Sukiya (すき家) - Eat All You Can Sukiyaki & Shabu Shabu! @ Bugis Plus +

Fans of Sukiyaki and Shabu Shabu would love to hear of this buffet version, perfected with an unlimited supply of premium pork, chicken and beef!

Offering a selection of four basic soup bases, i could not remember what got into us that day as we decided to go with sukiyaki and touyu miso for our pot instead of their signature shabu shabu! Thinking back, it could likely be the novelty of trying something different.

I was deliberating whether to post this picture as the soups didn't appear to be very appetising with all the frothy bubbles. Nonetheless, at least this would give you a rough idea on the pot used.

The above bowl of mish and mash was served at the same time which i presumed was for the sukiyaki stock. It was a return trip back to the kitchen since the expensive meat was our ultimate aim and we had not allocated any stomach space for the fresh vegetables!

Personally, i was eyeing the stuff at the healthy bar! Why bother giving me a standard bowl when i can take what i like from the bar like cheese tofu, cuttlefish balls etc?!

Not exactly healthy stuff if you ask me but the important thing is that you can pile up as much as you want! Do note that you don't get fish meat or fresh prawns; a major disadvantage when Chinese steamboat restaurants in the nearby Liang Seah street are offering a much wider variety.

Of course, i am aware that Sukiya is marketed nothing less than a Japanese restaurant and hence would have targeted a different clientele. Moreover, the high level of freshness (for the food) and overall cleanliness of the place have, no doubt, won it many loyal customers.

My not-so-healthy selection from the healthy bar!

OOOoooooo our premium, thinly-sliced meats! Hardcore beef lovers can choose to top up S$6.90 for a serving of wagyu beef platter! I was already very satisfied with my beef even though i would likely order the wagyu the next time i am at Suki-ya. Must try mah!

Before starting the feast, always visit the dipping sauce section and create your own concoction to go with the meat! Sadly, goma tare (sesame sauce) was not available and i had to make do with the delish spicy peanut sauce.

I love mine with chopped spring onions!

Guess i don't have to explain further on what you should do with the meat. Overall, i had to admit i was surprised by the high quality of meat given its very wallet-friendly buffet prices.

Concluding the filling meal with a bowl of self served vanilla ice cream (tasted similar to McDonald's ice cream, albeit a creamier version) peppered with rainbow sprinklers and cornflakes!

Black Fried Carrot Cake @ Xin Ji [鑫記菜頭粿] - 22 Lorong 7 Toa Payoh Kim Keat Palm Food Centre

Again and again, i was left greatly disappointed with my recent selection of carrot cake stalls; none so far has managed to match the epic one i had near my block which pulled the shutters after a rental spike.

But, the seeking continues! That hungrygowhere app on my phone was frequently utilised in the search for nearby good eats and it brought me to block 22 lorong 7 toa payoh yesterday!

Manned by an elderly couple, i was suspecting this would not be the sweet, caramelised black carrot cake diced up into hundreds of tiny crunchy pieces that i always prefer.

I was right in my suspicion! More often than not, you would see me writing how much i hate this, why did i even choose this, blame the hungrygowhere reviewer who recommends this etc etc.

Weirdly, the meal was a nostalgic journey back to my childhood; a simple plate of fuss free carrot cake that downplayed sweet sauce and retained the traditional flavour well loved by the older generation!

Not my 'type' although i have to give it some credit for the nice recollection of childhood memory.

On a warm and sunny day, it's hard to resist the temptation to simply walk past the dessert stall without buying anything! And it's all the more difficult when it had also been awarded a certificate of excellence "in the culinary arts on Cheng Tng"; a thirst-quenching sweet soup adored by many Singaporeans.

I knew i have to get my hands on a serving even if it risks adding another kilogram to my weight!

Priced at only S$1 a bowl, this would likely be the cheapest cheng tng you can ever get in Singapore! For my case, i topped up another 50 cents for extra gingko nuts; necessities for the ageing brain.

Other than the low price, my taste buds could not make out what was so excellent about the cheng tng; there was barely the hint of longan in the broth, a main player for this dessert, with even mom commenting that it tasted like the thinner version of sugary syrup used for ice jelly!

Maybe i should not be too fast to point the accusing finger at Singapore Media Press, the awarder of the excellence certificate as that certificate was dated seven years ago!

House on The Pier - An Unfruitful Visitto the Mysterious House @ Lim Chu Kang [Singapore]

Remember that mysterious abandoned house i saw at the end of my Lim Chu Kang road expedition

I have finally made time to have a better look with a group of colleagues from NUS! Contrary to 'public' opinion, no one was forced against their will to join this adventure! Read this again, NO ONE!

My sense of direction is not quite as horrendous as some of my friends (you know who you are) and it didn't take me long to figure out the location of the house; somewhere beyond the yellow historical marker. Which means i would bloody need a machete!

The first landing site for Japanese troops during World War II?! Where's the beach then?! Right in front was more a jungle likely to create a dengue epidemic!

Another access was found after confirmation with operators of a nearby aquarium. The pathway wasn't as well protected as one would expect from state property; hence, we took our chance. :)

To be totally honest, this would be my second time on the quiet dirt path. I ventured this far the first time and stopped going forward because i was alone! Just imagine the danger of injuring myself, coming across a group of illegal immigrants or worse, stepping onto a bed of snakes!

Having a group of friends accompanying me was definitely much more comforting; i had a much more relaxed time to enjoy the wildlife so abundant in this rural gem of Singapore.

Wildlife, in such insecure circumstances, is defined as all living things that have no potential of harming us. Put it this way, except for mosquito repellent, the most powerful weapon we have then was probably only my huge-ass camera!

Oh my gosh! The same sentence ran through my brain twice when the alert Ms Thng stopped me in my track and pointed at the blackish reptile in the middle of the path!!! For those who are unaware, i have a great phobia of snakes. My greatest thanks to Ms Thng who has helped me avoid this calamity!

Destination in sight! Bad news though; the place appeared to be barricaded which means there would be CCTVs to deter intruders from moving further.

Side-track a bit - don't bother exploring if you are sensitive to smell. The whole area stank of decomposed materials in low tides!

Expected, CCTV in operation...

Attempts to find a separate point of entry were sadly unsuccessful. Appended above was the best shot i had of the vicinity with no sight of the main building that attracted us in the first place!

A heavy heart as we slowly trekked back to the car. :(

Additional Information
We thought of paying a boat operator from the Lim Chu Kang jetty to send us to the house (it was only two hundred meters away).

No go; the operators are mindful that the mysterious house is out of bounds and it doesn't help to have a police coast guard overseeing the jetty!

One Concept Wine & Dine @ Blair Road [Opposite Singapore General Hospital]

An old friend whom i met up today was sharing with me a new restaurant right behind his workplace that serves good fusion food. I thought of driving past the place just to check out the location but he insisted on treating me for a sampling session!

Mind you, this was after a heavy char siew, roast duck and roast meat meal at Kay Lee followed by a dessert session at Changi Village and a durian indulgence at Katong.

I was full.
I could hardly reject a free meal though.
^_^

Canadian Scallops
Despite my initial reservation that lightly grilled scallops would not differ much from the ones served in typical coffeeshop tze char stalls, i have to agree that the combination of juicy scallops, sourish orange pulps, salty fish roes and crunchy sweet bell peppers was simply as extraordinary as they looked!

Croquetes Mushroom
Sitting on a bed of green sprouts, these golden 'rocks' were a result of grinding the breadcrumbs into finer bits before deep frying them in a pot of boiling oil. Yawnz, hardly impressive.

That was until you tear them apart! You would never have guessed what the filling taste like (without me telling you of course); mushroom soup!

Honestly, the concept was similar to soup in a bread bowl, albeit in a smaller, crispier proportion. Personally, they would be godsends if the filling was in liquid form. Imagine the warm sensation of yummy mushroom soup flowing down the throat..

Basil Cheese Cake
I surely did not expect such a glamourous, flowery presentation for a cheesecake, no matter how uniquely flavoured it was said to be!

Anyone can remember a dessert that was presented in an almost identical way? The dirt cake from Vanilla Cafe, which was a great letdown in my honest opinion!

This one from One Concept was way better; topped with a generous serving of digestive and chocolate biscuit cumbs, what absolutely excited my taste buds was the salted layer of blissfully sweet biscuit base.

Now, i am not a big fan of basil and although i did enjoy the minty-peppery aftertaste of the cheesecake, i thought the flavour was a bit subdued when having it with the biscuit crumbs and base. It might have performed even better with a really cheesy normal new york cheesecake instead.

Bedok Corner Hokkien Prawn Mee [勿洛湾炒虾面] - Delicious As It Has Always Been @ Bedok Food Centre

Every hawker centre in Singapore has its own signature food stalls; bak chor mee at block 85,cheng tng at bedok corner, wanton mee at old airport road, nasi lemak at changi village, satay at clementi central etc etc.

For such a small scale hawker centre, Bedok food centre is blessed with quite a number of good stalls; one of which is the hokkien prawn mee stall. If you are unlucky, as i was in numerous occasions, it might mean a wait of at least thirty minutes before you are handed your order!

Compared to most stalls serving hokkien mee, there is one trait that stands out particularly from Bedok corner's version; the heavy usage of thinner bee hoon over normal yellow mee and thick bee hoon.

Does that even make a difference? Definitely! For one, it does make eating noodles a lot easier with bee hoon. And i have always had the impression that bee hoon is nutritionally the least "fattening" among all noodles!

Noodles aside, the prawn stock used to soak the noodles can only be described as richly flavoured and of 'gao-ness' guaranteed to whet your appetite! It was so delicious; i could actually neglect the lack of deep fried pork lard!

Crepes & Puffs - Your Classic Confection Desserts @ Changi Village [Singapore]

Five years ago, i would have to scratch my head a couple of times to think of an air-conditioned dessert cafe to chill out after a heavy delicious meal at Changi Village hawker centre.

Now, we have Crepes & Puffs smacked in the middle of the rustic neighbourhood well known as the gateway to the last natural haven in Singapore; Pulau Ubin!

Menu was not incredibly extensive with only about five different fillings for crepes and a handful of puffs and cakes. A pretty good move since most if not all visitors to the village are likely to pig out at the hawker centre or in the numerous coffee shops (kopitiams) nearby.

Banana Choc Crepe
Shaped like a popiah cut in half, i would forgive you for assuming that the dark filling is pure chocolate; it was actually chocolate sponge cake!

Not that i am complaining as the bite was far more satisfying as compared to one filled with thick chocolate fudge. Furthermore, you can never go wrong with the combi of cold yet fresh banana chunks and light, fluffy chocolate sponge cake! Personally, i can forgo the crepe skin entirely and eat this naked, literally.

Strawberry Shortcake
I cannot resist not ordering this! Gently flavoured with no shocking revelation; a simple plain old strawberry shortcake that does its job as a dessert. Period.

Ice Chocolate
This is one beverage i am returning for! Just the right sweetness, the right consistency and especially thirst quenching on a hot day!

Shall try their puffs next time!

Durian Lingers - Hopefully It's the Fruit, Not the Smell @ 155 Still Road [Joo Chiat]

$

Durian Lingers - it makes me wonder what the basis was for coming out with such a name when i am totally aware that durians are seasonal fruits and i doubt any sane person would want to have the smell of durians lingering in the car, house and office!

Whatever the case, it was supposed to be an indulgent trip to Sindy for its quality Mao Shan Wang (Cat Mountain King) but as luck had it, it was closed and we had to make do with an alternative; today's Durian Lingers.

Geylang, where there are quite a number of big operation durian stalls along the main street, was not even considered as i find the quality for the more expensive durian varieties to be very inconsistent each time i visit.

Two of us, two stuffed stomachs. Nonetheless, we were quite confident we would triumph over this gigantic baby of over 2.5 kilograms! Damn, i seriously hate food challenges like this!

Counting thirteen arils in total, my friend Jackie could now understand why MSW (Mao Shan Wang in short) is publicly acknowledged as one of the best durian varieties; sweet yet with a bitter aftertaste, fleshy and extremely creamy!

One major grudge was that the seeds were not as small as the epic MSWs in Sindy. Another comment had to do with the varied texture; arils on one half were drier than the other! Tsk tsk tsk!

However, Durian Lingers offers a much more comfortable and spacious spot where you can gorge yourself crazy with durians while mocking at those motorists stuck in a jam along Still Road.

Prefer the nice indoors? No problem; do note that it is not air-conditioned though!

Eating durians is a messy business and opening them can be a challenge! Hence, many people prefer to buy these readily packed durians and enjoy them in the comfort of their own house. Even though each pack was sealed with a thick layer of cling wrap, the smell would leak and i would strongly suggest you bring along a lock and lock container to pack them.

For the benefit of everyone!

Fried Hokkien Mee @ Kopitiam in Northpoint [Yishun]

My younger sister apparently has a thing for hokkien mee and this is something i found out only recently when i offered to "ta bao" (as in takeaway) the famous bedok hokkien prawn mee!

Her preference lies in the above fried prawn mee stall located in a shopping centre very near our apartment; the Kopitiam in Northpoint which would take us less than ten minutes to walk to.

I had the chance to try it out one weekday afternoon; At S$4.50 for the minimum serving, it was a huge portion even though i would be happier to see more beehoon or thick beehoon making up most of the carbohydrates.

Ingredients wise, the chef was definitely not stingy and i had the fortune of securing oily strips of pork belly in many, if not every, scoops! He was also very generous with the yummy eggs! However, the taste fell short of my expectation for an authentic plate of hokkien prawn mee; yes, it was flavourful yet that delicious savouriness came mainly from meat stock, not prawns!

Whatever the case, the lack of authenticity didn't stop me from cleaning up the plate. Burrrrp.....

Discovery Touch Pool @ S.E.A Aquarium [Resort World Sentosa], Singapore

I visited S.E.A Aquarium again last Friday and this time, i am adamant i must have my way with the discovery touch pool; that's exactly how childish i can be at times although i always attribute it to a youngish heart.

Expectedly, it was crowded with loads of tourists and i waited for approximately ten minutes before reaching my turn to abusefondle show my tender loving care for the absolutely loveable sea creatures.

I wonder sometimes on the necessity to install an interactive touch pool for visitors; yes, it definitely has an educational value to it and i am sure the staff members on duty are doing their best to relay the information. However, humans are able to inflict considerable injury unknowingly when they are enthusiastic.

Public signs could only do so much! I feel so sorry for those poor animals in the water which would have to suffer much more in the hands of the homo sapiens, including mine. Hail the hypocrisy.

Enough of this animal activist's talk! The tiny pool contained only a limited number of sea creatures; unsurprising news given the space constraint.

Besides the giant knobbly sea stars, which weren't as gigantic as they should be, i was most taken in by the spongy pillow starfish.

Anyone can tell me what these are? Shark eggs! Readers who have read my post on the Underwater World in Sentosa might remember this piece of information. Next question, can anyone guess what species they belong to?

Answer: bamboo sharks! By the way, bet you would notice the rock like creature next to the pup; not sure if i remember correctly but i thought it was called handshy crab, for obvious reasons.

No, i didn't dare touch it (not the ray too).

Din Tai Fung [鼎泰豐] @ Resort World Sentosa [Singapore]

It wasn't until i downloaded the pictures from my camera that i realised that something was amiss with the Din Tai Fung outlet at Resort World Sentosa; has anyone actually noticed the smaller word 'baits' beside "din tai fung"?

I did an online search and the mystery is solved; baits was a concept that allowed diners to order across participating restaurants for a bigger variety of food selection. Sadly for the consumers, it failed to take off.

Whatever the case, it didn't bother me since my family was already very focused in their decision (a rare occasion) to patronise 'Din Tai Fung' that day for their badly missed signature xiaolongbao(s).

Oriental Salad
小菜
As always, we began the xiaolongbao meal with this traditional appetiser from Northern China that did a great job in exciting our senses and yet was only lightly flavoured with a special type of vinegar dressing.

Fried Rice with Eggs
蛋炒饭
Mom claimed she can whip a better plate of fried rice; a boastful remark i beg to differ! Having eaten mom's version countless times, i can confirm there hasn't been a single time when every single grain of her fried rice is deliciously and luxuriously coated with eggs, as in the case in Din Tai Fung!

Special Marinated Pork Chop
炸排骨
In the past, this would be highly sought after. However, recent entrants to Singapore food industry include many reputable ones hailing from Taiwan (where Din Tai Fung originates); bringing with them deep fried items using similar marination.

Despite using a tougher meat we know as pork, it was still a notch higher for its lighter batter and a cut that remained juicy without being overly oil-soaked.

Steamed Chilli Crab & Pork Buns
螃蟹鲜肉包
That mouth watering thought of hot chilli crabs and warm mantou compelled me to order this. Not sure if pork would be a perfect companion but i am so willing to try this out.

One word: okay. Nothing fanciful about them and i thought it would be best to leave chilli crabs and pork separately when it comes to buns. They just didn't taste exceptional when mixed together.

Steamed Yam Dumplings
芋泥小笼包
When it comes to dessert dumplings, my favourite has to be those with red bean fillings. Point is, my dad was with us that day and i am absolutely certain popping a red bean xiaolongbao in his mouth would trigger off his nagging mode. Hence, i went with the chef recommended yam based xiaolongbao!

I was expecting something along the line of sinful Teochew yam paste, which is still considered a lesser evil compared to the sweeter red bean. Frankly, the yam flavour was too subtle for my taste buds and i thought i might have enjoyed the thin-skinned dumplings better if they were oilier.

Steamed Pork Dumplings
小笼包
Now the stars with their 18 intricate folds!

Once again, i felt short-changed; milder seasoning (even for the meat broth), less oily and an overall reduction in satisfaction! The taste seemed to deviate a lot since the last time i had Din Tai Fung xiaolongbao. Either the former or that my taste buds had been bought over by the damn fantastic ones at Dragon-i at Kuala Lumpur.

Instagram - Jumping on the bandwagon!

For the longest time, i have been resisting the clamouring from others to join alternative social media platforms other than the grandmaster of all; Facebook.

The lack of time is always cited as the main reason and i am super uncomfortable about real-time updates, which can be peppered with emotions, moods that are not thoroughly thought through (this explains why i am not excited over Twitter).

Instagram, however, is different! A picture can say a thousand words and everyone is free to interpret it the way they want to, for better or for worse. I am not banking on having more food pictures (check out this blog if that's what you want); likely, you would see more snippets of my personal life via Instagram.

Another visit to S.E.A Aquarium - Includes an Unsatisfactory View of the Dolphin Island @ Resort World Sentosa [Singapore]

$

It has only been four months and i am back once again to S.E.A aquarium! This time round, it's a family excursion including the female brat; Jovyn (brought her along simply because her entry is free).

Oh! Before i forget, please note that this post would not talk much about the attractions (except for Dolphin Island) as much details have already been covered four months ago in this blog. For S.E.A aquarium, kindly click here. For Maritime Experiential Museum, click here

Bringing a toddler has its benefits. The adults have the appropriate excuse to monkey around like a kid as such childish antics would most likely be overlooked by the general public!

And it's Jovyn we are talking about; she seldom has any problem melting the heart of strangers, so long she doesn't throw her loud, screaming tantrums.

In order not to disturb other visitors in the Typhoon theatre, which would have resulted in her screaming throughout the twenty-minute show, i had to sacrifice myself by luring Jovyn away from her grandparents and my sister so that they can enjoy the extraordinary experience.

Dad loving the shipwreck aquarium upon exiting the typhoon theatre!

Both my parents actually thought the shipwreck was real and i had to explain that it's not the case. In a REAL ocean, a shipwreck would typically take ten years to evolve into a thriving marine habitat.

Jovyn was intrigued with the underwater world, as most kids are.

Entering the S.E.A aquarium proper - for those who are still confused at the moment, entry to the Maritime Experiential Museum is included in the ticket price for S.E.A Aquarium.

A clean-up was conducted on that day/time we were there. I am not very sure what that blue tube is although it did seem like a suction tube that operates in the way a vacuum cleaner does.

The parents weren't too interested in the cleaning exercise; they were in fact discussing among themselves which fish in the aquarium can be eaten. =_=!!!

Oops! I have to turn off the flash on my camera?!? Even though it can be an inconvenience, i am glad to know that signs have been put in place to remind photographers to turn off the flash. However, the notice was placed on some tanks and missing on others; so, is the rule across the board or not?

A snapshot of Jovyn; no, i have no idea why she had such a shocked expression!

Doubt she was captivated by the beauty of the tank; it may be a fish that bears some facial resemblance to a person she knows.

Cuttlefish! Man, i love dried cuttlefish; how can they be so delicious?! Oh dear, i am behaving just like my parents! Anyway, i always have a great craving for seafood after a visit to an aquarium.

Want to guess why there were so many people crowding the two viewing panels in the photograph?

Dolphin island exhibit with the highly controversial purchase of indo-pacific bottlenose dolphins!

Many visitors were scrambling to catch the sight of those adorable dolphins but there were no such luck as the tanks housing the twenty four dolphins were said to be expansive.

Honestly, the view was quite disappointing despite the hype of them as a major exhibit. Nonetheless, it is already cruel to imprison wild dolphins for the purpose of this aquarium and to deny them the space would be inhumane!

At this point, Jovyn was no longer running around. It was already past her nap time and in addition, there was something growling in her body.

The hunger monster!

I would love to have this octopus for dinner! It would be good to have it as fresh sashimi but i would be as agreeable to have it grilled, deep fried or steamed. Given the size, it is possible to have it cooked using all the aforementioned methods in one go.

Enchanting jellyfishes that never fail to take my breath away.

After her full bottle of milk, energy level was up for Jovyn. I didn't have to do much chasing as there were two capable ladies around; my mom and my sister!

To serve as a reminder, S.E.A aquarium currently holds two titles of the world's largest - aquarium and the viewing panel in the above picture.

I absolutely love these grumpy looking fishes! They hardly moved and all of them weirdly faced the same direction; i can draw the reference to a highly disciplined army of soldiers!

Another employee cleaning the tank. I should quickly take my PADI certificate and maybe work part time in S.E.A aquarium for that extra cash!

Last exhibit - the Shark Seas.

Sadly, there is no Great White. I would love to take more pictures here but Jovyn was getting cranky; apparently, a full bottle of milk was insufficient!

Ending the post abruptly with the Shark Seas viewing panel right outside the aquarium!

I surprise myself sometimes.

Even after facing so many rounds of bitter disappointment, i simply could not resist ordering a serving of black carrot cake when i caught sight of a longer than usual queue in front of this stall located at Toa Payoh Lorong 8 hawker centre.

Visual wise, it did manage to whet my appetite with a generous spread of eggs over diced up chai tow kway that had undergone a nice douse of dark sweet sauce!

I would have preferred a more dicey cut and i would have much enjoyed a sweeter rendition. Having said that, this version, with its stickier texture and a stronger wok hei, was the best out of the mediocre lot i had in recent month.

Ghost Festival (7th Lunar Month) Ritual - The Possession by Dua Yah Peh (大爷伯) @ Choa Chu Kang Cemetery [Singapore]

$

The story goes like this.

I wanted to check out Singapore's largest cemetery in Lim Chu Kang during the ghost month as i am aware that despite the taboos associated with such visitations in this super-yin period; there are many Taoist temples that would specially organise trips to the cemeteries at night to perform rituals aimed at relieving the souls' suffering.

Problem was: the entire cemetery was devoid of any human activity and routes beyond ten meters away from the main Lim Chu Kang road were pitch black!

I was about to make a U-turn back to the expressway when i chanced upon a convoy of at least six parked motor vehicles with twenty over persons!

All of them belong to this religious group known as 忠雲壇 (directly translated as Loyal Cloud Altar) and their purpose that night was to perform a ritual involving possession by this notable ghost guard by the title of Dua Yah Peh.

My request to join them as an outsider was warmly welcomed!
I was truthfully overjoyed!

Now, whenever Dua Yah Peh is mentioned, chances are you also hear the following three words; Di Yah Peh (二爷伯). There is in fact quite an interesting story about the two ghost guards known collectively as Dua Di Yah Peh (大二爷伯) or 黑白无常 and i would share with you later in this post.

Before entering the realm of the dead, it is recommended to light some incense sticks and say a few words of prayers (whatever religions or denominations you may belong to).

After that, it was a drive into the Chinese cemetery; i had absolutely no idea where we were being led to! By this time, there were over ten cars in the convoy.

Final Destination: Path 17.

The staff and devotees started setting up the altar for the ritual upon arrival. As i have no idea on how to help out, i did what i have always enjoyed.

Take pictures of the surroundings. Honestly, anything with flash at night just look horrible! I must seriously consider investing in a quality tripod and maybe a horseshoe flash. If i win the lottery that is.

Saturday happened to be the 4th day of the 7th lunar month so the moon was still a bit shy. The entire graveyard would look marvelous on a full moon day but the 15th day of the ghost month happens to fall on a working day; Wednesday!

Weirdly, the atmosphere was not as eerie as many expect it to be. Instead, both Alex and I felt extremely relaxed in the environment.

Figurines (Statues) of famous hell deities (including Dua Di Yah Peh, the ox-faced and horse-faced guards etc) filled up one table that served as the altar.

Facing the table was another setup to invoke the possession by Dua Yah Peh. Note the items on the table; cans of Guinness Stout, biscuits, pastries, a set of abacus, stacks of hell money.

Above is the medium who served as the temporary human skin for the hell deity. The possession process can be rather bizarre for some and words cannot really describe it. What i can probably add is that the medium would start to retch loudly!

I am going to share the story of Dua Di Yah Peh now. They were originally constables during the Qing dynasty who were heavily addicted to the evil of that era; opium. Dua Yah Peh, being the head constable, was given the choice to accept bribes in order to continue his addiction but chose not to do so as he knew it would harm more of his countrymen. His eventual choice was  hang himself.

Di Yah Peh was devastated by the demise of his sworn brother and ended his life the next day. In view of their noble character, the Jade Emperor decided to appoint them as hell guards with the following responsibilities; carry out law and order in hell, catch wandering spirits still lingering on earth and to provide ritual services to help human.

My source for the story came from here. It contains more details (like why Dua Yah Peh is always shown to have a long tongue), so do give it a click to read more.

Candles and incense sticks were placed in front of tombs and along the pathway in that area. With tens of thousands of graves, it would be impossible to cover the entire cemetery in one night!

Devotees were also busy building up two paper money wells that would go up in flames at the end of the ritual. Thankfully, the worst of the haze has already passed.

I counted at least three different convoys bypassing us; guess they were on their way to other paths to perform similar rituals.

A random picture - notice the red dot towards the right? That's the burning of paper money by another group. Yes, i noticed an orb on the left even though i am no longer convinced they are spirits or souls.

To be totally frank, the scene right in front of me then was spectacular with a touch of mysticism; a sight that was drastically different from the daytime.

The lit candles helped greatly in creating the effect. A better camera and a more professional photographer would however capture a view that takes your breath away.

One of my many failed attempts to take a photograph of Alex with tombstones in the background.

We were totally at ease! We were more frightened by the high likelihood of hearing the "crunch" sound; there were so many snails crawling on the cemetery grounds!

Dua Yah Peh making his rounds. He would sit on tombstones without any reservation and answer questions posed by his devotees. Guess what is the most common question?

4D numbers lah! Actually, i would have asked for TOTO numbers since the payout of 4D was such a pittance compared to the million-dollar TOTO prize!

Yet another random picture! Don't think too much, there is absolutely no shocking paranormal element!

What shocked me more was the sight of a bus (circled in the picture) charging along the pathway! It reminded me so much of a True Singapore Ghost Story that spoke of a bus that ferried the dead. Alex managed to speak to the bus driver; the poor man had lost his way! haha

This appeared almost like souls leaving the bodies; a camera trick easily performed by adjusting the shutter speed. So never trust photographs 100%; always trust your own eyes. That happened to me a few years ago, remember?

Many friends who knew i participated in this 'adventure' often questioned if the possession is real.

Truth is, i don't know. I am a skeptical person by nature and it would be hard to convince me although i have to emphasise we should always respect and never put down other religions despite the reservations we might have.

What i saw was a person, supposedly possessed by a deity, who was able to drink bottle after bottle of hard liquor, can after can of Guinness Stout and puff stick after stuck of cigarette; sometimes two or more at one go. Again, i do believe such 'skills' can be trained over time.

At this point, we had stayed in the cemetery for over two hours. I would have participated till the very end but Alex insisted on going back to settle his property matters!

Sad :(

Lastly, A BIG BIG THANK YOU to staff of 忠雲壇 and special thanks to above auntie who brought along a damn powerful LED torch that provided the necessary illumination for most of the pictures!

Want to experience the same as i did? The Ghost Month in 2013 is until 04 September, so you might want to consider checking out the cemeteries at night during this period. Good luck. :)

Peach Garden A-la-Carte Dinner Buffet [桃苑任点任吃自助晚餐] @ Miramar Hotel

Buffet again?!!??! I know, i know, i know; my continuous complaints of getting a bit too 'weighty' in recent years seem to have no effect whatsoever on my eating habits.

I do have a valid excuse this time.

A birthday boy was given the powerful role as the ultimate decision maker and his food wish was to visit the famous Peach Garden for its Chinese dinner buffet! So, i didn't have a choice okay!

To make it easier for everyone, i am grouping my review according to the menu (i shall show it towards the end of this post) even though i have to mention beforehand that we managed only 19 out of 40 items.

Shark's Fin / Soup

Limited to only one order per person, i went with the braised baby superior shark's fin soup with fresh crab meat and crab roe (darn, that was a mouthful of words). Not amazing in my opinion; i could have had a nicer tasting one from pasar malam. Furthermore, it seemed to be a bit too orangey looking!

Appetizers

Chilled Fresh Scallop with Fruit and Plum Sauce
Scallops that were cold to the touch would not have appealed to me if not for the tiny bits of chilli padi that gave them a spicy twist that i quite enjoyed.

Chilled Drunken Chicken
Too cold, too tough although Vanessa liked it enough to have a second serving all for herself.

Seafood

Deep Fried Soon Hock Fish
Mom would have attacked this dish ferociously! On second thoughts, she might have preferred the fish steamed. Anyway, it was served freshly fried and the benefits were of course the extremely crispy exterior coupled with a meaty interior that were perfect in that concoction of flavourful garlic and superior soya sauce.

Sauteed Live Prawns in Marmite Sauce
The taste of marmite sweetness that was apparent even after i de-shelled the prawns was the key factor for loving them! I realised recently i am not the only weirdo who would remove the sinful heads and eat the rest of the prawns, including their calcium-rich shells. Yes, i am referring to you Elizabeth!

Live Prawns in Indonesian Style
Prawns were the same type of prawns; i admitted the curry was flavourful but my vote would still lie with the marmite prawns.

Deep Fried Prawns with Wasabi Salad Cream
With so much prawns cooked in different styles, this was seriously an overdose! The prawns were over laden with tear-inducing wasabi (which might be a good thing for some of you) and could have been more manageable for weaklings like me by the addition of more mayonnaise.

Steamed Fillet of Pa Ting Fish
Swimming in a pool of sauce similar to the Soon Hock, this would win my mom's heart for its healthier rendition teamed with simple freshness.

Meat

Sauteed Venison in Cantonese Style
Honestly, i liked the sauce more than the deer meat which i have always thought to be too tough for my liking.

Baked Spare Ribs with Coffee Sauce
Something's wrong with me. Or, something's wrong with other members of the Gang of Four. Lightly coated with coffee sauce, these bite-sized ribs were great i thought! Okay, i agreed they could have performed better with a stronger dose of coffee essence and in bigger, satisfying pieces.

Sauteed Kurobuta Pork Cubes
Didn't like; they were too mildly seasoned!

Sauteed Chicken with Satay Sauce
Hm... should be deep fried instead of sauteed. Despite the tenderness of the chicken meat, this was a disappointment. They were tasteless and the satay sauce lacked the basic peanut-curry flavouring that could have bloody rescued the dish.

Barbecued Char Siew
Sauce was palatable and that's the only positive comment i have. Negative feedback; the lack of fats has resulted in a hardness that i personally detest.

Poached Emperor Chicken
Like the chilled drunken chicken, this was served cold!!! :( That saucer of minced garlic improved the taste marginally even though still insufficient to entice me to take the third piece!

Seasonal Vegetable / Beancurd

The men's love for meat in buffet means that vegetables would generally be overlooked. We ordered only one out of four available items; poached local spinach with century egg and salted egg! This was one of the rare occasions i actually liked the combination! p.s. picture showed only a portion i brought to my plate.

Desserts

Chilled Jelly Royale with Julienne of Coconut
The strong taste of coconut was evident as the liquid trickled down my throat and the jelly was the softer type with a flavouring that was thankfully not overpowering.

Chilled Fresh Mango Sago with Pomelo
This was so common that my sole criterion was the level of sweetness. More often than not, sour mangoes would wrinkle my expression. This was fortunately not the case here although it was not exceptional either.

Chilled Black Glutinous Rice with Ice Cream
Reserving my comment on this since i have never been a fan. To be fair, Kon loved it and i think he downed at least two bowls!

Chilled Osmanthus Jello
What's most important for this dessert is the fragrance that hit you as your teeth sink into the jelly! This didn't disappoint and was as good and as visually pleasing as it should be.

======

Overall, i have a mixed opinion of Peach Garden's dinner buffet. Maybe i am too biased for cheaper, apparently healthier fare offered by quality steamboat buffet restaurants like Suki-ya.

Oh, must remember to add that service was really one of the better ones i have in Singapore so far.

Roasted Pork & Char Siew Rice (湘记烧肉叉烧饭) @ CCK 302 Food House - Xiang Ji [Near Choa Chu Kang MRT Station]

During my national service days as a lobo dental orderly in Tengah Air Base, i often stopped by this coffeeshop right behind Choa Chu Kang bus interchange for a plate of expensive yet damn nice oyster omelette.

It has been a long hiatus since i last visited; so you can imagine my disappointment when i found that the stall is no longer serving oyster omelette! :( For a few minutes, i was deliberating whether i should just settle my dinner at the air-conditioned Lot 1 shopping centre instead.

Although i wasn't exactly craving for roasted delights, my curiousity was piqued when i saw the queue right in front of the above stall. An online search revealed two must-trys; roasted pork and char siew!

Rarely have i enjoyed char siew without excessivey charred and fatty bits. This would be that rare occasion; the char siew was skillfully roasted, resulting in a surprising moist tenderness that had also locked in the roasted flavour! Not the best i have (Kay Lee remains the champ) but still manage a very impressive second position.

On roasted pork, i have to declare beforehand that i am not a big fan and this might require further confirmation from seasoned roasted pork lovers like my secondary school friend, Jacky Zhihao. Personally, i found the roasted pork to be a bit too salty even though i simply could not resist the cackling of crispy pork skin!

Sinful yet so delicious and satisfying!

Bukit Timah Nature Reserve - Climbing Up the Hill with Mom and Dad [Singapore]

$

As a true blue Singaporean who has lived in the small city state her entire life (save for a few long haul overseas vacations), my mom has never actually stepped into the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve.

Hence, i took advantage of the long weekend last week to bring both parents for an early morning trek! As with most posts labelled under "Singapore Attractions", be prepared for an avalanche of pictures!

^_^

The first sight of activity came from the native residents of the nature reserve; the long tailed macaques. Most of you might have heard of the many complaints by nearby residents of rogue, aggressive monkeys although i wish to add that humans are the intruders, not the macaques and residents should be fully aware of the fact that they would be living next to the nature reserve when they purchased the property.

In the first place, the government should not have even allowed the building of houses in an area so close to the nature reserve's entrance! *exasperated* Having said that, many visitors have exacerbated by the problem by feeding the monkeys. So, please DO NOT FEED them! If my advice doesn't affect you, do note that there's a hefty fine for feeding the monkeys.

Start of our trek after walking past the beautiful landed bungalows i know i would never get a chance to buy. Realistically, i would prefer a condominium apartment over a landed property anytime; scared of snakes lah.

Plaque explaining that Bukit Timah was a battle site in World War 2. Anyone can still remember the first entry point by the Japanese? I recently blogged about it!

Question: why is there a roadsign for "no horn"? I initially thought it was for the service vehicles of National Parks which oversees the reserve but the answer has a more historical touch; the sign was used before the 70s when private cars were still allowed on this very road that leads to the summit!

In view of the health and safety of native plants and animals, dogs are barred from entering the nature reserves. You may click the above picture to understand the reasons behind the ruling.

History time! "Bukit Timah Nature Reserve is the first forest reserve in Singapore established for nature conservation in 1883. It was also officially declared as Singapore’s second ASEAN Heritage Park on 18 October 2011" - taken from National Parks website.

Now, i am an animal rather than a plant lover. So, despite knowing there are over 840 species of plants in the nature reserve, i couldn't tell one tree from the other. Many a time, the only exclamation we could give was "wah... so tall"!!!

Three alternative trails are available for those who would like to take in more sights, sound and smell. I have yet to explore them as i am just too lazy!!!

Along the main trail we took, there were a total of three sheltered huts with the first one known as Kuring Hut. We didn't stop to rest as the adrenaline to reach the summit as soon as possible was still very much active.

Basking in the morning sun!

Spiders working hard to maintain their webs for trapping unknowing preys! Darn, i think my lens need some expensive maintenance too; notice those orb-like stuff on the photograph?

Gigantic cut trunks lining the route.

Granite (pronounced as gra-neet and not gra-nite) is in abundance in the area and like Pulau Ubin, there were quite a number of operating quarries surrounding Bukit Timah.

Towering tree again - "wah... so tall"!

Now that Halloween is coming, my mind has come up with a devious plan; shall masquerade as a Chinese vampire and sit on the above bench at around 8pm. Bet i can solicit a lot of unwanted screams!

Mom and dad checking out the shrubs and trees. Once again, the topics were on whether those plants have been seen before in their kampong days and their edibility.

A Y-junction on the main route - since it was only 200 meters along the quarry road, we figured it might just be worth the effort to catch the beautiful view of Hinhede Quarry.

Another question - what was the purpose for using a coiled wire? Guess most of you would have gotten the answer; the tree is not dead and will continue to grow its girth! Having a normal wire will eventually result in breakage.

Note - at the end of quarry road is the cliff edge! Beware and hold on tight to your hyperactive kids! I sent an email to National Parks about the red-white barrier tape on the sign since it compromised the message without serving any useful purpose.

The partially-blocked helicopter view of Hinhede Quarry.

I was going to suggest that those trees be chopped to take advantage of the scenery but i have to hold my tongue; this is a nature reserve for goodness sake!

That threatening red signboard of a soldier shooting an unarmed person is unnerving for an adventurous individual! I am speaking for myself of course.

It houses two communication towers (collectively known as TAS VHF station) that many can see from afar on main roads around Bukit Timah (Bukit means hill by the way).

The parents' photo; i am in the picture too! That monkey in the "do not feed the monkeys" sign refers to me as i was borne in the year of the mischievous monkey!

Back to the Y-junction where we come to our second sheltered hut; Simpang Hut.

'To Summit' path is a shorter route but i know my mom far too well; she does not take too kindly to steps. A challenge to her face might just do the trick though!

This tree was the tallest one i saw in Bukit Timah; the way the branches stretched out gave it a very majestic aura. I wonder if i can see it from upper bukit timah road.

Reaching the summit after almost an hour climb!

Hut on the summit known simply as "Summit Hut"! At 163.63 meters tall, this spot is Singapore's highest natural point (not really a big deal since the tallest building in Singapore is 280 meters tall).

Besides the hut are two smaller communication towers and an abandoned building.

If you ask me, i am assuming that the warning sign was taken off and i am free to enter the vicinity should it be unlocked. Look closer and you would also notice that there was no lock to the blue door.

Summit Hut would be the popular rest stop for everyone so you might not be able to secure an available seat. Feel free to use the grass! At the very least, you can be assured that there would be no dog poo.

C'mon, if you really love Singapore, you would not commit vandalism!

Yet again a couple picture before we made our way down the hill.

Love this photograph - sunlight streaming through the forest canopy bathing the three men although they appeared a bit blurry. Hope that Nikon D7100 would be sold at a much cheaper price in the upcoming COMEX 2013.

Terrain on the main trail is quite comfortable for any able person with the exception of one section where the gradient is very steep! See that guy in red; he's the famous Chef Eric!

There's a way to combat the danger of falling while walking down the steep slope; walk backwards! Do note that you don't really have eyes behind your head so please keep in mind other trekkers who are hiking up Bukit Timah.

As with any nature spot, please leave nothing but your footprints.

Parking
It's a pain in the ass! The car park was full on the two weekends i was there!

You may try to reach the reserve earlier and also consider parking by the roadside along Bukit Drive (towards The Raintree condominium). Be considerate; park but don't BLOCK the road!

Fishball Noodles - My Current Favourite @ Broadway Food Centre [Yishun Block 414]

As a person who loves to eat and share his personal food experiences with family, friends and readers of this blog, it's actually quite common to hear of comments that don't agree with my review.

Often, i attribute them to individual taste and preference although i have had my fair share of disappointment when i paid the food establishment another visit. At times, it is a matter of quality that deteriorate‎s over the years.

Why am i saying so much? Because i am no longer satisfied with my bowl of fishball noodles from Xiang Xiang in Chong Pang! And that is a major blow given i had been loyal for over twenty years!

Thankfully, a substitute is readily available and it's merely a five-minute drive from my house! Location: Block 414, Yishun Ring Road, Broadway Food Centre!

From the outlook, it looks just like your normal bowl of fisball noodles saved for the generous sprinklers of minced pork right on top! I first tried it half a year ago (thanks to my dad who insisted on having fishball noodles) and so far, the standard has been consistent.

Their fishballs were not as great as Xiang Xiang in their heydays but had a solid QQ bite that far surpassed many stalls selling the same dish. What i am more impressed with were the noodles.

Okay, i lied.

It was more the combination of everything (except for that pathetic piece of lettuce) that surprised me; from the al dente noodles to the fatty minced pork and even the sauces! A perfect amalgam of sweetness, sourness, spiciness and savouriness!

Flying Fish Sashimi @ Itacho Sushi [JCube]

$

My brain was scrambling to confirm what to have in Itacho Sushi last week when the waitress magically swiped out another menu from god-knows-where and offered some special items.

Nothing really caught our interest until we came to flying fish sashimi! My adventurous persona immediately surfaced and before the others said anything, i blurted "let's try this"!

I have never seen a real flying fish in my whole life and it's ironic that for our first meet up, it's literally flying into my stomach! Honestly, I have to admit i felt a slight pang of guilt when it was served; the poor fish was literally deboned!

The sad part was that i didn't even enjoy eating it (its sacrifice was in vain...); maybe we didn't articulate to the waitress properly that we prefer the simple and slice sashimi. What was served tasted suspiciously similar to the raw fish salad sold in many porridge stalls in Singapore, mixed in with too much spring onions!

Key difference with the raw fish salad was of course the huge differential in price! And i might have felt better without the dead fish staring at me while i am slowly chewing its meat.

Sigh, I should have just shut my mouth and stick to our usual sushi.
