The Eyes In The Sky above Bandung City @ Indonesia

$

It's no secret that i love taking photographs and my favourite spot is up in the air, within an aeroplane; that sensation of being on top of cottony clouds and peering down on land mass dotted with miniature structures across vast greenery broken only by bodies of water and mountains and hills is simply put, indescribable!

As i can't have a good sleep on the plane (not with the economy class ticket that i could barely afford), i spent a lot of time looking out of the window and since cameras nowadays have digital storage, i happily clicked away.

The issue with being trigger happy is that i often have too many pictures that i couldn't all upload in any of my travel itineraries. It's a serious problem for me as i tried not to 'waste' my effort; hence, i decided to create a new label called "The Eyes In The Sky".

I am not going to backdate all the pictures taken so far on my overseas travel (the ones that required a plane ride) and the first posting shall be the place where i recently visited; Bandung City

Now, Earth is 70% covered with water and unless i have supersonic eyes that enable me to see what goes on under the water, i am very much happier when i see land.

Flying over Bandung City; i love technology as i can corroborate what i have taken with google maps! See that patch of greenery that looks like a keyhole? That's apparently a monument known as bandung lautan api (Bandung Sea of Fire)!

Don't you think that Indonesia's third largest city is nicely structured and tidy from high above? Surprisingly, there weren't a lot of tall buildings although i might be unfair in my comparison since Singapore is one of the most densely populated countries in the world and i remember a time when the little red dot had the highest number of skyscrapers!

Indonesia is a lot bigger and as an urbanite, i totally love the sights of modern structures side by side with agricultural land and untouched mountains / hills.

There's no way you can have this in Singapore!

More photographs for your viewing pleasure as i honestly don't know where i was at; the plane was asked to delay landing and it was just flying all over the city. If only i had brought along my Olympus camera as it has a GPS function!

About to land after about fifteen minutes of wait; i should be able to see the Best Western Premier La Grande hotel from here as i can also see the same iconic bridge (center left of the first picture and centre of the second picture) from my room.

Cannot imagine i missed out the patch of green lung on the left as it appeared to be a rather large cemetery! Further checks revealed that it is the Ereveld Pandu Dutch Cemetery! Maybe i should check it out in my next visit given how close it is to the airport.

Bandung Indah Plaza (Opposite Best Western Premier La Grande Hotel) @ Bandung [Indonesia]

In my review of Best Western Premier La Grande hotel at Bandung, i mentioned that it was right across Bandung Indah Plaza (known as BIP to the locals) and the above depicts the actual proximity!

I decided to generate a blogpost on the mall as i couldn't find much information when i was researching on the hotel's surrounding and thought this entry might come in handy for those who eventually chose Best Western as their choice of accommodation.

Personally, i thought BIP was more like the KSL mall at Johore Bahru yet without the insanely massive crowd that descends on it every weekend by locals and Singaporeans.

Outlets wise, you get a rather good range from fashion, health and beauty, accessories, electronics / gadgets, eyewear, sports and apparels to food & beverages.

My first stop was actually the hypermarket to check out pricing on products that might be sold in Singapore and also to see if there are any local items not commonly seen in Singapore! The cartoon character bottles (Mulan, Ariel, Cinderella, i think) above were actually Aqua water sold at 3,850 rupiah a bottle.

Whenever i travel, i would always bring along a few sachets of Old Town White Coffee but i forgot this time! Resigning to the fate that i might be coffee deprived for the next few days, it was a nice surprise to see packs of Old Town White Coffee in the hypermarket. Problem is; it was sold at more than S$10 a pack! In Singapore, it wouldn't cost more than S$6.50 a pack!

Matahari - a well known department store in Indonesia that's comparable to Metro / OG in the past. The one here at BIP was a three-floor outlet and i remember going through lady fashion, menswear and perfume and cosmetics; think i miss a floor.

Things were a bit dated and didn't attract much attention from us even though mom spent quite a long time at the shoe section. I waited so long; i decided on a timing to meet them at the entrance so that i can walk around the shopping centre by myself!

There's a timezone on the upper level where you can spend some fun time with your kids. I am unsure on the pricing for the rides and arcade games although i guess it wouldn't be as much as what we are paying back home!

For hyperactive kids, dump them at the playground where they can totally expend their energy for just one fee for a specific period of time.

My sisters and i would love to try out the KTV given our love for karaoke (check out postings on Manekineko, Party World, Teo Heng and Kbox). However, we were worried that the song list would be exclusively Bahasa Indonesian!

Cinema XXI - Indonesia's largest cinema network can also be found in BIP! Underworld: Blood Wars was screening and i just asked for the pricing of one ticket; it was a Thursday and the pricing was 25,000 rupiah (less than S$3)!

There was a ton of dining establishments for you to choose from; Singaporeans of a certain age can walk down memory lane by dining at A&W! We wanted something more local and opted for Baso by Mister Baso instead. Click here to check out my review.

Millipede Outside the Office

$

I was investigating the mystery of droplets of red stain on the floor outside my office when i spotted something crawling past me!

The elongated body should have totally freaked me out but from the corner of my eye where i caught the movement, i noted it was rather small with hairline legs that moved in synchronized motion; a millipede.

At least in Singapore, i have not seen the arthropod for ages and for that initial moment, was wondering if it was a centipede! Knowing that the millipede would not likely survive in such an open area, the kind-hearted soul in me proceeded to pick it up; as part of its natural instinct, it immediately curled into a coil, an action said to protect their delicate legs.

I put it in the soil of a nearby planter. On second thought, i should have hidden it underneath some foliage as our area was regularly visited by birds! Oh well, the human kind intervention doesn't always result in a good ending.

Honolulu Cafe (檀島香港茶餐厅) from Hongkong now at Centrepoint [Singapore]

Opened for operations slightly more than half a year ago, those who love travelling to Hongkong should not be stranger to the popular HK tea chain known for its famous egg tarts!

On the Honolulu Cafe Singapore's Facebook page, it's hard not to notice the low star rating with a respectable 136 reviews; most of which centred on bad customer service. I agree that the service was lacking but not horrendous in our visit a week ago; nevertheless, there was still plenty of room for improvement.

However, i would hesitate to bring my family as they allocate a much higher priority to service when it comes to food. For me, food is more important and i thought pricing was rather reasonable given its fame and location within a shopping mall along Orchard road.

Milk Tea - i have never been keen in Hongkong style hot beverages and always prefer the teh and kopi from our local kopitiams. As expected, i didn't like the milk tea; it was thin and tasted siap. Nothing like the milky, aromatic richness from our local teh with milk.

French Toast - the type of French toast i absolutely adore; it was nicely cut up into four pieces which means a bigger surface area to indulge in that addictive egg batter topped with butter and sweet syrup!

Are you the type of diner who hates to find an empty middle when you dig into French toast?! I am and i was secretly pleased to find a buttery middle when i sliced through the soft toast; simple pleasures of life. :P

Pork Chop Bun - just the other day, i was complaining about the pork chop bun from Tai Lei Lok Kei and i thought my love for the signature Portuguese bun would be lost for good. It didn't take long to rekindle the love although it was a pork chop bun from another dining establishment; yes, the one at honolulu cafe!

Bread was toasted to a crisp and the entire combination was just perfect; the sweetness of the bread, the juicy savouriness from the pork, the freshness of just-about-the-right-amount-of lettuce and that thin layer of mayonnaise.  Don't belittle the salad at the side; it was as delicious as the cold platter prawn salad served in Chinese weddings, sans the prawns.

Pineapple Bun - Another bun but one that i would try as there was a period of time i literally lived in the boluo (another word for pineapple) buns from Crystal Jade! Now, let's check out the one from the cafe.

Like the french toast, there was a buttery middle even though the quantity was a lot more; my friend complained it wasn't salty enough while i was quite comfortable with what i had. As a whole, it didn't disappoint with a big and nice flaky top and a fluffy bottom.

Egg Tart - the icon of Honolulu cafe; i think Asian styled tarts are the recent fad in Singapore. In addition to Honolulu cafe, there was also the craze on hokkaido cheese tarts, the tai cheong egg tarts in just 2016 alone! Said to boast 192 layers, my taste buds are not refined enough to taste the differences in the pastry bowl housing the wobbly egg custard.

It was flaky alright yet i was more taken aback by the fact that the pastry wasn't overwhelming despite the number of layers! Many a time, i actually discarded excessive pastry in exchange for a better egg-pastry ratio. The egg middle appealed to me (and likely my mom) as it wasn't overly sweet and in all, the egg tart actually tasted pretty good, especially when served hot.

Branded Factory Outlet Shopping - Rumah Mode, Secret, For Men, Heritage & Others @ Bandung [Indonesia]

$

0
Factory outlet shopping is a big thing at Bandung in Indonesia and for those who thought the experience is similar to the polo ralph outlets at Batam / Bintan; let me tell you that it's not even on the same level!

There were the standalone branded outlets which i didn't quite like as the deals were similar to Singapore (at IMM, Changi City Point etc) and my affection lies with the bigger scale outlet stores which can span over a few floors with a wide range of brands.

I didn't go to ALL of them in my recent trip as the number was just mind boggling although i did manage to check out the more famous ones like Rumah Mode, Heritage, Secret and a few others. Listed below are the outlets i went to and a short review from the angle of a man who doesn't really shop much.

The Secret Factory Outlet
My very first factory outlet shopping in Bandung which means my excitement will translate into a secret (pun unintended) mission to take number of pictures for the purpose of this blog.

As you probably deduce, the interior design doesn't deviate much from a typical department store, albeit less the opulence and more the need to stack as much stock as possible to accommodate the different sizes for the attire.

Walk further in to a sheltered courtyard where uninterested family members and friends could sit to wait for their shopaholics mates to finish their shopping. I could identify one such person from my family; my dad who literally doesn't shop for his clothes.

Fret not if you feel bad for those waiting for you to try out the gazillion pieces of clothes; there's a kiosk where desserts and snacks can be purchased.

To free up more time to reduce your guilt for letting them wait, opt for the massage services! You may choose from 30 minutes to 60 minutes and a reflexology for 60 minutes cost just 75,000 rupiah (less than S$10)!

At the back of Secret was the kids' section; i couldn't quite grasp the size of the Jovyn and Jerald as they have grown quite a bit over the years and i had to leave the shopping to the good hands of their mother.

Not being brand conscious and fashionable; i am quite boring in my selection and focused only on tee shirts and maybe polo t-shirt. Unlike the ladies, i browsed really quickly although i spent a lot more time trying the clothes.

My haul at Secret and according to my credit card statement, my bill (including two pieces for my mom not in the above picture) was 1.219 million baht (S$132.19).

Map of Secret

As above.

The Oasis Clothing Outlet
Just a short distance away from Secret was The Oasis Clothing Outlet! The two words were missing but according to google, it is the same one.

Scale was much smaller the Secret and nothing attracted my attention except for a wide range of hard rock cafe tees. My mum and sisters were inside quite long though so i figured there must be quite a bit of design and styles.

You can even get Louis Vuitton baggage from The Oasis Clothing Outlet! Now, people have asked me whether branded factory outlets equate to fake goods; answer is they came from legitimate factories contracted by the brands to manufacture the products and the ones sold in factory outlets are the rejected goods. By rejected, it could mean the factory has either manufactured too many pieces (production overruns) or that the products didn't pass the quality control checks.

Map of The Oasis

As above

Heritage Factory Outlet
You would not miss the neoclassical facade of Heritage factory outlet and compared to Secret, it was more crowded. Maybe it also helped that there was a food court right beside the outlet.

A two-floor building, i was utterly bored on the ground floor as it was more ladies / kids stuff and i told my family that i would loiter on my own. As both Joyce and i have mobile roaming, our plan was to give each other two missed calls once either party was done and then to meet at the entrance.

Surprise, surprise; Joyce was the one who missed called me as i was too overwhelmed with what i found on the second floor which was decked out in menswear! There was this "third day" brand of tee shirts that i really like and i kept trying all the available designs.

Following my sentence on rejected goods under "the oasis clothing outlet", our aim as a shopper in Bandung was to pray hard that our purchases were as a result of production overruns. However, you may wish to double check on your products before payment in case it falls under the category of not meeting quality checks.

My damage at Heritage, paid out in cash.

Connected to Heritage factory outlet is Cascade; whatever you want to buy at Heritage should be paid before you venture to Cascade and vice versa. At Cascade, i immersed myself in the brands like Svperbia and Reclays with an eventual damage of 315,000 rupiah mainly because the size i needed wasn't available in the patterns i liked.

Map of Heritage

As above. Cascade is right next door, connected to Heritage.

Merdeka Arcade Factory Outlet
Located within a few minutes' walk from Best Western Premier La Grande hotel, this particular factory outlet was well visited by my mom for its convenience!

Tell you a secret - she was ever the last customer in the building and there were over twenty staff waiting for her to make payment so that they can finally close shop! Mum would have happily taken her time, if not for the ceiling lights that were progressively switched off.

Anyway, designs appeared to from a lower end as seen on the ground floor even though i could be wrong as i didn't venture to the upper floors.

I was amused by the branded paper bags on sale and recollected a period of time in Singapore when brand conscious individuals would carry such bags out when they go to upmarket places like Orchard road.

ForMen Factory Outlet
Most factory outlets catered to the fairer sex (for good reasons) and this was one of a few exclusively for the gentlemen; i think i could spend hours inside but we didn't have much time.

Aside from your typical shirts, tees and jeans, there were also branded suits for sale and for those who couldn't stomach the price of a Bally bag sold for more than S$500 apiece at the main Bally store, it's priced at about S$200 at For Men.

Episode Fashion House
Chanced upon this place as we walked from Amanda Brownies to Kartikasari and decided to venture in despite our lack of time as it was the last day of our journey and we had to clear the hotel room by 1pm! Time then was 10.30am.

I stayed outside to look after our belongings while the ladies explored the factory outlet. Thinking they would be out in no time, i was wrong in my assumption and immediately took the opportunity to ask my mom to look over the belongings when she just happened to be in my sight!

The place was huge; hence explaining why my siblings were not out yet! As usual, the men section was on level two and i happily spent some time at the underwear section which was rather extensive. Top-wise, i think i had bought way too many!

Rumah Mode Factory Outlet
Translated as Fashion House in Bahasa Indonesia, Rumah Mode (mode is pronounced mo-dei), this was the crème de la crème for Bandung's factory outlets with Jakarta residents making a beeline for it on weekends!

Architecture was Balinese i guess and there's a relaxed atmosphere in the outdoors. It did help that the weather then was pretty cloudy and there was a gentle breeze; no sweat!

Signage navigating clueless visitors like us.

I regretted having pepper lunch at Paris Van Java as there was a big food court at Rumah Mode with ample selections to meet the entire family's taste buds!

Knowing my mom was literally tired out by the endless shopping, i suggested signing her up for a foot massage at Tao Reflexology right above the food court.

Price list as above; do keep in mind to add three zeros at the back of each price. For example, a one-hour foot massage cost 68,000 rupiah, not 68 rupiah.

I didn't partake in that relaxing activity as i was keener with therapeutic shopping! Customer service was top-notch at Rumah Mode; they would eagerly help me rummaged through the stack of clothes for the size i preferred instead of brushing me off. Only problem was that i visited on a Sunday and it was packed with people!

Showing this for the second or third time as i was so happy with my purchases of 1.544 million rupiah consisting of tees, boxers, bermuda shorts, beach shorts and sweaters! My biggest haul in the entire trip!

Standalone Branded Outlet
As mentioned in the beginning of this post, there were differences to factory outlets and standalone factory outlets. I stepped into a few notable ones as they happened to be along the way near Episode Fashion House when we walked from Amanda Brownies to Kartikasari.

Polo Ralph Lauren - unlike their Bintan / Batam counterparts, i could feel the superior quality of the shirts' material and was tempted to increase my already excessive expenditure for this trip.

Marc & Stuart - selling shoes and sandals, i am unaware of this brand and went in purely out of curiosity; eventually got a pair of nice sandals for about SS$10.

Nike Factory Store - entered because i can recognise the brand although it's been a while since i last had any Nike products in my house.

I didn't find the items cheaper than Singapore but it may be fairer for Nike fans to make a better judgment call. See that turquoise top? Original price was 599,000 rupiah and it was discounted to 340,000 rupiah.

Shoes were generally over S$100.

Adidas Outlet - i prefer casual shoes over sports shoes and thought i can finally replace the ones i have at home; assuming at that point that pricing would be substantially cheaper than Singapore!

Original price; 1.599 million rupiah and discounted to almost 1.19 million. Converted to more than S$120, it's way beyond my budget of less than S$100 since i wear out my shoes rather fast.

=====

18 tops, 5 bottoms, 2 underwear with 3 pairs of slippers / sandals not show in the above picture. While i had a healthy haul from the Bandung trip and was looking forward to my next visit, my siblings and mom were restrained in their purchases as they didn't quite like the fashion style and pattern of what's available.

Christmas 2016 - Unwrapping the Presents!

$

Happy Boxing Day!

I was all prepared to cover the annual Christmas lighting at Orchard Road but laziness had set in together with an insatiable appetite for sleep after my trip to Bandung earlier this month.

It feels weird not to have any posting on the day of gifting and even though it might appear to be cheating, i am showing the expression of Jovyn and Jerald as they unwrapped the presents i got for them!

Even when i was a kid, i couldn't resist unveiling the item(s) covered with boxes and papers; that curious sense of anticipation as the little fingers picked through the scotch tape / double-sided tape holding the paper.

Frustration kicked in after a while and it was quicker to just poke a hole in the wrapping paper and tearing it apart!

That look of joy was the ultimate present for the giver, especially one who dislikes buying presents as there are often too many thought process; what they like, what's the current trend, are the things i bought too cheap etc?

They weren't even expensive to begin with; two packs of kinder bueno eggs featuring Jovyn's favourite Frozen characters! Okay, i think that movie is a bit passe now but she still likes Elsa, Anna and Olaf!

The older brother looked on as the younger sister expressed her surprise at his gift; a pack of kinder bueno eggs with elements from Zootopia!

Since the kinder bueno eggs don't cost much, i actually prepared another present for each of them. In the past, i used to ask the kids what they wanted but this supposedly kind gesture turned into a "i want this, i want that" behavior which i thought isn't right.

Well, they seemed pleased with what was given although Jerald was happier with his Poke ball that my sister bought for him earlier.

We have discussed on the gifts that i prepared for the kids; now's my turn to unwrap the presents given by friends and colleagues! I don't know about you but i have reached the age where presents are secondary to company and this year, i have had a few special arrangements where friends met up for a get-together meal with no gift exchange!

Presents unwrapped - many thanks to all of you for the thoughtful gifts! If you are reading this, remember that i always treasure a good meetup where we bond and laugh over meals! :)

By the way, try not to tear away the wrappers as i did; one friend wrote messages in the inside of the paper and i almost threw it away! The one who wrote friendship as friend followed by the logo of a boat. Thankfully i am smart enough to get the meaning! Haha.

Instructions on How to Use the Urinal (For Men Only) @ Bandung [Indonesia]

$

There are many advantages to overseas travel and my personal favourite is to experience the cultural differences between the host and home country; how things we take for granted in Singapore is not necessarily processed in the same way in the country we travel to.

A usual pee session at a urinal in the male toilet (@ Bandung Airport) would not have me noticing the sticker but it was placed right in front me, at my eye level and i thought i might as well make use of the "time" to read the content; half suspecting the words would be in Bahasa Indonesian which i don't understand.

English translation was in yellow and the subject was "how to use the urinoir". By urinoir, i gathered it's the urinal but why the hell would a man need to be taught on how to use it?! Furthermore, there's nothing on the instruction telling us to, well, unzip, take out the necessary organic tool and aim "it" correctly!

p.s. i think the key takeaway is to ask the users to flush the urinals. In this case, the first step asking them to face the urinals can be removed. Men may not be as smart as the ladies but i am sure we are aware that we have to face the urinal when we pee.

I'm Kim Korean BBQ @ School of the Arts [Near Singapore's Dhoby Ghaut MRT Station] #imkimkoreanbbq

The first time i patronised I'm Kim Korean BBQ, my friends noticed i bear an uncanny resemblance to the cartoonised life-sized cutout of the boss and insisted taking a picture of me beside it so that they can ask for discount!

Of course it didn't work although the buffet was memorable enough for me to return a few weeks later; bringing along my younger sister and mum.

Before you step in to the premise, do keep in mind that there is a specific duration given for diners; according to the facebook page, it's 90 minutes for a group of 3 or less. Hence, if you are a slow eater, give this a miss!

As usual, please don't take more than what you can eat as it will just exacerbate the food wastage problem in Singapore. If you don't care, wastage charge shall be at a fair S$20 per 100 grams.

What's Available?!

The most important question for any buffet veterans, secondary to maybe the taste test - a lousy spread would have reduced the allure although my pet peeve when it comes to buffet is that i have to pay extra for drink other than plain water.

At I'm Kim, i was given free flow korean barley tea, lime juice, mango juice and water chestnut! Warm water is available on a per-request basis.

Small side dish / condiment / sauce counter - there were salad, sliced tomatoes, corn cobs but i don't pay money to be a vegetarian in a bbq buffet restaurant. Nevertheless, i enjoyed the sweetness of the watermelon for dessert. The seasoned baby octopuses were quite popular on our table too.

Section that i generally ignored except for the relatively fresh and good-sized prawns, onions and garlic! Health conscious individuals (like those who will go for salad) can go for the golden mushrooms, radish, pumpkin, kimchi and fresh lettuce.

The long stretch of food as seen above is divided into three categories (soup, cooked food and raw food) and i shall go through them shortly.

I am going to start with my least favourite - soup and there were four kinds to choose from; Korean ginseng chicken (the brain booster), seaweed (the oceanic treasure), collagen (youth elixir) and mushroom (little health giant).

Aside from the fanciful name that gives some hints on the respective soup's nutritional benefits, more information can actually be found on the mini signs.

Both mom and sister took quite a few bowls - actions of which i deduced they must be happy with the soups. I took a sip of the ginseng chicken; it was flavourful and didn't taste watered down.

Raw food with ten kinds - short beef ribs, marinated rib-eyes, beef rolls, chuck tender beef, garlic chicken, volcano chicken, pork collar, spicy pork collar, bacon and pork belly.

Mum doesn't take beef although i was happy with the signature volcano chicken and spicy pork collar! Just to add as well that in my first visit, i had already attacked the marinated beef options and were fully satisfied with them!

Cooked food section was left for the last as i was utterly impressed with what i had. If i didn't count wrongly, i think there were eight pots and they were worth a try! You don't have to take a lot; just one piece / portion just to check out the taste and come back for more if you like it.

The food was replenished frequently even though in event of a huge meal crowd, hungry diners had the tendency to grab as much as they could. However, please keep in mind the wastage charges.

Sushi is a no-no as the carbohydrates would fill up your tummy fast! Well, this didn't apply to my two family members to grab a few as they just have to eat rice. Typical Chinese! By the way, the sushi was decent.

Japanese sweet potatoes were pretty good with sprinklers of white and black sesame seed; i prefer the potatoes to have a mushier texture though.

Kimchi pancake was restaurant standard (so much kimchi) and i couldn't imagine i had to pay S$12 for a portion that could hardly feed me when i could get free flow at I'm Kim!

Tapioca delight is a must-try! Leave them to the last as a dessert since tapioca is also carbohydrate! Aim for the more expensive meat first.

The aptly-named irresistible wings were just too addictive! In my opinion, the chicken wings are the hottest in the buffet restaurant and it's common to find the tray empty as they get snapped up real quickly!

On The Table
Free tissue paper dispenser! This is one nifty thing from Korea that all Singapore's restaurants should have on every table!

Well, in case you don't know how to eat BBQ the Korean way. I am not stranger to the Korean style but i would do that only in a non-buffet Korean BBQ restaurant.

What we took from the counters / sections - these comprised of just a fraction of what we had that day. I think the above shows maybe about 10-15%? Despite the crowd, the service staff were attentive and would clear the plates so long as they were empty.

The grill - no other comment as it serves its purpose in barbecuing my food. Please be prepared for the bbq 'aroma' to be stuck on your clothes; bring extra set of top if you need to go somewhere else after the makan session.

Even though we had to adhere to the 90-minute duration given to us and was more than halfway through, this didn't stop the service staff from suggesting a change in the grill when he noticed it was getting charred. That, to me, is good service.

Day One of My 5 Days, 4 Nights Itinerary to Bandung, the Paris of Java @ Indonesia

It has been a while since i last woke up so early to take the flight; to be exact, it was 4 am when alarm rang and by the time i wheeled my luggage to my parents' place to hail a cab, it was about 5.10 am.

Boy was Changi Airport crowded with people dropping off at the departure floor and it wasn't even 6 am! I was more concerned with the rain as it could result in flight delays.

Terminal 2 - we had arranged to meet up with Joyce (who doesn't live in Yishun) at the airport directly and she had not arrived then. To be fair, our time-to-meet- was 6 am, two hours before the plane was scheduled to take off.

She was late and we proceeded with the printing of luggage tags ourselves so that we can check them in to the plane first. Passengers' check in had already been confirmed online by Louise, official planner for the trip.

Make It Your Singapore - even as a local, i was drawn by the words to check out what's the above about. There's a reason why Changi Airport is often voted the world's best and it's creative touches like this that impress.

An icon for you to guess what it is and for you to turn it around to find the answers - in this case, "quality of a restaurant is directly related to the length of the queue - a mathematical equation that holds true in food-obsessed Singapore". I beg to differ as my personal opinion is that the equation holds true for about 75% of the time; one classic example is here

The Boeing 737-800 SilkAir plane bringing us to the Paris of Java - MI 192.

Getting ready the boarding pass and passport - with the increasing popularity to print your own boarding passes from the self service kiosks, my only grouch is that the paper texture is no longer as good as before and we couldn't keep it very long for memory sake; the ink tends to fade out.

Boarding the plane - i couldn't remember the layout of the Silk Air plane i took the last time which was more than ten years ago but this time, i noted similarities in the layout with planes from budget airlines!

However, the tickets for SilkAir flights don't cater to the booming budget market and there are differences from the budget airlines that made up for the price differentials - like complimentary newspapers, provision of wet tissue, meals etc.

I was more appalled to find an empty screen in front of my seat - i derived much happiness from catching recent blockbusters when i am on full-service airline and this was a major disappointment.

With the proliferation of portable media devices, it's not too hard to download and catch some dramas / movies using iPad, iPhone and even mum made do with the lack of a personal in-flight entertainment system by making use of the slot in front as a holder for the iPad. p.s. there's actually a wireless inflight entertainment system called SilkAir Studio provided by SilkAir and you may click here for more information.

Announcement was made on the delay as luggage was still being loaded up to the plane; i could actually see my sister's luggage in that container.

Waiting in queue as it's the busy December period!

A shot of us three siblings in the family; Korea was the last time the teo siblings travelled together and that was also the time i got into a car accident.

With rain still drizzling down from the sky, it's finally "our turn" to take off from the runway!

Up and away - i think i can slowly track the development of the new terminal five if i continue to travel like a few times a year in the next few years.

View of Singapore from high up in the sky! I think i can already compile a pretty big album of all the aerial pictures taken whenever i took a plane out of Singapore.

My fried rice with spicy chicken that's sprinkled with a ton of fried shallots! It was overall comfort food to the tummy even though my love had to be that mini loaf of deliciously sweet and warm bread.

Appearance of a land a few thousand feet below would only mean we were nearing the destination! Want to see more photographs of Bandung City from the eyes in the sky, check out here!

Runway of Husein Sastranegara (BDO) airport - it may seem that i was at the cockpit when the photo was taken; unfortunately, i didn't have such privilege and it was shot when airplane took a 90-degree turn to get off the main passage.

Traffic control tower for the airport - it reminded me of another commercial airport in Singapore which is seldom used by many; Seletar Airport!

Firefighting unit - a necessity for any airport!

Main building - as the main aerial gateway to the third largest city in Indonesia, i am surprised to find a relatively small airport. Always make a mental note on the airports that you would be departing from on your last day. In cases where i know i would have nothing to do, i would not likely arrive earlier to check in.

No aero-bridge which was good as i can take a better picture of the plane we took! I am unsure if it is okay to take pictures while on the runway as Singapore is rather sticky; i remember being told off at the now-closed budget terminal which didn't have aero bridges.

Waiting for our luggage at the only luggage belt in the airport!

Bought the ticket from the taxi counter - unlike in places like Bangkok, the counter is legit and can be purchased right before you wheel your luggage out of the arrival hall.

Crossed the road where a long line of blue taxis were waiting; pass your receipt to anyone of them and off you proceed to your designated destination.

Airport main building - it was as long as you can see. There was some renovation and i hope by the time i revisit, there would be a lot more things for me explore.

Best Western Premier La Grande hotel appeared about 15 minutes into the taxi journey; for the review on our choice of accommodation in Bandung, click here.

Since we arrived too early for room check in and there were plenty of time to spare, we decided to leave our luggage with the hotel concierge and explored the shopping centre opposite the hotel; Bandung Indah Plaza!

Super narrow staircase to the overhead bridge; i could have crossed the road as a jaywalker but as a new visitor to the city, it's better to play safe first.

Jalan Merdeka - it's a skill to cross the roads in Bandung and i would envision it to be quite similar to Vietnam. Drivers were generally quite alert and would actually give way to you. As a jaywalker, exercise the same alertness and no matter what happen, don't backtrack!

A separate post on Bandung Indah Plaza can be found here. We also had lunch at Mister Baso on the ground level of the shopping mall where i had my first bowl of bakso; one of Indonesia's national dishes!

Finally checked in to the superior room at Best Western Premier La Grande hotel and was blessed to have been given a room with a fantastic view!

After taking a much needed bath while my roommate took a nap (she can really doze off anywhere), it's time to hit the street. Above shows street vendors selling live animals, including wildlife like snakes and owls. For more photos, click here.

Distinctive building with a rotating windmill on top that housed the Holland Bakery; i stepped in on the last night and bought a slice of bika ambon. The ones at Batam and Medan were better.

Trishaw at Bandung; passengers would be facing the traffic whereas the rider would be riding right behind. It decreases the space required on the road and passengers would be given the advantage of having unblocked view, if it matters.

Riau junction - another shopping centre although it was very much smaller in scale compared to Bandung Indah Plaza. Nevertheless, we actually had dinner there later that evening as it's along the way back.

Mobile street vendors carrying money-making wares on their shoulder - i am curious to know how they cook but i am hesitant to try out street food as my stomach is highly sensitive and i don't want to spoil my vacation.

Tree with bulging, exposed roots.

There were numerous stores encountered in the over 10-minute walk even though we didn't step in to a single one as we were focused in what we want; Bandung's famous factory outlets

Helium balloons for sale.

Instead of recyclables and non-recyclables bins, there were organic and non-organic ones. Honestly, it's less confusing and i know exactly where to try my rubbish.

My virgin factory outlet shopping starts at Secret and i was totally mesmerized by the wide range of men clothing! I have in fact generated a full post on factory outlet shopping in Bandung and you may visit here for more information on the outlets i visited in the five days i was there.

On the street again with a few photographs showing some of the shops we walked past yet didn't enter / browse through as we were hoping to reach the next factory outlet on our agenda; Heritage

Passion Factory Outlet looked good with busloads of tourists and i thought this could be another place to patronise right after Heritage. Sadly, we spent too much time at Heritage and Cascade, its immediate neighbour!

Being a jaywalker is a common affair at Bandung.

Arrival at the iconic Heritage; there was a food market (food court) beside the factory outlet and i would have chosen it for dinner except for one reason. There was insufficient lighting at night!

I thought i was finally done at Heritage and could have an early dinner. But the allure of Cascade beckoned and i spent like another hour shopping there.

By the time i was done, the sky had darkened even though it was coming close to only 7.00 pm which is Singapore's 8.00 pm!  Now, i heard that Bandung is cooling and i agreed that it was cooler than Singapore; however, don't compare it to the coolness of Cameron Highlands

No more time to shop as mom was famished; she seldom had dinner that late at night and as mentioned earlier, it was about 8 pm Singapore time! We couldn't decide where to have dinner and thought we should just check out the food outlets at Riau Junction, the mall we passed by earlier.

Stop for the Angkot, which was the most common public transportation in Bandung; i didn't have the opportunity to try out as mom was all for comfort and convenience. Furthermore, we don't speak the language which kind of made navigation even more challenging.

An abandoned building by the main road; prime real estate that could yield a lot of commercial spaces.

Food from Fat Cow Steak House that my mom and sister had at the food court on the top floor of Riau Junction. Wasn't impressed generally even though i was way more disappointed with my mie goreng special from Rumah Makan Sedap Purwakarta

Chanced upon trishaws again on the road again back to hotel where i had an earlier than expected sleep.

Interesting Sights near Bandung - Horses as a Mode of Transportation @ Indonesia

Do you know that in Chinese, the word road is generally written and spoken as 马路 (ma lu), which is translated into road for the horse? It's a term that I, who has lived in a city state all his life, could never quite understand until he visited Bandung.

In the modern era where motor vehicles have literally taken over the roads, horses as a mode of public transportation still exist in the outskirts of Bandung city.

It's fascinating to have them right in front of you as i could usually only see such sights in drama serials or read about them in novels of a backdrop dating back to pre-motorised period.

Spare me those touristy horse-drawn carriages in historical cities like London etc as they served mainly the travellers out to do something different. Here in Bandung, these horses were there basically to serve the domestic market; the locals.

All the pictures taken so far were from the car that we have rented for our activities to explore the surroundings of Bandung; hence, the relatively unclear / tinted photographs.

I did attempt to unwind the window and the smell of horse poo literally exploded right in my face! Well, i guess some sacrifices have to be made but my sisters and mum at the back of the car were literally shooting sharp, deadly stares at me. Oh well, so much about experiencing the local life.

Anyway, i think the scenes of horses trotting on the roads might not be there in the near future as they simply couldn't catch up with the speed of mechanical cars and as you can see from the above photo, a traffic bottleneck was created in a single-lane road. Sad yet that's the unfortunate, harsh reality of life.

BBQ Corn in the Highlands @ Tangkuban Perahu Mountain [Bandung]

Our family has a high resistance towards the purchase of tempting street food but when one was cold, the first thing to hit the mind was to get something to warm the tummy!

On that nice chilly day at Tangkuban Perahu in Bandung, there were a number of stalls offering barbecued corn and i knew i just had to have one ear! Okay, my family was generally disciplined except for me.

But hey, i am actually performing my duty as a filial son as i knew mum required a place to hide from the strong wind that was making her rub her hands constantly!

Happy her ordered a cup of less sweet local kopi and was surprised to find the residue right at the bottom! A veteran kopi auntie herself (she worked at the drink stall in a coffee shop); i bet she would have brought along a coffee strainer if she had the eyes to look into the future.

Now coming back to the charcoal grilled corn.

Instead of using a brush to layer the corn with butter, the Indonesians did it the most straightforward way; rub the corn against a block of butter! Yes, there's the risk of dirtying the butter although for the person who bought the corn, i was just glad to see a thicker spread that would likely enhance the corn's flavour.

At 10,000 rupiah each, the corn was cut into two pieces and i must said the ones we had were pretty good; wasn't badly charred, sweet and also buttery at the same time!

Still hungry? There were other dishes on the table for you to pick from! I am less inclined to try the deep fry stuff as i didn't know how long they have been there. The cup noodles were in fact more enticing!

No Brand Freshly Made Yong Tau Foo Noodle (现做现卖酿豆腐) @ Chong Pang Hawker Centre [Yishun, Singapore]

Weekends would usually mean the indulgence of cheap yet delicious hawker food for breakfast and it's rare to find me drawn to the healthier yong tau foo when there are so many others to choose from at Chong Pang hawker centre.

There were two reasons; firstly, that bowl of yong tau foo on the signage looked really appetising and reminded me of the famous one at Chinatown; secondly, Alex has been visiting the gym recently and his progressively built-up body is making me extremely conscious of my fat-laden one!

That second reason didn't stop me from having item number 3; yong tau foo noodle! I needed carbohydrates badly that morning even though i didn't realise it was the yellow noodle type that i totally abhor!

Thanks to the sweet sauce and the aromatic fried shallots - the noodle didn't taste horrid as expected and was in fact nice enough for me to clean up the bowl.

I am not usually a soup person even though i tend to veer towards the watery diet whenever there's a pending medical checkup or i need to lose some weight! The latter could have been the motivation but i am also craving for Yong Xiang Xing Yong Tau Foo.

Honestly speaking, the soup was bland rather than flavourful although the element of a less salty and hence healthier benefit could appeal to health-conscious individual. The liao (ingredients) were freshly made (i know as i saw the workers taking out the raw ingredients to make the individual items for yong tau foo) and tasted good; albeit not as mind blowing as Yong Xiang Xing Yong Tau Foo.

Nevertheless, it didn't stop me from clearing every single item; except for maybe a little bit of remaining soup.

Street Light Up (Night) Decoration for the Year of the Rooster (Chicken) 2017 @ Chinatown [Singapore]

$

It's going to be the year of the cock chicken rooster and i was deliberating on whether to travel to Chinatown to cover the street light-up since i still have a few dozen outstanding posts on Bandung

Do note that i will not be covering the festive street bazaar in this entry although i will purposely make another trip to Chinatown in the daytime when lighting condition would be much more favourable.

First destination upon reaching Chinatown - take lift up to level six of People's Park Centre where there's a fantastic public accessible spot to take photographs of the centerpiece for the annual lunar new year decorations.

Here's the big cock rooster at the busy cross junction of Eu Tong Sen Street and New Bridge Road with Upper Cross Street!

Designed by fourteen students from the Singapore University of Technology and Design, this chicken lantern towers at thirteen meters tall and said to stretch for about a hundred meters long due to the dancing tail feathers.

Well, very flowery design for the king of all chickens although in the real animal world, the male species tend to look more striking; an example would be the flamboyant peacock.

Taken further away as everyone seemed to crowd at the corner that's nearest to the centerpiece; frankly, you would like hundreds and maybe thousands of pictures that would look about the same.

I prefer to be unconventional; this spot, as mentioned earlier, is on the 6th floor of People's Park Centre where's there's an open air carpark. You don't need special access although there's a need to be mindful (and careful) of the cars driving into the carpark, especially at night when visibility is much lower.

On the ground floor as the sharp ass that's attached to my body and my hyperactive personality would not allow me to stay in one place for too long!

Close-up look of the rooster - by the way, the lanterns constructed for the street light up are using environmentally friendly LED lights, in line with the increasingly need to be eco-friendly.

With its head tilted upwards, i think it would be nice to have the rooster crowing loudly early in the morning, when the sun rises! Easy for me to say since i am not exactly living near Chinatown.

In all honesty, i really like the design of this year's centrepiece; it signifies a motivated rooster that's ready to welcome the new lunar year and forge ahead despite the difficult times ahead of Singapore.

With the LED lights within its body, there was also a shimmering brilliance to the humongous lantern.

One cycle ago, which was twelve years ago in 2005, there was a big hooha about the rooster lantern as it was surrounded with chicken eggs! The joke then was rooster doesn't lay eggs! Haha. Anyway, i think it was well remembered by the organisers and flower lanterns were used instead.

If it was a hen, maybe can put a hole at the butt to dispense golden eggs every now and then; this would be well-liked by the Chinese!

The supposedly tail feathers have to be supported by metal beams as it crosses a turn where motor vehicles would use to make a u-turn to enter the smaller streets of Chinatown like Pagoda street, Smith street etc.

Every lunar centerpiece would have an entire entourage right behind it and this year, the grassy stretch in the middle of Eu Tong Sen Street and New Bridge Road is filled with hundreds of chicks, roosters and hens!

The chicks were extremely adorable with a glassy expression and since chickens are known to peck from the grass, there's no need for extra decorative materials except for maybe a few wooden stump lanterns.

Crossing the road (me, not the chickens) - as it's the light up ceremony tonight, do expect this road to be closed to motor vehicles yet chocked with humans!

Pretty building decoration by Singapore's famous bak kwa export; Bee Cheng Hiang which can be found in Taiwan, China, just to name a few

Local Singaporeans' favourite bak kwa - Lim Chee Guan bak kwa has yet to see a long queue forming but as we near the new lunar year, be prepared for a queue that can last a few hours; my sister ever queued 8 hours to get her hands on the delicious meat jerky.

Stage for tonight's light up and official opening ceremony! There would be performances, fireworks and typical of Chinese celebrations, firecrackers!

Festive street bazaar was operating for the first day yesterday - as said earlier, i would not be covering the bazaar today even though i couldn't resist paying it a visit after dinner at the nearby Kazan Japanese stall.

It might be boring and hardly innovative to use blooming flowers as the overhanging lanterns above the road and street but i beg to differ as they were so pretty! This is already a big jump considering that some places are still using plain old fairy lights.

Remember the chicken entourage i mentioned? They took up an unused grassy patch although due to the location, it would be hard for anyone to take a closer look as motor vehicles would traverse along the two busy roads in normal times. With the green metal barricades, they also appeared to look as if they are caged up!

The street light up typically covers the parallel South Bridge Road that's on the other side of Chinatown, nearing the heart of Singapore's business district.

One word; disappointing. the branches of plum blossoms were too short to make an impact and having red lanterns hanging over the road was just plain boring decorations.

Done with my photography for the street light up decorations at night. Now's the time to enter the bazaar to get the things i know mum would want for Chinese New Year!

I got sun-dried persimmons at S$6 for 500 grams as the sample was just too good to ignore! They reminded me of the ones i got from the persimmon city of Gongcheng in China

Phoenix eye melon seeds at S$5 per 500 grams; my family always stocks up on this species of melon seeds and you can't get it outside of the lunar new year period! Darn, i think i bought too little; two kilos would not last us a month.

Coffee Hock - a mainstay for the bazaar every year, foreigners who love Singapore's kopi o (coffee black) should buy a few packs home as they are so good! Promotion now ongoing at 2 packs (with 24 sachets) for S$5.50 or buy 4 packs for $11 with a free pack of chrysanthemum or ginger powdered tea bags!

Not sure if the coffee is good? Take a sample and it's not the usual small cups hor; it's one big cup of coffee for you to slowly indulge in! p.s. the stall owner, a young lady, is very pretty!

In a way, i am lucky i didn't make it a point to cover the bazaar as some stalls had yet to open for business (since official opening is tonight) and others were still waiting for people to take up the stall. Interested to take it for your entrepreneurial activity? Give the number a call!

The Stone Cafe with a View of the City! @ Bandung [Indonesia]

When i was actively looking through the numerous Bandung itineraries on the world wide web before my trip, the Stone Cafe popped up on quite a number and we guess it should be safe for us to add it in for the two days that a driver was engaged.

Due to its name, i was half expecting a themed cafe that's entirely made of stone with a cave-like ambience that would bring back to the era of our ancestors; the stone age.

I was wrong; there were three buildings for guests and the general consensus is that the structures are modern with just a little bit of traditional touch ups like the use of bamboo, wood and stones.

We were offered both indoor and outdoor seating but seeing that mom would very much prefer to be in a sheltered arena (away from the wind), we opted for the former and were momentarily mesmerized by the night view of Bandung city ahead of us when we stepped in.

Guess the cafe's favourable location at the hillside was a big draw for diners, especially couples out for a romantic dinner. The building we were in catered mainly for families and big groups and i understand smaller private gazebos are available.

They were wondering when food would arrive as we did wait a pretty long time for lunch a few hours earlier. As it was officially the first full day in Bandung, the word "tired" was written on all their faces!

Tong Tji Teh Poci - a pot of hot tea would always be welcome when one's cold. That's mom's tea whereas the younger (albeit not youthful) me had a cup of hot chocolate to soothe the chill on my body. No picture of the hot chocolate as the picture turned out blurred!

Pisang Goreng Keju - literally translated as fried banana in grated cheese, i was wondering if the combination of bananas and cheese drenched in chocolate sauce would go well together as we don't really get this combi in Singapore.

Turned out the bananas' sweetness complemented extremely well with the cheese and chocolate and the taste was memorable enough for us to order the same thing when we saw it at another cafe the next day.

Chilled Prawn Avocado Salad - reserving my comment on salad as stomach space should be better used on non-salad items when one's overseas.

Spicy Prawn Bruschetta - okay tasting although the simplicity of it means there's a high chance for me to replicate. Personally, i feel that the spicy prawn would go better in pasta!

Chicken Cordon Bleau - at 70,000 rupiah, this was the most expensive item we ordered even though once converted to Singapore dollars, it is very reasonable at about S$8.00 given that this is a restaurant / cafe.

Taste wise, unimpressive unfortunately.

Tom Yum Goong -   we just wanted something hot and mom was craving for tom yum soup; hence the order although we were far from Thailand. Turned out it was the best dish among all (for me, this was of equal standing with the fried banana with cheese)! The sweet, tangy and spicy soup kicked a punch and we can literally feel our pores opening as it trickled down our throat. Shiok! The only issue was that the fish tasted, well, fishy.

Be serenaded by the music from a live band performing on the ground level of another building of Stone Cafe. As they faced the internal road of the cafe, i wondered if they could be moved to an enclosed area surrounded by diners so that their music can be better appreciated.

Tangkuban Perahu (Ratu Crater) - The Upturned Boat Mountain as Part of our Bandung Outskirt Day Tour @ Indonesia

Bandung has more than just factory outlet shopping and if you are willing to explore its outskirts (one to three hours' drive out of the city), there are plenty of natural attractions.

Out of the many, the most famous was said to be Tangkuban Perahu; a 2,084-meter tall volcano with three signature craters and that's where we went for our first item of the Bandung outskirt day tour!

Now, we have heard plenty of horror stories about the attraction and it has nothing to do with the paranormal; it's human related and has to do with money.

Aside from the exorbitant entrance fee enforced on foreigners (ten times more expensive), access to certain sections of the natural park would require the engagement of a tour guide (more money to be paid out) and that's not all; it was highlighted in numerous blogs and even on tripadvisor that more people would follow you and your entourage to "persuade" all of you to purchase insanely-priced souvenirs.

I was in fact deliberating whether to strike off the item from the itinerary since both my sisters couldn't take such bullshit and there would likely be an ugly scene. However, they were cool about it and figured that as it's a major attraction, it would be a great pity if we didn't get to see it.

Hence, let's continue our journey and see what's exactly so nice about Tangkuban Perahu! By the way, i still find it difficult to remember its Indonesian name and only know it by the translated version; the upturned boat.

Horses that were probably there to be ridden for a fee. Louise likes to ride horses whereas i have never been keen to sit on them.

Arrival at the car parking area which also happened to be the main congregation point for everyone dropping by "the upturned boat". So why upturned boat? This couldn't be visualized at this point but if you are staying in Best Western Premier La Grande hotel at the city (as we were), you would notice a mountain with the shape of an overturned boat and that, my dear, is Tangkuban Perahu.

Scene at the parking area with many roaming mobile vendors targeting newly arrived visitors to buy their wares. Such scenes are common in China and i guess i have learnt how to avoid them.

There's one person i can't avoid as this particular person (no picture) would be there when you opened the car door; his aim was to entice you to engage his service as a tour guide (cost: 300,000 rupiah) to bring you to Kawah Domas, the smallest crater, that's about an hour of hike.

We mentioned we couldn't decide since my mom wasn't too keen in walking and would very much prefer to check out what's available here first. Story should have ended. It didn't and i would share later at the end of this post.

The sign signifying the "i am here" that most people were queuing to take picture with; i am too impatient to wait and when faced with such situations, i would take the photos for others and upload them to this blog.

At this point, the elevation was 1,830 meters - temperature was cool although the strong wind brought chills down our neck; so much so that mom regretted leaving her thick sweater back in the hotel!

Kawah Ratu - also known as the Queen's crater, this was the biggest crater (out of the three) in the natural park with a depth of about 500 meters.

Trails surrounded the crater with one connecting to Upas Crater which was said to be closed due to the emission of extremely toxic gases. Shall explore the foot path shortly as the ladies needed to visit the loo.

Some hawkers were less mobile due to the products for sale; like the one above with angklung; a musical instrument that i thought should be given the national status as it is uniquely from Indonesia!

Plants on wood - i would have purchased a few to liven up the empty spaces in my house but i guess they would be better off with an owner who knows how to take care of plants.

The ladies were taking too long and i decided to wait for them near the washroom instead. There's the driver we engaged for the day, Mr Askan! Darn, the deep fried stuff looked so good and i regretted not ordering some since Mr Askan was also ordering from him.

Nevertheless, something else caught my attention; the viewing platform above the toilet (note the sign to the left of the photo) and the scenery ahead was the direct opposite of Kawah Ratu.

Spectacular panorama with Bandung city ahead of us!

Turning back towards the Queen's Crater as the ladies were finally done with their business. As usual, there was a long queue in the ladies' room.

As we strolled along the stone pathway lined with tiny straw thatched huts on both sides, i couldn't help thinking if this market had been in existence for a few centuries given the heavy dose of nostalgia!

Splashes of modernity - figurines of characters from Naruto! I almost forgot the title of the Japanese comic even though i used to be a great fan before video streaming drew my attention away.

I am unsure if things here were cheaper than those touted by the mobile hawkers although you can try bargaining and agreeing on a price that everyone is happy with.

Frankly, the street was rather deserted and i don't see many visitors around, especially foreigners. Put it this way, the excessive pricing was off-putting and there were just too many negative online reviews warning visitors to be careful of insistent touts, specifically those playing a sympathy card.

We are humans (obviously) and couldn't resist being sympathetic sometimes; hence, some visitors would rather NOT take the risk by not visiting. Say for example my sister; she almost wanted to get this set of bow and arrows!!!

Seemed like coconuts were being cooked over fire; were they being made into coconut charcoal which can be a relatively cheap fuel alternative.

The gradient of the slope, the low height for the structures, the clear sky - elements bringing forth a picture that's normal yet seemingly ancient.

Mum didn't care; she was just feeling so so cold!

The rebel in me was tempted to climb over the fence, roll down the rocks and (if still alive), check if the whitish-greyish-bluish things at the bottom were sand or water.

We were nowhere near the end of the path!

Reminiscent of our trip to Hallasan at Jeju Island, Louise was always energised to have the head-start; like her bro me, she didn't like standing still when she's overseas and would prefer to make full use of her time!

Sulfur powder and stones can be purchased for a price; i should have bought some since i heard that sulfur repels snakes! Oh well, whether they are real or not would be another story.

Reaching somewhere near the top as mom declared she would walk no further! Poor her could still walk although she absolutely couldn't stand the chill of the strong wind!

Hm.... i was still thinking of asking her to hike to the other end where the height was even higher than where we were standing at. Guess mom would give me a tight slap across the face if i were to suggest that.

A new building was being constructed and i am wondering if the symbol of the fire on top was in any way related to the bandung sea of fire event in 1946.

Us taking photos to commemorate the hard work we put in! How strong was the wind? Just check out the hair of Joyce and Louise!

Bottom of the crater - i have always thought that the crater of a volcano was filled with red hot lava that when cooled, would turn black. The sight i saw that day at Kawah Ratu was different even though the last eruption was in 2013!

Time to get going!

To reward mom for her dedication and faith in keeping up with her energetic children, we got her a cup of unfiltered hot coffee, in addition to charcoal grilled corn! For pictures on the corn we had, click here

Going off again even though we would be taking another path back to the main car parking area. Beside bring along warm clothing, please do wear a good pair of shoes as the surface can be slippery when wet.

And the steps can be steep!

Another view of the market; see that pole on the upper right of the photograph? That's the furthest we managed to walk to before mom stopped us. That same path would actually lead us to the then-closed Kawah Upas.

Joyce is always game for a photo unlike Alex, who resists having his picture taken nowadays after he was recognised by quite a number of friends and relatives who spotted him in this blog. I really need a "model" whenever i travel.

I was forewarned of the sickening sulphur stench even though it wasn't as bad as i imagined it to be. No mask was required in my honest opinion. However, it's a different level at Kawah Rengganis; a face mask is recommended!

She couldn't stop being the first!

And being all smug about it when she can relax to wait for the rest of the seniors to catch up. I wasn't really wrong in putting out the "senior" label since the three of us (mum, Joyce and myself) are older than her. And she goes to the gym; we don't.

From the above photo, the taller reddish building did appear to be some sort of a gate / clock tower commonly seen in ancient times.

I doubt that there would be a historical lineage to the market place as tourism didn't really become all that important until recent times and there's a big risk for a commercial entity to be housed here in the past since the area is prone to volcanic activity.

In the past hundred years alone, there were a total of eleven eruptions with the most recent one taking place just four years ago!

Nature can be so beautiful yet cruel at the same time.

As i have always said, be happy and always enjoy your life. No matter what happen, life goes on and since we have to live on, might as well enjoy every single moment. :)

If not, just be like Joyce and vent your frustrations using non-organic materials. p.s. i think the same violent blood runs in the family.

=====

Continuing my story on the tour guide who asked us to engage him for the hike towards Kawah Domas - the sky started tearing and we opted to leave. The person was super unhappy and said he had been waiting for us. My parting pissed off retort was "we didn't agree anything and i didn't ask you to wait". Thankfully, this was the only negative incident i had in Bandung

One of Alex's table tennis kakis messaged us the above picture and said we should check out the north Indian food at this new restaurant in Yishun's latest suburban mall as it exceeded the expectations of those who went with him.

He is fully aware that Alex is less keen with Indian food given their usual spiciness but if you look closely at the pull-up banner, it was boldly indicated that the spiciness is based on customers' choice! Hence, i decided to pop by the small outfit with Alex yesterday since mall is just a short bus ride away.

Open-concept kitchen where you can be assured of the hygiene standard and also be aware of what went into your food! Need to add extra chilli to your meal, just holler and i bet everyone in the kitchen can hear you loud and clear!

Now, i can never decide what to have when given an extensive menu and it's nice that the eatery has rice set meals; vegetarian is obviously not for me and i went with the most expensive S$8 premium rice set.

As part of the set, you can also top up S$1 for a glass of either lime or orange. I didn't know about Alex's lime; my orange tasted sourish and not because it was natural orange juice.

Premium Set C - with chicken curry, white premium rice, chilli fish, salad and two minuscule pieces of papadum; the overall unappetizing outlook discounted the expectation and that's when you would be surprised when you take a bite.

Featuring the long grain rice that's light on your stomach and fluffy on the bite, it was a lot of rice that i couldn't resist scooping again and again into my mouth; so much so that i stole a bit from Alex who unfortunately still couldn't stand the spices.

Of course i ate the rice together with the meat even though the grains were good even on their own! Chicken curry was so tender with a robust spiciness and the best thing; boneless! Damn, i suck in describing Indian food as so many spices and ingredients (up to an eye-popping 56 kinds according to Delhi Chilli website) can go into preparing just one dish!

Chilli fish was actually not as spicy as i was warned it would be; my personal take was that it's deep fried fish stir-fried in sweet-spicy soya sauce. Nevertheless, i like the external crunchiness and the soft yet solid fish meat buried within.

Even though i enjoyed the pickled cucumbers, the addition of two slices of carrots hardly made it a salad and i would definitely appreciate a bigger papadum; hopefully one that can cover my face!

Would i be back?! Definitely! And i would bring more people so that i can order ala-carte dishes. Another item that caught my attention; the mutton dum briyani!

Whether a food is authentic or not doesn't have much bearing on my taste buds as i only believe what goes into my mouth and what my brain is thinking of as i chew through.

For the longest time ever, i am aware of the existence of this oyster cake stall at maxwell food centre but i was never tempted to try it for one simple reason; i never quite understand the deep affection some people have towards oysters. In actual fact, i find the taste of this aphrodisiac seafood rather horrid.

However, it did have fantastic reviews and given that i really couldn't endure standing in line for more than half an hour to get my hands on the related teochew meat puffs from a particular stall at random pasar malams, the maxwell fuzhou oyster cake stall should be a more convenient alternative.

Nicely cut into three smaller pieces for ease of eating, the stall doesn't sell any other varieties except for oyster. And for the entire stall, there's nothing else except for oyster cake; impressive if you ask me since it has been operational for more than 40 years!

Even though this was priced at a lower S$2 (compared to the pasar malam stall), it's not hard to notice that it was also smaller in size and the meat buried within wasn't as generous. Plus point is a thinner crust (skin) with a light crisp that wasn't as oily.

Taste wise, i would term it as healthier than the pasar malam competitor as the minced meat wasn't as fattening although if you give me a choice, i would definitely opt for the more sinful one; there's nothing more delicious than digging into an oily, fat-laden meat puff.

Kampung Daun - Dining In Traditional Bamboo Huts, Surrounded with Greenery and Serenaded by the Sounds of Waterfall and Birds @ Bandung [Indonesia]

Themed restaurants are often featured in travelogues to Bandung but for a person who gives much higher priority to taste of food rather than the ambience of the place that serves the food, i am usually skeptical to go out of the way just to indulge in the experience of supposedly something unique.

That's my personal view although in most cases, i would follow with the flow of my fellow travel mates and in the day trip we made to the outskirts of Bandung, Kampung Daun was chosen and i gamely agreed; there's always the element of surprise anyway and in this case, we are sharing the cost of the meal.

Arrival at the carpark with a horse grazing by the side; as explained earlier in this post, horses are commonly seen outside the city and often as a mode of transport.

Grand entrance of Kampung Daun; for those unfamiliar with the Bahasa Indonesian language, Kampung means village and Daun, according to Google Translate, is leaf. Hence, Kampung Daun is literally the Leaf Village!

Cockatoos in a big, bamboo cage - expected more fauna? Nope, i think that's about the only living and moving thing i see, aside from humans, and cats!

Customers apparently waiting for their tables even though it was already past 2 pm! Our group was late because we spent too much time enjoying ourselves in the hot spring park earlier.

What shall i do when i have too much free time despite a hungry tummy? Explore the village of course and yes, there was a stage, a square and a retail outlet selling snacks, some local handicraft etc. As the village is operational till night, i am guessing the stage would only be "alive" when the sun sets.

The official entrance to the restaurant - it's exciting as we didn't know what to expect and the insides were pretty much hidden; offering no preview to what's really inside. Thankfully, i already had a slight inkling given the research i did prior to the trip.

First impression - i thought i was entering a cultural village; similar to the feeling i had when i visited Mari Mari Cultural Village at Kota Kinabalu.

Mobile street hawkers by the side of the main street of the village; selling quail eggs and malt candy lookalike, i was in no mood for a snack when all i needed then was a hearty, filling lunch!

A mini cooking station, i guess. Whatever the case, i wasn't paying attention as we couldn't find the hut assigned to our group! With at least 39 individual huts spread out in the sprawling village, you can imagine the frustration on the faces of the ladies in my group.

Gotten the advice that the hut was up the staircase - i can sense the irritation from my elder sister as stairs are her greatest enemy and a hungry gal is an angry gal.

Luckily, the "hike" wasn't far and the moment, the ladies got into the bamboo hut; it's all smiles! Time to smile at the camera and then order the food.

Oops, we had yet to be given the menu; another photograph then. To be honest, i don't enjoy sitting cross legged to have my meals as it always translates into leg cramps and pins and needles.

Leaving the ordering to the ladies; as you can see, the environment was rustic and relaxing with the natural music coming from a nearby waterfall.

Too many items on the menu and they had a hard time deciding! By the way, there was a musky odour emitting from the menu; like a wet book that wasn't dried properly.

For me, it's exploring time! The number S13 refers to the hut we were and you see this that bamboo container with a stick by the side? It's a device for you to call for service! Want to order? Use the stick to hit the bamboo. Want the bill? Do the same thing!

Our next door neighbour!

A sheltered sink with running water and soap dispenser was conveniently placed in between both huts. At least we didn't have to walk all the way down to the main entrance just to wash our hands before / during / after our meal.

On the ground level - there were ample space in between huts and privacy was somewhat maintained unless you have someone with a loud voice (like mine).

The hut with the best view overlooking the mini waterfall.

Interior of the hut - if i am not wrong, this should be one of the biggest private huts for bigger groups (24 persons). Sadly, our group comprised of only four persons

Campfire? Likely to be lit up only at night! Frankly, the best time to visit should be at night although i am usually less keen as my photography skill at night is horrendous!

The huts seemed to be built to accommodate the natural terrain; somewhat like in the past when technology wasn't as advanced and villages sprouted to complement nature rather than destroying it for human's selfish convenience.

Directional signboards at a crossroad!

A narrow running stream by the side of the huts. How come we were not given a hut next to the stream instead?! Inline with the natural surroundings, please beware of the occasional bugs.

Blooming flowers on the huts!

Walking back as i figured the food would be there waiting for me on the table! I did inform my family that they could always holler for me as the area was relatively quiet with just a few occupied huts. Furthermore, i did inherit my loud voice from my mom.

They were all smiley here as i didn't share the other unglam photographs of them expressing their exaggerated hungry faces as 30 minutes had passed and no food had arrived yet!

My mom's ginger tea and Louise's green tea latte was the first two to be placed on our table. I didn't take a sip of the ginger tea although i recollected that the latte was rather good; strange to have it in a place famed for their Sundanese cuisine though.

Ice Kalapa Orange - my drink which was simply, orange mixed with coconut juice housed in a coconut husk filled with tenderly soft coconut meat. Surprisingly quite good.

Food was finally served ten minutes later!

Instead of having dishes coming one at a time, it's less taxing for the server to consolidate all the dishes and delivering them to us at one go! Good for me as you can see what dishes we had ordered at one glance!

Singkong Goreng Bambu - fried yam that i didn't like; it was bitter with a siap aftertaste.

Tahu Goreng - if you ask me to identify one dish that i really like in Bandung; it's their deep fried beancurd. Something so normal and so commonly found even in Singapore, the taste of the beancurd in Bandung was just too addictive with a subtle sweetness-saltiness that stands out from the common ones.

Kangkung Balacan - normal.

Sate Ayam - satays in Indonesia are always served with plain white rice; a style not seen in Singapore as we are likely to go with ketupats (plain rice dumpling). Texture wise; meat was tough and sauce wasn't impressionable.

Sate Kambing - mutton satay; again, not amazing. Both types of satay were disappointing as we had heard that satay is famous in Bandung and we expected to have them for at least one meal a day!

Ayam Panggang Madu - honey roast chicken; i mentioned a different fried beancurd in Bandung and another dish that wasn't the usual in the Indonesian city is their chicken!

Almost all the chickens i had were healthily reared with a paper thin skin and hardly any fat and meat. This was okay tasting; i prefer the grilled chicken from the Indonesian panggang stalls in Singapore's food courts / kopitiams though.

Ikan Nila Bakar Keropok - fried tilapia with fresh meat, crunchy skin that wasn't overly oily and tasted marvellous with the sweet sauce!

Even with hits and misses, the hunger in us couldn't stop us from devouring everything! It's also rare to find the table exceptionally quiet as everyone was busied stuffing themselves.

Note: the cats would know when you are about to finish and crowd around your hut! This particular feline had eyes with different colours!

Dusun Bambu Family Leisure Park - Darn Rain Made It Hard to Appreciate! @ Bandung [Indonesia]

$

Said to be a place where "traditional culture meets modern sustainable living", i was excited to be visiting Dusun Bambu Family Leisure Park but as you can see, it was raining and even though i totally welcomed the cooler temperature, it's going to be hard for photo-taking.

Dusun Bambu is translated to bamboo village and it's obviously appropriate to have a humongous bamboo sculpture greeting us when we arrived at the ticketing booth! p.s. frankly, a mischievous act (lighted matchstick etc) would likely reduce this to ashes.

Seen at the ticketing booth - the list of things you can do at the leisure park! The most popular and the most commonly featured in blogs was Lutung Kasarung; dining in a bird's cage structure surrounded by tall trees.

After paying the entrance fee of 15,000 rupiah per person (less than S$2), we stepped into an arena where ducks (or are they geese) wandered freely.

Right ahead of us was the sight of a typical farmland growing Southeast Asia's preferred carbohydrate; rice! It was a pretty view as we were the only group (no thanks to the rain) and the rice straws were dancing ever so gracefully (gratitude to the wind).

This flowery shuttle arrived for us to board; well, i was thinking of walking to explore the place although the wet weather had dampened that mood.

Not to mention that our mum was freezing!!! Once again, i am registering her regret for not bringing thicker clothing! Oh well, she learnt well and brought winter wear for our outskirt day tour the next day.

Drop In - a centralised location where visitors would congregate in order to check out the leisure park. There's a large metal container with dry pieces of wood and this begets the question to the management; why didn't you light it up so that we can get some warmth!?

Surrounding the "drop in" were quite a few buildings and we just hopped into the one nearest to us as it started pouring again! Pasar Khatulistiwa was, simply put, a place with a food court and souvenir shop.

Mum wasn't interested to follow us and opted to stay in the food court where she can warm herself by drinking a cup of hot coffee! Rupiah wouldn't be of much use as payment; you have to exchange it for the currency printed by dusun bambu! Conversion rate; 1 to 1.

While the ladies helped my mum with her order, the not-so-filial son proceeded to survey the "neighbourhood" - according to my map, ahead of me would be Lutung Kasarung.

There's a direct path connecting me to the "bird cages"; however, there was a gate further down (not in the photo) that's locked. I am guessing it was closed due to the rain; in case of falling branches.

Rabbit Wonderland - more like a kid's playground that's also closed because of the weather. Didn't look too exciting from what i see and i wonder how it's going to survive. More on the wonderland later.

Mum was settled at a corner hidden from the wind and warmed by mug of boiling hot coffee and that's when the teo siblings can finally step out for a sibling-only exploration!

The road ahead didn't seem rosy but we were adamant not to have our time and money gone to waste. The miserly character in our family shouldn't be compromised and with that in mind, we forged ahead, without a care for the world; except for maybe our mom whom we thought would get bored pretty soon.

A running stream cut across our path; i can imagine families having picnics at the sides and enjoying themselves with tons of laughter should the weather be sunny.

Dad would have liked this place as there were so many flowers! We did ask him to join us but he insisted there would not be anything new from his past two visits; last of which was easily two to three decades ago!

Remember, once you are out in the open in this bloody rainy weather, you wouldn't find much shelter; best so far was this space with a propped up umbrella on a wooden platform and even then, there's only a tiny space in the middle where you can sit without wetting your pants!

Long, green field where you can fly a kite if conditions permit!

Navigating via the given map would be a great headache as it's not drawn to scale! Thankfully, the park wasn't as big as a nature reserve and you can probably gauge your direction better without relying on the map!

Sunflower crop!

Spotting the sunflowers brightened our mood as we hope it would bring us some luck in clearing up the sky so that we can proceed with our journey in peace and with many better-looking photographs!

I think the flowers were supposed to be facing down like the above although in the gloomy weather, it's easier to assume they were as disappointed as we were with the unexpected downpour.

Now, i saw quite a few signs indicated corkage charge and i thought they were referring to wine or alcoholic drinks. I just did a google translate and the translation is "guests bringing and consuming food and drink from outside will be charged 250,000 rupiah". How would a foreigner know sia?! I would have wrongly recommended every reader to bring their own food for a picnic!

See the environment right in front of us! So nice yet i couldn't even bring in my own food?! Okay, to be fair to the company managing the leisure park, the entrance ticket wasn't expensive in the first place.

The park is purpose built and i guess maintenance cost would not be cheap. The least we can do is to help support the dining establishments in the park. hmm... even i don't feel convinced of that corkage charge.

Eh, a coconut sculpture? I think. *shrugs*

We ventured further north and noticed a few enclosed compounds we thought were staff housing. Even if i am curious, i do respect other peoples' privacy.

No, i seriously didn't break down the fence! It was already lying on the ground when we neared it and only then did we realise it was a camping ground known as Sayang Heulang!

Rain was getting heavier and the sisters decided to make their way back. A scaredy cat when alone, i had no choice but to follow them. :(

Despite the supposedly long distance on the poorly-scaled map, the building where my mum was at was actually quite near to where we were.

As i didn't quite fully check out the surroundings, i told my sisters to look for my mom first and i shall meet them a short while later. Above was another angle taken of Rabbit Wonderland.

Still thought it was still a lousy place until the truth hit me like a hard rock thrown in my face. How could i have not realised it?! There's a reason why this was named the rabbit wonderland and all the while, i have been thinking of only alice and the wonderland.

It's known as rabbit wonderland because when the weather is good, the rabbits would be let out of the pens to mingle with the visitors (who paid an additional entrance charge).

My personal view aside (given the potential abuses by people who don't know how to handle the rabbits), i knew this playground would be a great hit with children!

Now, my sisters weren't impressed with Dusun Bambu since we didn't really see much in our stroll. If only they had accompanied me and be fascinated, as i was, with the little huts by the lakeside.

The above was the panoramic view i took before stepping onto the performance platform ahead of me. It was a man-made lake but the view in front of me was just too beautiful; traditional huts, towering trees and even the modern building on the left seemed to complement the entire landscape.

Guess there were activities you can do at the lake in normal, non-rainy times.

My curiosity lies with the huts; what are they used for? How do i enter? Is it an accommodation where we can stay for one night? My questions shall be answered soon.

Reversing my footsteps and bypassing the stream that i talked about much earlier. As with the man made lake, the stream should also be purposely built.

Purbasari - a Sundanese restaurant by the lake and that's also the entrance towards the huts which means the huts were used for dining, very much like Kampung Daun.

Lutung Kasarung - honestly, the many pictures of the bird cages at this place were the deciding factors for choosing Dusun Bambu over others and it would be a great pity if i couldn't see them with my own eyes.

The mid canopy trail shall lead us to the locked gate; earlier, i did notice a guardhouse with staff manning it and i was thinking of asking them for permission just to take a few shots of the bird cages.

Permission was denied, albeit nicely and i didn't want to put them in a difficult position by insisting my way. As expected, safety was of concern as the floor was slippery and it was still drizzling. By the way, you need to rent the bird cage for a fee; big cage cost 150,000 rupiah an hour whereas smaller ones would be 125,000 rupiah an hour.

This would be closest i could manage for a picture of the bird cages. For those interested to know how they look like in good weather, please google. :)

Got scolded by the rest as i apparently took too long and they were getting worried! As i had overseas roaming, our general guide when we couldn't find one another is to give a missed call and then wait at the main entrance; in this case, it would be the place with a smaller scale bamboo structure, where we disembarked earlier from the shuttle.

Reached the paddy fields once again after taking the shuttle back to the ticketing booth.

Another panoramic photo - noted the rather big difference in picture colour and quality between the above photo and the ones before. The one directly above is taken using my iPhone panorama function; personally, i still prefer using DSLR but without a wide angle lens, it's more tedious to stitch up a few photos to make up a panorama.

Back at the spot where our driver, Mr Askan, was patiently waiting for us. Sadly for us and fortunately for the management, there's no bonfire to send us off.

Shi Fu Ge (食福閣) - Crab in a Bag Delivered Right to Your Doorstep!

$
0
0
Some of you might have noticed the above advertisement appearing on your facebook newsfeed; i didn't but my sister did (she must have been craving the combo bag from dancing crab) and bought two portions of the mini crab in the da bag imperial pot!

Now, i have never heard of Shi Fu Ge (食福閣) and after checking out their website, i figured it was just like out typical tze-char stall in coffee shop with one noticeable difference; it provides island-wide delivery for your tze-char dishes, right to your doorstep.

Food was indeed carefully wrapped and packed into a paper box although i did wonder about the mess they would create. I was about to looking for newspapers to lay onto my extendable dining table when i decided to unwrap further.

The food was covered with an additional layer of aluminium foil and that's when i realised no newspaper would be needed!

Plastic sheet was big enough to cover the table and once we were done with the food, it's an ease to clear up the debris! Just wrap up everything, tie up the plastic sheet and chuck it down the rubbish chute. *happy*

As it was our first time ordering from Shi Fu Ge, we were hesitant on the portions even though the orders were good for 10 persons and we only had like 6 adults and 2 kids. Nevertheless, some prawn rolls to complement the meal, just in case.

Turned out the portions were pretty decent and although we didn't stuff ourselves to the death of us, the meal was sufficient enough for us to consider Shi Fu Ge for future gatherings in my house!

Mini Imperial Pot (Spicy) - well, i don't understand why it's indicated as a pot when everything was in a bag! Anyway, happiness enveloped us as we opened up to a bag filled with crabs, prawns, corn, potatoes, clams and mussels.

The weight of each ingredient wasn't indicated on groupon but i found out it contained 3 Sri Lankan crabs (400-500 grams each), 300 grams of prawns, 300 grams of clams, 300 grams of mussels, 300 grams of corns and 300 grams of potatoes!

This spicy version was good in my opinion; more black peppery than spicy which i would have associated with chilli crab. Ingredients were fresh and overall delectable except for maybe the relatively small size for the crabs; they were meaty though.

Mini Imperial Pot (Salted Egg) - aside from spicy, you can opt for non spicy. For salted egg, there's an additional charge of S$5 which my sister gladly paid.

Verdict on salted egg - more a wet version of salted egg that's more buttery than salted egg. As usual, the passive eater in me had no big issue with the taste. In fact, i would recommend you cook a pot of white rice so that you can make use of the sauce; drench your bowl of white rice with it!

There is a reason why i didn't indicate the groupon coupon as i realised it would be cheaper for me to buy direct from the Shi Fu Ge's website. Delivery would have been free since i live in Yishun and even if i live in Pasir Ris, the charge would only be S$3; we paid S$5!
