Seoul Chicken Korean Restaurant @ 435 Sembawang Road (Near Chong Pang, Yishun) [Singapore]

Sembawang Road is blessed with clusters of 2-storey shophouses that stand apart from the numerous contained shopping centres we have in Singapore and with growing interest in having their business in a unique brick and mortar environment, food operators have been making inroads to such shophouses, despite the inconvenience and short supply of parking for motor vehicles.

A new entrant that took over the space from a Chinese restaurant would be Seoul Chicken Korean Restaurant - those familiar with the popular Chong Pang Nasi Lemak shop would not have missed Seoul Chicken as they resided at literally each end of the row of shophouses.

Interior design was simple, non-fanciful yet gave me the impression of dining in a typical restaurant at Korea that served the mass population.

It's actually a full fledged Korean restaurant and having the word "chicken" on its signboard gave people the wrong assumption that it's going to be another "fried chicken" joint in the market. I patronised thinking it's fried chicken and it's fried chicken i must have!

Side Dishes
A mainstay for most decent Korean restaurants - there were six placed on our table; from the usual kimchi, radishes, beansprouts, cucumbers, beancurd and omelette.

I had the most hope for the omelette which turned out to be relatively normal. Put it this way, i am now quite a master of fried omelette after i moved out of my parents' place.

My personal favourites would be the sourish, crunchy kimchi, the cool, crisp cucumber and the inari-like fried beancurd.

Seafood Pancake
In spite of the high pricing, i simply couldn't resist ordering Korean pancakes. As i am with Alex, spicy kimchi pancake was a no-go and had to settle with the seafood version. Nevertheless, i heard from friends that kimchi pancake is utterly easy to make!

Now coming back to the seafood pancake at Seoul Chicken, the batter was thin, lightly seasoned and fried to a crisp. I was most impressed with the seafood (prawns, squids etc) as the chef was generous with them (rightfully so for the price i am paying) and they tasted fresh!

The lightly seasoned batter i mentioned earlier had resulted in a rather bland outcome; the waitress had reminded me to dip the pancake into the sauce in the middle and boy was she right! There was a tingling spicy aftertaste but it did its job by enhancing the palatability of the pancake.

Fried Chicken with Sweet Soy Sauce
With five pieces of korean style crispy fried chicken that are not our usually smaller winglets / drumlets, i can roughly tell at one look that the batter on the skin would be too thick for my liking.

The truth was as predicted although the appetising sweet soy sauce marination wasn't just reserved for the batter; it can be felt even as i tore through the juicy chicken meat!

Dessert
Like the side dishes, dessert would be provided even though it was less practiced by Korean restaurants. In our case, it was a small bowl of fruit cocktail served in a milky liquid that suspiciously like Calpis!

=====

I wasn't blown away by the fried chicken and i guess the operator did sense it as she insisted that i should try the BBQ in the future. Now, i love Korean BBQ and to me, that's a dare. Should it fail to impress me, i would definitely pen down my truthful review in this blog.

Paris Van Java - Just Like Bugis Junction IMHO @ Bandung [Indonesia]

$

Paris Van Java is known as the biggest shopping centre in Bandung and don't ask me what we were doing there since we had plenty of shopping malls back in Singapore.

A panorama i took showed the scale of Paris Van Java; it didn't have many levels and from the differing facades, i was under the impression it was made up of individual, standalone stores!

Since i didn't do much research about the place, i suggested going to the top floor and then walk down. Turned out the top floor was more like a kid zone with a children's playground which would be good news if we were travelling with our Jerald and Jovyn but we weren't.

Colourful spinning pinwheels - i always wanted to buy this for my house although i don't have a garden and i might just leave it to the dust as time goes by.

Can you guess where my mum and sisters spend the next hour? At Sogo! As i am not keen at all to waste my precious time at department stores that are commonly found in Singapore, i arranged to meet up with them later at a specified time.

Lined with shops of brands not uncommon to Singaporeans, the first thought that came to mind was "this felt just like in Bugis Junction" even though the air conditioning for the latter was much cooler and concept was "European" rather than "Asian"!

I didn't feel a big urge to shop though since i always prefer to buy branded products at home. Furthermore, the discount wasn't enticing enough. Hence, it's more like window shopping for me while waiting for the ladies.

Just like bugis junction, smaller stores marketed their wares through the kiosks along the walkway; i noted flower pattern plates that were popular when i was a kid and fridge magnets, just to name a few.

As i entered from one end of Paris Van Java, walking to the other end made total sense and it's time for me to venture indoors where the air conditioning would be stronger.

Comic figurines for sale.

Kids playing with hot wheels using a purposely built circuit. Even though the toy had a history stretching from 1968, i remember them from the late 80s when numerous catchy advertisements were shown on television.

It's always about the 360 degree turn!

A lot of people were crowding the Hot Wheels circuit around lunchtime; i presume there was some kind of competition with a good mix of adults and kids.

The inner section was like a dead town and it sure didn't sound too good on a Sunday when business should be roaring!

There's a Daiso too! Pricing was almost similar to Singapore and since the price difference wasn't great and it's not worth my time to trawl through a million items, i gave it a miss.

An A&W outlet - do you know that A&W is very much a memorable childhood memory for me and even more than MacDonald's! I remember the coney dog, their waffles, the curly fries and of course the marvelicious root beer float!

I had to get one mug!

Ventured to Carrefour - the first hypermarket in Singapore that had since bumped out! Nowadays, i would purposely visit overseas supermarkets just so that i can check out the pricing of their baking materials / ingredients; the Koepoe Koepoe Pandan paste was priced at 10,000 rupiah!

Noted that Indonesians use Blue Band margarine whereas the choice for Malaysians / Singaporeans is Planta; strangely, both fall under the same mother company; Unilever.

Ending our visit to Paris Van Java with lunch at Pepper Lunch! Yes, why pepper lunch and no some unique restaurant that i couldn't find in Singapore?! Why why why?  I don't know as i recollect going along with the flow and didn't reject when my sister suggested the place.

Receipt for your reference - not exactly cheap.

Bao Today (包今天) @ Marina Square [Singapore]

A cheeky take on Justice Bao (the famous legendary judge in the Song Dynasty), this dim sum eatery had been at Marina Square for a long time and although attracting my attention every time i walked past, it wasn't until last weekend that i finally got myself seated in its premises!

It didn't take me long to tick off what i wanted from the order list; the typical dim sum dishes that everyone would have on their table. Most importantly, i needed a drink and my parched throat finally got soothed by the sweet yet richly infused honey chrysanthemum tea.

Alex opted for Chinese tea and got a shock when this bowl of hot tea was placed in front of him. His immediate retort was an exaggerated "how to drink like that?!" as he had expected either a pot of hot Chinese or refillable Chinese tea in a tea cup.

Har Gow (Prawn Dumpling) - no complaint even though i must admit i am seldom incredibly impressed with har gow and would be easily satisfied so long they don't come with a thick layer of skin and the prawns tasted fresh.

Siew Mai - Another of those basket dim sum that one would typical order; these were not too bad and i could actually have second helping if not for consideration for the plate of chee cheong fun that had yet to arrive on my table.

Chee Cheong Fun (Prawns) - Alex is actually quite easy to take care of since he usually goes for the same thing and for dim sum, you can just throw him order a few plates of chee cheong fun and he will be happy. Hence, he asked for two plates of chee cheong fun as he didn't want to share!

Two issues with the chee cheong fun; the sauce wasn't flavourful enough and my taste buds would be better off smearing the chee cheong fun with chilli sauce; secondly, the prawns in the middle of the folds had a weird, flattened shape with a dense, dry texture.

Golden Sand Bao - despite its vivid green coloring (reminding me of the pandan chiffon cakes that i have been baking recently), these buns had a light subtle pandan fragrance that didn't have that artificial aftertaste my pandan chiffon cake had, which is a good thing.

And of course i couldn't resist biting off just a small chunk of the green bun to expose the rich, thick and creamy salted egg sauce! Yummy indeed!

Red Bean and Banana Pastry - these were addictive and mind you, they were scalding hot; do handle them carefully as i burned the corner of my mouth in my excitement! I so love the combination of red bean paste and mashed banana and enjoy them better when a generous amount of them are encapsulated in thin, deep fried pastry; as in this case!

=====

Overall, some hits and misses and i definitely wouldn't mind dropping by again or their golden sand bao and the red bean and banana pastry!

Hakka Thunder Tea Rice (客家擂茶) in Gourmet Paradise Food Court @ Toa Payoh HDB Hub [Singapore]

$

The angry sounding thunder tea rice is a traditional dish for the Hakka dialect group and please be assured that just like the booming thunder in the sky; you don't have to worry for your life so long you don't see the lightning.

In actual fact, it was said to be filled with nutritional benefits along the line of lowering the cholesterol, removing toxic from the body, strengthening the immune system and even help in combating flu and headache etc! Darn, it sounds better than eating salad!

And from the number of media articles pasted at this stall within the gourmet paradise food court (behind MacDonald's at HDB Hub), i guess i would be getting a pretty authentic deal.

Don't be fooled by the second picture; thunder tea rice came as a package like the above. The only meat would come from the deep fried anchovies although most people's focus would be on the bowl of dirty green 'soup'.

Note: Don't drink the soup on its own! In case you haven't realised, it's the "tea" component in the thunder tea rice and the way of eating this Hakka's iconic dish is to pour the soup into the bowl of rice with the greenies, nuts and anchovies, and mix them up!

In my opinion, this was a bowl of healthy goodness filled with chopped vegetables, diced tofu, preserved radish, anchovies and a spoonful of peanuts! You can even choose to have brown rice instead of white rice!

Healthy looking food doesn't necessarily mean tasteless food and you must add in the "tea" to feel the difference. The saltiness of the anchovies, the crunchiness of the preserved radish, the sweetness from the vegetables, the bitter yet minty freshness from the tea and the nuttiness from the, well, peanuts.

It's like having a myriad of differing flavours combining seamlessly into one; an extremely appetising meal! Burp! p.s. i could have drunk up the remainder of the mint-basil tea but since i already had a healthy lunch, i figured i could leave some stomach for the cheng tng, the hougang six miles muah chee and  the long queue soon heng rojak from the same food court.

Day Four of The 5 Days, 4 Nights Trip to Bandung - Paris Van Java, Care Free Day & Dining at the Roadside! @ Indonesia

It was a nice morning to sweat it out in the hotel's gym but the pain from my swollen finger (thanks to the hornet sting) made it impossible for me to do any weights! I languished in bed for almost an hour before joining my family for breakfast.

As expected, we took our time to enjoy the sumptuous spread and by the time we officially stepped out of Best Western Premier La Grande hotel, it was already 9am!

Day four was a Sunday and we heard from Mr Askan and even from the hotel staff that it's car free day in Bandung with a few roads closed just for pedestrians to walk without danger! You can even roll on the road if you want. The hotel staff mentioned a few roads that would be closed and from the map, the one known as Jl Asia Afrika would be the most direct for us since it's a straight road going south from outside the hotel.

One good thing about walking was that there were ample photo opportunities with the mobile street vendors!

Another advantage was we can take it slowly to catch sights not commonly seen in our home country; for example, working at height without any safety harness! In Singapore, this seemingly lack of safety for workers would have been reported to the Ministry of Manpower.

Would you dare to buy from mobile food carts? There were many we chanced upon and i didn't dare to try in case it were to result in an upset tummy. Things would have been different if i am with the Great Kon; he WILL buy and if it's delicious, he WILL INSIST to share.

Majelis Jemaat GPIB Bethel Bandung - a Christian church.

With gantries pulled down to prevent any one / vehicle to cross, this was one scene that young Singaporeans would never get to see at home since year 2011.

Traffic came to a total standstill while everyone waited for a lumbering giant to have its right of way. Pedestrians can dash across if they want to but i am unsure if there would be any fine for making this move.

The racket the locomotive generated would piss off those living near the railway track although for a Singaporean, it's a piece of colonial industrial music that the younger generation would never get to hear for real unless they travel overseas.

Put it this way, we don't even have stretches of railway tracks that we can trek along unless the electric MRT train breaks down in between stations and commuters are required to disembark and walk back to the nearest train station.

A smaller and shorter dilapidated centre point that's a total opposite to the recently expanded one we have in the little red dot.

Jl Braga - a famous street known for art deco buildings and said to be reason Bandung was nicknamed as the paris of java! Even though i was excited enough to slow down my pace, the ladies in my group was adamant to reach the car-free Jl Asia Afrika!

A few buildings for your viewing pleasure; nothing quite interesting in my opinion although i was quite impressed by the display of patriotism!

There was a Starbucks store and i strolled in as a friend is a Starbucks card collector; p.s. i don't quite get the fascination but since i am there, might as well check if my friend needs any.

Continuing my journey after cooling myself in the air-conditioned Starbucks. The humidity in Bandung was definitely much more manageable compared to Singapore; however, walking for long distance can still work out a sweat!

Caught a group of young school children going down a side lane and i was so tempted to follow! Would have done so if i am with Alex though; not with the irritable ladies who were started to complain about the walk.

As we reached towards the end of Jl Braga, i did notice a massive display of art paintings on both sides of the street! They should be for sale as some had put up a sign for no-photography.

Bandros Bistro - one of the more interesting shop facades that's designed to be the side view of a bus!

Bakso can be found anywhere and everywhere in the city; unfortunately, i didn't have a liking for the soupy dish even though i have to admit i am not exactly a soup person.

From the map, we were just one street away from Jl Asia Afrika!

Please a take a selfie here - an attention seeking tagline that arouses curiosity! And who is this Darso the legend? According to google, he seemed to be a singer who passed away in 2011.

Finally -  Jl Asia Afrika!

Museum of the Asian Africa Conference - i was wondering why would anyone name a museum after a conference?! Turned out it was a super important event back in 1955 and if you are interested to find out more, click here

A group having a go at the mannequin challenge!

Gedung Merdeka - a heritage building designed in 1926 that currently housed "a museum displaying collections and photographs of the Asian–African Conference". Yes, the conference again! Its importance can be also felt when the entire road was renamed Asia Afrika.

Cosplayers of the horror realm; my favourite was the demon nun from the Insidious film series! To have a look, check out the posting here

For more child-friendly characters, get your kids to hug Olaf and take photographs with the transformers instead.

There was in fact nothing much that caught the fancy of my female travellers; their intent was on shopping and their eyes lighted up only when they saw lines of gazebo tents right ahead!

Okay, i can see the disappointment on their faces and it didn't help that the sun was out in full force. The ladies in my family love air-conditioned malls and heat makes them irritated.

I was all ready to hail a cab to our next destination when i saw the above; a canvas of a Japanese character dragging a long knife with blood on the tip!

Thinking it might be a haunted house, i was looking around for a ticket seller and couldn't find any. I secretly stepped in to find an empty shell! Guess it's more a stage for storytelling. Sad.

Lucky to hop onto a blue bird cab to an air-conditioned mall said to be the biggest in Bandung and the starting fare was only 8,500 rupiah!

A metallic t-rex appeared out of nowhere! As i age, i realise my sense of navigation is getting to be really bad! In the past, i was able to pull out the map and roughly make out the route that the car was travelling...

A common sight in Indonesia - peddlers on the road when cars and motorcycles stopped at traffic lights or were stuck in traffic jams. I didn't face much jams in Bandung although i have heard of legendary ones at the capital that's only about a few hours' drive away.

Arrived at Paris van Java! To read my review on the shopping centre, click here. My executive summary is that i would prefer to spend my time on outlet shopping!

Traffic at Paris van Java was terrible and it's hard to find a cab! I actually use the grab / uber app for private hire service but i had two cancellations as the drivers couldn't even get onto this road!

We didn't go back to the hotel. Instead, we proceeded to the nearby Rumah Mode; said to the mother of factory outlet shopping in Bandung! I had a really satisfying loot when i was done. :)

Took another cab and this back to the hotel as we needed to unload the purchases! This time, the journey cost us close to S$7 although there was a traffic jam and a slight drizzle.

Time for dinner and the choice was Rumah Sate (which means Satay House)! Sadly, the entire place was enveloped in cigarette smoke and stench and this was a no-no for my family members. I am devastated as the satay that were grilled outside smelt heavenly!

Nevertheless, we absolutely didn't regret our second choice; the roadside stalls near our hotel. Hygiene condition may not be optimal but the food was amazing and the pricing was cheap in comparison to what we were charged for back in Singapore! For review, check out the post here

My younger sister and mum had a massage appointment, leaving Joyce and i to make our own plans! And you want to guess what we did? We decided to walk from the hotel to a famous local snack store that's about 1.4 kilometers away!

This stretch actually had quite a few factory outlets and improvement work was ongoing for a wider pedestrian walkway. It's a good move yet i think it would be safer to barricade areas or at least have a warning sign to caution pedestrians against the hole along the pavement.

For Men factory outlet - i couldn't resist and step in for a while to buy more clothes! I was in luck too as Joyce had a better fashion eye and i didn't have to share her with my mum and Louise.

The rare traffic light with pedestrian crossing! Most people jaywalk anyway so i can understand why there are so few pedestrian crossing with the green and red man.

Got to Kartikasari in one piece despite the lack of street lights illuminating the road we were on!

Our purpose wasn't to buy anything as it's merely to ascertain if the distance would be okay for my mom to walk the next day. And since Joyce and i would be going back again on foot, there's no way i would want extra burden!

Why didn't we opt for a cab on our way back? For a simple reason that both Joyce and i are misers and it's always good to burn off the fattening food we eat with a walk.

The iconic Holland bakery!

Since the night was still early, we popped in to see what's available; well, a bakery shall be a bakery and given we have so many reputable bakeries in Singapore, i didn't see much difference in their offerings except for one.

Bika Ambon and i knew i had to grab a slice at 4,500 rupiah! It wasn't as good as the one i had at Batam Island even though it did help to satisfy some of my craving for the cake our family known as bee hive!

Joyce is a shopaholic and since she doesn't sleep much, we went back to the hypermarket at Bandung Indah Plaza; yes, the shopping centre opposite Best Western hotel

Have i ever mentioned that i can spend hours in a supermarket and i especially love to visit the hypermarkets when i am overseas; there's so much to see although i wouldn't venture into the stationery section.

As Joyce appeared to have more on her shopping list while i am more or less done with the sleeping bug slowly gnawing on me, we arranged to meet at JCo Donuts where i got a hot chocolate at 29,000 Rupiah! It came with a original glazed donut which i returned as i didn't want to fill my tummy with such sinful stuff before bedtime!

Joyce left me there for more than an hour and i was actually getting worried! My phone calls to her were unanswered and i was about to search for her when she slowly, i repeat, slowly, strolled towards me! Anyway, just a random photo of a bin tied to the railing at the overhead bridge.

Before i end this post, a picture on my injured finger a day after the hornet attacked me without any provocation at Kawah Rengganis; red and swollen!

Lam's Signatures; Lam's Abalone Noodle & Salt Baked Kampong Whole Chicken @ Marina Square [Singapore]

To be honest, i didn't know what to expect from Lam's Signatures since it's my first time hearing about this eatery and the only famous "lam" i know is hock lam beef noodle. However, i was brought there by the Great Kon; a most sought-after food connoisseur among friends!

I did some research about this lam's signatures and i am darn surprised to hear that the owner, Ah Lam, is a creator for the mini work noodle (小碗面) concept in 1997. This innovative concept has since been replicated by many noodle stalls in the industry and i am one of those happy customers who love it! p.s. above picture was taken at the end of the day as we were the last customers.

Before i start with the signatures, i would like to recommend the ice blended drinks; the above which i had was wolfberry and fruits ice blended; it would definitely appeal to those who love Chinese wolfberries! Kon's vegetable and fruits ice blended was even better with a strong dosage of vegetables that tasted utterly delicious!

Salt Baked Kampong Whole Chicken - wasn't as salty as i thought with a herbal aftertaste; frankly, although it was refreshing to have salt baked chicken every now and then, it isn't my cup of tea and i would prefer fried chicken anytime.

Abalone Noodle -   At S$7.00 a bowl, it was indeed pricey but i figured topping up the S$2 for that extra skewer of abalone pieces and scallop would be more worth it than paying S$5.00 for a bowl of "original" noodle.

It's the vinegarish, minced pork noodle style and even though i am quite happy with the amount of vinegar in the bowl, the Great Kon felt otherwise!

Noodles wise, they were al-dente and covered with an aromatic layer of appealing pork lard oil. On one hand, i was quite sad that the portion was quite little. On the other hand, we didn't get that overwhelming carbohydrate intake which would have been disastrous given that i would be having the rare heavy meal quite late at night!

Saving the best for the last!

Soon Lee Heng Satay in ST 31 Coffee House @ Ang Mo Kio Block 347 [Singapore]

This particular coffee shop very near to AMK Hub is famous for the fish head steamboat and i wouldn't have thought of ordering anything else from another stall in usual circumstances.

Our visit was nothing unusual but my elder sister and brother in law decided to order satay from this little stall anyway. According to them, many tables had a plate of satay when they last patronised the fish head steamboat and it's a fact that my family love satay!

10 sticks of pork, 10 sticks of chicken sitting on a bed of fresh cucumber and onions! Do note that it's self service here; hence, please prepare to have someone standing by to order AND collect the satay. Just another note - uncle manning the stall was said to be fierce yet with a kind tenderness towards children.

At S$0.70 a stick, they might appear pricier than normal but look closer; the pieces of meat and fats also seem bigger to justify for the higher per-stick price. Nevertheless, satay pricing had indeed spiked over the past ten years; i remember it was only about 40 to 50 cents a stick then.

Coming back, the satay from the fierce uncle was fantastic and testament to his overall control over fire and movement of the satay sticks. Despite emitting a strong aroma of addictive charcoal grill, the pieces of meat and fats weren't badly charred and in actual fact, remained juicy!

Amanda - The Healthier Steamed Brownies from Bandung [Indonesia]

The only Amanda i know is a person but in Bandung, it's a famous brand with products that foreigners like myself would buy back for friends and family in Singapore.

We purposely took a cab to one of the branches at Dago that's about 2.6 kilometers from Best Western Premier La Grande hotel and in case you are wondering what products Amanda are famed for; look for the clue in the above photo.

Brownies and to think that i would travel all the way to Bandung to purchase brownies when i am not even a big fan! Well, the steamed version from the city is a popular "souvenir" to bring back and the fact that i am there means i might as well get some.

Its popularity can be attest by two observations; one, there wasn't any sampling in the store and second, the brownies were readily packed and displayed for customers to grab and pay!

I am afraid i didn't manage to take pictures of the "real" thing but my verdict of the 'original' and 'pandan' is that i prefer the baked version which had a more satisfying texture and contained many walnuts. The steamed ones were healthier, softer and lighter yet didn't quite appeal to me.

There were other products for sale; however, as there wasn't any sampling and i didn't know how good it might be, i hauled back like 10 boxes and one box was like 750 grams!

There's another advantage for Amanda's steamed brownies; pricing! The cheapest 'original' brownies cost only 36,000 Indonesia rupiah a box while the most expensive 'cream cheese' brownies could even be cheaper than a slice of cake here in Singapore!

WTF (What's That Food) - Real Beef Shabu Burger @ Yishun Pasar Malam [Singapore] #WTFoodSG

$
0
0
Living within 5 minutes' walk from the train station has its perks and one of them is that temporary pasar malams (night markets) outside the Yishun station would take place once every few months!

While most people would go for the many ramly burger stalls, i hesitated one evening as i am honestly famished and there's no way my tummy can accept any waiting in a queue. That's when i chanced upon the above stall.

WTF (literally) - i actually remember this particular stall as it was one of a few hundred at the Chinatown Festive Street Bazaar this year that had an unforgettable name!

Back then, i wanted to try but with so many guaranteed-good food options at Chinatown (teriyaki chicken don, yong tau foo, soy sauce chicken, seafood dumplings etc etc); i had to give it a miss despite the irresistible waft of freshly grilled shabu meat!

Anyway, i am adamant to try it this time, especially when there's no queue! Why no queue? I can think of three causes; firstly, the price which, at S$5 for the beef, was slightly higher than a ramly burger; secondly, the novelty of shabu burger and lastly (thanks to a conversation i had with fellow colleagues today), some people do feel that a burger must come with a patty.

I am shallow when it comes to burgers then as anything you can put in between a burger bun can be considered a burger; even if it is just a slice of tomato, a smattering of lettuce and a splash of chilli mayonnaise.

Of course i wouldn't pay S$5 for the aforementioned burger with meagre ingredients but for the above, with a generous amount of thinly sliced 100% rib-eye, my only wish then was to grab the top bun, place it on top and gobble up the entire thing!

Patience, patience; if not you would miss out on more important ingredients like the caramelised onions that's bound to up the palatability! I should seriously make it a point to find the recipe for this amazing stuff.

According to an informative panel in front of the stall, i gathered that the burger included crunchy lettuce, sauce maison, beef shabu shabu, caramelised onions and cheese sauce. It's like a flow chart that gave me an accurate prediction that my burger was about to be ready!

Simply wrapped with a WTF sticker to hold the wrapper in place, this was taken at the comfort of my home where i can take hundred of pictures without drawing any attention.

Burger was already flattened at this time but fear not, it's still the taste that matters and it was as delicious as it smelt with the juicy meat juice oozing from the well seasoned shabu beef. I am swallowing my saliva now as i recalled the flavour that swam together with the sweetness of caramelised onions and cheese sauce!

Nothing's perfect though; i would prefer more caramelised onions and the burger bun can be grilled longer with a bigger slab of butter. If only there's also an option to add on a fried egg....; darn, i am getting greedy!

Nevertheless, i cleaned up everything; save for the wrapper.

Further to my posting on Amanda's steamed brownies, another brand heavily patronised and well loved by visitors to Bandung would be Kartika Sari.

I visited the branch at the Dago district and was totally blown away by the impressive variety of snacks, biscuits, pastry and kuehs; it's like stepping into a humongous Bengawan Solo store! You can even get a hamper if you wish to lug it back to Singapore!

See, see, see; aren't you getting wide-eyed, as i was, with the pictures so far?! That's not even a complete set as i didn't manage to take all the sections.

Since we had already purchased plenty of steamed brownies from Amanda, we honestly didn't have the strength and empty hands to buy and carry Kartikasari's signature lapis cakes! p.s. Bandung's kueh lapis (layered cake) was supposedly even better than Batam / Bintan's version; i didn't know until i returned from my trip! Must really knock myself on the head.

The much lighter dried snacks like butter toast, almond cookies etc would be a much easier load for us! As with Amanda, there wasn't any free sampling and i was in a fix on what to buy since there were so many things to choose from...

474,500 rupiah worth of snacks for family and friends!

I also got this pack of banana rolls that looked absolutely delicious! Befitting a person born under the Chinese zodiac of monkey, i adore bananas and this love can be seen in the way i seek to improvise the banana cake recipe

Pity they didn't taste as good as they appeared to be; the mashed bananas in the middle had a bitter aftertaste and were not sweet. I had to force myself to finish all six pieces as none of my family members was interested to share. Fat die me! :(

The Boring Departure Lounge @ Bandung Husein Sastranegara International Airport [Indonesia]

Noted as Indonesia's third largest airport with a city population of about 2.5 million people and just 150 kilometers from the capital, i think i am not that far off for assuming that the departure lounge of the international airport in Bandung would not bore me.

Turning from a corner once i cleared immigration and got my hand carry luggage scanned by the airport security, i regretted my decision immediately; the decision to get in earlier to check out what's in store for us to spend our time and leftover rupiah.

I was standing at the far end of the departure lounge where the boarding gate was; yes, i can see everything at one glance and the place was only that 'big'.

For those who can sleep easily (i can't as i need a bed), there's a row of rattan chaise lounges for you to get into dreamland until the PA system screamed for your name.

Kids can take refuge in the playground set. Oh wait, i don't remember seeing any kids and in it and looking closely at the above photo; it wasn't even set up properly!

One of two commercial entities in the area; a snack bar for coffee, snacks or even boxes of kueh lapis for last minute purchase to spend that last rupiah! Another one would be a bookstore. No souvenir stall, no fashion store; so how did i last that more than an hour wait until boarding time?

Looking out of the large windows like an emo old man with nothing to do. Of course not, i had my iPhone with me and i am so glad i opted for Starhub DataTravel @ S$20 for 3 Gigabytes!

Bim Burger & Fried Chicken Opposite the International Airport @ Bandung [Indonesia]

Bandung's Husein Sastranegara International Airport didn't have much to offer within its premises but don't worry if you need a decent meal before your flight as there were plenty of dining establishments just a stone's throw away!

Yes, it's literally a stone's throw away as confirmed by the above photograph which was taken on the second level of our topic today; Bim's Burger and Fried Chicken.

Avocado Float - i have no idea why but Indonesia's avocado juice is damn delicious! Joyce had been seeking for it since the first day of our Bandung trip and finally got to drink it on the last day! It was good although we thought it would be better (and less fattening) without the extra scoop of chocolate ice cream.

Two-Piece Chicken Meal - i got myself this given my love for deep fried stuff. Instead of fries, rice was given; for a short yet elated moment, i thought it was a burger!

The chicken wasn't served piping hot; however, the deep fried chicken skin remained addictively crunchy! Fried chicken was one of the better ones around and if compared to Richeese Factory, the pedas (hot) ones from Richeese were a notch higher in terms of flavour.

Butter Sauce Chicken - it was surprisingly good with an aromatic butter swirling around every bite! It's been a while since i last found rice to be so appealing! p.s. i only grabbed like one spoonful as my sister gave me a death stare when my hand edged towards her rice.

A Simple Mie Goreng Lunch at an Indonesian Singapore-style Hawker Centre on Bintan Island - 10 Minutes Drive from Angsana Bintan [Indonesia]

The resort cluster on Bintan Island was known to cater for the Singapore market and not too long ago, the Singapore currency was even accepted as payment for goods and services even though the island is managed by Indonesia!

Major problem for Singaporeans is that the prices for goods and services at the resort cluster were known to be exorbitant despite the supposed lower standard of living and this doesn't bode well for someone like i who doesn't earn much in the first place.

Fret not, i have a suggestion should you decide to make a trip to the resort cluster. Hint in the above photograph and no, i am not asking you to pack food from economically-priced stalls at Singapore's numerous hawker centres.

This is actually a hawker centre situated right within the resort cluster of Bintan Island and in actual fact, a mere 10-minute drive from Angsana Bintan where i stayed over the weekend!

My two friends were quite keen to try the hawker food and i guess why not since we were going back to Singapore later that afternoon. As usually, i couldn't quite decide what to have and eventually settled with a dish that i have always been comfortable with in Indonesia.

Mie Goreng - fried noodle!

At 15,000 rupiah (roughly S$1.60), this was sufficiently delicious enough for me although the texture was a bit hard. Honestly, it wouldn't be hard to whip up a similar version given that the stall was using the common Indomie-brand instant noodles and i just need to add in a fried egg and some diced green chilli. The only issue was the lack of wok essence (wok hei) if i cook at home!

Friend got a plate of satay; once again, i wasn't impressed. The meat was too lean and i have always preferred a fattier cut for their flavourfulness. Not sure how much they cost since my friend paid for it.

I have actually blogged about this place before but this would be the first time i am having my meal at the hawker centre. You may click here for more information on the local market, the hawker centre and their surroundings.

Ginseng Chicken Soup & BBQ Set B in Seoul Chicken Korean Restaurant @ 435 Sembawang Road (Near Chong Pang, Yishun) [Singapore]

With reference to my review of Seoul Chicken Korean restaurant last month, i mentioned that the operator insisted i should try the BBQ set the next time i were to visit.

In less than twenty days, i revisited the restaurant and this time round, i brought along my mother as she enjoys Korean cuisine and it's located pretty near to where we stay in Yishun.

As a true blue Singapore who also happens to be a non-smoker, i prefer the cooler air-conditioned indoor seating but the only way to barbecue the meat myself is to station myself at the alfresco area! I could opt for indoor seating provided the kitchen BBQ the meat on our behalf.

It was honestly not a bad idea since i have the tendency to overcook the meat. p.s. note that there is improvement on my cooking skill ever since i moved out of my parents' place.

Anyway, it's time to chill and help ourselves to the big jar of cold barley tea while we wait for our food to be served onto our table.

Ginseng Spring Chicken Stew (Samgye Tang) - now, i have drunk supposedly the best ginseng chicken soup in Seoul and even though i wasn't that impressed with it as a ginseng chicken soup, i must say the nutty toppings for the samgyetang at Seoul Chicken did bring back some nice memory of Tosokchon.

This was flavourful as a bowl of well seasoned chicken soup but just like Tosokchon, the taste of ginseng wasn't very obvious. The chicken had a tender texture and the meat fell easily from the bones; good for the older generation. At close to S$30, this was actually pricey.

BBQ Set B - in addition to the side dishes which differed from the ones we had earlier in March and the meat for BBQ, we had the option for kimchi stew, bean paste soup or seafood tofu soup.

It's a no brainer for us; seafood tofu soup since it's likely more expensive than the rest! Haha. We didn't regret the choice as it was spicy without burning our tongue and in that surprisingly cool weather that we were blessed with that day, it was shiok sipping spoonful after spoonful of the soup.

Another thing that came with the BBQ set was the cheese corn on the hot plate! Do you enjoy the butter corn kernels sold at stalls in pasar malam? Just imagine that the cheese corn was an elevated level that was addictive and tastier!

Here's our BBQ meat that consisted of pork belly, spicy marinated chicken, marinated pork collar and teriyaki chicken. The teriyaki chicken should have been the marinated boneless prime rib beef but we requested for a change as mum doesn't' take beef.

Like any decent Korean BBQ restaurant, a serving of green veggies would be given. The variety wasn't as extensive as the ones at Ju Shin Jung although it didn't quite affect me since i was feeling carnivorous that day.

A closer look at the meat we had; they were generally quite alright even though i failed to detect any exceptional factor except for maybe the pork belly. For non-marinated meat, it turned out really nice with a smoky aroma enveloping each bite! Mom opined that Ju Shin Jung was better though.

Despite my carnivorous state, i think it's still best to ingest some green vegetables to aid in gut movement even though i was actually pretty full.

Remember not to leave the meat on the heated pan for an extended period of time as they would obviously get charred; you can choose to eat them as fast as possible or put them on a separate plate.

Two Days, One Night Bintan Trip with My Singapore Polytechnic School Mates @ Angsana Bintan [Indonesia]

My schooling days in Singapore Polytechnic 20 years ago were the best times in my life and with travelling being part and parcel of a relaxing experience for a group of adults who has been working for quite some time, it's a given that we would plan for an overseas trip!

For this inaugural overseas trip, we wanted to keep things simple and eventually settled with a resort island less than an hour from Singapore; Bintan!

Without further ado, let me share with you my short itinerary. Links will be provided in due course although departing from the usual, i will not going into the details for each day since it's just two-day, one-night. :)

Reached on time at Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal to take the ferry which was supposed to leave at 11 am. Based on a recommendation by a friend, we went for the Emerald Class which gave us seat assignment and use of the exclusive Emerald Lounge (with complimentary beverages, biscuits and WiFi)!

Purchasing the Emerald Class tickets also gave us priority embarkation / disembarkation! Shall update with a separate post in due course so that you would be better informed of the differences.

Did you see the big fish in the water?! The ferry took about an hour and i didn't take many photographs as i was down with seasickness and purged out quite a bit of my breakfast that morning!

Extremely relieved to have both my feet firmly planted on concrete ground! Anyway, please remember to adjust your watch as Indonesia is an hour behind Singapore.

Remember, you have priority disembarkation for Emerald Class and that means we were the first few to clear immigration! Those who wish to stock up on cigarettes, snacks, rent a car, book a resort, buy some souvenirs can do so at the Bandar Bentan Telani ferry terminal (BRF) itself.

My friends were just fixated on one - beer! A pity i am not into alcoholic drinks and honestly, i don't even know if it is cheaper at 25,000 rupiah a can. Want a carton?  Inquire within!

Taking the shuttle bus for Angsana Bintan resort! I think this is a complimentary land transfer service for the resort although i am a bit confused by its webpage here; what's the difference between coach transfers and land transfer?

On our way to the resort that's 8 kilometers and about 10 minutes away; i have been to Bintan but it was Bintan Lagoon Resort that i went too which had a dedicated ferry terminal!

Welcomed by the sound of a traditional Indonesian gong and the dispensing of a cold towel, we arrived at Angsana Bintan Resort! As with most decent resorts, there would be a small glass of welcome drink and a tiny slice of cake.

Resort lobby that would lead us down to the main restaurant down a flight of stairs. The most interesting lobby i ever went to was in Maldives where natural, fine sand made up the flooring.

Checking in would take some time and our two alcoholic friends couldn't wait to quench their thirst; the beer drinking shall begin! As i am not too keen in beer or any alcoholic drink, i proceeded to do what i like best.

Explore the surroundings!

I didn't take long as i was with a group of nine polytechnic friends, the husband of a classmate and a toddler! The time should be spent together, rather than apart!

Daily activities were published on a screen at the lobby and some might be complimentary; do keep in mind to book in advance for those with an asterisk and note that some activities (e.g. jet ski safari) might be chargeable.

Official check in was at 3pm and there's only so much beer you can replace for lunch; hence, we chose to satisfy our lunch at the Lotus Cafe within the resort.

The Indonesia Mie Goreng (fried noodles); obviously priced a lot higher than the local hawker centre with nicer plating and more "accessories" like crackers, satay etc.

We were in discussion to go for ATV when it started pouring! There goes our plan and the ladies in our group opted for massage sessions with the resort's award winning spa! The two words "award winning" said a lot on its pricing though; a factor that the guys find hard to stomach!

We checked in to our assigned hotel rooms first; like finally and after a short rest where i took a much needed shower, the guys met at the lobby for the arrival of a vehicle.

Yes, we would be travelling out and this transfer didn't cost us a single cent as we would be having our massages outside the resort, at a fraction of the price!

D'Bintan Spa - i got this contact when i visited Pasar Oleh Oleh in 2013 and arrangement for massages and land transfer can be easily made via WhatsApp / LINE! I only gave like a 30-minute notification and the vehicle arrived at the lobby as promised.

As D'Bintan Spa is located next to the local market within the Bintan resort cluster, do remember to pay it a visit. Beer would be a lot cheaper at the provision stores there and the two male friends didn't hesitate to purchase a dozen even though they had already bought a carton back at the ferry terminal.

Not everything is cheap so do remember to compare and do your calculation well; the staff for this seafood restaurant claimed that the prices were cheaper than the resorts. It might be true but at 600,000 rupiah a kilogram for crab, it's frankly about the same price in Singapore!

A yawning cat.

On our way back and i spotted a Sumatran tiger cutout on the power grid tower. Think it's just for display since there's no tiger on the island.

Met up with the rest of our school mates for seafood dinner at a kelong! It's not so easy to get to the kelong though as we had to walk along a forest path and took a boat!

Food was pretty good and we had crabs, gong gong, satay, fish, squid, vegetables and prawns; the shocker was more the price though as it was close to S$300! However, we did have a lot of food and it worked out to about S$30 a person which wasn't that bad. There shall be a separate post! :)

Seven of us broke from the group as we had signed for another activity!

A final look at the kelong restaurant which looked kind of eerie when i took the photo. Strangely, it was a Saturday yet we were the only group dining there. Guess our spending that day had met their sales target that evening.

My camera skill wasn't good enough to show you the blinking lights at the mangrove trees that appeared just like lighting on a Christmas tree! Nevertheless, i doubt you would even know how a firefly looks like. See if you can spot it in the above photo.

After the firefly tour, we made a stopover at the same local market where D'Bintan Spa was. The ladies stocked up on snacks even though the main aim was on the Magnum ice cream bar at only 20,000 rupiah!

We rejoined the rest of our classmates (those who didn't sign up for the firefly tour) for a noisy session of card games; including UNO!

Funnily, most of us couldn't remember how to play the game even though it was one of the most popular card games in our teens! We recall a bit although not good enough to proceed with the game. Thankfully, we had parents in our group (hello, we knew each other for two decades) and it didn't take us long to start the game!

Sadly, it took us really long to game and for the beer-thirsty individuals, a faster game would be required - let's play a much simpler one; draw a card and if you are the lowest, drink! The above was necessary to illustrate the suits on a deck of playing cards as some didn't know which was the smallest; we had a great laugh as the entertainer in our group would throw questions ( heart 5 and spade five, which is the lowest etc) suddenly.

Lady luck wasn't shining on me and i had like four cans of beer! This is coming from a person who doesn't drink beer and is weak when it comes to alcohol. Of course i got a bit high and eventually slept together with my friend on the same bed!

By the time i woke up, it was 7am and i had to climb back to my own room! We had already agreed to meet at 8am for breakfast and there wasn't much time as we would be leaving for Singapore in the late afternoon.

Back in my hotel room and all alone as my assigned roommate wasn't able to come for the trip. Oh well, i had the entire room to myself and had a satisfying shower!

Breakfast at Angsana Bintan; this was tied in with our accommodation and you don't have to pay extra. Offerings were decent and i strongly recommend the juice station as the numerous glasses of natural fruit juice i had weren't charged separately!

With an hour plus to go before we departed for a traditional massage at D'Bintan Spa, i didn't waste any more time at the breakfast and left to explore on my own.

Weather had cleared and i guess we might be able to go for our ATV finally. As the pricing wasn't cheap, further coordination would be required from our activity organiser.

An infinity pool on the side of the resort - unlike the main pool, this was isolated with lesser users. If you prefer a quieter spot to soak in clean, chlorinated water and ready a novel, this would be it.

Did you spot the littler bugger?

A boardwalk leading to a group of large boulders; it may not seem much at this time but i guarantee you it would be much nicer during high tide! I shall show the photograph later in this post.

Please remember to drop by the marine centre and smile at the dozens of baby sea turtles under the tender care of the centre staff until they are about three months old! Do request for permission before you pick them out from the tank.

Building sandcastles; an activity lost on the older me even though i do occasionally build some, especially during the seasons when TOTO prize money snowballs to a few million dollars.

The vehicle from D'Bintan Spa had arrived; i was late as i had to move my belongings out of the room! By the time i am back after my massage, it would be way over the official check out time imposed by the resort.

Thankfully, our powerful classmate with contacts in the travel industry managed to get us one room with a late check out at 4pm! Anyway, i had passed by the same spot as above no less than eight times in my short one-night stay.

After a fantastic, 2-hour traditional massage at  D'Bintan Spa, we had a wallet-friendly lunch at the local hawker centre and then checked out the kueh lapis at another shop in the same vicinity recommended by the spa.

Batam Layer Cakes had a good reputation for buttery Indonesian-style kueh lapis and on Bintan Island, there's also a BLC but it's Bintan Layers Cakes! You can sample before you buy.

I recognise that everyone has varying taste preferences and while i personally thought it wasn't not as buttery and as oily as the ones in Batam, others might not feel the same one. My major grouch was actually the prices as an original kueh lapis would result in an outlay of 300,000 rupiah!

It was already 1.30pm when we got back to Angsana Bintan and even though we were keen to sign up for  the ATV, it was already fully subscribed!

There's always a backup and i went for snorkeling with the guys using my snorkeling mask from Decathlon! See the above photo? That's the same place with the boardwalk i shared earlier. I would have loved to include pictures of the snorkeling i had but i didn't realise the battery for my Olympus Tough underwater camera had gone flat!

On our way to the ferry terminal via the resort's bus shuttle after an insanely fast shower at the only room with late check out! We didn't resort (pun unintended) to bathing together although the last guy (and literally the rest of us in the room) gave a loud wa kaoz when we heard the sound of hair dryer coming from the bathroom!

Ten minutes later, we alighted at Bandar Bentan Telani ferry terminal and right opposite the entrance, you would find a gigantic statue of a garuda, a holy bird in Hinduism.

Remember the 300,000-rupiah kueh lapis from Bintan Layers Cakes? You can get a box of homemade kueh lapis for a much more reasonable pricing at this provision shop without the ferry terminal. It's not 60,000 rupiah as indicated above as that's for a much smaller piece.

The usual 1-kilogram box cost only 190,000 rupiah here! For ease of reference, do refer to the picture of the shop as above. p.s. compared to the delicious Batam Layer Cakes, this was drier and also not as buttery.

Long line of queue just to get your bags through the immigration's x-ray machine! Fret not if you are an emerald class ticket holder; you should be given priority access to use the x-ray machine!

Crowded departure lounge where everyone would wait for the ferry.

There were shops within the area where you can spend your last Indonesian rupiah (maybe on kopi luwak coffee). A friend had advised that it's best to spend all you have since the currency undergoes design change quite often and old notes might not be accepted.

Again for the Emerald Class ticket holders, you have access to the Bintan Executive Lounge! p.s. it wasn't as nice as the Emerald Lounge at Tanah Merah ferry terminal and no one bothered to check my ticket. Maybe that's the reason why it's also as crowded inside...

Priority embarkation too!

Big and comfortable leather seats; i think i am getting too pampered in this trip. The usual me would be satisfied with just the normal free-seating arrangement but now that i am aware of the Emerald Class, there's no going back....

This boat came with an outdoor seating area which was also smoke free! That's good news for me as my body doesn't operate well at seas in a contained vessel.

Supposed to be showing the dark clouds as I am worried it would start drizzling again and i would condemned back to the enclosed area.

We didn't quite make use of the luxurious seats in the ferry as almost everyone was out at the outdoor deck. Reason being we were planning for our next overseas trip and it was confirmed to be in Bali, a year later; amazingly advance planning!

Back to Singapore.

That's the whole group of us from Singapore Polytechnic DMKT Class 02; the trip was extremely fun and it's a pity we didn't manage to have everyone on board. Oh well, looking forward to next year!

The above building by the side of the beach at Angsana Bintan didn't look much from afar and our purpose for walking over was to see if it's the resort's marine centre and whether there's someone who could answer our queries pertaining to the sea activities like snorkeling.

My question was answered (i.e. no snorkeling trip as the monsoon is late this year) and while my friends were waiting for their questions to be answered, i ventured to the other end where there's a tank.

Thinking it's just a tank with water for people to wash their snorkeling masks, you can so imagine the surprised look on my face when i realised it's filled with swimming baby sea turtles!

I called my friends over and after asking for permission which was granted, they proceeded to pick up the babies; frankly, my two guy friends were literally wide-eyed and totally mesmerized with the cute little thing on their palm.

Not many could claim to have stroked the shell of a live and kicking sea turtle, what's more a baby! According to the informative staff, they would keep the babies in the tank for three months, after which they would be released to the ocean.

If you are lucky, you may even chance upon young sea turtles swimming around the resort when you are snorkeling. The bigger ones usually don't drop by unless they are laying eggs.

Cute right? Please do handle them with care if you are there and as mentioned earlier, do ASK for permission. Daily feeding at 2pm! :)

Dookki Korean Tteokbokki Buffet - An Interesting Korean Food Concept @ Suntec City Mall [Singapore] #dookki_sg

$

0
I am unsure if there are others who feel the same way as i did whenever i watch Korean variety shows like Running Man venture into their local markets and celebrities start indulging in street food like Tteokbokki; i get frustrated as i couldn't have any and instant ones i bought from Korean supermarkets were downright crappy!

While Singapore has been inundated with Korean bbq restaurants to satisfy the citizens' craving for grilled meat in recent years, this is the first time i hear of an eatery offering a buffet for Tteokbokki (Korean rice cakes); you get to taste a wider variety at a higher quality! Maybe even better than those from the Korean variety shows.

Dooki has only operated for 18 days yet through apparent word of mouth, it had gained quite a following and there was already a long queue when we arrived. I am so glad my friends had made a reservation and we were ushered in almost immediately.

I couldn't quite decide when to include the above photograph but guess the summary might be beneficial to have it nearer to the start of this post for a few reasons; the pricing, the time limit for your meal and the all-important instructions!

Basic table setup - the induction cooktop, a pot on it for your rice cakes, round saucepans that are actually your dining bowls, a metal canister that holds the soup base, a ladle to mix and stir the tteokbokki mix. Missing from the table are a deep and big metal bowl for the ingredients that you pick from the self bars and a deeper saucepan-like ladle for the tteokbokki sauce.

Like Yoogane, there's a drawer by the side where you can pull out for your cutlery and typical of Korean restaurants, there are tissues for you to wipe your mouth! Hate it when some dining establishments charge us separately for wet tissues.

What are self bars? The above would keep you a good overview of them; well, they are your typical counters for buffet items and wait, first timers like us should wait for the assigned staff member to begin a required introduction.

Please be assured it will not be a historical lesson on the company's origins! Rather, the staff member would patiently explain the table setup, how to enjoy dookki (which means two meals) and what expect from the buffet lines.

Like the different kinds of tteokbokki; the ones which are more popular, have a softer texture, unique shapes etc. All this while, i thought Korean rice cakes were limited to the white chalk-like ones! An eye opener indeed.

Aside from tteokbokki, you could also mix in vegetables, sausages, sotong balls, meat balls, fish cake etc. Do note that in reality, there were more than the 8 ingredients shown on the display poster!

In case your tummy could still take in more carbohydrates (i honestly couldn't and wouldn't want to as i am a huge fan for carbo-light meals), you may indulge further in a bowl of Korean ramyeon.

Another Korean street favourite, especially during winter time; fish cake in soup! This was so good to have on a cold winter night and i remember it well in my Korea trip

Instructions on how to enjoy your fish cake! Take a picture using your mobile phone and refer to it later when you are indulging in a skewer of fish cake.

Noodles to go with your tteokbokki; QQ noodle, glass noodle, rice noodle, instant noodle and sweet potato noodle. Noodle lovers would be ecstatic!

Create your own tteokbokki sauce of varying spicy level - combine them using the following five sauces that were imported from Korea; dookki, tteokbokki (spicy), jajang, gungjung and flame (spicy)!

Not sure how much to put? Refer to the above recipes! Still not confident enough? Check with the staff member who was, at this point, still explaining to us. Honestly, a hungry man can't absorb much and furthermore, i was also busy taking photographs!

Trays of cooked food with simple Korean deep fried like chicken, mandu (dumplings), sweet potatoes and fish cake. I did recall that the staff member was saying the deep fried food were generally cold as you could also mix them into the tteokbokki pot. Hm... or did she say we can dip the fried food into the sauce?

Kimchi, corn and seaweed - the basic ingredients for the second meal; fried rice!

This was the friendly and chatty staff member assigned to us and she was so passionate of her work; i found out later she is actually the manager when she dropped by our table to solicit feedback on our dining experience.

By the way, drinks are free flow and besides plain water, you have selections like coca cola, sprite, iced lemon tea, sarsi, fanta grape and juscool sparkling apple!

As expected, we were already clueless right after the manager was done with the introductory session and had to seek her help to concoct the tteokbokki sauce.

The saucepan-like ladle (actually more like the measuring cup we use for baking) was actually very precise and aligned with the recommended recipes to give you one full cup sufficient enough for the tteokbokki pot.

Let's start with the deep fried food first since my tummy couldn't wait any longer; the dumplings were good, chicken was unimpressive and the rest were okay except for the sweet potato which was, well, sweet!

Had a skewer of Korean fish cake - it was as delicious as i remember although my friend forgot to put in the soup which was unforgettable memory i had in Korea.

Finally, it's time for tteokbokki and you may refer to your individual place-mat on the instructions; start with the base soup, indicate the highest level for the induction cooktop and wait for it to boil!

Mix in the specially concocted tteokbokki sauce and bring it to boil.

Get ready your pot of uncooked ingredients and throw them in! To prevent chaota (burnt) at the bottom of the pot, do remember to lower down the induction's indicator.

Voila - time to indulge! We opted for the non spicy sauce although i can still taste a tinge of spiciness. Oh well, didn't quite bother me and i am just happy to eat a lifetime worth of quality tteokbokki.

It's interesting to try the different types of Korea-imported tteokbokki and i am totally taken by the ones which were cottony soft and didn't stick to my teeth. Another favourite was the above; with the appearance of mini-hotdog, i was surprised to find that the tteokbokki sauce has a sweet potato filling!

Second round!

This time round, we opted for the slightly spicy tteokbokki sauce and i must admit it tasted even better with a shiokness that totally excites the taste buds! It's a pity we didn't have sufficient stomach for a third round with an even spicier sauce!

Another round of fish cake skewers; this time with soup. Strangely, it didn't taste as good and i think it was because i forgot to follow the instructions to add in soy and tteokbokki sauces. :(

Our second meal - the fried rice. I am amazed that i could still ingest additional carbohydrates when i already had so much! And to think that i seldom have rice / noodles / bread for dinner.....

Given our clueless-ness again, we requested help from a young staff member who assisted us to get the necessary ingredients, scoop up the excess tteokbokki sauce and fry everything up so expertly!

And you know what; it was a damn good portion of fried rice; like a super delicious bibimbap without any meat and a nice, yummy conclusion to the end of our Tteokbokki buffet.

=====

It was a one-of-a-kind dining experience and i believe my mom and younger sister would enjoy this Tteokbokki buffet; shall bring them along and try the spicier Tteokbokki sauce next time! Joyce would not be able to join us as she is still maintaining a strict no-carb, ultra low-carb diet. Poor her (cannot join us mah), poor me (would eat too much carbo).

Additional Information
Service was great and my friend noticed that water was even served to those who were queuing outside.

On whether the meal is authentically Korean - there were groups of Koreans dining near us and Dookki is a well established brand in South Korea with over 100 branches!

Mie Goreng @ Angsana Bintan's Lotus Cafe [Indonesia]

The usual me would not want to dine in a hotel / resort unless the meal comes free in the case of breakfast that normally comes with accommodation. However, when you are in a big group, as i was in my recent Bintan trip, it's easier to just go with convenience!

Therefore, we decided to have lunch at Angsana Bintan's Lotus Cafe; it will take a while before we can get our room cards anyway and we were already nearing the end of lunchtime.

Order was made and this serving of crackers was put on our table. I presume it was complementary and happily took a piece; it wasn't prawn crackers and i thought it tasted more like tempeh, which i generally didn't quite like despite its popularity among Indonesians.

My 185,500 rupiah Mie Goreng (fried noodles); the conversion would place it at almost S$20 and even though it was the most expensive mee goreng i ever have, it came with a few pricey accessories like satay and a piece of unrecognizable meat.

Cracker here was much better as it's more like the prawn crackers i like; big, thick, chunky. If only this was given instead of the tempeh-tasting one. Achar wasn't impressive.

Still don't know what to name this but we shall call it chicken meat exhibit A; the marination failed to compensate the dryness of the meat although it was rather meaty.

Now coming to the crown jewel; the noodle! It was flavourful and decent enough for me to reminisce the good plate of mie goreng i had back in Bintan when i was on a mission trip as part of my national service. Not the best but good enough. Without any fatty piece, i am actually quite surprised that the lean meat chicken satay tasted tender and nice!

Hualong Fishhead Steamboat & Tze Char (華龍魚頭爐,煮炒) @ 347 Ang Mo Kio [Near Singapore's AMK Hub]

Ever since i scrapped my car a year ago, some of you might have noticed a significant drop in food postings as it's more inconvenient for me to check out places that are less accessible and on most weekends, i am just too lazy to venture out of my comfy, little nest

However, my family members are always keen to check out new dining establishments and given my mom's love for fish and soupy stuff, my elder sister suggested having fish-head steamboat at Ang Mo Kio Block 347!

It's Joyce's second visit to Hualong and although I am not a big fan of fish-head steamboat, i am easily placated so long the stall offers a wide variety of tze char dishes!

And there were many to choose from at Hualong, judging from the above menus. Since there were seven adults and two kids (who can eat adult portions), i left the ordering to the older generation who might have dietary restrictions.

Fishhead Steamboat (Red Grouper) - the operator claimed their steamboat to be one of the best in Singapore as no MSG is added and their soup was made of "old mother hen, anchovies, yellow beans, rock sugar etc" that's slow cooked for many hours using the traditionalists' favourite charcoal.

Personally, the soup was indeed sweet yet not overly laden with salt; the kind of plain jane yet homely broth that i could probably down a few bowls without getting jelak. The fish tasted so smooth and fresh but i am satisfied with just taking a small piece as i know the rest love fish more than i do.

Venison with Red Wine - Tender and infused with the enticing aroma of red wine, i couldn't help feeling guilty whenever i had venison as i keep thinking of bambi!

Marmite Chicken - strangely, i felt like i was having Korean style chicken although this was better than the typical Korean-style ganjang chicken; sweet, addictive and blessed with flavourful chicken skin!

Honeydew Wasabi Prawns - with just a light hint of wasabi surrounding a thick batter encapsulating each prawn, i didn't think this should be classified as wasabi prawns. In fact, the fruits left a deeper impression.

Salted Egg Calamari - on one hand, this was heavy with the flavour of salted egg and as per my review for the wasabi prawns, this would be appropriately named. However, on the other hand, on a personal preference; i like my salted egg calamari sweeter. #complicated humans

Homemade Beancurd with Radish - this was so good; we regretted ordering the "small" portion! As expected, homemade beancurd was silky smooth; however, the combination matters in this case. Add in the preserved radish (chai po), light-coloured sauce and the fried shallots for culmination into an appetising dish that's perfect for a bowl of plain white rice.

Chilli Crab - at 600 grams a crab, this would be the kind of chilli crab i love; fresh and spicy yet a bit sweet with a strong dosage of tomato. However, the two elderly ladies on our table (my mom and Joyce's mother in law) opined that it's not spicy enough! How could that be? Louise and i were literally sweating on our foreheads.

Buns - love mini-sized buns as it translates into a psychological illusion of lesser carbohydrates which is necessarily when we were already super duper full!

Within the thin layer of deep fried crust laid a super soft, pillowy inside that was just the thing to go with the chilli crab sauce! Despite a bulging tummy, i couldn't control taking one again and again!

Burp! p.s. that's not my tummy.

Sunset on the Plane from Bandung to Singapore

$

This isn't the first time i am declaring my love for taking planes; for a mere human, there's only so much we can see since we are not organically blessed with wings that might have enabled us to soar above the clouds.

Furthermore, my childhood years of being exposed to stories, dramas and movies of Chinese mythology and legends have always made me envious of immortals who could apparently ride the clouds just like one would do with a car.

Of course, i grew up and although i am still not discounting immortals from my belief, i have gotten round to the sad fact that i would never possess supernatural powers nor immortality and the only way for me to ""fly" would be to take the airplane!

The first time i took a plane was 22 years ago and i vividly remember it was a Garuda Indonesia flight to the city of Medan. Since then, i have taken countless trips and i never fail to be in awe of the sight below when i am a few thousand feet above the ground.

However, i am seldom lucky enough to take a flight that's timed at sunset. Alright, the blame is mine since i am cheapo by nature and air tickets are usually much cheaper early in the morning or at night.

In addition, even if i am fortunate enough to catch the sunset, i am usually seated on the other side of the plane and in those trips, seats were fully taken up.

Hence, i am real happy on my journey back from Bandung to Singapore as there were ample seats on the other side for me to take photos of the spectacular sunset!

See the sun rays that were cast onto the ocean!

And have your eyes pleasured by the flaming auras rising above the clouds. I have never seen the aurora borealis but i thought this would fall under a similar category. p.s. geologists / geography students would likely slap their forehead twice upon reading my comment.

The setting sun in its final glory as it descends for its daily slumber.

Had to make use of the special sunrise / sunset setting on my Nikon DSLR camera to take the above two photographs. It was a beautiful sight although the airplane window had resulted in the bouncing of reflection.

Remember to move your eyes occasionally away from the sun as it could be uncomfortable for some people despite the lower light intensity.

Last photograph as the looming clouds moved to block the sun from us.
