn't try it as I was on StarHub Data Travel) and there are power points for you to charge your mobile devices.

Ready and couldn't wait to try it!

Took a deep, long sip and I must admit it tasted as good as rum and raisin ice cream in blended, drinkable form and featured the little bites of raisins! Refreshing and you know what's the best thing? It cost only 15,000 rupiahs (about S$1.50) after a 50% discount!

Thunder Tea Rice (擂茶饭) @ Tea Square (茶茶坊) opposite OG in Bugis [Singapore]

Colleagues who frequently have lunch with me would realize i am more a meat and deep-fried food person and things like vegetables often don't get to appear on my plate. There were exceptions though; like the recent strange craving for thunder tea rice!

This particular eatery at Bugis, near the famous Kwan Im temple, was on my radar for quite some time and i finally got try it with my elder sister after a karaoke session at Manekineko in Bugis Plus!

Joyce ordered and paid for the meal while i was taking out my camera for the necessary photo-taking for the purpose of this blog! And before i knew it, the serving of thunder tea rice, with a bowl of tea, was placed in front of me.

Unlike the thunder tea rice i had at Toa Payoh, i did notice a piece of tofu-like stuff in the middle of the bowl and since it's in the way for me to mix up the healthy greenies in the bowl; i took a bite. That stuff was actually preserved radish (chai-po) omelette and it's seriously the best i ever have; oily, fluffy and darn flavorful! Good to go with plain porridge!

What i didn't know then was that the omelette was a separate top up from the regular thunder tea rice; not that expensive at only S$1 a piece but in my opinion, it was a necessary addition.

As a whole, the thunder tea rice was pretty good with a taste that didn't overwhelm; somewhat like a home-cooked meal that's on the bland side yet healthy with vegetables, tofu, nuts and a touch of bitterness from the tea.

I would definitely draw comparison with the Hakka thunder tea rice at Toa Payoh's HDB Hub and while this version at Tea Square didn't impress me with their taste, its simple chai-po omelette was simply unforgettable and the main reason i managed to clean up the entire bowl of content!

Vegetarian thunder tea rice is available on the first and fifteenth of the lunar month. Weirdly, i thought my order was vegetarian as i didn't notice any meat product and the day i visited definitely didn't fall under the aforementioned two days.

There's a separate counter for those who required more food; you can find glutinous rice, pumpkin kueh, yam kueh, ang ku kueh, muah chee and steamed egg cake. I would give it a try the next time i dropped by!

Tanah Lot Barbecued Corn @ Bali [Indonesia]

The amount of photos i had for Tanah Lot temple at Bali numbers close to 200 and breaking them apart into mini-postings can be extremely helpful for me as my brain couldn't process that many pictures in one single post!

Hence, for today, i am going to talk about the barbecued corn i found at this hardly prominent street side stall at the temple compound. p.s. Tanah Lot is more than just a religious abode; a rather large area was zoned for commercial uses with a number of shopping streets.

BBQ corn came in four flavours - sweet, chilli, salt and butter. Being unadventurous Singaporeans, we opted for the standard butter and it was barbecued nicely without being overly charred as in some cases i had encountered.

Alex took the first bite as he was the one feeling famished. In addition, he enjoys corn that was grilled, barbecued or steamed and professes to be the corn connoisseur.

It was good; the corn kernels came off easily and the bite was crunchy with a light buttery aroma. We tried to salvage as much as we could but it's obvious both of us were craving for more.

By that time, we had already ventured towards another shopping street and it's with excitement (Alex, not me) that we found another stall selling BBQ corn! Of course we had to purchase another one; sadly, it wasn't as nice. :(

Downtown Line 3 Open House - Checking Out Singapore's Latest Subway Extension with the Kids! #DTL3OpenHouse

$

The open house for downtown line 3 was last week and i am sorry for this delayed post; it's so late that Singapore's latest subway extension is actually having its official opening today!

Nevertheless, better late than never and with so many photographs of the kids, it's a waste if i am going to just save them in my hard disk. So, what's the reason for me to attend the open house when i abhor crowds?

Love; not so much love for Singapore's train system as i have been frustratingly disappointed with it for the past few years and this can be seen from my occasional instagram posting whenever i am faced with yet again another train delay.

Rather, i went because of my love for my niece and nephew as Jerald loves trains, the stations etc and you know how fast kids grow; i am not going to miss out on their childhood.

I know, i know, i am such a great uncle! To be fair, my sister (their auntie), joined us too! Start of the journey was Fort Canning station; the first on the new extension that ends at Expo.

Train wasn't as crowded as expected but we must keep in mind that Fort Canning doesn't have much of a residential population and throngs of people would be expected towards the built-up towns like Bedok etc.

Our little boy in the train carriage! All smiles obviously as trains are his kind of thing whereas commoners like i look at trains as a mode of public transportation. Anyway, there were complaints of train delays on the social media although i thought it wasn't as bad as the ones i encountered on my way to work!

We dropped at orange-colored themed Bencoolen station; which was the deepest MRT station ever built in Singapore at 43 meters underground.

Despite the award (of being the deepest MRT station), i was there simply because my younger sister would be meeting us there.

Jovyn having a fun time with the artwork. Maybe i can rent her out as a model or something as she is always so full of expression. Pity she is a bit shy in front of strangers; just like her uncle.

From top to the floor of Bencoolen station. I didn't see any stairs even though that's a problem for the working population as precious time would be wasted with just a few space hoggers blocking the escalators.

Oh yes, forgot to mention the train tunnels! I don't often take downtown line and even if i do, i am seldom at the head of the train. Hence, i didn't know the interior of the tunnel was shimmering like diamond when the train drove along the track!

Despite the existence of cold concrete walls, it almost felt like a tunnel after death; one that would light up as you pass by and eventually brighten up when you reach your "station".

Having the lights coming from the trains actually save money from installing lights in the tunnels as in the case of Circle Line. Furthermore, it's eco-friendly yet pretty.

Traffic lights in play even though Downtown Line, like Circle Line and Northeast Line, is entirely driverless with an automated system that moves the trains.

Tampines Station was way more crowded and maybe because it was past lunchtime, many people were participating in the numerous games and activities for the open house.

I am guarded when it comes to games and activities as it often means time would be wasted unnecessarily! Thankfully, the kids didn't insist on taking the booklet to get a stamp at every station in order to redeem a prize at the end. Taking photos would be the best!

In the train from Tampines to Expo; so many passengers! Okay, there's another selfish reason why i chose to embark the journey with the kids; i wanted to check out the Travel Malaysia Fair at Singapore Expo!

Expo station; the words on the wall seemed to refer to the different translations around the world for subway. Honestly, i thought there would be a lot more.

Art installation on the wall near the exit.

Smack yourself hard on the cheek if you don't know which station you are at. Haha. The wordings were so huge and contrasted with the bland, boring passageway.

We went back to Tampines station again as Jerald has identified a few keepsakes (limited editions hor) and i couldn't reject him as i had yet to purchase any present for his birthday in September

My damage; less than S$40 for a miniature downtown lego train and a keychain. Am secretly happy that the model train was sold out as it would have torn a hole in my pocket with a price tag of over S$120!

Whatever the case, i am most happy when the kids enjoy themselves!

With a clear view of the blue sky when i woke up from my slumber on Thai Air's Boeing 747-400 plane, i took it as a good omen for fantastic weather in the next few days; an essential condition for nice photos!

The fact that we were a few thousand feet in the air (with forming ice crystal on the glass) was lost on me apparently and even if i did remember, the plane still needed to fly about one hour plus to get to New Chitose airport.

Situation changed as the plane descended and you can read more on my posting for the "the eyes in the sky above New Chitose". Well, i am at least happy that it wasn't pouring cats and dogs.

No matter what, i was even more excited to have finally arrived at the Land of the Rising Sun; a country listed in my childhood's composition on the things i wish to do when i am an adult.

And do you know that i super love the cartoon "Doraemon" when i was young? It's double happiness to have the statue welcoming us when we reached the arrival hall! p.s. there's a doraemon waku waku sky park in the airport and you can check out the information here.

Friends, who had travelled to Japan, often heaped praises on the toilets and that's the first thing i do at the airport; check out the washrooms!

Super clean, to the extent i think i can eat in the toilets, and they were all equipped with electronic bidets (known as washlets to some)! In the 8 days i was in Hokkaido, i can count with one hand the number of toilets that don't have the electronic bidet.

Need data? Get data sim from the vending machines! 1.2 GB for 3,500 yen (about S$41) and 3.2 GB for 5,500 yen (about S$65). Too expensive? Can explore Starhub Data Travel which only cost me S$20 for 3 GB of data!

Next step - proceed to the information counter a floor below where we can register for the shuttle van that shall bring us to the car rental company that we had booked before the trip!

A flower galore along the streets; they were pretty common and you can read more about it at a separate posting here.

Let's now surround ourselves with Hokkaido's greenery as we drove to Furano! Unlike the winter season where snow can be an issue, driving in summer was quite a breeze.

Nevertheless, hazards still exist and you may click here for the hazards of driving in Hokkaido (in summer).

There were many tunnels!

I can take tons of selfies as Alex wasn't too comfortable to have been controlling the steering wheel, given my track record in South Korea; i.e. specifically the car accident at Jeju Island.

Stopped at Shimukappu rest station for a toilet break! Want to know more about the village? Click here; specialties of the village were said to be the melons and charcoal used for barbecuing.

Snacks were my main objective when i stepped into the store and i am mindful to only choose the kind Alex and i would eat; a box of wafer sticks is always a safe choice.

p.s. the speed limit at the countryside is usually about 40 kilometers an hour for good reasons; road bends are common and some can be rather sharp. In addition, there's always a risk of wild animals crossing the road.

These structures were placed as prevention for landslide?

For someone who lives in a tropical country, i cannot understand the purpose of the arrows; which i presume were to indicate the correct direction of traffic. However, Hokkaido is known for its thick, heavy snow and it wouldn't help if the arrows were drawn on the ground with the 100% likelihood that they would be hidden once winter arrives.

Rivers!

Our My driver - as there were six of us, we got two cars! Since Alex and i would be going back to Singapore later, we decided to pay for the rental of our car so that it's less confusing towards the end.

Point of the picture - to show you the mountains!

Out of the mountain road into a region that was filled with plot and plot of agricultural crops! The sky wasn't, thankfully, as gloomy as the scene that greeted us when we disembarked from the plane at New Chitose.

Sunflower field and melon farm! So tempted to visit them but our stomach was growling; it's already lunchtime and our first stop in Furano was lunch at a restaurant said to be ranked third in the area.

The main town in Furano! Relatively laid-back with a boring atmosphere which didn't help when the weather was also quite hot. Back in Singapore, this would mean switching on the air conditioning in my room and taking a nap!

Our friends arrived shortly after (they lost their way) and we had a great lunch at Teppan Okonomiyaki Masaya! Please click here for my review.

Exploring the town on foot as our travel companions were still enjoying their food; i am known as food inhaler at work as i tend to eat very fast. Anyway, here's a hair salon in furano with eye-popping prices; in Singapore, a student cut usually cost about 1,000 yen at neighbourhood salons.

Ginger cat that appeared pissed with my intrusion.

Honestly, it's a rather nice town to retire in; so long our North Korean friend doesn't fire any more missiles across Japan! p.s. that incident happens a few weeks after my return from Hokkaido.

One of the nicer houses i chanced upon on my short walking trip.

If i am ever back at Furano, i would make sure to dine at Torisei as i was instantly drawn by the delicious aroma generated by their kitchen, which was exactly the same as Tori Q, when i strolled past.

Spiderwebs everywhere!

A bakery that's located next to another one of the top ranked restaurants in Furano; Yuiga Doxon 唯我独尊 which served curry rice.

Time to move on to our next destination; the airbnb for the night! It's also my first experience trying out airbnb and i am frankly curious to find out the differences.

Another ride about 15 minutes away from Teppan Okonomiyaki Masaya; drove past farmlands and a railway track where most free and easy visitors would travel along if they take the train from Sapporo

Our airbnb for the night! To be truthful, i wasn't that impressed and i guess the issue lies with me as i didn't enjoy the minsu in Taiwan too. For more pictures on the insides of the airbnb, click here.

A very pretty house right opposite the airbnb!

Our intention was to unload our luggage at the airbnb and then proceed to the flower fields. However, we found out that there wasn't a lock for our rooms and being typical kiasi Singaporeans, we decided to load up the cars with our luggage again.

Noticed this towering statue of a Bodhisattva; strangely, i couldn't find more information about it. Those who had stayed in Furano Hops Hotel might be able to provide some insights since the statue is quite near to it.

Shikisai-No-Oka (四季彩の丘) - our first flower fields in Hokkaido!

Sure was beautiful but the above photograph didn't do it much justice. To be bombarded by many amazing photos showcasing Shikisai-No-Oka (四季彩の丘), click here! By the way, do try their Hokkaido soft serve ice cream

Crowd had thinned significantly when we left the place.

Back when i was researching for the trip, i was considering the above establishment (Lunch & Cafe Fuu) for lunch since it's only a few hundred meters away from Shikisai-No-Oka (四季彩の丘)

Flower fields of Shikisai-No-Oka (四季彩の丘) as we were driving. At this point, i took over the steering wheel from Alex as i seriously miss driving after scrapping my car over a year ago

Ecstatic although 'mistakes' did occur since the rented car was equipped with an automatic gear; e.g. stepped onto the brake pedal when i am suppose to be accelerating as my brain was telling me to shift gear and pushing the gear to "reverse" as i thought R stands for "Ride".

Other than the aforementioned mistakes, i think i drove pretty well on the relatively straight road. Pity Alex forgives yet never forgets and his nagging continued to rain non-stop on me.

For such a small town, i am surprised to see a rather large building housing a pachinko parlour! One regret from this Japan trip is that i never get to play the pachinko machine!

No, we were not on our way back to the airbnb even though we did pass by. Our objective was to check out this magical village that's hidden in a forest and came alive when the sun sets. .

Flanked by tall pine trees, it did feel kind of mystical as our car got nearer to the attraction.

Ningle Terrace - the little people village! A not bad place to visit and there were a lot of interesting, unique stuff that you can buy. The only problem i faced was that the prices for those items were on the steep side.

Motorcycles - why did i take the photo? Because i don't see a lot of motorcycles on the roads while driving in Hokkaido and that's fascinating to me as it's usually the cheapest mode of private motorized transport in a country.

Dinner at Kumagera - just as i was typing out this post, i saw from TripAdvisor that its ranking has dropped from #2 to #4. To know what i had at this michelin-starred establishment, click here

Night was still young at 9 pm and a trip to the nearby Ralse Mart should be quite fun. Time to load up on bottled water, instant noodles and snacks for the next few days!

Another regret in Hokkaido; i should have purchased those items on the right side! Know what they are? Sparklers and catherine wheels (i think) for the summer!

Look like food offerings to me?

We were there for less than ten minutes before the announcement came on and lights were progressively switched on; yes, the supermarket was closing and we were the last customers!

A drive back with not much street lights as we cut across the agricultural farms from the main Furano town to our airbnb. Picture taken by me as Alex insisted on driving. :(

Having Fun on the New Downtown Line - For Jovyn @ Downtown Line 3 Open House [Singapore]

Jovyn was all ready for the Downtown Line 3 Open House; dressed in a rainbow
dress that was purchased in
Malacca, she appeared as an obedient, sweet little thing who would quickly hide quietly behind the parents in front of strangers.

That's merely a front for who she really is; without her parents who would look disapprovingly at her rubber-faced expression, she was as carefree as a bird and proceeded to strike a Saturday night fever dance pose in the middle of the train!

And flexed her tiny muscles!

Honestly, i think she has the looks of a person who can really fight! Maybe i should persuade my sister to enrol her in mixed martial arts or something; for all you know, she could be the next Angela Lee

Obviously, she is still a young gal at heart and her constant cheerfulness is a sharp contrast to the brother somewhat more serious demeanor.

Full of mischief - she has the knack to make someone laugh and even though she is shy (a trait that i possess too); she managed to bring a smile to many commuters in the same train carriage as us!

Hiding behind the folded fan, we were supposed to play a classic game called 喜怒哀樂, where you are supposed to express happiness, anger, sorrow and joy!

Cuteness max yet failed miserably!

Who wants to rent her for halloween?! She looked just like a mini, female version of Hei Bai Wu Chang (黑白無常) with each hand holding to a fan! Funny yet morbid!

After all the abuse, it's no wonder that my fan was damaged! Thankfully, it wasn't an expensive one and i easily replaced it with non-folding fan from Daiso!

Furano Delice Honten - #1 of 158 Restaurants in Furano: Rush for the Double Fromage Cheesecake! @ Hokkaido [Japan] #FuranoDelice

In the past, free and easy travellers relied heavily on hardcover guidebooks to find recommended eats in a foreign country; nowadays, the reliance is spread across blogs, guidebooks and TripAdvisor

It's because of the ranking on TripAdvisor that i specially planned a visit to Furano Delice Honten; come on, it's ranked top out of 158 restaurants and not especially out of the way from the airbnb we stayed at the night before.

My only worry; it might be crowded and it will be a pain to queue when time might be better spent somewhere else! However, it was a picture of peacefulness when we arrived at the place; if not for the signage outside, i would have assumed it's a residential property!

I knew what i would be having that morning but if you are undecided, you may refer to the laminated poster at the entrance for recommendations. Coffee was supposed to be good although i didn't try since i am a sucker for local Singaporean coffee.

The walk in might appear somewhat un-Japanese with no manicured walkway and two trees blocking your way. In actual fact, it's still Japanese as they respect nature and it's better to keep the trees than cutting them.

Mistletoe in summer?
I bet this place would be even prettier come winter time!

Plenty of outdoor seating with one that's like an unsheltered tree house for those who enjoy the nature. For pampered Singaporeans who can't stand the heat, the nice, air-conditioned indoors shall be our preferred choice.

The simple, unassuming indoor seating.

Self-service plain water; in Japan, it's common to serve plain water without you paying a single cent. Now i can understand why some people were so pissed when some restaurants in Singapore started charging for plain water a few years ago!

Technically, Furano Delice Honten is not restaurant; rather, it's more a dessert store or bakery with a mouthwatering range of cakes to choose from.

For a man coming to almost 40 years ago, i honestly can't stomach as much as i would like to and could manage only the key recommended products; no prize for guessing what i had.

Hot Chocolate - Alex would usually get hot chocolate whenever he sees it on the menu; this one from Furano Delice was too thick and chocolatey! Luckily for me, i am happy with just the free cup of plain water.

Egg Madeleines - housed in a paper egg carton, this would be the kind of food souvenirs that receivers would remember for a long period of time.

A carton had six pieces of egg madeleines that were kept fresh in a plastic packaging. Definitely a plus point if i am going to buy a few cartons home.

Sadly, they failed to impress; instead of being soft and fluffy, the texture was a bit dense and it was overly sweet. Furthermore, my benchmarks when it comes to Madeleines are the warm, freshly made ones from DB Bistro

The two stars of Furano Delice Honten; double fromage cheesecake and milk pudding!

They looked so perfect together but i had to order them separately; initially thought i could get a cheaper deal if they were a set. :(

Furano Milk Pudding - shake the glass bottle well and indulge! It's like swallowing liquefied egg tart that had been blended so perfectly; the richness of the egg and the sweetness of the caramel fused into a few mouthfuls of yummy goodness!

Double Fromage Cheesecake - everyone told me i should try the double fromage cheesecake in Hokkaido and i was utterly blown away by the above; it's a two-layer cheesecake with the bottom being solid cheesecake whereas the top was like a soft bean-curd like cheese topping. The taste was so amazing; it wins every other cheesecake i had in my whole life!

Otaru Canal - Be There for the Sake of Being There As a Tourist @ Hokkaido [Japan] #otarucanal

$

Otaru Canal is said to be the number one attraction in Otaru, a small city that's less than an hour train ride from Sapporo in Hokkaido, and we decided to pay it a visit despite reservations from friends who had been there.

Honestly, i can understand why those friends felt that way as the canal was underwhelming and aside from the contrast of old with new; the canal itself didn't appear any special from the monsoon drains in Singapore.

The converted warehouses on the ride side of the canal did make the environment more charming and it's hard to imagine that a hundred years ago, the canal was filled with smaller boats that acted as delivery medium from the larger ships to the warehouses.

Without the bustle on the left side, where modern buildings stood and hoards of people strolled along a parallel path, it was indeed a picturesque scene worthy for use on postcards!

I heard that the view was extremely romantic during winter when the entire island of Hokkaido would be blanketed by a thick layer of snow. Since i am terribly scared of the extreme cold, i don't think i would ever have a chance to see it for real in my life.

It was crowded even though i can still squeeze in for some nicely composed pictures. By the way, the lamps were gas-powered; just like they were in a century ago!

This particular spot i was at would be the most crowded as it gave a nice view of the canal. There's an information counter which was already closed at that time. You can actually take a boat along the canal (at a charge) but we didn't have sufficient time.

A fountain that dispensed drinking water! Frankly, even though i wasn't that impressed with Otaru, i did consider dropping by on a day trip as there's so much i didn't manage to do; visit the aquarium, take a boat trip, shop to my content at the shops along the beautiful Sakaimachi Street.

Another thing you can do; engage a rickshaw driver to check out the nearby attractions in a traditional rickshaw! It's hard work as evidence by the muscular thighs they all had. Darn, they made me so conscious of my chopstick legs!

Would i be back? Definitely to Otaru the city if i visit Hokkaido again and given the proximity of the canal to the key attractions, why not right?

Heng Huat Fried Kway Tiao (興發炒粿條) - You Got to Feel Healthy after Seeing the Leafy Vegetables on Top @ Pasir Panjang Food Centre [Singapore]

$

Pasir Panjang Food Centre is no stranger to me and i am surprised it had been missed out in this blog with over 2,000 postings! I clearly remember dining there one night but a deep memory probing revealed that the lighting condition was bad then and picture quality for the BBQ stuff we ordered couldn't make the cut.

Oh well, i am back in the daytime this time and as i wasn't in the mood for barbecued food from the many stalls there; i decided to give the char kway teow a try. p.s. don't know why; i have been craving for noodles these few weeks!

Colleagues had warned me beforehand; it would be topped with a lot of green vegetables and they were not kidding!  I was expecting only a few pieces of vegetables and what i received did give a mental boost that i am going to have a healthy lunch that day!

False impression no doubt as it would just be a slightly less healthy lunch. Anyway, the cai xin (a leafy vegetable in Asia) wasn't fried together with the noodle and tasted pretty decent; crunchy and actually quite juicy.

As the boss didn't appear to be having a good mood, i didn't go on my normal special order of extra black sauce; hence what i had could have been sweeter even though it was already rather flavourful with a smoky undertone and the bits of chai po (Chinese dried radish) did a great job in enhancing the palatability of the dish.

At S$3 a plate, this was too small a portion and i cleaned it in no time. I was wondering why those behind me in the queue were ordering S$4 or S$5! Aside from asking for a bigger portion next time, i would remember to ask the boss to remove the cockles from my char way tiao!

Made's Warung - Balinese Nasi Campur Special @ Kuta [Bali Island, Indonesia]

$

0
I planned to try local food in Bali and though i had managed to check out the babi guling, there's another item on my list; Nasi Campur (mixed rice)!

There were a few famous restaurants but for ease of travelling given the limited time i had on the Indonesian island, i needed one nearer to Grand Istana Rama Hotel. Thankfully, the hotel is located in a touristy area and Made's Warung, a 15--minute walk away, seemed like a great fit for my schedule.

Decor was traditionally Indonesian with two levels to choose from. It's non-air-conditioned; hence, do pray that the weather wasn't too hot / humid when you visit.

My initial impression assumed that Made's Warung was a dining establishment serving authentic traditional Balinese / Indonesian cuisine. I believe it is but Western desserts, breakfast, salads, pasta, pancakes and even Japanese dishes!

Well, i am still sticking to the local delights.

Mineral Water - a bottle of plain water for me as there's another round of food at a burger place in two to three hours' time and i had to control the amount of trash that would be going into my body!

Avocado Juice - managed to steal a sip from Alex and it was so creamy and refreshing! Definitely welcome in the hot weather and not as sweet as some other versions that included chocolate sauce / gula melaka.

Black Rice Pudding - this came recommended and was served warm! Looked a bit like the Singapore's Or Bi Beh (black glutinous rice) and taste wise; similar to eating watery red bean paste. Flavour was weak though and the sweetness could be reduced, in my opinion.

Nasi Campur Special - i chose this over Nasi Campur as it's not every month i would be in Bali and i might as well for the special version.

There's a variety of ingredients surrounding the bowl-shaped rice; satay, vegetables, sardine, prawns, chicken. Don't they remind us of our local mixed vegetables rice or Nasi Padang? Except that we get to pick and choose the ingredients back home.

A familiar experience and one i enjoyed very much as the mish-mash of ingredients in every spoonful was delicious! The only negative feedback was maybe the satay which could have been more tender.

Surfers Surfing on Choppy Waters at Tanah Lot in Bali [Indonesia]

Bali is said to be a surfer's paradise and i can understand why when the water was continuously choppy with rolling waves in the short four days i was there.

I am not interested in surfing given my lack of hand-foot-mind coordination, the unknown factors in the water and my preference to be under the water rather than above it. I mean, which right minded individual would surf in the above conditions?!

There were two in the water that day and i was inherently curious as i have never seen surfing for real before; i prepared my camera and held it in position as i waited for next wave to envelop them.

It was exciting and i can so imagine the adrenaline high that the surfer felt when he successfully conquered the waves! Key question is; would i want to try?

Maybe, maybe. Never try, never know although the older i get, the more i am scared of death. Not so much about the after-death but more like there are so many things i have yet to do when i am alive, the numerous loans that i am servicing and the fear of losing my loved ones (from the perspective of someone who is passing on).

Jinjja Chicken - A Korean Fast Food Restaurant (Halal) @ Yishun's Northpoint City [Singapore]

This would be, once again, another posting on a new food outlet in the rejuvenating Northpoint City (used to be known as Northpoint shopping centre) for the benefit of my fellow Yishunites!

Jinjja Chicken isn't the first Korean fast food restaurant in the mall as there's already 4Fingers; although some would argue that 4Fingers is more a fusion eatery. Oh well, doesn't matter to laymen like myself.

As with normal fast food restaurants, order has to be taken at the ordering counter with payment made before your food can be cooked. And once that's done at Jinjja Chicken, do keep in mind the queue number on your receipt!

Once that same queue number shows up on the TV screen at the collection counter; you may then proceed to pick up your food.

At the same pick up counter was a section where you can your cutlery, straws, serviettes, plastic gloves and a metal pot for the chicken bones! Since there's no sink for diners to wash their hands, i would strongly recommend taking the plastic gloves.

1332 - this was the 4D number i bought. Just kidding of course as that's my queue number for the food i ordered! I went again recently and the above was missing a bibimbap that i would be reviewing as well in this post.

Sikhye Drink - a rice-based beverage that tasted a bit like barley tea and was a bit bland. On my second visit, we had the same thing and mum commented it was too sweet for her. Yuzu was better, in my opinion.

Tteokbokki Fries - literally French fries and Korean rice cakes mixed together with no blended amalgamation! I felt cheated, especially when there were only two pieces of Tteokbokki!

Jinjja Wings - we opted for the 6-piece mix which consisted of 3 soy garlic and 3 yangnyeom. Surprisingly, they weren't served piping hot (unlike the Oppa Chicken at AMK); taste wise, however, we enjoyed the soy garlic wings with a higher affection reserved for the yangnyeom which had a hot and sweet marinade that were both numbing and shiok.

Jiajang Myeon - had been watching running man (the popular Korean variety show) and i was craving for the black bean noodles! Frankly, it didn't taste that amazing and i would be better off with our local fish ball noodles. Nevertheless, it was quite pleasurable to loudly slurp in the black, saucy noodles and the taste did get better after a while.

Bulgogi Beef Kimbap - this would be suitable for picnics or when friends visit as the kimbap (Korean sushi) was served in an attractive box!

Furthermore, that was a lot of beef in the middle; mildly sweet yet satisfying with cheese and pieces of crunchy lettuce and carrots! This would be one item i will seriously consider for dinner when i am too lazy to cook!

Chicken Bibimbap - this was one item i failed to try on my first visit as there were too much food for three of us. Hence, i eagerly ticked this off the menu when my mom said i can order anything i want so long it doesn't contain beef.

For just S$7.90, this was definitely decent tasting and wasn't overly spicy. Thanks to the runny egg, the mixed up rice with vegetables and meat had a moist texture that i personally prefer for bibimbap! Next time, i shall opt for the beef bibimbap!
