Rollie Olie - Not Really Your Usual Sushi Rolls @ The Star Vista [Singapore]

Sometimes, i really like it when a bunch of crazy friends decided to meet up without any solid plan on where to have their dinner!

Reason being surprises do happen and in this case, i managed to have a darn satisfactory meal at Rollie Olie; an eatery serving Asian fusion cuisine along the line of sushi rolls, pokebowls, skinny rolls and sushi burritos.

Concept was cafe like (bright, spacious, mish-mash furniture, comfy) and frankly, i was expecting cakes, pastry and ice cream instead of their signature sushi rolls! Extra point for the restaurant - complimentary lemon water!

Bonus point - the creative selection of fusion inspired condiments for your food; including and not limited to curry mayo, wasabi mayo, spicy mayo and yuzu mustard.

My order - Dos Amigos sushi roll with Me So Onion soup! p.s. just the name of the soup was sufficient reason for me to get a bowl since i am totally into onions!

Sadly, it was more miso (guess that's where the "me so" comes about) than onions and both were like on their own without a blended flavour i presumed would blow me away. That spongy looking stuffs were the breadcrumbs i guess even though they were a lot larger than the dictionary-defined crumbs.

Dos Amigos - i would have loved to get my hands on the fried options like Cali Dream (fried prawn) or beachcomber (fried soft shell crab) but the fryer was spoilt that day. Nevertheless, i personally felt this was the next best option with ingredients like grilled eel, avocado, cream cheese, cucumber, jicama, red roe, tamago, tempura crunch and chives with eel sauce!

Was it good? Good is an understatement as i got sweetness, creaminess, cheesiness, savouriness all mixed into one and blended further with the moist sushi rice as i chewed through each piece! It was unlike conventional sushi rolls commonly found in Japanese restaurants; this had an element of surprise.

Honestly, i couldn't wait for my next visit to try the other 8 types of sushi rolls!

Thanks to my charitable friends, i am the blessed recipient for the caterpillar (simpler, healthier yet still yummy) and sun-kissed salmon! Latter was more maki like although it was so much nicer with a generous amount of salmon and cut crab sticks in mayo!

Now, when should i try the other six types?

Sabpard Thai Food's Pineapple Fried Rice @ S11 Yishun Block 744 [Opposite Yishun MRT Station]

When Alex opened up the pack of pineapple fried rice he bought for his supper last week, the burst of enticing aroma was too hard for me to resist and i totally relished the few spoonfuls i managed to steal while he was engrossed in his game!

That very weekend, i suggested patronising the stall which was less than a five-minute walk away from my house and for those living in Yishun, the coffee shop is only right opposite the Yishun MRT station!

Although a few tables were reserved for customers of the Thai food stall, the crowd at the popular coffee shop after 6 pm can be insane and it's best to arrive before dinnertime. I was there at 4.45 pm, ordered my food, made my payment and held on to the above token until it rang for collection a few minutes later.

Now, compare the above with the pineapple fried rice from the famous Taste of Thailand; you would have noticed it had much better visual appeal and i am not just referring to the generous amount of pork floss that covered almost 80% of the yellowish fried rice.

Underneath the cloud of pork floss, be prepared for two good sized prawns, freshly fried cashew nuts, sweet and juicy pineapple cubes and pieces of raisins sitting on a bed of moist yet not overly oily fried rice!

I devoured the entire plate even though it would be good enough for two persons; not my fault as each mouthful of rice was filled with the fragrance of pineapple, the nutty aroma of the cashews and sweetness from the pineapples and raisins. It's bad for someone who is on a perpetual carbo-restricted diet. :(

Phoon Huat Christmas Sale (25 November to 01 December 2016) - Chiong Ah! @ Buona Vista MRT Station [Singapore]

$

My recent minor obsession with baking has resulted in a new hangout place even though i did try my best to resist my patronage until the occasional storewide sale; like the just-started Christmas sale!

For non-bakers, the Phoon Huat branch at Buona Vista MRT station is THE place where you can get all your baking materials; yes, everything! The problem is, temptation runs high and there's a tendency to WANT to buy everything!

Look at the long, spacious aisles! It's the Cold Storage equivalence except that the items sold here are almost exclusively for baking uses.

Replace your hand mixers with the beautiful stand mixers from the renowned KitchenAid brand! Sadly, the price tag was still too heavy for me to stomach and i had to make do with the Sensonic Stand Mixer instead. However, it's a dream appliance i would love to have in the future.

One of my favourite sections; bakeware consisting of pans, trays and tins! Some recipes would ask for specific dimensions and if not for the limitation of my kitchen storage, i sure would love to get my hands on all shapes and all sizes.

You can even get cold ingredients like cream cheese, whipping cream, butter, durian paste and for lazy individuals like me, frozen tart shells to make egg tarts!

I am always intrigued by the creativity unleashed with the use of piping tips! Fortunately, my rational mind kicked in and it told me that i still had about 16 tips at home that are still untouched.

The piping tips only affect the pattern of the decoration and it's the artificial colouring that shall bring the visual appeal to another level.

Nielsen Massey - looking like bottles of medicines that hailed from my parents' generation, this brand was said to be reputable for vanilla extracts; i have already used up one small bottle and is in fact half way through a second, albeit larger bottle.

When i was still a noob, i diligently bought muffin trays only to hear from a fellow colleague that i should consider using disposable muffin cups instead as presentation would be nicer with a reduced washing! Now, who wants to take over my muffin trays?

Remember the butter cookie recipe i shared? The original recipe by Miss Tam Chiak made use of the Golden Churn Butter in a tin whereas i opted for the butter version found in the cold section of supermarkets as it was easier to source. With a 15% discount due to the Christmas sale at Phoon Huat, i got myself a tin to try out the taste!

I never quite outgrow sprinklers and believe they add a layer of happiness to ice cream, cream frosting on muffins etc. Furthermore, the brats love them! One bottle it shall be.

As i do bake to pass some to friends, containers would definitely come in handy! I know disposables are eco-unfriendly but i have noticed a reduction in my reusable lock and lock containers as i couldn't remember whom i have passed them to!

Last stop - the literally heavy yet essential section; the place to get your plain flour, cake flour, top flour, corn flour, self raising flour, brown sugar, icing sugar, caster sugar etc etc! Taking advantage of the sale, i think i took like a total of about 6 kilograms!

My haul.

S$92.65 - amount i paid after a discount of S$16.35. Do note that the price tags captured in the photographs above were before discount.

Technically Day 0 and Day 1 of the Two Days, One Night Trip to Cameron Highlands!

$

It's not the first time you have heard of me complaining that overnight coach and flight are just not my kind of thing and i am often exhausted the next day when i reached the destination!

However, with limited leave and a reduced cash-flow, i had no choice but to endure the journey to Cameron Highlands via the overnight coach option by Konsortium in my recent trip. My usual recommendation is for free and easy travelers to take a plane to Ipoh, stay a night, travel to Cameron Highlands, stay a night or two and then return to Ipoh for the flight back to Singapore.

I miss the old days when coach services to Malaysia were a lot more competitive and competitors (Five Stars) would up the game by offering better coaches; i.e. with individual screens showing pirated movies, wider seats, double decker coaches. Now, it's just outsourced to another company. I purchased tickets for Konsortium yet the coach was from Happiness Holidays.

Whatever the case, i was surprised i dozed off rather easily once we cleared Malaysian custom and before i knew it, it's the customary stopover at Ming Ang in Yong Peng!

Alex had to buy his tea leaves eggs; i had already brushed my teeth yet i couldn't resist taking a small bite of the hard-boiled eggs; the fragrance of the tea leaves was strong and i was fighting resistance to purchase half a dozen to indulge in should the hunger pangs strike in the next few hours.

Mental note: must remember to grab a few packs of Ming Ang ultra delicious Heong Peah on my way back! Don't believe how good it is; there are always available samples for you to try!

Toilet break at the petrol kiosk before the coach trudged up the highlands!

Daybreak and as i am aware, no one can pull me back into slumber land once the sky is no longer dark. Exceptions: if i am ill or there are blinds / curtains that can block the sunlight.

Something's strange; i don't recall that the roads were that spacious and trees in my previous few trips via overnight coaches from Singapore to Cameron Highlands were much taller.

My suspicion told me the route was more similar to the one i took from Ipoh to Cameron Highlands back in 2013; the same trip i made with my parents.

Sun was up!

Farmlands with plastic canopies dotting the landscape.

The suspicion i had earlier was confirmed when we entered the towns of Kampung Raja and then followed by Tringkap. If the coach had come in from the usual route, the first town we encountered should be Ringlet.

Another giveaway; driving past the Lavender Garden which i have yet to visit as it wasn't walkable from Brinchang, Tanah Rata or even Kea Farm.

A wedding convoy spotted at Brinchang where the coach had stopped. The action by the coach befuddled me as it didn't stop at the drop-off point at Copthorne Hotel and instead forged towards the biggest town of Cameron Highlands instead.

Anyway, we were asked to drop for breakfast and reassembled an hour later. I didn't mind the suggestion as Brinchang had a lot more to offer, compared to Kea Farm (where Copthorne Hotel is located), when it comes to food.

Memory was fuzzy as i tried to retrace my footsteps to Pau Hei kopitiam and i can see from Alex's face that he just wanted his food as soon as possible.

Breakfast was eventually settled at Restoran Hui Wei, which was right beside Rossa Passadena hotel.

Guess i didn't need to elaborate too much on this section since it had been covered under the itinerary; to cut the story short, the bus / tour agent was asking us to sign up for tour packages under their company. As a free and easy traveler, i feel shortchanged as my intention for buying a coach ticket was to travel from point A to point B, and not to waste my precious overseas time listening to presentations!

More than thirty minutes had passed before we went on our way to Copthorne Hotel. One suggestion for those who didn't want to sit through the presentations - book a hotel at Brinchang so that you can go off straight!

Kavy Hotel - an accommodation that i would not recommend to my friends. For the reasons, do check out my review here. p.s. as five years have passed, things might have improved but as the saying goes; once bitten, twice shy.

There's only so much a photograph can do; using my own eyes, the view in front of me wasn't the signboard branding Cactus Point. It was the yellow flower field that literally drew my breath away.

Busy marketplace at Kea Farm - this is my one regret for the trip as i originally planned to generate a full post for the marketplace. Sadly, the rain that came in the afternoon derailed the plan.

Arrival at Copthorne Hotel (previously known as Equatorial Hotel)! Official check in to the room was at 3 pm and the receptionist couldn't confirm if we could secure the room earlier.

As mentioned previously, i dislike wasting time when i am overseas and we did a crazy thing; we bloody walked all the way from the hotel to BOH Sungei Palas Tea Centre for the marvelous view at the cafe

Instead of quickening our pace back to Copthorne Hotel, i insisted on visiting 188 Vegetables Farm; i was brought there as part of the Agro Delight Tour in 2013

Purpose of my insistence; to buy the raw corns which don't need to be cooked! White corn was priced at RM 4 whereas the yellow white ones were priced at 4 for RM 10. Sample the differences before you decide!

Oops - i had another regret! Why didn't i buy the strawberry popsicle!?!

Unsatisfactory lunch at Josephine Eater & Bar at Cameron Square. To read more, do check out the details at this link

Checked in to the superior room at Copthorne Hotel, dropped our bags, had a nice shower and it's time to hit the street again!

Those itching to pick strawberries can consider going to EQ Strawberry Farm; please be early as all picking had already stopped when we reached at about 3pm.

Started pouring like nobody's business when we were about to leave. I am just so thankful to have purchased disposable rain coats at Cameron Square.

Visited the Butterfly Farm! Click here for more information.

If you have time, there's another Butterfly Garden next door that you can visit!

We hurried to Ee Feng Gu Apiary as the rain had finally stopped.

Now on our way back to Copthorne Hotel and i thought this would be the best time to highlight the two places that Alex and i frequently walked past on day one; four times in fact. You can refer to the above map for locations of Holidays Park and Cameron Square.

Holidays Park - essentially an amusement park for kids with stalls on the side selling farm produce, food, souvenirs and others. Not much of an interest to me, honestly.

Cameron Square - Cameron Highlands' only shopping mall although it didn't seem to be fully operational with level two still relatively empty.

Aside from having quite a number of F&B outlets, the shopping mall was surrounded with kitsch decorations offering plenty of photo opportunities.

Given the dismal lunch, Alex needed more protein inputs and it's only logical (for him) to get the soft boiled eggs from Old Town White Coffee cafe!

You know where's the place for the fastest yet complimentary WiFi at Cameron Highlands? It's definitely at Old Town White Coffee cafe in Cameron Square and i can attest to its speed!

Garlic toast to the fill the gaps in my stomach! Now that i have my own house, i realised garlic toast isn't too hard to make even though i had a tendency to burn mine!

How the hell did the small truck get to the hillside!? And its position was rather precarious as rolling forward by a few meters would increase its momentum to drop head down to the busy main road below.

Good and nice to have although no one seemed to be using it. Even in Singapore, take up for eco initiatives was slow and the blue bins placed at housing estates can be filled up with non-recyclable materials at times.

Back to Copthorne Hotel

The highlands weather can be unpredictable; rain came and went and the view captured from my balcony changed from having clear sky to dark clouds and then to misty in just a few hours.

An hour later, it was the beautiful sight of rainbow and together with it, the hue of sunset shining upon the farmlands as it descended into night!

What shall we have for dinner? Obviously a signature steamboat meal which warmed our tummies at the nearby Chef Weng. For review, click here

There were a number of massage parlours next to Chef Weng and since we did so much walking that day, we figured we should pamper our legs and strolled into Fucon Reflexology.

Session by the PRC masseur was painful but she managed to press at the right acupoints that drew pain and relief at the same time. The WiFi sucked big time and i had difficulties logging in.

Price list for your reference.

Night was still young and our by-then-pretty-sore legs brought us to the 18 Celsius Cafe at Copthorne Hotel; want to guess what we order?

Even i was amazed by the capacity of my stomach; it was only about an hour ago that i was complaining that i couldn't stuff another item in at Chef Weng yet i could still manage matcha latte and a slice of butter cake.

Restoran Yao Yat Wan Tan Mee @ Cameron Highlands [Near Copthorne Hotel]

Some people love the convenience of having breakfast and accommodation together in one single rate whereas i have always been the type that insists on not having the bundled breakfast if the option is available.

Without breakfast means i am forced to seek my own and that's precisely what i want; explore the hotel surroundings for local eats. At Cameron Highlands, we chose one that's near to Copthorne Hotel as we had a coach to catch at 10am; Restoran Yao Yat!

Service was Hong Kong style so please be prepared for straightforward ordering with a heavy dosage of impatience. Other than that, it didn't take long for us to have our plates of wan tan mee placed on the table.

Wanton noodle was the sweet black sauce, Cantonese tyre and i generally had no complaint about it except for maybe the noodles which were a bit tough. However, the dumplings were pretty good with bits of prawns that you wouldn't normally see in the Singapore style wanton noodles. Soup was unimpressive.

Sunrise Spectacular Tour from Titiwangsa Tours & Travel @ Cameron Highlands [Malaysia]

I was upset that my precious time was waylaid by the tour agent at Cameron Highlands but this didn't stop me from signing up the Sunrise Spectacular Tour at RM 65 per person.

Now, i never have much luck with prearranged plans to catch the sunrise (read: Hehuanshan Sunrise) and had in fact a bad omen about this. However, it was the only one out of the four basic packages that i have yet to take up.

Leisure Tour was taken in 2011 (you may click here for the information), as with the Nature Discovery Tour (check out here). Agro Delight Tour was later in 2013 (click here) in my road trip with my parents conquering Ipoh, Cameron Highlands and Kuala Lumpur.

Coming back to the Sunrise Spectacular, i was up at 5 am and the mini passenger van was punctual in picking us up from Copthorne Hotel at 6 am. Driving in the darkness along the mountainous road, we arrived at our destination in less than 15 minutes!

Our spot next to a dilapidated building; even though it was chilly, it couldn't compare to the near-zero temperature encountered at Taiwan's Hehuanshan where i almost literally died from hypothermia.

The sight in front of us which was unblocked by towering trees with mountain peaks peeking from the clouds that enveloped them.

Waiting for sunrise was like almost like fishing without a bait and with plenty of time to spend, i took like a hundred over photographs; many of which turned out blur due to the lack of lighting.

And unlike this gentleman in this photograph, i am too lazy to bring along a tripod and don't have sufficient money to upgrade my camera to a full frame one.

A box of light breakfast was provided together with hot tea / coffee. Curious to know what's inside the box? I would share the "insides" at the end of this post.

Road we came from; my fuzzy memory told me i had been on the road before and it's only on my way down that i realised it's the same road bringing us to Mount Brinchang and Mossy Forest!

The waiting game as the sky slowly brightened up; the guide cum driver shared the photographs he had taken using his phone in the numerous trips he had made for the tour and they were indeed spectacular. The question then was; would we be as lucky?

Standing on farmland; i was mindful not to tread on working fields that had lettuces waiting to be harvested later in the morning.

It was too cloudy and almost the same scenario at Hehuanshan; on one hand, i wasn't hopeful while on the other hand, before the last minute, who can accurately predict nature?

To be sure i am directly in front of the sun when it pops out, i even activated the compass app to ensure i am right in the east! Well, the sun rises from the east and i am guessing it would be true east.

Two orange hues appeared and i can literally feel the heart dropped from everyone's stomach. All the time in wait for the perfect moment and it failed to materialise.

Thankfully, the guide had managed out expectation beforehand; hence, we had kind of prepared for it. Instead of lamenting over the misfortune, why not make use of the time to take goofy photos! I like the THEIR spirit!

Blaring loud music, the pickup with over ten persons at its back zoomed up the road to Mount Brinchang; disregarding the fact that they were creating a disturbance to humans and wild animals residing on the mountain.

Like him, i couldn't believe my luck. By the way, Alex didn't give two-hoot about the sunrise and was happily snoozing in the van! This was exactly what he did at Hehuanshan too!

Last look before we boarded the mini passenger van.

Driving past this humongous strawberry park known as the Mountain Strawberry Farm where you can pick strawberries and harvest fresh vegetables! I recalled seeing the signboard for the farm in my trek to BOH Sungei Palas tea centre

Vegetable farm that was jutting out of the hillside, just like the iconic cafe at BOH Tea Centre

As a consolation, there was a stopover in the middle.

With a view that literally took my breath away - coupled with the refreshing mountain air, it would have been perfect if the sun were to push its glaring face out!

On our way and spotted a familiar sight; the jutting out cafe that i mentioned two paragraphs before! To assist you in identifying the location, refer to the red arrow.

Yes, we were driving on the same road that we walked on the day before to BOH Sungei Palas tea centre! Memorable indeed and definitely not something we would be keen to try in the future!

Before 7.40 pm, we were back at the lobby of Copthorne Hotel; time taken was only about 1 hr and 40 minutes although the itinerary had indicated 2 and a half hours. Well, there wasn't a spectacular sunrise and personally, i don't see the point of wasting my time just to meet the duration which was also an estimation.

Curious to know what's inside?

Ta-dah! Sandwiches, biscuits and two pastries; hardly a light breakfast in my opinion but they were okay tasting. I needed a more satisfactory meal; somewhere along the line of nasi lemak, carrot cake, wanton mee etc.

The Delicious Ramly Burger from Ming Ang Food Court @ Yong Peng Stopover [Malaysia]

Mention Ming Ang and i would likely subject you to the great affection i had for the heong peah sold at the bakery next to the food court at Yong Peng; a major stopover and rest stop in Malaysia for coaches originating from or heading to Singapore.

Now, there's another item that you would find me talking about when you next talk to me about Ming Ang; the ramly burger stall that's right at the entrance!

Yes, i was famished when i arrived at Yong Peng as it was past 7 pm and the last decent meal i had was at 9 am! During the long coach journey from Cameron Highland, my stomach did have some inputs, albeit stuff that my mum would frown upon; chocolates, strawberry pocky sticks etc.

I almost cried when i unwrapped the waxed paper covering my order of piping hot ramly burger beef with egg and cheese; i had never been this hungry before!

Not sure if it's due to the hunger pang; this was easily the best ramly burger i ever had i my whole 36 years of life! The beef patty was juicy with the unmistakable ramly burger marination that was so addictive; many Singaporeans couldn't resist buying a few back whenever they were in Malaysia!

It looked nothing like the ones on the menu board but i actually slowed down my wolfing down so that i can savour the delicious taste for a little while longer! Trust me, it was an internal fight as i deliberated whether i should purchase a second one!

Crispy Pancake (Used to be at Change Alley) - Now at Yishun 81 Food Court (The One with the Famous Chicken Rice) @ Yishun Central [Singapore]

$

0
As a polytechnic student more than fifteen years ago, i often met up with my elder sister near her workplace at Raffles Place for lunch and many a time, we will also end up buying a few pieces of min chiang kueh (aka local pancakes / 面煎粿) from a particular stall in a coffee shop at Change Alley.

My family loved the pancakes and expressed their sadness when the stall disappeared. For my elder sister and i, it was more than being sad as the pancakes were packaged as one singular entity with the chatty yet forgetful stall owner who never seemed to lose his cool. It's no longer just the pancakes we miss but also the uncle.

Imagine my shock when i was done having hokkien mee at Yishun Central and walked past the above stall in the same coffee shop! I immediately texted my sister: "Remember the uncle we used to buy pancakes from? The talkative one? He set up shop in Yishun"!

This is the uncle, looking as if he didn't change a single bit except for maybe more white hair. I, on the other hand, am fatter, rounder and sprouting a significant amount of white hair.

I am posting the menu earlier so that i can explain the unique ordering that's invented by the uncle himself as his memory has never been good and back at Raffles Place, he often mixed up customers' orders! Anyway, do refer to the abbreviations as indicated above; P for Peanut, SC for sweet corn, CH+OR for cheese and oreo etc.

Pens are provided for you to write down your order on the paper bag that would eventually house one of your pancakes! My order was P x 1 and D x 1. p.s. i did notice that the menu had expanded to include oreo and even mixed savoury min chiang kueh like cheese + hotdog + egg.

Peanut Pancake
A disclaimer first - you would not like the pancakes here if you prefer them with fluffy batter and satisfyingly thick texture.

This is almost similar to the crunchy type (the kind that breaks into a million pieces once you bite it) but slightly thicker to prevent the crumbs from falling all over the table.

Peanuts were fresh without the bitterness that some pancake stalls had and the batter was eggy with just a touch of saltiness; perfect as a light afternoon snack! My recommendation is not to eat the pancakes when they are hot! Cool them down so that the crust hardens further for a chewier bite. Piece of advice - open up the paper bag so that the hot vapour inside can escape.

Durian Pancake
Ordering the durian pancake would catch close friends by surprise as they would know i like durians as durians and dislike them in other forms like in coffee, in cakes etc. However, the signboard proudly branded durian crispy pancake and i thought i should give it a try and some support despite my misgiving.

Visually, i should have been excited by the generous spread of durian paste and i indeed was until i took a chunk off the pancake; it was bland with a bitter aftertaste that tasted absolutely weird on a hot pancake! I shall stick with my normal peanut, red bean or chocolate pancakes next time.

Last Day of the Cameron Highlands Trip - It's Really A Short Visit!

$
0
0

"I must be crazy to have woken up so early on a supposedly relaxing trip to the highlands in Malaysia"; the aforementioned was the exact thought that ran through my brain as i struggled to pull myself out of bed.

Reason for waking up at such ungodly hour - we had signed up for the sunrise spectacular tour by Titiwangsa! Click here to find out if we are lucky.

Final look at the scenery from the balcony of our superior room at Copthorne Hotel before we checked out. At this point, I did regret not staying for an extra night but judging from the dark clouds, the impending rain would likely keep us indoors.

The light breakfast provided during the tour didn't appeal to either of us and we proceeded to the Restoran Yao Yat for its canto style wanton mee after storing our bags with the luggage counter at Copthorne Hotel!

Took a picture of this map at the hotel's lobby while waiting for the Konsortium (or its partner) coach to arrive - not drawn to scale is acceptable but to have the location of Copthorne Hotel placed wrongly on the map isn't.

Time was 11 am and we had been kept waiting for an hour. Pick up was supposed at 10 am and instruction stated that we should arrive 30 minutes before then. By then, i had called up Konsortium in Singapore and was requested to wait for a return call while the gentleman checked with the driver. I of course suspected that the coach was also held up at Brinchang (as we were in Day One) where a tour agent would hop onto the bus and persuade passengers on the coach to sign up for their tour packages!

The bus arrived at about 11.38 am and me being me, i asked the passengers who just dropped off if they had gone through the "marketing". Answer was affirmative although they also did comment that there was a jam up the mountain.

I am totally understanding if there is a jam which couldn't be helped. However, the additional talk isn't necessary when you are already late to pick up your customers; it's unprofessional and irresponsible! By the time we left Copthorne Hotel, it was close to noon; an utter waste of 2 hours.

Venting my frustration aside, i am still looking forward to my next trip to Cameron Highlands and i think i would either stay at a hotel in Brinchang or maybe the above Nova Hotel which appeared to have a direct link to Cameron Square and was conveniently located to a number of attractions. Whatever the case, i am swearing off Konsortium.

Jam right outside Cameron Square. As it was the Deepavali weekend, it's expected to have thongs of non-Hindu visitors driving up to the highlands to spend the holiday.

Thriving market at Tringkap! As coaches from Singapore don't have a designate drop-off / pickup point at one of Cameron Highlands' smallest towns, i bet most of us have never been to this market.

The Rose Valley right behind - taking the coach is one of the transport modes available to Singaporeans. The other option which i am seriously considering in my next trip, is to take a plane to Ipoh and then self drive up to Cameron Highland!

These old school shophouses were in fact pretty common in Singapore about three decades ago. I remember seeing some opposite Nee Soon camp when i was a kid.

Snaking traffic appeared at certain sections and not the entire stretch of road leading to the highlands. The opposite way, going down, was generally quite alright except for the times when a few rogue cars wanted to overtake.

Lavender Garden seemed to be a great hit as the carpark was filled and cars that didn't find a lot choose to park at the roadside; making the narrow road even narrower.

Disappearing views of the canopy-topped farmlands as the coach continued its journey down the highlands.

Strawberry Moment Dessert Cafe - there used to be a branch at Brinchang which was way more convenient. At its present location, the only way i can get there is to either self drive or engage a driver.

Smoother traffic.

Wild orchids everywhere and it's so hard to get a decent shot of them while the coach was in motion. I finally got the above shot when the coach stopped because of a roadwork ahead.

The roadwork which resulted in the passing of only one direction and the cue had to be taken from the worker with the stop and go sign.

Hm.... a sheltered driveway? I don't see the need of it unless (i am guessing here) the structure itself is to stabilise the hill to prevent landslides.

Dark clouds floating up the highlands; the rain would likely be worse than the ones we encountered the day before. Good luck to the travellers in the highlands!

With the appearance of the karst formations, i knew we had arrived at the bottom of the mountain range. Frankly, don't you think it's a bit sad that the human touch has deformed nature's beauty?

Sign of the word "Ipoh" on the roadside; once again, this confirmed my suspicion that the coach was using a rather unconventional way to Cameron Highlands. In the past, they would drive up the mountain from another gateway further south which is nearer to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

We were asked to switch buses here as the original bus was said to have broken down before it went up the mountain that morning. Strangely, i didn't hear that from the lady who alighted from the coach earlier; she only mentioned the jam.

Nevertheless, i just wanted to get back to Singapore as it was close to 2pm and if we were in Ipoh, it would easily be another 6 hours or more.

Oh, are we going up to Cameron Highlands again? Nope as this was the gateway i mentioned earlier; the one that coaches originating from KL and Singapore would take; via the Tapah / Kampar route along the North South Highway.

Started pouring shortly after; an environment damn conducive for sleeping! I dozed off as with Alex and didn't realise the coach had stopped at a rest stop for passengers to buy lunch until we were about to drive off.

My lunchner (combination of lunch and dinner) in Ming Ang (Yong Peng) at 7 pm! Both Alex and i were famished and i wolfed down a Ramly Burger that tasted so marvelicious

Can't remember what Alex had although he had to order his tea leaves eggs! The burger was hardly sufficient to curb my finger and i paid for three extra eggs.

I didn't forget to roam the supermarket and purchase the super good heong peah from Ming Ang. Trust me, they are one of the best brands around when it comes to heong peah (in Singapore, we call it chestnut pastry; 马蹄酥).

Tuas checkpoint at 9 pm! By the time we cleared immigration, alighted at Yuan Ching to take a cab and reached home, it was about 10.30 pm! Now, did i mention this was supposed to be a relaxing trip?

Stung by Hornet Along the Walk to Kawah Rengganis @ Bandung [Indonesia]

Bad luck used to surround me when i am overseas (think car accident at Jeju Island, major ailment at Maldives) and without any significantly unusual incident in my past few trips, i thought the aura of misfortune has finally been banished to the far end of the world.

Not yet - it descended on me once again in my recent journey to Bandung at Indonesia! Things were running smoothly and i was happily taking picture after picture along the hike to the pretty undeveloped Kawah (Crater) Rengganis.

I heard a whirring sound and the next thing i knew, i felt a sharp pain on my head! My immediate response was to flick off whatever was on my head and that's when an unexpected second jolt of pain shot through my ring finger! Guessing i shouldn't provoke whatever was on my head further, i quickened my footsteps to chase after my family a few hundred meters away!

Thankfully, we were near to the village and a villager, upon seeing that "thing" on a my head, stopped whatever she was doing and ran into the hut to grab a "tool" to remove the "thing"!

Needing to know what the "thing" was (and for the purpose of this blog post), i told my sister to take a few pictures on your phone for record.

Can someone enlighten me on what this is? I doubt it is a bee since it managed to sting twice and i strongly believe it to be a hornet! Judging from the pictures on internet, it could likely be an European hornet or an Asian giant hornet!

While ordering another villager to purchase a pill from the village shop / clinic, this makcik skilfully swatted the hornet off my head and proceeded to rub raw garlic on the affected area.

She didn't forget my finger too and vigorously rubbed the garlic against the spot where the hornet had stung me. Pill arrived and i gulped it together with water my sister had brought along.

Picture with the villagers who helped one way or another (i had that smiley face on as i was bloated; i choose to believe it was the hornet venom). To be frank, i was so touched by the villagers' kind gestures as they honestly didn't have to yet choose to help as much as they could to reduce my pain and discomfort! Needless to say, i will prefer to call them my saviours for whom i am eternally grateful too.

Throbbing pain with a slight swell on my ring finger; i could still proceed with my journey and in fact enjoyed Kawah Rengganis so much that i could count it as one of the must-gos for travellers visiting Bandung! Shall share more about it in due course.

By the second day, the swelling had expanded to cover the entire ring finger with a redness not seen on other fingers and it was darn itchy. I refrained from seeing a local doctor as i am worried the language barrier might worsen my condition and only visited my family doctor when i am back in Singapore.

Pain didn't subside and there was a stiff tenderness whenever i moved the finger. Strangely, the head was totally in "working condition" and i couldn't even identify the spot where the hornet had stung me.

Redness surrounding the fingernail - my real reason for visiting the family doctor was because the swelling was preventing me from carrying my weights and doing my exercises and it didn't help to realise i have reached a new high on the weighing machine!

The medications (antibiotics, anti-itch, anti swelling) work fabulously and i think i would be able to go back to my exercise regime tomorrow! Yipee! The 5 days, 4 nights Bandung would be out soon!

Owls & Other Wildlife (Snakes etc) for Sale @ Bandung City [Indonesia]

Happiness would normally envelop me whenever i catch sight of an owl in front of me but in this case of a barn owl at Bandung city, sadness would be a more appropriate emotion.

It was for sale, together with another adorable baby owl that wasn't chained yet seemed unable to fly away from its fate as a commercial product.

I maintained a staunch belief that wildlife should be left in the wilderness unless it is no longer able to protect itself or has gotten too accustomed to a domesticated, human--resulted life. As someone who couldn't communicate in Bahasa, i am unaware of where they come from although there is a high likelihood the owls were captured in the wild.

The seller wasn't displeased with me taking photographs and had in fact, gamely put his hand underneath the baby owl to force it to climb onto his fingers for a better picture! I almost fainted as the little bird was screeching with utmost displeasure.

Other than birds, there were a few tanks containing snakes, iguanas and hamsters! As rodent is a main food source for snakes, i am wondering if the hamsters would be utterly freaked out with the presence of so many predators right next to them.

As someone who is terrified of snakes, my selfish worry was where my legs should run too if any of the snakes were to break free!

My natural instinct would be to freeze; hoping that the snake would go for those who are moving. Plan B was to grab the two balls of hedgehogs and throw them at the runaway snake! Frankly, i am not sure what i will do.

Sugar gliders - there was a period of time that they were quite popular as pets in Singapore. Other more-pet-like animals available for sale included rabbits and cats in another makeshift store right in front of the owl-snakes one.

The pop-up stores were easy to find, next to a main road and not hidden in some dark alleys as in the case of Singapore where the sale of wildlife is strictly prohibited unless a license is provided.

=====

Location Map
The stores were within walking distance from Best Western Premier La Grande hotel and if you are interested to check out the wildlife, it's best to go in the evening, from maybe 5 pm.

Interesting Sights on Bandung Streets - Monkeys as Money Making Tools @ Indonesia

$
0
0
As a developing country, there are sightings encountered / chanced upon in Indonesia that are uncommon in a developed city state like Singapore; the post here was an example.

Another one was of chained monkeys performing tricks and acrobatic acts to drivers and passengers of motor vehicles stuck in traffic jams. This would have been a cute sight; making me wide eyed when i was a child.

Now that i am older, the first thought would be "i feel sorry for the monkey" but in a country where monthly GDP per capita is less than S$500, it's just a tool necessary for survival. \

If i am in that condition, i might have done the same thing. It's sad when we hear of people condemning others simply because of conflicting principles and ideologies without understanding the underlying reasons.

My key concern isn't on the "act" - it's the well-being of the animal. Is the long tailed macaque well taken off? Does it have sufficient food / water? Even in a developed country like Singapore, there were numerous cases of mistreated dogs in puppy mills, crowded conditions in pet shops giving rise to hygiene issues.

Point is - who are we to judge given the scant information we have? p.s. i wouldn't have agreed to having the young monkey inhaling the second hand smoke although a smoker would not have given two hoots about it.

5 Days, 4 Nights Itinerary to Bandung, the Paris of Java @ Indonesia

A few months ago, i was reminiscing the South Korea trip with my crazy sisters and the conversation eventually veered to planning a short five days, four nights getaway and before i knew it, tickets were purchased, hotel was booked and i had in fact returned from the trip earlier this week!

Destination - Bandung in Indonesia! I was surprised that quite a number of friends are not aware of Indonesia's third largest city that's located at a cool altitude of 768 meters; they thought i was referring to the rose syrup drink we have in Singapore that's also known by the same name.

I didn't take as many photographs as i expected (4,000 odd and further pared to less than 3,000) but they were sufficient for me to generate a decent itinerary for publishing on this blog. Links shall be updated in due course. :).

Conversion: S$1 equates to roughly 10,000 rupiah.

Day One(01 December 2016)
Singapore - Bandung
[5.44 am Singapore Time] Arrival by taxi at Terminal 2 of Changi International Airport - compared to a midnight flight (as in the case of the Beijing and Guilin), my body is better attuned to an early morning one.

[8.45 am Singapore Time] Even though we were scheduled to take off at 8 am, the Silk Air plane was delayed for 45 minutes, seemingly due to passengers' luggage that had yet to be loaded and heavy air traffic typical of December school holiday period!

[9.34 am Indonesia Time]  Bandung is an hour behind Singapore and shortly after the picture was taken (about five minutes later), we touched down on the runway of Husein Sastranegara (BDO) airport.

[10.27 am] By the time we cleared immigration and collected our luggage, it was an hour later. To prevent yourself from paying highly inflated taxi fare, buy the ticket from the taxi counter (shown above) before you leave the departure gate. The destination and corresponding fare would be indicated on the ticket (i.e. our journey to Best Western Premier La Grande cost 60,000 rupiah).

Boarding one of the many blue taxis in a row that's just a stone throw from the airport; literally across the road. I wrongly assumed they belonged to the reputable blue bird brand given their blueness.

[10.45 am] Best Western Premier La Grande - a day short of its one year birthday, this is a four-star hotel with over 190 rooms and came equipped with a gym, heated swimming pool (sheltered) and has KFC as its immediate neighbour!

Check-in, as expected, was from 2 pm and we took to the shopping mall (Bandung Indah Plaza) right across the street to jump start our shopping! The hypermarket was our first target as we wanted to run through the products and prices so that we can consolidate and buy everything at one shot on the last day.

[11.52 am] Baso Polos (with egg) from Baso by Mister Baso (that's honestly a mouthful of basos) - checking out the popular local dish that can be found everywhere! Hm..... I prefer my ban mian kosong although it might have been a different story if i was more diligent in seeking out the best in Bandung.

[1.57 pm] Loving the hotel room with a city and mountain view! As my dad didn't join us, i shall be bunking in with my elder sister who sleeps late and wakes up early. Good luck to me!

[3.20 pm] Bathed and rest for a while and we stepped out for the one activity that Bandung is famous for; factory outlet shopping where we conquered Secret, Heritage and Cascade! I am deliberating on having a separate post for outlet shopping as i literally went crazy with their offerings and i don't even shop much in Singapore...

[7.22 pm] It was already so late by the time we were done with outlet shopping! My dinner was an unsatisfying plate of Mie Goreng from Rumah Makan Sedap Purwakarta at Riau Junction.

Day Two(02 December 2016)
Bandung
[6.56 am] After a short workout at the gym, it's time for breakfast at the hotel's Parc De Ville restaurant. Do note that the sun rises at about 5.30 am in Bandung so don't make the mistake, as i did, of forgetting to draw the room's curtains before i slept the night before!

[8.00 am] Our assigned car with a driver (Mr Askan) that we pre-booked way before the trip. The rental rate was 600,000 rupiah per day, maximum 14 hours starting from 8 am and doesn't include driver's meals (50,000 a day), entrance fees to attractions, toll fees and parking charges. You may arrange with Ms Ratna via whatsapp; +62 812-2015-474.

[9.04 am] Bandung is blessed with a lot of natural attractions within a few hours' drive from the main city centre and one of them is the volcanic craters of Mount Tangkuban Perahu! Beautiful place although i baulked at its exorbitant entry price for foreigners (200,000 rupiah per person on weekday)!

[10.30 am] Weather wasn't too good and mum was not keen to hike to the supposedly better looking crater known as Kawah Domas. Hence, we continued our journey to Sari Ater Hot Spring Park where we spent a long two hours gallivanting in the mineral rich water; ticket was 35,000 rupiah per person on weekday. It was much better than the Sabah's Poring Hot Spring

[12.40 pm] Stopped by this tea plantation with a fantastic view. As i just returned from Cameron Highlands, i specifically ruled out any stopover at a tea house. Nevertheless, i couldn't help having my breath being taken away when faced with such scenery.

[2.04 pm] Late lunch at Kampung Daun; a themed restaurant where customers dined in straw huts surrounded by the melodies from birds and the water from nearby stream.

[3.52 pm] Started pouring and temperature started dropping with strong howling wind! Looking at the time, we had roughly only about two hours of daylight before the sun sets for the day.

[4.06 pm] Heavy rain had given way to a light drizzle when we reached Dusun Bambu Family Leisure Park! Mum opted to stay in the warm food court whereas the kids (Joyce, Louise and i) wandered out to explore the attraction!

There's an iconic photo that everyone will take when they are at Dusun Bambu. Sadly, the bird's nests set in the middle of trees were closed due to the potential dangers of falling trees and i had to make do with the Purbasari, a Sundanese restaurant with a theme similar to Kampung Daun; albeit next to a lake.

[6.33 pm] Back in Bandung to dine at the Stone Cafe; well, we were seated on wooden flooring (not stone, not marble, not granite) and it was the night time city view that drew us. loving the Pisang Goreng Keju and Tom Yum Goong too!

Day Three (03 December 2016)
Bandung
[7.30 am] Mr Askan had requested for an earlier timing as we would be going to Kawah Putih (White Crater); a drive of at about two hours. The area was more rural too and with that means plenty of chances to see horse-drawn carriages ferrying passengers along the roads!

[9.01 am] Tickets were separately bought from a shopfront in a town; doubt it is a scam since the amount we paid was no difference from what we had sourced from the web; 50,000 rupiah per person and 150,000 per car (we chose to pay for the car for convenience as we need not wait for the internal shuttle and can reach the crater earlier).

There was a heavy downpour in the morning and the road up to Kawah Putih was blocked by falling trees; Mr Askan suggested going to another attraction first as no estimated timeline was given. Stopping by the Cimahi Tea Plantation along the way as i couldn't forgo the opportunity to take this picture!

[9.48 am] Situ Patenggang - a lake that's located at 1,600 meters above sea level. The lake didn't quite amaze me as much as the boat structure that appeared to have run aground in freakish weather! Admission was 20,000 rupiah per person and 5,000 rupiah for the car.

The calm lake with chalet-like accommodation that can be rented; scenery wise, it was a sight i would love to wake up too but as a whole, the Baofeng Lake at Hunan was more spectacular....

[11.12 am] Started raining cats and dogs again and i am aware this would increase the difficulty for removal of the fallen trees; as expected, the road remained closed.

[11.30 am]  Early lunch at the nearby Saung Gawir even though our initial plan was to partonise Sindang Reret which was much further away. We were still hoping that the trees can be removed soon so that we would not miss the attraction said to be a die-die must visit.

Not complaining about the view at Saung Gawir though and i must say the mountain breeze was most invigorating! Mum couldn't stand the cold and insisted i drew the blinds before she were to freeze to death!

[12.56 pm] Access to Kawah Putih continued to be closed and we went next door to Ranca Upas (entry at 15,000 rupiah per person on weekends) to check out the deer conservation park; park would be an exaggeration as it was more an over-sized pen to hold the deer in so that visitors can buy the carrots at 10,000 rupiah a bag to easily feed them.

[1.36 pm] With a ton of time to spare as nothing was conclusive on the entry to Kawah Putih, Mr Askan proposed driving to a less developed crater known as Kawah Rengganis (admission at 30,000 rupiah per person), which we gamely agreed!

[2.00 pm] This was the time when i got stung by a hornet for no apparent reason! To read more on the incident, please click here

[2.15 pm] With the help of the kind villagers who flicked the hornet that was stuck in my hair, rubbed raw garlic on the stings and helped to buy a pill (guess to dispel poison and reduce swelling), i continued my journey to Kawah Regganis and came to a magnificent world that's almost my definition for paradise! Pity i didn't bring extra clothing to soak in the hot spring!

[4.08 pm] Mum was on the lookout for raw keropok (crackers) that had to be fried at home and we were brought to Sari Manis rest stop where a man was frying tempeh crackers! Eh, how would he drain the oil at the end of the day?

[6.52 pm] The weekends could only mean one thing for the road; traffic jams as residents from Jakarta flocked to Bandung for a weekend getaway. Already closed to 7pm when we decided to eat at Richeese Factory at the Bandung Electronic Centre behind Best Western.

By the way, Richeese Factory sells fried chicken (not cheesecakes) and i was impressed with their spicy hot fire chicken! Interestingly, you can also dip the fried chicken in cheese!

[8.22 pm] Pop-up pet store on along the street but it's your typical pets; there were iguanas, hedgehogs, snakes and even owls! Click here fore more pictures.

Night was still young and both mum and Joyce decided to hit this multiple-level factory outlet shop next to Best Western! I am the lousy one as i left after a while in the outlet shop as my body badly wanted to take a shower and sleep the night away!

Day Four (04 December 2016)
Bandung
[5.30 am] Woke up at this ungodly hour as i can hear my sister preparing for breakfast with my mom. I languished in bed for at least an hour plus before joining them. This fried egg topped with achar and spicy onion soy sauce was so yummy; i had like two plates to myself and shared another plate.

[9.28 am] It's car free day on Sundays for a number of roads in Bandung and thinking there might be carnivals or interesting things to see, we specially walked to the one rather near to Braga Street.

No big scale carnival even though we did chance upon buskers in costumes and a small bazaar for anime lovers. Nothing interesting in fact and the walk in rather warm weather didn't sit in too well with the ladies in my family.

[10.07 am] Took a cab to Paris Van Java; ranked number 8 on tripadvisor, i was totally bored in this huge shopping mall with department store (sogo), loads of eateries and a high number of branded stores. C'mon, we have plenty of them in Singapore and it's not as if there's massive saving to buy the branded products here.

[12.48 pm] Lunch at Pepper Lunch! Don't think i would be reviewing it separately as i was too busy making sure my beef was not overcooked and didn't take any photo after the above.

[4.29 pm] Rumah Mode - the indisputable queen when it comes to outlet shopping in Bandung and we confirmed its title by spending close to three hours shopping! The biggest bag (mom was holding it) is mine.

[6.05 pm] Going the local way for dinner; by the roadside and we were not disappointed; everything was delicious despite the super economical pricing!

[7.23 pm] Kartikasari - Joyce and i volunteered to walk to this famous cake shop that's about 1.3 kilometer so that we would know how much time was needed for the same trip the following morning! Louise and mom didn't join us as they had an appointment for massage.

[8.52 pm] Hypermarket at Bandung Indah Plaza where Joyce went on a shopping spree for last minute purchases since we would be returning back to Singapore on 05 December!

Day Five (05 December 2016)
Bandung - Singapore
[7.29 am] Breakfast time and it's our usual fried egg with toppings! p.s. the toppings were all taken from other dishes in the buffet; an ingenious idea by Joyce!

[8.47 am] Amanda - its fame surpassed Kartikasari for its steamed brownies! We were supposed to walk to Kartikasari but it started drizzling! Since we would be taking a cab anyway; we figured we might as well go to Amanda which is 2.6 kilometers from Best Western.

[9.08 am] Carrying boxes of brownies to be brought back to Singapore, we decided to take a rest at the Korean-imported Caffe Bene as the numerous factory outlets along the road would only be open from 10 am. Both sisters were too bored and started posing with the fake bingsu! See, craziness runs in my family and to be honest, i am not the worst!

[11.00 am] The ladies spent so much time in Episode Fashion House and knowing time wasn't exactly on our side, i explored a few branded outlets in close proximity (i.e. Adidas) on my own. Pricing for those specific-brand outlets was comparable to Singapore and my love is skewed towards those bigger ones offering clothing from numerous brands!

[11.13 am] Once again at Kartikasari! Didn't buy any cake as i doubt we can carry any more. However, we did purchase quite a bit of almond cookies, butter toasts and fried bananas!

[12.58 pm] Late check-out was approved till 1.00 pm and i rushed like mad to tidy my luggage! Last photo of the view in my room before i closed the door.

[1.52 pm] Arrival at bandung airport way ahead of time as the cab that the hotel reception helped to call reached much earlier than expected! By the way, above was the haul we brought back to Singapore and it didn't include our backpacks; out of the loads on the two trolleys, three pieces belonged to me.

Advice for those at Bandung Airport - go through the security scan and check in your luggage first as you can pop out of the airport for Starbucks or additional dining options once you are done.

[2.30 pm] For us, we chose Bim burger and fried chicken where Joyce finally had her cup of Ais Alpukat (Iced Avocado)! By the way, those who couldn't get the brownies from Amanda can buy them at a slightly higher price from a shop inside the airport (before you go through the security scan for check-in).

[3.04 pm] Bearing hopes that there would be more for us to shop / eat after clearing immigration, i am disappointed to find the international departure section to be as big as the above photo shows. At least an hour to go before we can board the plane.

[4.45 pm] Plane departed from Bandung airport, bypassing fluffy clouds, towering mountains, meandering rivers and little dots on the surface.

Travelling at this time would also mean we could catch the amazing sunset from high up in the sky! Luckily, there was an empty window seat facing the west where i could move to!

[7.28 pm Singapore Time] We would have touched down much earlier but the pilot was requested by Changi control tower to hold its position for quite a while before the plane was allowed to land. Guess too much air traffic again. Anyway, home sweet home!

=====

Expenses
  • Airfare + Hotel (Twin Sharing) - S$399 per person
  • Car Rental (includes meal allowance for driver) - 650,000 rupiah a day
  • Entry to Attractions - About 500,000 rupiah per person
  • Miscellaneous (including meals) - S$300 worth of rupiah
  • p.s. bring credit card as major factory outlets would accept them.

Additional Information
  • Prepare loads of small change (2,000 rupiah) as you would need them for parking to attractions and toilets!
  • Starhub users can apply for DataTravel which cost only S$15 / S$20 for 2 / 3 gigabytes of roaming data. I relied heavily on them to bring us around the city without a car!
  • Download Google Translate app on your phone! English isn't widely spoken and often in bits and pieces; having some knowledge on Bahasa Indonesia would be great but if you are as bad as me, having google translate can be extremely helpful.
  • There is almost no pedestrian crossing (i saw just one) and please be careful when you are crossing roads or walking on them when pedestrian walkway is unavailable.

SilkAir Studio - Wireless Inflight Entertainment on Your Mobile Devices

I am a cheapo when it comes to airplane tickets and hence, prefer budget airlines that has no meals, no in-flight entertainment; conveniences i am willing to sacrifice for a significantly cheaper ticket.

Therefore, you can imagine my surprise when i boarded the SilkAir plane to Bandung and couldn't find the dedicated screen that's supposedly right in front of my seat! In anticipation that it would be provided, i didn't download sufficient movies on my phone app and i bet the ceiling screen would likely be a common channel for a bigger audience. :(

Nothing's lost yet - while flipping through the airline's magazine, i chanced upon a schedule for movies. Strange thing to have when there's no in-flight entertainment and that's when i noticed the word "wireless".

There's an instruction leaflet stuffed in the seat pocket in front and i diligently followed the instructions. No more cloud watching which can get boring after a while!

Instructions - switch on your phone, leave it on airplane mode, activate your wireless and connect to either silkair1 or silkair 2. Once connected, go to your browser and type www.silkair.com.

Voila!

Although the use of technology is commendable, there are several shortfalls to SilkAir Studio; screen size is obviously much smaller if you are using a phone as i did, the amount of content also appeared to be a lot more reduced (under action, there is only two movies) and lastly, we are draining the battery of our mobile devices and i didn't see any USB charging ports around me.

Whatever the case, i am happy to be able to watch Expendables 3; a two-hour movie that i couldn't complete on the plane as the flight to Bandung was only two hours and as you know, announcements would disrupt the playing of movie and mobile devices are required to be switched off prior to take off and landing.

Joyce's Innovation - Fried Egg with Acar @ Best Western Premier La Grande Hotel [Bandung]

I dislike hotel breakfast and those who have been following my travel itineraries in this blog would realise that the 'standard package' doesn't really go beyond toast and omelette.

In my most recent trip (to Bandung), things have changed slightly; of course, i must admit that the breakfast served in Best Western Premier La Grande hotel was indeed one of the better ones but there's another reason.

This special fried egg with toppings that didn't come from the egg station! Joyce, given her years of experience as a mother, had innovated and added ingredients she thought would improve the rather plain fried egg.

She literally "stole" the acar that's supposedly for the rice, went to another section where there were numerous sauces and helped herself to the sweet yet spicy onion soy sauce! Nevertheless, i love it so much; i had multiple helpings over the next few days!

Best Western Premier La Grande Hotel Review @ Bandung [Indonesia]

I am confused - there appeared to be three different ways to identify the Bandung hotel that we stayed in; should it be considered as the La Grande Hotel that is managed by the Best Western group under its Premier category?

Never mind, for the sake of this post, let's just take it by the entire chunk; Best Western Premier La Grande Hotel, a four-star establishment with over 190 rooms / suites that just celebrated its first birthday early this month.

An L-shaped building; i understand that the section with balconies facing us in the above photograph was a condotel which would be different from the full fledged hotel we had booked for.

Reception area was a disappointment given the number of rooms under their care - it was small and can be crowded at times. However, extra points must be given for the decorations put up for the upcoming Christmas!

Not sure what was the reason behind the signpost pointing to renowned Lord of the Rings' locations (Rivendell, The Shire and Fangorn Forest) as the space was insufficient to have even a tiny replica of those famous places.

Within the same reception, the operator had managed to squeeze in two Macintosh for those who need to surf the web, read their emails etc. I couldn't find the mouse though even though i presume i could always request from the friendly, always smiling front desk staff.

That's not all; you could also find a container filled with healthy fruit / vegetable infused water to quench your thirst when you return to the hotel. At night, the infused water would be replaced with a pot of coffee and a pot of tea!

Should you ever feel a slight pang of hunger in your tummy, do help yourself to the tray of cookies! I honestly don't require any definition on cookies, which by the way were rather tasty with a nice, aromatic crunch!

Superior Room
The room on the 16th floor (1611) that i shared with my elder sister as my younger sister would be bunking in with my mom; it was decently sized (said to be 29 square meters) with two super single beds.

Another view to give a better visual representation of the size.

Dressing table and a 32-inch LED television with numerous cable channels (claimed to have 62). There's a stark difference to having Joyce, instead of the usual Alex, as my bunk mate. We only switched on the television on day one and for the rest of the days; it was just a black box staring at us when we went to dreamland.

There's a safe for you to keep your valuables; personally, i don't keep money in the safe, only items like passport, lens, iPad etc.

Complimentary two bottles of mineral water (already taken by my sister who is an amazing water guzzler), sachets of coffee and tea, an electric kettle and a mini fridge right underneath.

Mountain view from our room - for those who have been to Bandung, could you identify the mountain right ahead with a rather flat top? It's the famous Tangkuban Perahu (known also as upturned boat due to the shape).

Spick and span washroom with a bidet spray, hair dryer, hot and cold water shower; common items found in most hotels above three stars. Would have loved it better with a rainfall shower!

I was more impressed with the amount of freebies housed in a box; aside from the usually-given bottles of shower and shampoo, conditioner and body lotion, there were also shaving kit, grooming kit, dental kit and sewing kit!

Before i forget, good-speed WiFi was provided in the room!

Other Amenities
Fitness centre on level four which was mentioned to be small in one of the tripadvisor reviews. I thought it was okay as i had been to an even tinier one at Seoul's Manu Hotel

Nevertheless, the weights in the gym would be sufficient to keep me happy. Pity the hornet sting i got on my finger on day three totally ruined my plan to keep my biceps in shape!

One of the main draws for Best Western Premier La Grande Hotel was the swimming pool on the same floor as the fitness centre. As with the hotel, it featured the same L-shaped.

In addition to its sheltered yet open concept, the water in the pool was also heated! As expected, families with children love it and i did chance upon them rather frequently on weekends when the hotel filled up with vacationers.

Breakfast Buffet
Situated on the third floor of the hotel, Parc De Ville restaurant would be the place for our daily buffet breakfast that's scheduled from 6 to 10 am.

Spread was extensive; featuring local delights like Nasi Uduk, stewed beef, local porridge, mie goreng, butter chickens, kuehs, local fried fritters yet maintained the common cereals, egg station, pancakes, breads and toasts, salad bar etc.

Help yourself to the spices and maybe you can come out with a delicious concoction as in the case of my elder sister who thought up a superbly good fried egg with acar and sweet spicy onion soy sauce

Numerous drinks were available; including infused water! And if you are looking for local herbal beverage, you can go for the two pots next to the Nasi Uduk station; one tasted like honey drink while the other has a ginger tinge to it.

My mom enjoyed the breakfast so much; she literally spent two hours there every morning. To be fair, she was also waiting for her lazy bum son to get ready and for her gym-crazy daughter to finish her gym regime.

There's a KFC that's less than 40 steps from the hotel's entrance!

The hotel is also right across Bandung Indah Plaza; a good sized mall with plenty of dining and retail options. If you are keen to catch a movie, there's a cinema in the same shopping centre and when i checked the pricing for Underworld: Blood Wars; it's only 25,000 rupiah a ticket!

Flower Wreath Congratulatory Boards in Indonesia @ Best Western Premier La Grande Hotel (Bandung)

Travelling overseas can be an eye-opener as the differences in cultures can be extremely interesting, even if it is a few hours of plane ride out of Singapore!

On the second day of our Bandung trip, we noticed a lot of boards decorated with flowers lining up outside the main lobby of Best Western Premier La Grande Hotel and it didn't take us long to realise they were the Singapore equivalence of flower wreaths and bouquet stands!

Sent by companies to congratulate the hotel on its first anniversary; i personally feel that the design was rather homogeneous with size being the obvious factor to make one's board stand out.

This deviated slightly from Singapore's concept which focuses heavily on the use of flower display to compete with one another. In Indonesia's case, fresh flowers constituted less than 50% of the surface area and although pretty in their own way, the placement of each bouquet was nothing out of the norm.

To "stick" the bouquets and prevent them from falling prey to this thing we know as gravity, there's a need to prop them using sticks and flexible wires that could only be seen when you peer nearer.

Strips of styrofoam were bundled up to have that "pom pom" feel.

Even the messages were either printed on the canvas or glued using cut styrofoam letters; frankly, not very eco-friendly even though Singapore florists use the styrofoam too, given their lightness.

In case you thought the words were made up of chrysanthemum flowers, look closer; they were just strips of yellow paper! So, which one do you prefer; Singapore or Indonesia's version of flower wreaths?

Xi Xiang Feng Yong Tau Foo with Chee Cheong Fun (喜相逢猪肠粉酿豆腐) @ Ang Mo Kio Central 724 Hawker Centre [Singapore]

The rule of thumb, when selecting a good stall (for meals) at a hawker centre in Singapore, is to look at the length of the queue in front of it; however, don't be too quick to join the queue as i did in this case at Xi Xiang Feng Yong Tau Foo!

Signs informing patrons to choose their food before queuing up were plastered all over the stall yet i was blind enough not to notice them! Thankfully, i was notified by the kind gentleman right in front of me and hence, didn't waste time joining the queue for nothing.

Now, this is a popular stall in Ang Mo Kio Central 724 Hawker Centre and the wait can be agonizing; i waited for about 25 minutes before i got my food and this was bad news for a person who had a relatively light lunch that day.

As with all yong tau foo stalls, you would be given a selection of ingredients and please be ready to answer the following questions when you hand over the bowl; noodles or chee cheong fun, dry or soup, chilli or no chilli, okay to add in bean sprouts and vegetables?

Friends who know me well would be aware my heart usually goes for deep fried stuff and as you can see from the above, there's absolutely no sign of greens! Okay, i felt a tad guilty before i finalised my selection and threw in a piece of brinjal with fish paste!

Let's start with the cloudy soup first.

Boiled with a ton of yellow beans, it was rich with an intense savouriness that's likely to have come from the ikan bilis and mother hens; latter was said to have "been simmered for more than six hours"!

I opted for chee cheong fun instead of having the usual yong tau foo plain and totally didn't regret it; the chee cheong fun was soft without leaving remnants in between my teeth and complemented well with the rest of the "liao" (translated from ingredients in Hokkien).

Almost everything tasted good under the drizzle of sweet sauce that's further peppered with the fragrance of sesame seeds. Exceptions were the tau kwa with fish paste which tasted burnt and a fried ball that didn't impress.

With a table full of food for just three persons, it's a surprise we managed to nearly clean up the entire bowl of Yong Tau Foo with Chee Cheong Fun!

The amount of food we had; by the way, the white bee hoon in the picture is the AMK branch of the blessing seafood white bee hoon i tried before in Chong Pang hawker centre!

Rumah Makan Sedap Purwakarta @ Riau Junction [Bandung]

Our first day in Bandung was mostly spent exploring the various shopping outlets within walking distance from Best Western Premier La Grande hotel and by the time we were done, hunger had set in and we eventually settled with a food court along the way at Riau Junction!

Of course i must have Indonesian food and remembering how amazing Indonesian style mee goreng is, i know exactly what to order and found what i wanted Rumah Makan Sedap Purwakarta stall.

Mie Goreng Special - when this was placed on my table by the stall helper, i knew something was amiss; the noodles themselves were not the "indomie" type and seemed more like the yellow type that i personally abhor.

Though intensely fried with soya sauce (hence the darker shade), the taste wasn't the Indonesian style mee goreng i fondly remember and it was also wetter than the authentic version. I am not sure if it's a matter of a different preference across regions since Indonesia is humongous!

And there was absolutely nothing special about this mie goreng; the most i can give credit for was the fried egg on top.

Baso by Mister Baso @ Bandung Indah Plaza [Indonesia]

Bakso (or baso) is one of Indonesia's national dishes and you can find them literally in all parts of the country (i heard)! I have been to Indonesia on quite a few occasions but i never did find the motivation to try bakso until the recent Bandung trip!

Reason being that mum prefers soup stuff whereas her son would have loved to eat deep fried food every meal! Anyway, we faced a dilemma on what to eat for our first meal in Bandung and eventually cast our votes for Baso by Mister Baso; the double baso wording on the signage was some sort of mental encouragement for us.

Ordering was a challenge as the staff couldn't speak much English and rescue came in the form of my mom who could still speak a smattering of Bahasa!

Ice Tea - knowing Indonesian drinks are skewed towards sweetness, mom specifically requested for less sugar. This glass of iced tea was refreshing even though strangely, there was a grass jelly flavour to it.

Mini Tahu Pong - basically fried bean curd in cube form that was served piping hot! It tasted nicely fermented although not on the level of stinky tofu. A saucer of salt was provided; redundant in my opinion as the bean curds were super addictive on their own. We almost wanted to re-order it!

Es Kacang Merah - the Indonesian style ice kacang; this was sweet, just too sweet for our liking! My younger sister is a dessert lover and even she couldn't take the sweetness!

Ayam Goreng Tulang Lunak - fried chicken and it's not ayam penyet; infused heavily with lemongrass, the chicken meat was a bit mushy and mom suspected it had been immersed in water to make chicken soup before being deep fried to reduce wastage.

Baso Polos Merah - the meatballs i had was beef whereas mom went with the chicken one; sadly, the texture for both type of meatballs was too tough for my liking. Even the soup was unimpressive; plain and a bit like bee hoon soup. Healthy, nevertheless.

Sate Ayam - chicken satay; my usual take would be pork but Indonesia is a Muslim country and i can totally make do with chicken, mutton or even beef. Taste wise, i couldn't help comparing them with yaki tori as the chicken skin was attached; chicken meat was however in smaller pieces!

You know what's better than the satay? Mixing the plain rice with the satay peanut sauce - it tasted so yummy; i practically cleaned up all the white rice on the plate!
