Mom's Birthday 2017

September is the month of many birthdays for my immediate family members and you can be guaranteed that i would have individual blog postings for each of them; first of which would be my dearest mom!

She and her two darlings; in time to come, i believe i could make out a nice photo collage of her and the kids. Shall do that before the kids reach the dreaded rebellious age.

Kisses time; again, this scene might be gone in a few years' time when both Jerald and Jovyn reach puberty. Sigh, how time passes and i can really feel my age nowadays. Put it this way, there's only three more years before i reach the big 40.

A couple more photographs before dimming the lights for the customary birthday song!

Nowadays, the singing has been cut down from the past four different versions to only two; English and Chinese. Latter is important as mom is predominantly a Chinese speaker.

Mom was making a wish whereas Jovyn was simply gunning to be the first to blow out the candles! Hey, that's reserved only for the birthday gal!

She purposely ignored our pleas and laughed heartily when she succeeded! My mom must be thinking:"there goes my chance for a hit at the TOTO jackpot".

Finally, the birthday gal managed to cut her birthday cake in peace as Jovyn's sole interest was in blowing out the candles! The 'cake' is a charcoal Swiss roll that's once again baked by me!

Tasted all right although texture was a bit dry. Filling was matcha jam from O'Sulloc; courtesy from the Great Kon who travelled to South Korea recently!

Ningle Terrace - The Magical Little People Village @ Furano in Hokkaido [Japan]

Unlike the bustling cities, Furano is a relatively quiet town at night and if you are the kind who couldn't imagine doing nothing when the sun sets, i would strongly recommend a place where you can spend a little bit of time before departing for dinner.

Rest assured, i am not going to throw you into the woods and hike along dirt paths. Why? Because i am not keen in doing that myself too! Darn, i am growing into my parents, where comfort and urban conveniences take priority!

There was, in fact, a proper entrance and the boardwalk was nicely constructed to bring you into a world that exist in some of Enid Blyton stories; the Ningle Terrace.

Although i made a mental note to check out the above cottage later, i guess i forgot at the end as the weather was pretty chilly and all of us were in dire need of food to warm the bodies.

Time to step into the timeless village!

Now, the best time to drop by Ningle Terrace is when the sun sets; i would have preferred to go much later when the sky is filled with stars if not for the fact that we were not that hungry then and photo-taking at night without a tripod is darn frustrating.

Stepping in was like stumbling into a magical gnome village in a European forest. Surrounded by tall pine trees, the little wooden cottages honestly just lacked a smoking chimney to make the place even more realistic.

Unfortunately, the ningles (the rumoured 15-centimeter tall people who live in Hokkaido's woods) do not take residence in the forest but Ningle Terrace serves to remind all visitors of their existence.

Bare, empty cottages would have quickly led to the demise of the terrace; hence, the operator had brought in arts and craft shops selling interesting, unique wares!

With their uniqueness come a price tag that's very hard to stomach. Furthermore, i was aghast to find that photo-taking wasn't allowed in the little houses! :(

Singaporean being Singaporean; we play by the rules yet we couldn't resist thinking out of the box to satisfy our slightly rebellious self! Like taking picture outside the shop and capturing the wares (i.e. wind chimes, lights) through the glass window!

It's hard sometimes.

I had to toggle with the lens and the camera settings to get the picture i somewhat wanted. It's not perfect although it's still better than having a orange-washed photo.

The forest that's just inches away. Hokkaido is a huge place and in case you are unaware, wild bears do exist and they do roam around. I am happy to be residing in a small country like Singapore where the nasty wild animal to make the national news is a long tailed macaque.

We chanced upon a cluster of messiness in the midst of total cleanliness; emotions didn't choke me but i guess it's worth a try to take a arty-farty shot.

I am not the only one.

In line with its nature theme, the signboards were simple yet exuded a beauty in its simplicity; thankfully not the glaring, LED ones that many establishments have taken a liking for.

Think this shop specialised in hand-drawn 3D postcards.

Every house had the noticeable sign at its entrance; no photo taking and no video taking. I could have bravely asked in my cannot-make-it Japanese but if i am rejected, i would feel guilty if i choose to go back to the "loophole".

A hot beverage is a must-have for Alex in cold weather and he insisted on dropping by the coffee house for a drink to warm his hands, throat and stomach!

Woody interior.

Think the chimney is a working one but maybe it would only light up in winter when the temperature would fall to the negative numerals. Frankly, i am not keen to experience the super cold as that means bringing a lot of winter wear and even then, the chill can still totally eat into my bones.

Menu of coffee house chu-chu for your reference.

Want to chill out in the cool outdoors and people-watch? That's possible even though we didn't take up the opportunity; just want to chop chop check out the shops as we were quite tired.

The hanging fairy lights gave a warm glow and in addition to illuminating the path for visitors, they added a seemingly magical aura to the village.

Don't you think so?

To be honest, the little houses look quite similar; the above stood out for the glowing balls placed right outside the shop; like fairy lights without wires!

I can't recall if they were candles with a hollow middle or translucent glass balls with a tealight in the middle! That's what happened when one is too tired and to tell you the truth, we had yet to check into our accommodation for the day.

A not too bad photo, i thought.

Drinking his hot cocoa and enjoying the moment.

Reached the one end of Ningle Terrace and we would be making the loop back to the entrance. There was a path to another coffee house which we decided to skip as none of us wanted a drink and it would take us three minutes of walk. One word; lazy.

Wooden carvings of the ningles, i think.

An art gallery which bored me; i could never appreciate art and if you let me choose between an art film, a comedy and a horror movie, the art film would come last.

Want to get something for your girlfriend / mother? Do step into the silverware cottage that's directly translated into the essence of snow.

Particularly eye-catching were the snow flake pendants! Almost wanted to purchase one for my mom but decided otherwise as she can be picky and the pendant was pricey.

After a while, the place can appear to be relatively boring, especially when you are not into shopping. I felt that vibe from the rest of my tour mates whose main (and for some, only) objective was to check out the flower fields!

Leather goods.

As a kid, there's one toy that never fails to fascinate me; i roughly know its spelling even though i didn't know how to pronounce it. And on that very day at Ningle Terrace, i saw them in rattan tray; kaleidoscopes!

Housed in wooden casing that's hand-carved, their price tags almost made my eyes popped out from the socket; a tiny one would set me back by about S$20-30 and the top range (above) can be a few hundred dollars! No way am i going to spend that much to relive my childhood.

Almost coming to the end of the loop.

Wooden pinwheel that acts like a diffuser when you stick it in a bottle of aroma oil; at least it's unique compared to the common diffuser reeds.

Cute paper weights and mosquito coil holders!

Last photo before we said goodbye to Ningle Terrace. My conclusion is that you can find a lot of gift ideas at Ningle Terrace although you do need to prepare a lot of cash. As it was only day one of my trip, i have to be careful in my spending.

Day Two of My 4 Days, 3 Nights Itinerary to Bali - The Island of the Gods @ Indonesia

As i get older, sleep is a luxury and i found myself having insomnia nowadays, even when i am overseas. It tends to get worse when the trip is short as i would like to cover as many places as i could in a limited period of time!

On our official first day in Bali (since we arrived the night before and i wouldn't technically count it as a day), we were out by 8 am in seek of breakfast as it wasn't covered for our stay in Grand Istana Rama hotel

I could have separately purchased for a buffet breakfast in the hotel but knowing myself, i would only have eggs, toast and jam and that's totally not worth the cost. Furthermore, we would be embarking on a road trip and i didn't want to scramble around for a toilet due to overindulgence!

The beachwalk shopping mall wasn't open for business yet although my main aim was to check out Flapjaks further down the road. I actually inquired the night before if it would be open at 8 am and received a positive response; bloody shop was still closed!

Without a Plan B, we could only step into the world's most iconic restaurant; McDonald's! Thinking the taste could be consistent across the world, i ordered a serving of hotcakes. Bad move as it was horrid tasting! Singapore's version is way better! Check out my review here

Delayed for a while as there were three cars booked for the road trip and one was late! I was already seated in one and was marveling at the tray of canang sari on the dashboard when someone asked if i could take another car instead.

I happily obliged; no reason not to so long i could get a corner seat where i can freely shoot thousands of photos along the journey.

Split gateway that leads to the famous yet touristy Kuta Beach

An already-open retail shop even though it wasn't even 9.30 am.

Traffic in Bali - we didn't encounter any jam at that time but traffic was heavy. The Kuta area we stayed in had narrow roads and traffic was can be a torture at night. What we didn't expect then on day one was an extremely bad traffic jam on the evening that we were supposed to leave for the airport.

Cloudy day; at least we can still see the pockets of blue sky. I love the rain although not when i am travelling as photo-taking can be a pain in the ass!

Notice the little dots soaring in the sky? They were kites as the July and August is the period for strong wind and there's even a layang (kite in Bahasa) festival for villagers to showcase their kites and flying skills!

DK - the first two letters denote the license plate for Bali-registered cars.

Beautiful entrance; in the beginning, i thought such nicely decorated entry would belong to a temple until i realised there were just too many of such structures! Can't be that Bali has so many places of worship!

A creature with a large body and small head; adjust the proportion a bit and it would look more or less like the lion in a traditional Chinese lion dance.

The car drove into a built-up area with stores selling handicraft and items used in religious rituals. Before long, we arrived at our first destination; Sukawati Art Market!

Plenty of things to buy if your house has a Balinese them! The steamed corn at the entrance of the Sukawati Art Market was so much more satisfying than the McDonald's breakfast i had earlier! Aside from the art market, i also ventured into the nearby local market known as Pasar Umum Sukawati

Time to meet up with the rest and move northwards in the car to our next item on the itinerary; the main activity hub for Bali is in the South and the North was more agricultural land, where ducks freely roamed the padi fields.

Checking out the Tegenungan Waterfall! For more photographs and the review, click here. Bring extra clothing and remember to shower in the spring water! And do make sure to visit the area with many stacked up stones

On the road again; unlike my trip to Hokkaido (self-drive), i don't think i can survive self-driving in Bali! Too many cars and roads are narrower!

Such a pretty house! Or was it a temple?

With a local holding to the steering wheel of the car, i posed my question to him and was surprised to hear that many temple-looking buildings were in fact private houses! Hence, please don't anyhow barge in; thinking it's a public temple!

Kite flying again; according to the driver, kite competitions are big events in Bali and prizes for the winner can be very lucrative!

Did i mention before that the Balinese ladies can balance many things using their head?!

Dislike dark clouds! And you know what i usually do when i see them? I would start to sing the nursery rhyme "rain, rain, go away! come again another day!"

It's a pity we didn't manage to explore the surroundings after lunch as we were apparently quite behind on time and there's another place we had to visit.

Cantik Agriculture Luwak Coffee - why i typed "had to"? Because my personal view is that visits to luwak coffee plantation is a tourist trap with astronomically-priced coffee powder! Having said that, we were not forced to buy anything although i will not include this in my future trips to Bali.

Exploration of my first Balinese temple; the Pura Tirtha Empul (Holy Spring Temple) where you can participate in body cleansing rituals in purification pools with fishes swimming within!

Nearing the Tegalalang rice terrace that everyone said was a most go! Visit the link here for more photographs and my frustration with the 'donations'!

By all means, pay it a visit if you have never visited the rice terrace in China! What i experienced at Longji in Guangxi province was way more spectacular!

Totally shagged out and with the sun setting, we knew we wouldn't be able to catch the supposed amazing sunset at Tanah Lot temple which was strangely out of the way and shouldn't be included in our itinerary.

It was a car journey of more than two hours back to Grand Istana Rama hotel and after resting our feet for more minutes, we headed out to the streets again in seek of Bali's most famous food; Babi Guling

The original store i wanted to try was closed and we had to walk much further away. Felt a bit guilty as we had about 8 persons but i did suggest they could check out the other dining establishments along the way.  Anyway, many shopping opportunities for the shopaholics!

Objective cleared at the crowded Warung Babi Guling Bu Dayu!

I was pleased with the Babi Guling at Warung Babi Guling Bu Dayu (check out review here) but some felt it was overly spicy and hence, couldn't finish the meal. So what did they do? They decided to have comfort fast food at KFC!

For me, i am not agreeable to look at them eating and decided to roam around! Found this cute dog that definitely had an owner. Despite the many dogs i spotted in Bali, dog poo on the streets was rare compared to Bangkok. Nevertheless, please continue to keep a lookout!

The empty temple appeared to have some activity deep within its compound as i could hear the loud traditional music. As i was alone, i decided to keep my feet to outside the premises.

A friend recommended the Astor Wafer Sticks! Not too bad even though i would still cast my vote for Julie's strawberry love letters!

Body massage at Smart Spa! It's rated pretty high on TripAdvisor for the Kuta area and you know what, no talking inside so that you can truly relax in the quietness!

We were the last customers to exit Smart Spa and the street we encountered as we stepped out was a far cry from the bustling one just a few hours before.

Strolled past Hard Rock Cafe again; honestly, i don't understand why so many people want to take pictures with the Hard Rock Cafe. In Singapore's Hard Rock Cafe, the phenomenon didn't appear.

Last stop; convenience stall where we can stock up on mineral water!

Coconut Wheels - The Powered Up Special Candies on Candy Crush I Hate!

Yes, i am still playing candy crush and with the strategies mentioned here, i am frequently on the top of the game, together with a few friends who are just as obsessed as me to clear the levels all the way until the "to be continued" message.

Aside from the daily booster spin and the candy drops collection jar, there's now the daily treat which would greatly assist your gameplay with more powered up candies that you can use to solve the difficult levels!

The ones i absolutely love would be the colour bomb, lollipop hammer and free switch! However, i have been getting one that has limited use as it's not common available for usage at the levels!

No prize for guessing which one since i have already indicated it in the subject title and hints have been dropped in the past few photos.

Coconut wheel and i am already having close to 400 and the number doesn't drops as i never get to use them! Please, please Candy Crush God, give me MORE of the three power-ups i like so much!

Potato Head Beach Club (Restaurant) - Great Place to Chill Out! @ Bali [Indonesia]

Friends who know me would be aware that i am not into the club scene and would prefer to stay at home rather than to get myself wasted and to wake up the next day with a massive headache.

However, someone suggested Potato Head Beach Club for dinner when i was in Bali and since it would be a group dinner, i found it a bit hard to reject. Furthermore, the beach clubs in Bali were supposed to be very good and you can even find their spin-offs in Singapore like Ku De Ta!

Security was tight with bag checks and stuff and after we cleared it, we were kind of in a fix as there's no direction on where you should proceed to from there!

We just walked straight until we caught hold of the sign as above. For a place known to be popular, there wasn't much of a crowd on a Friday evening and you can't blame us for thinking it might not be as great as it was made out to be.

Was in fact expecting a queue but there was none! Anyway, an interesting facade made up of hundreds of wooden windows that were quite the norm in the old days.

Going up one level; again, the disquiet was disturbing! Did we land ourselves in a tourist trap? But the review on google was an impressive 4.4 from over 1,600 reviewers!

A different storey greeted us once we entered Potato Head Beach Club - the whole place was filled with people and we did the right thing by making a reservation beforehand. There were three levels; top one was a pizza place, second floor served Indonesia food whereas the lower level (where we were at) was more for Western cuisine.

Our reservation was for level one as the second level was already full. Honestly, I wasn't too happy to see the orange lights as pictures taken of food would look extremely unappetizing.

After ordering my dinner, i dashed out to check out the beach club as mountain-tortoise (basically ignorant) me has never been to one before!

First thing that struck me when i first entered the restaurant was the infinity pool facing the beach and the ocean with a bar counter that had its seats underneath the water!

In other places, i would have thought it's stupid to have a pool when the sea was just a few meters away. However, the waves were choppy at this side of Bali and it actually made practical sense for people to enjoy the sea-view while soaking in water.

Bed-sized lounges in case you do not want your skin wrinkled up!

It was too cloudy that evening; if not, i guess you would be blessed with a beautiful sunset while relaxing on the lounge beds. Thought it's a really nice place for those looking for a chill-out venue and drinks are not as expensive as Singapore!

Beach was frankly nothing to scream about. Looking for white-sand beach that's almost powder like? Maldives is definitely the place! You may check out my summarised itinerary here

Time for my dinner! As expected, all the photos were "orange-washed" and i was thinking if i should just give the food a miss; as in not taking any photo of it as i still needed dinner!

I am grateful to my tour group mates for helping to switch on the torchlight function on their mobile to shine my order; the 180 grams Altitude Farms Pork Belly.

My review, unfortunately, wouldn't be a good one; the pork belly was super fatty which would have a complement if the crispy roasted skin wasn't insanely tough! It was a bit overwhelming after a while and can you imagine that i actually left one piece untouched. Even the BBQ corn failed to remedy the situation; not buttery enough and there's a strange tinge of sourness.

Kumagera - The Michelin-Starred Restaurant (Ranked #2 on Tripadvisor for food in Furano) @ Hokkaido [Japan]

$

Back when i was planning my itinerary for my first Japan trip to Hokkaido, i relied heavily on TripAdvisor and Google Maps for places of interest, including potential spots for meals.

In Furano itself, the restaurants / cafes chosen for lunch, dinner and breakfast were ranked top three on TripAdvisor and number 2 was Kumagera.

Housed within a building that looked like it was overrun by money plant, you would definitely be taken aback by the bunches of overhanging fruits; it's a grapevine! Maybe it wasn't season yet as the grapes appeared too small.

Waiting for our turn as the restaurant was full that night! As expected from Japan's exemplary customer service, there was a notice informing diners that they might take slightly longer to serve us.

Couldn't quite pinpoint the decorative style even though as many of you would be aware that i don't care. Food taste would take the highest priority and in an evaluation matrix, be accorded the heaviest weightage.

While waiting, i suddenly caught sight of something red on a table; what the..... Kumagera is in the Michelin guide?!?! I didn't know how many stars it attained in 2017 but a search online revealed one start back in 2012.

After a wait of about 15 minutes, we were brought to the second floor where there were two additional sections for diners!

Don't understand Japanese? Ask for a Chinese & English menu! Variety was wide and we had a hard time deciding what to eat. I was focused on only one thing; beef.

Prefer something special? You can try the roasted bear meat with ginger soy sauce meat! I remember watching an episode of a popular Taiwanese food variety show where the hosts recommended a restaurant in Hokkaido for bear cuisine (stew bear paw etc)!

Precautionary message, in four languages, for those who couldn't wait - "Some dishes would come early and some would come late because different cooking ways. Thank you for your understanding."

Alex got the message and proceeded to take a snooze.

100% Furano Grape Juice - this came more than 20 minutes later and arrived at the right time as i didn't drink much water that day. It was filled with the richness of grapes and super nice to have! Only problem; too little!

Cheese Tofu - ordered simply because it was unique and one of our travel mates was apparently into cheese. I only took a small bite as it's technically not ordered by me.

Served cold, the texture was hard, unlike the silken soft tofu we are better accustomed to. It tasted literally of cheese and i don't know about the others; i would have very much preferred a block of cheese.

Chicken Cutlet - a good picture of Japanese style chicken cutlet although the goodness is merely visual as it wasn't as amazing as i thought it would be.

The chicken had a nice crunch (thanks to the breadcrumbs) and tasted not bad although the marination could have been more memorable. Rasa Sayang's chicken cutlet would be ranked higher and it's halved the price. Not to mention as well that it's conveniently located in Ang Mo Kio in Singapore!

Furano Wagyu Beef Shabu Shabu - indicated for one person in Chinese, i was surprised to find such a big pot of soup placed in front of me!

Meat portion wasn't as generous though and i would very much like it if the vegetables (tofu, mushroom, udon, glass noodles and lettuce) were to be replaced by a few more slices of Furano wagyu beef.

In case you need a closer look; seven thin slices. Truthfully, i could add another portion of beef although it would set me back by a staggering 3,500 yen (approximately S$43). Never mind, i can make do with lesser meat so late at night.

Soup was bland and seemed to be seasoned with just kelp and maybe a dash of salt. The vegetables didn't improve the flavour and i was so tempted to throw in a few spoonfuls of soya sauce.

The slices of Furano wagyu beef didn't disappoint though despite the lack of flavorful soup; they were utterly tender and soft and given the limited pieces, i had to slowly chew through each piece to lengthen the blissfulness.

Melon with Sake - a fellow travel mate couldn't resist and he kindly shared it with all of us! I don't really drink alcohol and i am under the impression that sake is very potent. However, i am all for taking just a small sip!

Woah, didn't regret at all - the melon had soaked up the sake hungrily and there's a sweetness that made the sake very palatable! Even the pieces of melon tasted extremely sweet; did the sake catalyse the original sweetness of the melon?

Pricing at 1,200 yen which wasn't too expensive given that a non-alcoholic Korean bingsoo in Singapore could already have set us back at around the same pricing!

Qi Le Boneless Chicken Rice (祺乐起骨鸡饭) - Totally Worth it! @ S11 Coffee Shop [Opposite Yishun MRT Station]

$

Long long time ago, i was famished after a full day of work and just wanted comfort food for dinner; decided on chicken rice and ordered a packet for takeaway. Bloody staff collected S$4 even though the range was from S$3-4! Needless to say, I blacklisted the stall since then.

A few years passed and i honestly didn't know if the stall has changed hands. However, i did notice that it is now commanding the longest queue in the crowded coffee shop right opposite Yishun MRT station!

Dad felt like having chicken rice and i was too lazy to travel to another coffee shop; hence, i removed the 'blacklist' tag from my mind and decided to give the stall another chance. Price had increased to SS$3.50 - S$4.50 for a plate of chicken rice and this time round, i was charged (rightfully without asking) S$3.50.

I was amazed by the speed and efficiency of how the staff managed to place everything on a single tray! As you can also see from the photo, the stall doesn't scrimp on the ingredients! Just the size of the bowl of soup for one person was already significantly bigger than its other competitors!

It's not even your bland and clear chicken soup; the content was peanut chicken feet soup and there were so many peanuts! Now, my mom can cook a mean pot of peanut chicken soup and i could easily finish a pot of white rice with the soup drenched on it! This tasted as good as mom's version and despite such a large plate of chicken rice given to me, i think i could still manage another full portion of rice.

Seated on a bed of crunchy beansprouts was a generous amount of tender chicken meat that was also chopped quite thickly! Roasted skin wasn't the crunchy type even though the absolute deal maker had to be the savoury oily sauce poured over the juicy meat!

Chilli had a piquant spiciness to it but i could do without it as it was a bit too hot for me. I was more impressed with the rice; it wasn't oily and although it might lose out a bit on flavour, i could moisture the dryness with the soup! Anyway, less oily means a healthier meal right?!  Always good to balance things out.

So bloody delicious; i actually went back a few days later!

Akimitsu (秋光) Signature Tendon - Award-Winning Shop @ Northpoint City [Singapore]

Yishun might have been put in a negative light for the past year but things would be changing; especially when you have the president of Singapore living among us!

Joke aside, you can't deny that Yishunians are getting excited over the slowly phase-opening of Northpoint shopping centre; there's now so many more dining establishments and today, i am going to share my review of one restaurant that just opened for business yesterday.

Akimitsu (秋光) - i first noticed the humongous advertisement pasted on the hoarding put up during renovation two weeks back and branded on it were the words "award winning tendon".

I love tendon as evidenced by my reviews here (ginza itsuki), there (kohaku), this one (kogane yama) and that one (don meijin) and i was ecstatic to have one so near to my home!

Glad that i knocked off at 5.30 pm on Fridays as i got the Akimitsu before 7.00 pm and didn't have to wait too long to get in! The above reflected the length of the queue outside the tendon shop at 7.30 pm.

Ordering via the tablet hidden by the side of the table; you don't have to search for it as the staff would kindly bring out for your use once he/she brings you to your assigned table.

In the meantime, let's attack the free flow beansprouts!

Submerged in a concoction of god-knows-what, they maintained a fresh crunchiness with a hint of appetizing peppery spiciness (rather similar to Sichuan mala) that both mom and i really enjoyed! p.s. We cleared like half of the container!

Why did i show you a glass of plain water and a glass cold houji tea? Because i didn't know that Akimitsu serves plain free for free. Houji tea came in hot or cold at S$1.90 each but only the hot one is refillable.

As part of the tendon set, we got complimentary chawanmushi and miso soup! Nothing exceptional for the soup whereas the steamed egg was quite good with a smooth consistency; only problem for greedy diners like me was that it was housed in a TINY teacup.

After a wait of about ten minutes, i got my Akimitsu Signature Tendon with the original (and recommended) asakusa original sauce! There were a ton of ingredients and i sure hope the eatery can either provide a bigger plate or a bowl next time so that we can place the deep fried goodies aside.

So what fried stuff should you expect from this akimitsu tendon? A sheet of seaweed, french bean, baby corn, mushroom, eggplant, pumpkin, sweet potato, egg, white fish and prawns!

It was a large piece of fried fish by the way which was managed superbly with the insides remaining so moist and tender! The two prawns didn't quite wow us even though the assorted vegetables tasted fresh and crunchy with just the right amount of sauce drenched on them. We took more issue with the crispy batter which was thicker than its competitors and proved to be overbearing towards the end of the end.

If you like more sauce, please feel free to self-service with the tendon sauce bottle on the table. By the way, the sauce was relatively light and didn't taste utterly sweet; even though i prefer a sweeter sauce, the overall flavour was well balanced in both saltiness and sweetness.

The fried egg is a must for any tendon as the yolk gave such a nice flavour to the rice! Okay, i am biased as i am an egg person and can have eggs for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Rice given was actually little although it's great news for both mom and i since we are perpetually on a carbo-restricted diet, especially for meals after 6 pm!

Yes, i cleaned up everything (except for the miso soup) but i can tell you; my stomach was on the verge of bursting; towards my last morsel of rice, i was struggling badly! In all, it's still a satisfactory meal but i could honestly make do with a thinner batter for the deep fried ingredients in the future.

It's been a few years since i last covered anything on the mid-autumn festival but since i was on leave last Tuesday to accompany my dad, i thought i might as well make use of the time to take photos of the decorations at Chinatown!

Hanging LED lanterns across the parallel Eu Tong Sen street and New Bridge road - not impressive enough although it could be a different story at night. Just like Christmas lighting along Orchard road, you can only feel its beauty at night.

Still, i don't get the logic of the animals that were on display; initially, i thought it would be based on zodiac animals. However, there were also birds and fishes. Thankfully, i do read the Straits Times and i understand the ten animals on display were based on "traditional lanterns popular in the 1960s to 1980s".

The main 12-meter centrepiece raised even more questions; why was the tree blue!? Was it with reference to the blue skin of the indigenous tribe featured in the mega-movie, Avatar?

Instead of fruits and leaves, sixty animal lanterns adorned the tree. My immediate reaction was horrified; it's like the animals were sacrificed and put on the tree as part of a ritual!

Don't believe me? Convert the photo into a black and white image and then tell me if the centrepiece would look out of place in Halloween Horror Nights 7.

Whatever the case, there were more than a thousand handcrafted lanterns and they were "designed in collaboration with students from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts". Out of the ten animals, the chicken, the dragon and the rabbit were clearly represented in my childhood memory!

In addition to the animals, i found lanterns featuring people; from the look of them, it's likely the representation of the four major races in Singapore.

Main performance stage which would be ready for the grand opening of the Mid-Autumn festival light up this evening.

Going down the staircase from the bridge connecting people's park complex and pagoda street. I love the way the photo panned out to include both the shophouses in the past and the covered canopy in the present.

A recreated scene from the past - definitely before my era as i don't remember seeing any rickshaw when i was young! Such photo spots would be popular with instagrammers!

Since i don't take photos of myself (and don't trust the skills of others), i shall present to you my lao-peh who would have looked right in place with his tanned skin, if not for his folded shirt and long pants.

Lantern painting competition with some really good ones! It's already hard for me to paint on a flat piece of paper and it must have been quite a challenge to do it on a lantern.

This period would also be the time when lanterns were brought out to be sold; unlike lunar new year celebrations which is restricted to the respective zodiac animals, designs from past mid-autumn festivals can still be displayed for sale.

There could be changes in material used though; in the past, paper, my time was cellophane, it later advised to hard plastic and then recently, plastic that could be blown up.

Another change would be the design to reflect the latest trend for the kids; Jovyn's favourite cartoon now is the My Little Pony. I think her favourite character is rainbow dash.

I still prefer my traditional paper lanterns; reasons being they are priced way cheaper and it's always a thrill to see them lighted up and gone in a flash.

Do the above ring a bell? They were the same chicks and chicken used for the rooster year light up this year! You can actually adopt them after the festival; maybe i should do it every year and place them in my relatively empty living room.

By the way, Sago Lane was renovated and it now features a wider walkway and purpose-built stores with elevated platforms (to protect against flooding), power and better protection in event of wet weather!

Ending the walk at the amazing Buddha Tooth Temple

Dad & Jerald's Birthday 2017

My dad's birthday is just a few days away from my nephew's and as i couldn't manage two cakes at one go, i decided to just bake a decent one for a joint celebration!

To be honest, i am quite proud of the strawberry cake as it was a lot of work to make a natural yet concentrated strawberry puree and i had a hard time smoothing the butter cream cheese.

Cake aside; let's bring the focus back to the two birthday boys! Dad is officially 65 years old now whereas Jerald is 55 years younger!

It's not easy getting the rest to get into the picture as they are fully aware it would appear on this blog. Not everyone is as easygoing as Jovyn.

Mom happily joined in too but the picture turned out blur. :( The primary fault is obviously on the cameraman for not being able to control his "models".

Singing the "song" and this time, in three languages!

Note the cheekiness in her smile and you would roughly guess what she had done. The brat had kill-steal the candle blowing from her very own grandpa! Terrible!

Kisses time for the oldest member in this family.

Cutting the cake by the grandpa and the grandson. Now that i took the effort to make cake for my family members (and some friends), the cake-cutting always brought forth an anticipation on reviews; for better or for worse.

While the combined strawberry cream cheese and butter cream was well received, even i was a tad disappointed with the texture of the cake; too dense and overly hard. Guess i should use the Asian recipe for soft, fluffy cake in the future.

Happy Birthday, Dad & Jerald!

Lunch - Delicious Yet Cheap Local Fare @ Bali Apollo Dive & Water Sports [Indonesia]

I am a cheapo at heart and thinking i might likely be ravenous after snorkelling at Nusa Dua (Bali); i actually brought along a pack of made-in-Indonesia Tim Tam, which suffered an expected fate of being torn apart with its content cleaned up in no time.

However, the snorkeling didn't take place although my fellow travel mates took longer than expected to clear their seasports activities. The cold bottle of Bintang beer didn't register as food in my brain and with lunchtime around the corner, i couldn't resist but to order a local meal from the counter in the seasports centre!

Nasi Goreng - this would be my second fried rice in Bali after the one we had on the first night at Seafood Pantai Kuta.

This was so much better tasting with a taste that's given a thumbs-up by Alex! Furthermore, the price differential is huge; the one at Apollo cost only 25,000 rupiahs and that's more than half the 55,000 rupiahs we paid for at Seafood Pantai Kuta.

Mie Goreng - again, i couldn't resist when i see fried noodle on the menu of an Indonesia eatery and it was no exception on day three of my August 2017 Bali trip. It didn't disappoint with the truly authentic flavour of the Indonesian style mie goreng that i love so much!

And you know what i realise? Usually the ones served at higher class Indonesian restaurants were not as fantastic! A fellow travel mate from Korea commented that in the four days we spent in Bali, the mie goreng here was his best meal!

Jovyn - The Poser

It's a rare sight to see Jovyn so quiet; lying on the sofa bed in the living room of my quaint little three-room flat, her focus was on the screen ahead of her. Yes, the allure of the iPad / tablet which is like a technological god saver for a majority of the parenting population.

However, once the cheeky grin appeared on her face, you know she is ready to abandon her ipadfor something else. The reason for that grin? My camera.

She started posing for me and boy did i regret not getting those professional looking lighting kit so that my photographs would turn out better than the above! Want to give yourself a good laugh? Check out the following pictures and be tickled by her exaggerated expressions and poses!

Last one was my favourite as she looked really puffed up like a body builder! p.s. just a short posting as i am feeling under the weather again. Darn, ageing is making hell of my immune system.

Bali Apollo Dive & Water Sports - Parasailing Again! @ Bali Nusa Dua [Indonesia]

Before i embarked on my trip to Bali, i excitedly told Alex that we could finally make use of our  EasyBreath snorkeling masks as the island is famous for its beaches! p.s. Alex's last snorkeling trip was to Perhentian Islands in 2015.

Alas, i didn't do much research and assumed that when i mentioned snorkeling, the driver would bring me to a beach where we can do as much snorkeling as we could at the beach. The reality couldn't have been further when our entourage of six persons were brought to Bali Apollo Dive & Water Sports at Nusa Dua.

It wasn't the white, sandy beach i thought it should be and even though i could likely snorkel in the water, there were just too many boats near the shoreline.

Alex was rightfully upset and that's not even the start of his disappointment. For snorkeling, it was available but we must pay 475,000 rupiahs per person for an hour long activity at another location!

Now, that's almost 50 dollars and for Indonesian standard, expensive! However, let's not compare as we are free to leave if we want to. Alex's Korean colleague jumped in at this point and successfully bargained with the salesperson for a better deal!

I was obviously unhappy but this appeared to be a common business practice in Bali. So for those who have the intention to go for water sports in Bali, bargaining is expected and if you need a price reference, i would share them at the end of this post.

Since the rest were keen to sign up for a few of the activities (banana boat, dive, parasailing etc), i decided to suck in my displeasure and sign on the badly-worded terms and conditions for just one activity; parasailing as i enjoyed it so much back at Sabah's Sapi Island!

As we needed to wait for the boat to bring us out, i did what i would usually do when there's time to spare; explore the surroundings!

There's a long stretch of path bordering the shoreline and i couldn't quite decide if i should go left or right as we were not given a specific waiting time and i couldn't venture too far out.

Decision; turn left.

Someone was having a go at Flying Fish! If you ask me, the flying fish was a lot more frightening compared to Banana Boat as the former would soar a few feet above water for a short moment of time!

Stretch ahead of me with the beach and sea beside me; dark clouds had congregated on the left and i was praying that rain wouldn't hit us as it would mean a total abandonment of any activities on the sea.

Another water sports centre; albeit a much smaller one. Pricing wise, it was similar to Bali Apollo Dive & Water Sports.

Please be assured that the dog was merely sleeping in the nice, windy weather.

Parasailing boat - i actually didn't realise until now that it would be the same boat i would be boarding later on!

Random photographs taken along the stretch; honestly quite a nice place to chill out and there were hotels along the coastline for those who prefer to relax by the seas.

Count the number of parasailers in the above photograph!

"Cavin" - a loud and resounding voice reached my ears and i rushed back as it's time for us to take on the activity that cost us 300,000 rupiahs per person. Darn, i do sound like a dog returning to its owner who called for it.

Taking the speedboat.

The range of water sports is quite standard across regions and countries although i haven't tried most of them (like jetski) for one reason; i find it hard to part away my hard-earned money for just that few moments of exhilaration!

Of course, you can also argue that i am still throwing money when i opted for parasailing.

However, i look at it differently; parasailing brings me up to the sky, thrills me given my fear of height, gives me a bird's eye view of the surrounding, relaxes me with the wind, entices with a lower probability of getting wild and i don't have to use much energy!

Bet these people at the pavilion were waiting for their boat to arrive.

After a wait (yes, another wait which was a total waste of precious overseas time) of about 15 minutes, the speedboat finally brought us closer to the parasailing boat.

Time to do passenger exchange.

Rope that would and should give us the assurance that it's strong enough to withstand the weight of the parasailers and the force of the wind!

Two very, very important men on the boat, whom our lives depend on.

Waiting once again for our turn!

Six of us broken up into three groups of two and mine was the first one to take on the challenge! I wasn't grouped up with Alex; instead, i would be soaring into the sky with Alex's Korean colleague.

Thinking of letting the pictures do the talking as i believe i had already described a lot back in my post on the first parasailing experience in Malaysia (Kota Kinabalu)

Last two photographs seemed to create a false illusion that we were closed to the surface of the sea but we were really quite high up!

Maybe because we were two male adults, the staff appeared to bring us higher with significantly higher sharp turns compared to the rest!

The above was considered as secured?! No, panic attack didn't strike me as i believe in sucking lemons should life gives me nothing but lemons. Okay, i admit i was a tad nervous.

Back to the boat!

More random photos as we had to wait for more people to finish before the speedboat would come and pick us up. I understand the need to cater for a minimal number of passengers as it made sense from an economical angle.

Do be aware that due to regulations, kids undertaking the parasailing activity can only soar up to a specified, albeit shorter, height, and there weren't the usual twists and turns that adult riders were subject to.

Flying fish again!

With quite a number of operators offering parasailing and other water sports, i wonder if the proximity is too close for comfort. Take the case of parasailing, what if a sudden change in wind direction result in lines being tangled up? Maybe i am thinking too much!

This looked so cool! Known as fly board (or jet blade), this would set you back by 1,100,000 rupiahs (S$110) for 15 minutes, before bargaining for discount.

Speedboat had arrived!

One of the hotels by the shoreline. Guess i don't have to travel that fair when Bintan is just an-hour plane ride away from Singapore.

Another person playing the fly board; this activity is actually available in Singapore but its initial pricing was a staggering S$228! However, i am unsure on its duration! Interested? Check out the website here

Reaching shore - by the way, most of the photographs were taken using the waterproof Olympus TG3 camera! This time, i made sure that all the batteries were fully charged!

I think i was a bit too excited to leave the speedboat as i jumped down before being told to do so. Unlike me, the rest were patiently waiting for instructions. *shrugs*

Seagrass? Seaweed? Doesn't matter but i am sure not getting into the water.

As the rest of our travel mates had signed up for other activities, Alex and i spent time eating the Tim Tam i smuggled in my backpack and having a nice local Indonesian lunch with the local beer at the water sports centre while waiting for them to return.

Lucky for them as dark clouds took over the blue sky just as they returned! Although Alex and i didn't do much, it's actually quite nice to do nothing actually. Haha.

Carpenter Bee @ Shikisai-no-oka (四季彩の丘) in Hokkaido [Japan]

Had been insanely busy with work, baking and being sick that i have totally neglected the postings for my Hokkaido trip! It's still not a full fledged post for my first flower field at Shikisai-no-oka (known as 四季彩の丘) but at least it's something....

I first noticed the buzzing sound when i walked past the patch of pink flowers and although this evoked bad memories of what happened in Bandung, curiosity got the better of me.

And it's a bee! Thankfully, i had been paying attention in meetings (can't help it as a minute-taker) and i do recognise this particular bee species!

A carpenter bee which seldom stings unless provoked and that's restricted to only the female carpenter bees! Hence, i muster up enough courage to inch slightly nearer for a better close-up photograph. Pretty, little fellow, ain't it?

However, the pain of the sting in my head and finger remained unforgettable and till this date, i would shake my head whenever i hear a buzzing sound; just in case a hornet / wasp / bee mistakes my head of hair for a nest again!

My First Airbnb Experience @ Furano [Hokkaido, Japan]

I was contemplating the tone i should set to talk about my virgin experience staying in an airbnb at Hokkaido and thought it's better to start with the conclusion: "I hate it!"

Now that it's out of my mouth, let me clarify that the problem might be myself as our two seasoned travel mates didn't see a problem whereas pampered me appeared to have been too accustomed to hotel accommodations all this while.

As you are probably aware, airbnb is homestay for travellers and would do well for people looking for a place with kitchen and feels like, well, home. Before my trip, i was already notified that i have to bring my own towel which honestly wasn't too much of a problem; i could take an old towel and then discard it the next day.

However, it was more than just the towel and i could easily blame my inexperience with airbnb. For one, check-in was at 4 pm and check-out was at 10 am. No friendly receptionist to answer your millions of questions and in my case, no lift to bring you to the second floor where the rooms were and the staircase was narrow and steep

Official floor plan for the second floor with four bedrooms; in total housing more than ten guests. Not exactly a conducive environment if all the bedrooms were to be taken. Why did i say so? To be continued in the next paragraph.

There's only one bathroom! Yes, only one bathroom and coming from a hot and humid country, we tend to have baths / showers twice a day and it didn't help that summer in Hokkaido can be pretty hot in the daytime. To minimize conflicts, the arrangement was to write down our preferred timings for showers / baths on a clipboard and every guest had to adhere to the self-imposed schedule.

I am so grateful that it wasn't full house for that one night stay at the airbnb and it's not the same situation for the toilets and the wash-up areas; there were a total of two toilet bowls and three vanity sinks.

Two vanity sinks and one toilet bowl was on the second floor (yes, technically to be shared among the more than ten of us in full airbnb capacity should anyone be too chicken to go down to the ground floor at night).

Next issue - there was supposed to be a heater mechanism for the water and we couldn't get it to run warm / hot water! Unlike a hotel where you can dial 0 for receptionist, there's no such option in an airbnb. However, we have the contact number of the host and it's still just a phone call away.

Turned out we just need to punch the knob shown in the photograph before the above and the gas would heat up the fire to warm your water! Interesting yet frightening at the same time.

My mouth and face can do without heated water to brush my teeth and wash my face but my body can't survive with showering in cold water, especially when Hokkaido's nights can still be chilly in summer! A phone call this time to the host didn't help and we had no choice but to wait for him to return from his work before we lined up to shower.

Have you slept in a Japanese futon before? It's my first time and i frankly didn't know what to make of the folded mattress with blanket and pillow.

I am accustomed to sleeping on a seahorse folded mattress back at my parents' place and it didn't take me long to unfurl the items for a badly needed sleep. Pillow was too soft for my liking too and i woke up the next morning with a bad neck-ache.

Unlike a hotel, you have to make your own bed in an air-bnb; so go ahead and fold up that futon nicely! According to our travel mates, the host can review the guests as well and most guests would do their best to tidy up the house before they leave! To be truthful, i will gladly pay the differential for a hotel so that i can leave the tidying to the housekeepers and give myself more time to explore the country.

Having ranted about the bad things, let's now talk about the advantages in staying at this airbnb; it's a typical Japanese dwelling with tatami mats and sliding wooden doors. No locks by the way.

You can squeeze in a number of guests with futons and you can't fight the price advantage that airbnb often have over hotels; i heard it's typically the fact in Japan where hotels can be insanely expensive in areas like Furano.

Don't you just love the Japanese style ceiling light with a hanging power cord?

The common living cum kitchen area (where the sole bathroom was located) was decently sized with seats available for more than ten persons to TV together! p.s. no provision of television in the room, which wasn't an issue for me.

Samurai swords on display!

You can basically cook your own meal if you want (and dare in case it's as difficult to operate the stove as it was with the water heater) and this kind of reminded me of my accommodation in Jeju; Galeum Guesthouse where my sister made french toast for breakfast!

Bowls, plates, mugs and cutlery were placed in this wooden cabinet.

Do remember to separate your rubbish according to what's labelled; it can be confusing at first but after a while, we got the hang of the classifications and it became a breeze in the next few days in Hokkaido.

Yes, WiFi was provided and you do have the option to wash your dirty laundry and make use of the dryer, for free!

Didn't quite matter for some of us as it was our first day in Hokkaido and the long hours spent on the plane and driving meant we were totally shagged out by the time we arrived at the airbnb. p.s. i still remain convinced that i would choose a hotel over an airbnb in the future.

Store Your Bulky Baggage While Transiting at Suvarnabhumi Airport for Over 12 Hours @ Bangkok [Thailand]

I got an extremely good deal for my air plane ticket to Hokkaido but there's a catch; i had to transit at Bangkok which wasn't that bad of an idea since i utterly missed the unassuming omelette rice at Pier 21!

Hence, i intentionally scheduled the departing flight to Singapore roughly 18 hours after our arrival in Bangkok so that we can stay a night for food indulgence with a session of traditional Thai massage at Urban Retreat!

The key consideration for the above plan to materialize was our luggage which was expected to be massive, considering it's our first trip to Japan and there were likely tons to buy! As you can see from the photograph, i didn't exaggerate.

There's no way i would lug the luggage over to our hotel in downtown Bangkok and that's when the baggage service at Suvarnabhumi Airport came into play!

It's not free but i am more than happy to pay a token sum to store the larger pieces of luggage so that my hands would be free to take the crowded airport rail link! As you can see, the rates were based on the size of the luggage and if i recall correctly, we paid 360 baht (about S$15) for two medium and one small.

Of course, there were terms and conditions with regard to the storage and as any seasoned traveller would tell you, don't keep your valuables in those storage; just to play safe. Procedures for storing and retrieval were pretty straightforward and for more information on the baggage service in the airport, click here

Beware of the Thieving Monkeys @ Uluwatu Temple [Bali]

There's an infamous monkey forest in Ubud, Bali and although i didn't get to visit it, i bet visitors can still get a preview by checking out Uluwatu temple, specifically the end of the long trail in the above photograph.

Honestly, i didn't feel that there were a lot of long-tailed macaques and thought the number was much higher along devil's bend in Singapore. However, unlike the peace-loving monkeys we get in Singapore, the ones in Bali have a different attitude.

Despite their supposed bored, nonchalant expression, they have the tendency to snatch / steal whatever they fancy; to the extent that a local actually forewarned me before my arrival. Why me?

Because the monkeys there love spectacles! That's not my glasses, by the way. They were not afraid of strangers; likely the result of humans giving food freely to them. That's why in Singapore, there's a hefty fine if you were found to feed the monkeys in the nature reserve.

In mere seconds, a bag of food appeared from nowhere and the naughty monkey appeared to deliberate if he should forgo one for the other; or to keep both! Being opportunistic, taking both would be the preferred option.

I don't understand their wide-eyed fascination for glasses! Not as if they were attempting to put them on their nose! I was just thankful it wasn't mine as i couldn't do without my spectacles!

Breathtaking view of the Uluwatu temple in the background.

The gentleman who lost his glasses to the monkey was lucky for two reasons; (1) someone threw the macaque a piece of fruit and it released the spectacles in its haste to catch it. (2) the pair of glasses almost fell down the cliff!

So rule of thumb - be careful of your belongings when you visit Uluwatu Temple and guard yourself against the thieving long tailed macaques!

My First Hokkaido Ice Cream @ Shikisai-no-oka (四季彩の丘) in Where Else But Hokkaido [Japan]

Almost every friend who returned from Hokkaido told me that the most impressionable food is the ice cream and they have reminded me numerous times that i must try it when i am there.

I didn't forget the advice (not with the constant reminders) and got my hands on one at the flower field; Shikisai-no-oka (四季彩の丘) .

In my excitement, i didn't even bother checking out the available varieties and immediately pointed towards the picture (above) at the cashier counter since it comprised of both ice cream and Hokkaido's famous rock melon!

At 500 yen (about S$6), there was no regret as the Hokkaido ice cream was insanely creamy with an intense milkiness that was to die-for! The cantaloupe was sweet, unlike some cases in Singapore where you need the sweetness of the ice cream to cover the blandness of the fruit.

Alex was so impressed; he got a vanilla soft serve at 300 yen! Obviously, we didn't regret the choice and happily indulged in the ice cream as we explored the farm. Almost got another one before we left but the machine had already closed for cleaning!

Menu as appended above should you drop by Shikisai-no-oka (四季彩の丘). Because of this first taste of Hokkaido ice cream, i had one almost every day when i was there!

Uluwatu Temple - The Sea Temple on the Cliff @ Bali [Indonesia]

Just like Bangkok, a first-time visitor to Bali would likely want to visit the numerous signature temples on the Indonesian island; i was no exception despite knowing nothing about them.

Today, i am going to touch on one of Bali's six key temples; Uluwatu Temple. Although not as famous as Tanah Lot, the scenery there was breathtaking! Shall show you more pictures shortly.

Do remember to buy your tickets from the counter; 30,000 rupiahs for each adult and 20,000 rupiahs for each child. Notice that blue signboard at the side? I didn't read then as i thought it wasn't in English! Turned out point 2 was in English and was a reminder for visitors to remove glasses, earrings, hats and caps. Why?

To guard them against the troop of thieving monkeys in the temple! There was another reminder right at the counter about the monkeys and other do's and dont's; to my face some more! That's the reason why i don't agree on too many notices and signages; people like me would just disregard them.

See, yet another one!

Entering the temple compound, which was huge by the way. Those wearing shorts, even the men, would be requested to hide their hairy legs using the sarongs that were available for free usage at the ticketing counter.

Weather wasn't hot and it's quite relaxing to walk along the wide, stone path that's flanked by trees. p.s. i am venturing in alone as my tour mates had an urgent need to use the washrooms.

At the end of the path was a large open-air courtyard with option to go either left or right.

Since i can see a lot more visitors on my left and there was that beautiful walkway bordering the cliff, i thought turning left would be a better choice. Nevertheless, i can check it out first and explore the right upon the arrival of my tour mates.

Pretty right?

The "strictly prohibited" sign. Knowing how adventurous some people can be (especially with the allure of attracting more likes on instagram), i can bet with you that the second rule would be constantly flouted.

Well, i presume the temple would be way higher as it would have made better sense; whether visually and religiously. However, i didn't seem to see any Balinese temple architecture on top...

Once i walked further, i can finally catch a peek of what appeared to be a fragment of the Balinese temple architecture; the three-tier roof of a structure that's right at the top of the cliff.

A closer look of the structure that's perched on top of the approximately 70-meter cliff!

Met up with my travel maters again and we decided to go to the right side of the courtyard. As weather was pretty good, the agreement was to explore the left side later on.

Climbing up the long flight of stairs!

Right at the end of the stairs was a gated compound with bold words loudly declaring that entry would be limited to worshipers only! That's really quite a bummer since there's an admission fee that we had paid for.

However, i can understand the frustration if i am the local and have to face the cameras-touting, noisy tourists when all i want is to pray in peacefulness.

So, i did to the best of my ability; a shot of the temple compound through the gates. Just a basic information on the temple - it was estimated to be built more than a thousand years ago with expansion throughout the years!

Those wanting a close-up shot can do so with the above that's near to the temple and open to the public. I am wondering; the material used for the roof was coconut husk? Can't be animal hair right?

Decided to take another route to descend from the cliff and got into a single-storey building that opened up to the amazing view to the side of the cliff. That guy relaxing by the "window" had taken a great spot to check his phone!

So many people were taking their own sweet time to capture the view behind them! Can't blame them for being so inconsiderate as i might have done the same thing.

Here's Alex with the landscape behind him!

Wasn't it stunning!? A thought ran through my mind; should anyone survive a fall down the cliff, how would he be able to get back up? The waves were so strong and there wasn't a path / stair going down to the bottom of the cliff.

Putting my foot here would be my limit as i have a fear for height and i doubt i can survive the fall. As you get older, you tend to get apprehensive about doing things with a likelihood to threaten your life; not because i am afraid of death. I am just fearful of the situation that i don't die and have to suffer for a prolonged period of time.

Not sure what the sign means; guess it's related to rubbish?

Knowing myself, i would definitely want to trek all the way to the end of the path but i am not just travelling with Alex (whom i can bully into accompanying me). I had to consider the rest of my travel mates too.

Surprisingly, they were enthusiastic and to be totally honest, much more motivating than Alex whose main aim at overseas destination was to sleep in the hotel. =_=

Temple structure at the edge of the cliff; i took like dozens of similar photographs and would select a few to be published in this post.

The undulating terrain.

It had already started drizzling at this point and this had resulted in raindrops on my lens that i didn't realize until later! Hence, do excuse me for the quality of the photographs which, to be honest, wasn't too bad as it added a different layer of beauty to the place.

A few jutting-out platforms provided opportunities for more photo-taking for your narcissistic selves. Selfie sticks were not banned, unlike drones!

Strong, strong waves!

Ocean in front of us, with nothing in the horizon! Quite a relaxing view, especially when the wind was blowing into our faces. If i were the king, i would likely build a palace here.

Since i am no king, i shall be satisfied with just the sheltered pavilion ahead of us. In actual fact, we needed a roof over our head as the rain drops appeared bigger at this point!

Way we had walked so far.

Reaching the end of the path - we reached at about 3.00 pm but i would have recommended visitors to visit the place at around sunset as the entire stretch of the cliff faces the west. Pity the period we went Bali was plagued with rather rainy weather and sunset wasn't available through the three nights we were there.

The end. Nope, not yet the end of this post though! Anyway, did you spot the numerous creatures in the picture? It's the same animal that i wrote of earlier in this post.

Monkeys although their real official office would be long-tailed macaques! Common even in Singapore, the ones here were of a different nature. Check out this post for more information on my encounter with them.

Photographs showing the entire stretch of cliff leading to the temple and the temple itself. Wondering why i don't have many panoramas? Have a feel and would append them towards the end of this post.

On our way back as the rain showed no sign of stopping and we wanted to prevent a situation of getting stuck there for an indefinite period of time!

Not to mention as well that we didn't have raincoat and only one travel mate remembered to carry an umbrella! Tsk tsk, i should drill into my 37-year old brain that i must remember to have one small brolly in my bag whenever i travel.

Imagine your back lying on the metal fence and it gave way!
A scary thought for an over-imaginative mind.

Last photograph of the iconic temple structure.

Took another side route and chanced upon the above. For a moment, i thought monkeys were highly regarded to have a monument built for them.

Upon a closer look did i realize that the statue on top appeared to be fighting the monkeys. Looked like a person who had his stuff stolen by the thieving monkeys of Uluwatu

Heavy rain started pelting halfway through and i ran all the way to the ticketing counter where i returned my purple sarong! You know what's the funny thing? In my haste for shelter, I slipped and fell on the tiled flooring! So embarrassing!

Panoramas, as promised, taken by my iPhone.

Song Kee Special @ Song Kee Fishball Noodle House in Thomson Plaza [Singapore]

I am craving for noodles these few days and was gearing to fix my craving this afternoon at Thomson Plaza (also known as the old Thomson Yaohan for those around my age, or older).

Song Kee Fishball Noodle House caught my attention and i thought i should give it a try just so i can compare it with my favourite Li Xin fishball noodle stall.

Didn't look like your typical fishball noodle? This was because i opted for their Song Kee Special which comprised of fishball, meatball, fish dumpling and fried dumplings!

At $6 a bowl, it was rather pricey although i did get quite a variety of ingredients. Furthermore, pricing at shopping malls for typical local hawker fare has always been on a high side and can double what you normally pay for in a non-air-conditioned hawker centre.

Noodle was al dente and drenched with a concoction of chilli and vinegar whereas my personal preference was more the chilli and tomato sauce combination. Fishball was actually pretty normal and i had better words for the tasty meatball which appeared handmade and the fish dumpling that had soft yet flavourful inside.

Overall not too bad, especially when i was given more than just fishball. However, my heart still longs for li xin fishball. Maybe having a generous topping of crispy pork lard on the noodle at Song Kee would help?
