Relaxing Six Days, Five Nights Bangkok Trip - Day Five!

$

As part of my usual work routine, i am usually up at 6.30am but when i am on vacations, it's quite rare to find me awake before 6.30 in the morning unless there's a plane to catch or i am restricted by the itinerary of a tour package.

Today's different as i am already out by 7am which means i likely woke up at 6! At this moment, we were purchasing bread as our plan that day might result in a late breakfast. I am alright with skipping the most important meal but not Alex.

Taking the BTS; our favourite mode of transport in Bangkok this trip as our hotel, Park Plaza Sukhumvit, was less than 200 meters away.

Know Bangkok well? We were back at Saphan Taksin BTS station!

It's not even 8am and the street was already buzzing with activity. Guess the target was on the tourist crowd as Saphan Takin, aside from being the gateway to Asiatique the Riverfront Night Market, is also the place to take the ferries traversing Mekong River.

My intention was to take the Chao Phraya tourist boat but it only runs the service from 9.30am! Argh! Can only blame myself for not checking in advance even though this was planned only the night before.

Snapshot of the route - i wasn't keen in checking out all the landmarks as my objective for this trip remained clear; shopping even though the Wang Lang market looked promising. Oh well, no point talking about this as we didn't have the patience to wait another 90 minutes.

We joined the queue despite not knowing where the local service would be bringing us to! That's the point of having an overseas trip; some excitement due to unplanned, spontaneous decisions!

Another ferry had arrived; in Bangkok, the locals relied heavily on the water ferries as roads can be terribly congested. I can vouch for it as i once took it with my mum and travelled from Chinatown to somewhere near Platinum; cheap and fast!

A ticket conductor on the ferry! Now i am excited as i didn't know then how much the rate would be although i doubt i would be scammed. Worse come to worse, i shall jump into the water.

She used the metal container to keep the money and ticket stubs; it's quite interesting to see her going through the process which was accurate and speedy!

Our tickets; think it's 14 baht each.

Ferry going the opposite direction; Mekong River at this Bangkok juncture is actually rather wide and from what i understand, there's a mix of both salt and freshwater as Bangkok is rather near the sea.

Sight along the way - while the side we came from was developed with towering commercial buildings, the other side exuded an aura of nostalgia; it's like a different world altogether.

I told myself that the next time i go Bangkok, i shall TRY to explore the other side and one motivating factor should be the temple above.

Honouring the Chinese God of War, Guan Yu, on the second level, it's a unique structure to behold along the river! Other saints / gods include the Jade Emperor and maybe Zheng He. Well, i cannot confirm until i am physically there.

Wat Kalayanamit - famous for a humongous seated Buddha statue within the main hall. It was built around the same period that Singapore was found; six years later.

The other side again.

Main reason for taking the ferry so early in the morning - to pay Wat Arun a visit! And imagine the crestfallen look on my face when i saw the construction work going on.

We alighted right opposite Wat Arun as i remember this jetty to be close to Wat Pho, which was another iconic temple in Bangkok that we could probably visit now that Wat Arun was closed.

Sad................

It was too early; give it another few more hours and you would a hive of activity in this compound as shops would be open, selling touristy trinkets and mementos to overseas visitors.

The outdoors would also be filled with food carts offering delicious, local snacks and meals. At least that's what i remember from my first trip to Bangkok which was in year 2007.

Hopped into a Gloria Jean's Coffee outlet as it was air conditioned and there's free Wi-Fi! Breakfast was sucky and i think by this time, i cooked better tasting omelettes than the one here.

Wat Pho - unfortunately, our dear Alex wasn't keen and as i had been to Wat Pho on quite a few occasions, i was actually pretty pleased to follow his direction.

Only issue was "where should we go next"?

I thought of the nearby Khao San road, a place that has eluded me in the past! As it didn't look too far on the map, i suggested walking. Wrong decision since Alex has the tendency to get increasingly grouchy under the hot sun.

Praying that luck was on my side, i tried to point out notable landmarks in Bangkok's old city; like the Ministry of Defence building.

Lak Mueang - the name means city pillar and i honestly didn't know this shrine housing the city pillar was so highly revered in Thailand! The pillar was erected in 1782 when King Rama I moved the capital to Bangkok.

The shrine was built first while the grand palace right across was constructed later as the city pillar should always be the "first building".

Pigeons along the way.

Street puppy sucking the milk from a stray dog; dogs are common in Bangkok and i can only count my blessings that i didn't step on any dog shit in the six days i was there!

I would not have given a look to yet again another Thai shrine but this was different as the statue was female and her action was somewhat different.

Mother Earth Squeezing Her Hair - this was constructed in 1917 and the deity was quite a common goddess in Thailand, Burma, Cambodia and Laos. To read more, click here

My navigation had always been good but recently, i realised it was no longer as accurate and i tend to go into a different lane. Don't know if i should blame the map or myself.

Although there was a market, it didn't seem like the same one i often saw on websites, newspapers or even on the television which was much more crowded and congested.

Pedigree dogs on the roadside.

Things for sale were generally second handed goods and Thai amulets; both of which failed to attract our attention. Alex, at this point, had gotten grouchy.

Oh well, guess luck wasn't on our side and it's a fact that the sun was getting a bit too warm for our weakling. Poor chap didn't get to see much and i was feeling guilty.

I hailed a cab and upon boarding, i told the cab driver "Dusit Zoo". Alex was elated as he always like the zoo although the cab driver didn't know what the heck i meant! We had to hail another cab and thankfully, the cab driver knew exactly where to send us.

The sufferer was me at Dusit Zoo as i was exhausted after close to three hours! To read more on Thailand's oldest zoo, please check out the page here

Lunch beckoned and i was anticipating the next item on my pre-planned itinerary! First thing, take a cab from Dusit Zoo to Phaya Thai BTS; p.s. i did try to show the cab driver where i wanted to go but he didn't seem to understand. I should honestly take a course on the Thai language.

Taking the tuk tuk was another consideration; however, the proud persona in me cannot stand the fact that my navigation could be bad and opted instead to figure my way to the restaurant!

One possible route was through a side lane on the train track even though i couldn't be too sure if there's indeed an opening; hence, i decided to play safe.

The eventual route i took was quite confusing but i got our asses to Pee Aor for its yummy lobster tom yam noodles! For my review and a much better direction on how to get to Pee-Aor, click here

Took the BTS after the meal as i wanted to go to Big C (the one opposite Centralworld) for its supermarket that's the must-visit if you want to get Thai snacks / grocery! The above photo shows a food truck event outside Amarin Plaza.

Walking past the Erawan Shrine; in case you have not heard, there's another calamity at the shrine two days ago when a person drove into the shrine and there were seven injured parties, two of whom are Singaporeans.

Didn't take any photo in Big C although we were carrying bags of goodies on our hands as we made our way back on the BTS. I should have taken a taxi since traffic on the road was relatively smooth.

Rested for a while at Park Plaza (it had been a long, tiring day) and it's time to travel to Asiatique the Riverfront Night Market, again! There were things i am interesting in purchasing and given that this was the last night in Bangkok, i better get my butt going!

So Pho - Halal Vietnamese Cuisine @ Nex Shopping Mall [Singapore]

I have decided - Vietnam is a country i would add to my wanderlust list before the end of 2017. For someone who had an initial bad impression of Vietnamese cuisine, i am pleased to announce (to fans of Vietnamese food) that the craving for Vietnamese food has been on the recent rise.

It just made perfect sense for me to plan a trip to Vietnam (either Hanoi or Saigon) but before then, i shall have to make do with Singapore-based Vietnamese restaurant; for example, So Pho!

With seven branches in Singapore, i don't understand why it took me so long to pay my first visit and even then, this patronage was totally unplanned as we simply didn't know what to eat Nex and just happened to stroll past So Pho.

Hunger had resulted in the stomachs putting up a protest and i thought we
ordered quite a lot for just two persons; especially with the fact that Alex is hardly a big eater.

Homemade Lemongrass Tea
I have had better one; this was too lightly flavoured and i admit i am a sucker for sweeter and thicker lemongrass tea that bursts with therapeutic aroma.

Mixed Appetiser
Consisted of notable Vietnamese appetisers (prawn cake, summer roll and fried spring roll), this mixed appetiser would be the one to order if you want variety.

Summer roll (that translucent wraps) was not popular with us as the minty taste can be a major turn-off as it did to the both of us. Fried spring rolls contained vermicelli and minced meat; however, i very much prefer the local vegetarian spring rolls with turnips!

Note - these are not drumsticks.

'Bone' was actually sugar cane which added a delectable sweetness to the prawn cake that was like a rich prawn-based fish cake. Very satisfying as our teeth tore off the 'meat' from the 'bone'.

Noodle with Grilled Chicken and Spring Roll
I absolutely adore the dry noodles in Vietnamese cuisine even though the soup-based pho was the one attracting much higher attention. Time to mix everything up!

The overall feel i gathered was that the dish was on the sour side with a strong nutty after flavour that veered towards a slight bitterness towards the end. The lemongrass chicken, sadly, would have been better if the infusion of lemongrass was intensified.

Mango with Glutinous Rice
Thought for a moment that the waitress had wrongly passed me the wrong dessert as the cut pieces on top did appear to be more beancurd like than mango cubes.

Served warm, it was the highlight of our meal although the mango could have been sweeter. Key selling point was definitely the green glutinous sticky rice drenched in a pool of creamy milk and sweet gula melaka that culminated in a delicious dessert i find irresistible!

Coffee Hive - Coffee Kaya Toast Set @ Novena Square 2 [Singapore]

It dawned on me that whenever i go out with my mum, we would eventually end up having a cup of kopi and this particular day was no exception.

Louise recommended Coffee Hive not because she had tried it before; she remembered a long queue at its order counter at lunch every single time she was in the vicinity and assumed the stuff must be pretty good.

Knowing that my family members can help to share the fats, i went with the coffee kaya toast set that came with two half boiled eggs, coffee / tea (kopi for me) and two slices of cut toast with option for butter / butter sugar / kaya / peanut butter spread.

My kopi was slightly on the bitter side which didn't quite meet my cut but my sister was happy with her teh c. Soft boiled eggs were perfect; put it this way, there's a high chance Alex would be having a second serving if he were there.

Verdict was split on the kaya butter toast. Kaya wasn't cloyingly sweet with butter adding a creamier touch and the bread was toasted just right; featuring a soft-crisp texture that was charred nicely. My issue was on the thickness; either thin down the toast or double the kaya and butter!

Last Day of My Relaxing Six Days, Five Nights Bangkok Trip!

An early morning excursion the day before took a toll on me and i slept till 9am. I could have delayed the "wake-up" till much later but there's an important appointment i had to keep.

Our last massage session at Urban Retreat! Experience was so amazing; i regretted not extending my stay just so i could indulge in the relaxing kneading, bending, cracking for an hour or two a day.

A short distance from Urban Retreat was a row of shophouses and one shop stood out for its orange facade. It was actually a massage parlour, Siam Massage, that i had patronised twice this trip. If you have been following my day by day itinerary, you should have recalled the instances when masseurs asked for tips after the sessions. Same shop.

Rate card for your reference in case you have spent most of your money on shopping and couldn't quite afford the pricier massage at Urban Retreat.

Anyway, my purpose wasn't so much to check out Siam Massage; objective was to visit 7-11 convenience store as my friend had requested for a particular brand for seedless dried tamarind known as Tamarind House!

Had to draw Alex's attention away from KFC as we have not had breakfast and i know the bugger had been wanting to have some fried chicken. I couldn't understand why we need to have fast food when we are in a country filled with delicious local food.

The Westin that's opposite Terminal 21 had a supermarket called Top; another place where you can get bigger tubs of Tamarind House's tamarind products.

After our last meal (omelette rice again) at Pier 21, we descended to the level where Mount Sapola was located. My most expensive purchase this trip; ultrasonic aroma diffuser that only cost about S$180 for the large one!

Had to drop by Gourmet Market @ Terminal 21 as i couldn't find the other stuff that my friend had requested. No choice; she would have to make do for other brands. The good thing was that Gourmet Market had someone dispensing sampling for tamarind products and that's helpful!

Back to Park Plaza Hotel for a final bath before we dragged our luggage out to check out. The concierge helped to call for a cab after our very smart Alex affirmed immediately to paying 500 baht! My conversation with him was a maximum of 500 baht!

Whatever the case, i endeavored to be at peace when i am overseas and let's now focus on the international currency notes pasted on the ceiling of the cab.

Reaching suvarnabhumi airport.

Giveaway sign - the many parking airplanes with the purple tail. The national airline of Thailand; Thai Airways, which also happen to be the airline we were taking for our flight back to Singapore.

Arrival - after taking our luggage out of the boot, the cab driver asked for Singapore dollars so that he could add to his "collection"! I am so happy we had Texas Chicken at Changi Airport on Day One as i managed to break my tens into twos.

Checking in - the customary photograph of the yaksha demon warrior statue. Some of you might remember they used to be at the arrival hall and there's an article here explaining their move to the departure check-in area instead.

Last meal in Bangkok - BURGER KING!!!!!!!! I gave in to Alex's demand.

These boxes of mini Bangkok biscuits were delightful and i would strongly suggest you take some samples and judge for yourself! I bought a few boxes thinking i would buy more at the shop nearer to my gate on the other end. Spare me the lugging around at the humongous airport.

Time then was 3.30pm and our flight was at 4.25pm; almost an hour later. I dumped my stuff with Alex near our departure gate and told him to wait for me while i purchase more of the Bangkok biscuits. Time then was before 3.50pm and i was hardly two steps away from Alex when i heard an urgent last call message for our flight!

Why such an early "last call"!? Because we had to bloody take the shuttle bus to the taxiway where our plane was parked! Did i get my Bangkok biscuits? No, i didn't get enough for friends who asked me to buy for them!

@#$%%$#$%^$#$%^ - i was pissed.

What's more; the flight was delayed and it eventually departed at 4.40pm!!!! It didn't help either that it was rather warm in the plane.

Mood changed for the better after i got my meal! Remember it was quite delish except for the raw tasting green beans.

The beauty of the clouds when the sun set.

An explosion of light pollution and the declining plane altitude signify our return back to the place we call home (and some others call little red dot); Singapore!

Luggage collection after splurging at the Shilla Duty Free Shops; i was honestly frustrated for being deprived of this shopping enjoyment back in suvarnabhumi.

Ju Hao Xiao Long Bao (聚豪拉面小笼包) @ Novena Square 2 [Singapore]

Moral support was needed in my sister's confrontation with the staff of California Fitness at Novena Square; this was before the unfortunate news kicked in with the gym's immediate closure. After she was done, hunger kicked in and we decided on a xiaolongbao meal after much deliberation!

Place; Ju Hao Xiao Long Bao - a collaboration with MOF. Nowadays, i made it a point to ask if i could take photographs and in this instance, permission was granted.

Strangely, i was stopped abruptly by the waitress after i took the above signboard at the entrance. Her stand was that taking food would be fine but other than that, the others would not be permitted.

Hence, i think it's fair for me to indicate right here that if MOF / the restaurant is uncomfortable with the photos i have uploaded to this post, please feel free to contact me at a6729@singnet.com. In the meantime, let's proceed with the dishes we had. :)

Juicy Steamed Pork Dumplings - there were two options; five pieces or eight pieces. As my sister, my mom and i are mindful of our weight yet greedy to try the salted egg dumplings, deferring to the lower quantity sounded favourable.

Chockful of sinfully oily meat juice, i didn't find the xiaolongbao exceptional and felt that the taste was generally flat without any surprising element that had the effect to wow us.

Steamed Salted Egg Dumplings - identified by the yellow tip on one of the dumplings, this was better flavoured than the steamed pork dumplings. The only issue was that with all the fad surrounding salted egg, these didn't give us the right off impression it was salted egg. Put it simply, it was just saltier than the normal xiaolongbao.

Wanton with Vinegar & Chilli Oil - the redness wasn't glaring enough and the taste didn't meet up to the expectation of the similar-named dish at Crystal Jade. However, the chef was extremely generous with the diced up garlic and they made the wantons very appetising! It might not as good as Crystal Jade version but honestly delicious in a class of its own.

Prawn Fried Rice - The similarity to the famous one at Din Tai Fung stopped at the appearance (and the name); it was rather bland and the rice had a harder texture. No, it didn't break our teeth although we can find the difference.

Red Bean Pancake - Aside from the thick crust which resulted in a less than satisfying bite, i must say the spread of roasted sesame seeds played an important role in enhancing the aroma and the chef didn't scrimp on the red bean paste! Those who are afraid it would be cloyingly sweet, i call you it wasn't.

Osmanthus Jelly Cake - now, this was so pretty; i initially didn't have the heart to eat it. Served cold, the texture was soft enough for me to pop one right into the mouth so that i can slowly savour it and wait for the burst of fragrance from the osmanthus flowers and Chinese wolfberries! Yummy!

Three Little Pigs - Where Fairy Tale Takes a Back Seat @ Takashimaya Ngee Ann City [Singapore]

$

0
The childhood story on the three little pigs left such a deep impression on me that i know it's never going to be a straw or wooden house for me when i grow up; not that i have much a choice when over 70% of the population in Singapore lives in concrete public housing.

Of course, i am not going to discuss with you about the dynamics of local housing today. Instead, i am going to share with you about the three little pigs restaurant. Sorry to be popping the bubble but this dining establishment's signature meat is their pork chop!

I know it sounded morbid although for a pork lover, i am not exactly sympathetic! Just for the record, this recommendation came from Louise, my younger sister. Appended below were the dishes we indulged in that night.

Longan Longan Drink
Your typical ice cold drink filled to the brim with longans that's an immediate thirst quencher on a hot day. I like it although my heart continues to be drawn towards the cheng thng at Ye Lai Xiang and Xue Hua Fei.

Signature Pork Chop on Rice
I noted the display on the menu but i am still appalled when this was served to me! Presentation obviously was not the top priority and this appeared, to put it in simple term, similar to a plate of chap chye png (mixed vegetables rice) i could purchase from a food court.

Thankfully, the specially blended spice marination was delectable and reminded me of the grilled honey pork chop i had in Chatuchak Market! It was a bit dry and the juiciness kicked in only towards the stretch where the fat was. Most perfect was in fact the sunny side up with a sprinkling of sesame seeds.

Signature Pork Chop Vermicelli
Looking like a bowl of white pasta, it's the same hand-pounded pork chop sitting on a nest of vermicelli (thick bee hoon).

The savoury house gravy added much needed flavour to the plain vermicelli and surprisingly good. Pork chop was more tender yet less flavourful. If only there's more consistency to its juiciness and flavourfulness.

Forest Mushroom Soup
Full of the texture that i always enjoyed from a good bowl of mushroom soup, this was creamy and rich with just one issue; it was a tad too salty.

Casserole of Roasted Farmed Chicken
With a chef-recommended sign, my sister decided on the only chicken dish we had on our table. I was expressing my disapproval as the three little pigs would hence be reduced to two! The two souls would be deprived of their last sibling when they meet in heaven.

Joke aside, we were totally sold on the tomato-based vegetable stew that would be a godsend in cold weather! The chicken meat was succulent with thin yet well marinated chicken skin. Even though I couldn't help her with the meat, i was all excited to eat the yummy skin for her.

A-One Claypot House - Atas Porridge Dishes @ VivoCity [Singapore]

$
0
0
Claimed to be the world's ranked number one porridge (天下第一粥), i have heard of A-One for quite a number of years now although in addition to its fabulously-claimed porridge, there's also a fair share of comments regarding its high pricing.

Mom enjoys porridge, especially when the ingredients are fresh and the porridge is served piping hot! In A-One, the porridge is delivered in a claypot that locks in the hot temperature for a longer period of time. This obviously benefits my mom; however, her son (as in I), has always preferred room-temperature porridge!

Since both mom and younger sister were patrons of A-One before, i left the ordering in their good hands; two types of porridge, deep fried pumpkin and lotus root with creamy egg sauce, spinach with assorted eggs and one hot tea to be shared.

Assorted Dried Fruit Tea (果粒茶) - this was surprisingly invigorating with a refreshing aroma that perked up my tired soul. The sweetness complemented the fruity sourness and its richness surpassed tea-bags that some restaurants love to use for their beverage.

Best of all, you can refill and the waitress would even come forth and ask if you need a refill. Contrast this to the tea we had at Dutch Baby Cafe where refill was absolutely disallowed. I do feel that as a mature adult, i can bloody gauge for myself that a tasteless cup of a tea is a result of too much refill.

Deep Fried Pumpkin and Lotus Roots with Salted Egg (咸蛋奶油金瓜莲藕) - with salted egg sauce being the recent food fad, it just seemed right for us to give this a try.

Thick salted egg sauce encapsulated the crispy batter and this was already a satisfaction before we even dig in! The natural earthly flavour of lotus roots had strangely overpowered the salted egg taste and i didn't get as much enjoyment as i thought i should; good but not as nice as lotus roots chips generously sprinkled with salted egg yolk powder.

Pumpkin was way better with bursts of soft, almost liquefied pumpkin meat that complemented perfectly with the sauce; resulting in a flavour that wasn't overly sweet yet palatable.

Dried Scallop Sliced Fish with Fish Roe Porridge (干贝鱼片鱼子粥) - among all meat, fish counts as my mom's favourite and this was for her.

Cooked in a way similar to Cantonese-style congee, i think it's ingenious to add fish roe to porridge as they provided mini explosions of flavour to the smooth consistency of the porridge. My issue was on the blandness of the porridge after removing fish roe from the picture.

Dried Scallop Porridge with Century Egg and Minced Meat (干贝皮蛋肉碎粥) - same type of porridge as the sliced fish with fish roe with different ingredients.

Compared to sliced fish with fish roe, this was better flavoured, thanks to the century egg. Blame it on my taste buds as they couldn't grasp even a mild whiff of the dried scallops! Personally, this was also quite normal as it can be commonly found in hawker centres at a price of about S$3.50 (with an egg).

Spinach with Assorted Eggs (三蛋苋菜) - Saltiness of salted egg yolk, addictive pungency and taste of century egg and unmistakable flavour of plain eggs; mixed them up in a wok and work up the wok hei!

Result - a great plate of spinach with assorted eggs that in my opinion was very hard to find. Many places either have a too watery version or one that didn't bring out the uniqueness of each type of egg; some were too salty, others could do by just putting in century eggs.

Remember the bland porridge i mentioned earlier? Add in the porridge for that extra oomph as it totally enhanced the flavour!

3 Days 2 Nights Itinerary to Penang [Malaysia] 2016 - Verdict: I Wish I Could Stay Longer!

Close to 19 gigabytes worth of photographs and i am finally done with tidying them up for publishing in this blog! Penang Island is no stranger to me as i have visited it no less than three times although the last one was a long twenty years ago!

Appended below shall be the much awaited itinerary for the short three days, two nights visit to Pulau Pinang; history students should be aware Penang used to be part of the Straits Settlement from 1826 to 1946 that included Singapore and Malacca

- reminder - do click the links (once they are up) to read the details on the respective days and at time, the individual attractions or food that i had. :)

Day One (29 July 2016)
[9.03 am] Arrival at Terminal 1 of Changi International Airport well ahead of time as our flight was scheduled at 11.25am. Waited for Alex's colleagues and their families to arrive (meet up was at 9.30am) and by the time we were done with the check in and luggage drop, it's about an hour later.

[10.03 am]  Proceeded to the airport's staff canteen for breakfast; aside from cheaper pricing, the local variety is much more extensive in this air-conditioned canteen compared to the dining establishments housed within the departure area.

[11.43 am] Seated comfortably in the AirAsia plane as we were randomly assigned to "hot seats" with extra leg room! This was the first time i had the air steward demonstrating the evacuation procedure so close to me! Thanks to the handsome Azmi for allowing me to take his picture!

[11.48 am] The aeroplane shot off the runway after a slight delay and i am so loving the clear view from the sky of the upcoming new terminals for Changi Airport; from the look of it, it's more than twice the current size.

A good omen came in the form of beautiful clouds that fleeted by as i peered at them wistfully from the small window. Guess i wouldn't see much rain and i am glad i brought along a few sleeveless tees!

[12.42 am] Less than an hour later, we landed on the tarmac of Penang International Airport! Those interested to get the data plan for the phone can do so at the three counters (Digi, Hotlink, Tune Talk) BEFORE getting your passports chopped.

[1.34 pm] After collecting our luggage, we made a beeline for the airport's official taxi counter as we had about twenty persons in our group and it made better sense to hire 10-seater van instead. Our journey to Georgetown was at a standard RM 89.40 for the van.

[2.08 pm] Hotel for the next two nights; Bayview Hotel Georgetown which was famed for its Three Sixty° Revolving Restaurant and Sky Bar! A review would be posted soon!

[3.47 pm] Checked in, dumped our luggage, took a bath, check out the gym and pool and we finally hit the streets almost two hours later.

[3.57 pm] Alex and i split from the group and with the trusty map i had in my hand, i was gunning to try the signature dishes of Penang; char kway teow and chendol and got my fix at this famous stall along Lebuh Keng Kwee. p.s. Lebuh means street or avenue in Malay.

[5.12 pm] Komtar Tower - Penang's tallest building that was already built and operational when i visited twenty one years ago! We rejoined the group as some were interested in the next attraction in my itinerary.

[5.47 pm] Ghost Museum at RM 28 per adult! As expected, the ladies in the group shunned away from the museum but i can tell you, the guys who went totally enjoyed it.

[6.40 pm] The ladies were chilling out at this quaint cafe called Sekeping Pinang opposite the Ghost Museum. I shouldn't say chilling out as the place was rather warm!

[7.07 pm] At this time, it was still relatively bright and we continued our way along Lebuh Carnarvon without an aim as the lighting condition may not be conducive for photo-taking of the popular wall murals nearby.

Random street art (铁塑漫画) dotted the walk and i must say the state has done a fantastic job for tourists and despite the hot weather; i am likely to return to the island in the near future.

Elaborately-styled Chinese temple at the crossroad of Lebuh Cannon and Lebuh Armenian (where most of the wall murals were located) even though it was in reality pretty small in size.

[8.04 pm] Someone recalled seeing a hawker centre near the Esplanade on one of the many brochures we grabbed from the rack at the airport and thank god we found it! I wasn't too hungry and only bought a plate of Penang fruit rojak to share with my companions.

[9.50 pm] Hunger kicked in and i dragged Alex out to Red Garden Cafe which was only about a two-minute walk from Bayview Hotel. This non-air-conditioned food court (nope, not a cafe in my opinion) came strongly recommended by Ms Pearly Ang for its pipa duck rice.

[10.15 pm] For a person who doesn't hold his liquor well, i am surprised i agreed to join the rest at the sky bar of the hotel! By the time we got back to our hotel room (thankfully, still sober), it was about midnight.

Day Two (30 July 2016)
[7.00 am] Woke up to this mesmerizing view of Georgetown basked in the early sunlight with the iconic Komtar tower right in front of us.

[7.45 am] Breakfast was taken and a walk would be required for ease of digestion. Doing my research of the hotel's surrounding before the trip, i noted there was an old Protestant cemetery that's about 200 meters away. I had to visit it.

[9.40 am] Through the hotel's travel counter, we rented a van for 4 hours to bring us to two notable attractions in Penang; both of which i had been to in ALL my past visits to Penang. First one - taking the tram up Penang Hill!

In addition to the lower temperature at the top of Penang hill, the view itself was worth the ticket price and the tram queue we had to endure. At this vantage point, you can also spot the 13.5-kilometer Penang Bridge and the newer 24-kilometer Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge (commonly known as Penang Second Bridge) on a clear day.

[12.13 pm] Very bad traffic from Penang Hill to our next destination which was honestly close by and by that time, the whole lot of us were famished! I was starving and had to make do with a plate of Penang char kway teow and the soup based Hokkien prawn noodles.

Okay, i lied. I ordered a packet of muah chee from a mobile street vendor. Turned out it was really good; impressing even my fellow group mates. I always believe in sharing by the way.

[12.44 pm] Second destination - Kek Lok Si (Temple of Supreme Bliss / 极乐寺). Burning your calories would a definite and climbing the temple after your meal would be advisable.

[2.33 pm] We spent a lot of time at the temple (including the gigantic Guan Yin statue) and even had to fork out extra money to extend the van's rental. Anyway, the driver sent us back to Bayview Hotel as many of us had our shirts soaked with sweat!

[4.00 pm] Left the hotel in seek of the wall murals! In case you are unaware, Penangites generally speak Hokkien even though most Malaysian Chinese in other states were more comfortable with Cantonese.

[4.51 pm] Ice ball drenched in colourful sweet syrup from a stall along Lebuh Armenian - it's an absolute thirst quencher in that scorching hot weather!

[5.23 pm] If Lebuh Armenian is in your itinerary, you might as well pay a visit to one of the most famous clan jetties in Penang; Chew Jetty (姓周桥). What's a clan jetty? It's similar to a village with a high concentration of a specific Chinese surname but on water.

[6.07 pm] Penang actually has a few durian plantations and i made a mental note to have durians! And we did satisfy ourselves at this blog-recommended shop near Komtar where a Mao Shan Wang (MSW) was priced at RM 48 a kilogram! Do keep in mind that at that time, Singapore's MSW was more than S$30 a kilogram.

[7.15 pm] As it's our last night at Penang, i had to finalize my purchase of foodstuffs for friends and family back home! I think i bought the most in my group!

[7.46 pm] Makan time and at Red Garden Cafe again where i had a serving of nice char siew! The worse had to be the pork satay that had minimal fat, not sweet, not favourful and came with a horrid dip that's not our usual peanut curry sauce.

[10.05 pm] Rested for a while before popping out of the hotel to Lebuh Kimberly as i heard from Dr Oh that there's a local dessert i should try; 四果汤 which i realised eventually was like our Singapore cheng tng!

Day Three (31 July 2016)
[7.30 am] Breakfast at Bayview Hotel; we didn't sleep in as i needed to get to a place and time was a luxury given that our flight was at noon and we had to leave at 9.30am.

This was my objective - egg tarts from Ming Xiang Tai. They had numerous branches and the nearest to us was a 10-minute walk, next to the famous Chendol stall. The staff were extremely friendly, especially the managers; Joshua Kee and Melvyn Lim!

[9.14 am] Took a last shower at the hotel and had to bid farewell to the great view outside! Turned out i should have stayed longer in the room as the transport we arranged for was late! My bet is that the drivers have forgotten about the arrangement. Nevertheless, Alex felt that they would be super late and arranged with the hotel's travel counter for airport transfer; turned out it was cheaper than the one we pre-arranged!

[10.19 am] Reached Penang International Airport - we waited a long time to check in our luggage and sadly, i couldn't quite explore the airport given the limited time and could only thank my lucky stairs that i had bought enough.

[12.00 pm] Departed on time and i was once again given the hot seats! Maybe i shouldn't purchase the seat next time on the budget airline portal; not an issue to me to break away from the group since i always spend time on the plane watching my videos. Oh, i do need a window seat though.

[1.05 pm] Landed at our beloved Changi International Airport.

And who came to pick us up? My sister, brother in law and of course, the two young monkeys in the family! By the way, i don't have that strong influence on Jovyn's exaggerated expression. Her mom is the veteran at that!

Renovation Part 4 - Moving In & My Review of RenoGuyz

Five months have passed since part 3 of the house renovation and now that i have stayed in the flat (and hosted quite a few gatherings) for a few months, i think it's about time for me to give an update coupled with the review of the contractor, RenoGuyz at the end!

Things should have been easier after the renovation but you are so wrong; the homeowner gets really busy after the renovation when the furniture comes in and you are on high gear for the move to make the place your home!

In my case, i got most of my furniture from taobao.com; while a courier company helped with the import and transport to my house, i had to assemble myself. Honestly, i was looking forward to the satisfaction of seeing the finished products i put together. I think it's a man thing.

There were a few big ticket items i got from taobao.com; an expandable dining table, a sofa bed, a television console and a study table.

Most were neatly packed by the manufacturers as i had contacted them individually to add in additional brackets / protection as the product(s) was for export to Singapore. There was the rare exception as the above shows.

If you enjoy assembling IKEA products with their given bolts and nuts, then buying from taobao might be for you. However, instructions are mainly in Chinese and even then, they are not as comprehensive as IKEA and that could be frustrating!

Take for example the TV console; there were two big blocks with a manual on how to fix them together and then, twenty over smaller pieces of wood with literally no information on how to put them together. I figured them out only after close to two hours!

TV Console - i found a similar set about 30 centimeters shorter in length in Singapore and it cost about S$700; i got this for less than S$400. Note the hole where a drawer should be; the face had fallen off. Key takeover - redress would be difficult as you couldn't get the manufacturer to come to Singapore just to fix it.

Expandable Dining Table - my most satisfactory big ticket item; don't be too quick to discount it as this can stretch till 2 meters and it has been most helpful whenever friends visit my house!

Study Table - I almost pulled out my hair assembling this as the quality was quite bad, instructions were unclear and i totally hated the colour as it was purplish white and i have asked for bright white.

Sofa Bed - this was the easiest as it came fully assembled except for the steel legs. If you prefer to have this convenience, look out for the Chinese characters ""整装". The one which requires assembling will indicated "组装".

Living near my parents means that the move to the new place doesn't require any professional movers! Having numerous pieces of luggage at home would benefit you as that's how i transport most of the items; from clothes, piggy banks, bottles of vodka to even my computer! Multiple trips are required though.

As of Chinese customs, a simple ritual is required to cleanse the new house before moving in and there's no one better than my superstitious mom to conduct it.

The one action that most Chinese would recall - roll the pineapple into the house so that the household can prosper! Sadly, my unit number had yet to strike the lottery.

Mom continuing with her ritual while her son stood stupidly at one corner, not knowing what else he can help with besides taking photographs of the mom. My only duty was to check the Chinese almanac beforehand to ensure that the day was favourable for house moving.

Don't ask me what has become of the pineapple - i believe my dad had slaughtered it to indulge on its sourish, sweet flesh since i don't have an altar in my new house.

Items bought and brought for the ritual - mine was really simplified as i noted there were others involving feng shui master, certain products that had to face the main door etc.

Cleaning continued after the ritual as the newly renovated house continued to be rather dusty and i absolutely couldn't stand the stinging smell of laminate glue used for carpentry! Thank god i had already purchased the Haier Robot Floor Cleaner!

I admit i salivate a lot when i sleep and it can be embarrassing whenever i sun my bolster outside the house. Hence, it's a need to get this waterproof bolster cover!

Two factors would determine if the house is ready; one, you can sleep in the house and secondly, you start to cook! I love my built in oven even though it was of a lower range.

First attempt of making something from scratch was a disaster though; the healthiest muffin (as claimed) was terrible-tasting and i was left with eleven pieces. Such a waste!

The washing machine area - as the block i lived in is more than 30 years old, the rubbish chute is located inside the flat. I enjoy the convenience of throwing rubbish even when i am half naked even though some friends dislike it due to a higher chance of encountering the roaches.

My quaint little black and white themed kitchen - it wasn't as big as the one in my parents' place and i regretted not extending the island space as i already found the area to be quite cramped when i do my cooking. Friends living in new flats / condominiums were however super envious as the space was just right for them!

Living room - it's only been a few months but i am already thinking of new ideas for the house; a new set of blinds that should be much better looking than the curtains i currently have and maybe a new built in cabinet for the two dozen vodka bottles that are still in my parents' place!

Well, to be continued i guess!

Review of RenoGuyz
Since i embarked on the blogging for my flat renovation, i have received comments and numerous emails asking me for the review of my contractor and i thought it's appropriate to come out with this piece a few months after moving in as after-completion service is still as important.

Although i originally liaised with the boss, Nicholas, the main coordinator i worked with was actually Brayden. Now, Nic is famous in the renotalk forum for being a straight talker and that's something i value. Brayden is more diplomatic yet he wouldn't hesitate to give his two points when he feels that something is wrong; however, he can be a bit blur.

Unlike horror stories told to me by friends who had gone through house renovations, mine was relatively mild and even when there were issues, they were quickly resolved. My major grouch was with doors; toilet doors and master bedroom door were of wrong colours compared to the catalogues! Fault was on their subcontractors (door manufacturers etc) and i can only say thank god the colours are still acceptable.

The door problem continued with my main gate which totally riled me up as the colour, brownish red, was totally unacceptable. My concept had always been black and white; hence, why would i choose a rusty looking red colour!? Eventually, they got the subcontractor to replace the gate even though i wasn't informed that it was to be re-sprayed, which means my house would be without a gate for a night and by that time, i had already moved in.

Both Nic and Brayden were apologetic over the incidents and i can see they were trying their best to address the issues rather than coming out with dozens of excuses to save their asses. I don't expect perfection and from friends' reviews so far on their renovation journey, there's bound to be a few frustrating incidents.

I held back my last payment as there were a few unresolved items involving paintwork and gaps in between tiles as i am also worried RenoGuyz would ignore me once i make full payment! Actually my fear is unfounded as they continue to entertain my questions, even today!

Cost of Renovation: S$36,000
(includes plumbing work and electrical).

It never fails to solicit quotations from various sources and for discussion on your upcoming renovation, you may call Nicholas at 9690-7887 or Brayden at 8668-0899.

Seng Bee Steamed (White) Chicken Rice 成美食雞飯 @ Ang Mo Kio Central 724 Hawker Centre [Singapore]

Even though the current hype is on the recently-released Pokemon Go, i just couldn't be bothered with the game and opted to go out only because i needed fresh air outside of Yishun!

Within 30 minutes, i found myself at this hawker centre in Ang Mo Kio central; i couldn't even remember when my last visit was and thought it was quite a few years back when the Gang of Four patronised a supposedly famous yong tau foo stall.

Alex remembered the lemon chicken rice was great at Seng Bee (yong tau foo was closed) and i decided to make things easier by ordering the steamed chicken rice. Pity that his lemon chicken was already sold out.

I was wondering why there was so much rice on the plate and questioned Alex as i am on a carbo-restricted diet; it's already a sin to indulge in chicken rice and i seriously don't need more rice! Turned out he was charged S$3.50 instead of S$3.00.

Whatever the case, the rice was soaked in garlic and chicken stock goodness that was utterly sinful (but so delicious) and in my opinion, there was just too much rice. Chicken meat was smooth, oily, succulent and could have been enjoyed better if it was de-boned and de-chicken-fat; latter was weird for a person who loves fatty food as i simply couldn't stand the sight of steamed chicken skin!

=====

Shall insist on the S$3.00 portion the next time i visit. Oh, another item could also be added to level the competition with the chicken rice stall in Yishun; achar!

Bayview Hotel (Georgetown) 城市海湾酒店 - The One with a 360 Revolving Rooftop Restaurant @ Penang Island [Malaysia]

With the summarised itinerary cleared, it's usual for me to touch on the accommodation next and for the recent Penang trip, we stayed two nights at Bayview Hotel in the capital of Penang; Georgetown!

For such a nice looking hotel, it's shocking to find the main signage / logo to be so outdated; the design would likely be the norm more than twenty years ago.

Hotel lobby where Alex and his boss checked in for our group - did i mention that i was joining Alex and his colleagues for their company's get-together? Oh well, not that it's strange since i know the boss much longer than Alex and this was my third trip with them!

Drinks for hotel guests that were ready for self-dispensing right at the hotel lobby; a nice gesture as weather in Penang is renowned to be hot (some said worse than Singapore) and your throat will welcome the orange / cucumber infused iced water.

Room
1437 - the 37th room on the 14th floor. Included with our keycards were the breakfast vouchers and our WiFi password that's valid for two days and allowed login to two different devices.

The kind of hotel corridor that gives me the chills. Thankfully, our room was the first one once we exited from the elevator and that kind of assured me. In case you are wondering, i didn't encounter anything paranormal in the hotel.

Interior of 1437 - quite small (when compared to the Park Plaza Hotel Bangkok) but the essentials (to me, those refer to the bed and air conditioning) were present. I love the pillows as they were plush and comfortable to the neck.

Flat screen television, mini bar fridge, electric kettle and most importantly, the two complimentary bottles of mineral water.

Inside the closet - a safe, an ironing board and an iron in one of the drawers. I have a tendency to look into the wardrobe as there's one item i would grab. The laundry bag which shall be used to house my dirty laundry until i am back in Singapore.

Aside from the retro-looking telephone, i am glad i took the time to read the notice. Seems like many hotels are going the eco-friendly way; to change your towels, you have to leave them in the bathtub! Yes, i made it a point to replace for a clean towel every day when i am overseas. Sorry for being eco-unfriendly.

View from the hotel room.

It's amazing, isn't it?! From my room, i can see Komtar, the tallest building in Penang and also the old streets of Georgetown which were listed as collectively as a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO!

Look further and there's the 13.5-kilometer Penang bridge; one of two vehicular carriageways connecting Peninsular Malaysia to Pulau Pinang.

Noted a park next to the hotel although i wouldn't be caught sitting there any time. I might as well chill in the hotel at night and in the daytime, i presume it would be hot and why would i want to waste my time sitting in a tiny, normal-looking park when i am overseas?!

Bathroom - the kind common in a dated hotel even though i read from the website that the rooms were newly renovated. Maybe the room they have in mind didn't include the bathroom.

Hair dryer - didn't use it as i prefer to towel dry my hair or let it run through its natural drying process. Mum would love it, as i have always said.

There's a bathtub! Again, we didn't use it at all as there wasn't sufficient time to soak in. Furthermore, i would very much like a rainfall shower!

Another sign of staying in a hotel that stopped its time a few decades ago - who uses this kind of slippers for bathroom!? Wait, i am not complaining since i don't use bathroom slippers.

Located at the lift landing on the 14th floor, this corner offered the same impressive panoramic view of Georgetown!

Noticing that the room across from ours was undergoing housekeeping; we asked if we could step in to check out the view and darn was it soothing! I can so imagine a beach nearby where i can frolic in the water!

Breakfast
For a person who dislikes having hotel breakfast, i must say the variety was wide and food generally tasted better than other similarly-starred hotels. I enjoyed their soft and fluffy banana cake and nasi lemak!

Amenities
Gymnasium - opened from 6am till 9pm daily, access would only be granted using the keycard you are holding for your hotel room.

Rather comprehensive equipment even though there were two reasons i didn't make use of it; one, i didn't have time and secondly, even if i can pull out some time, i am usually too full to exercise.

View of the swimming pool from the gym.

Swimming Pool - operational from 7.30am till 7.30pm, i only dropped by to take pictures for the purpose of this post. Nope, we didn't take a dip as again, no time. I might have done it if this trip were similar to the relaxing one i made to Bangkok in April!

Do keep in mind that the deep end of the pool was 3.5 meters; hence, please be mindful if you have young kids with you. In addition, there's also the Jacuzzi pool.

If you are looking for a tan, do drop by only in the afternoon as the swimming pool was surrounded on three sides and our dear mr sun can only peek in from the west.

Convenience store where you can buy travel sized shampoo, shower, toothpaste, non-prescriptive drugs (panadol) and even souvenirs. Right next to it was a Japanese restaurant.

Tailor shop - i am hesitant when it comes to tailor shops, especially in hotels since the clothes are not likely to come cheap and there are just too many horror stories of tailors who didn't do a good job.

I am unsure on the pricing but the reviews of the tailor shop seemed to be quite good. Don't trust my words and pictures on this; check with our knowledgeable mr google. I believe he has better answers for you.

Three Sixty° Revolving Restaurant and Sky Bar - yes, we did go up on the first night to meet up with a few colleagues of Alex and had a great time chit chatting!

We mainly stayed in the sky bar area and only went to the restaurant when the disco lights got too glaring for our eyes. According to the notice i saw at the lift landing, the restaurant would only revolve from 7pm till 10pm.

Travel Counter - situated in the lobby, you can either book the packages as listed above or book a van / car (as we did). Arrangements for airport transfer can also be made from the same counter.

Do refer to the above on the location (floor) of the amenities in the hotel.

=====

Verdict
Personally, i don't have a major grouch with the hotel even though some design / items are seriously outdated (i can live with those). Service wasn't particularly good or bad; just normal and i thought the key selling point was really on the view you can get from the hotel room.

Don't be too shy to ask for a map showing nearby attractions or famous food to try. Most hotels actually have such a map and some don't necessarily publicize it which is kind of strange to me.

Grasshopper in the Office @ Singapore

$
0

The place i work in is always full of excitement and it doesn't help that creepy crawlies seem to relish in making our office their refuge; from gecko, caterpillar, fly and skink, we recently added another species to the list.

A species that hop; not a kangaroo but a grasshopper! Now, this is in fact a baby as there were humongous palm-sized ones in one of the rooftop gardens and it's likely this one just got lost and needed help.

And who else can provide assistance? Of course the one person in the office who was confirmed to be a natural attraction for insects / reptiles. Me. As suspected by the rest, it didn't take me long to cup it in between my palms even though the tiny fellow was super nimble!

Darn; with the above photograph showing grassy (my nickname for it) agreeable to stand still and allow me to take a close-up picture, i think it's a double confirmation and i am expecting more insects / reptile to come into the office in the near future.

Whatever the case, i am praying the next one wouldn't be a snake.

Teppei Japanese Restaurant - Rumoured to be the Cheapest Omakase in Singapore @ Orchid Hotel [Singapore]

$
0
0
Despite the rumours, i know for certain Teppei Japanese restaurant at Tanjong Pagar isn't the cheapest for omakase in Singapore as another establishment had a deal that's less than S$30 before service charge and government tax.

To be fair, the number of dishes were reduced in that "cheaper restaurant even though it didn't go against the basic definition of omakase; namely, "(in a Japanese restaurant) a type of meal consisting of dishes selected by the chef.".

A few words of advice for those who have the intention to patronise the popular Teppei for their omakase - first of which is that you will be assigned bar counter seating and if you are looking for a romantic, quiet place; Teppei is not the place for you.

Secondly, there is zilch customer service as staff members will treat you like their family. To put things in context, i don't think you expect customer service from your mom who cooked for you at home. And like your siblings, they will not hesitate to make fun of you when the occasion arises.

The omakase (only for dinner) was priced at S$80 per person and with this amount (highest i ever paid for meals unless you count wedding dinners), your hot / iced Japanese tea came complimentary together with the wet tissue.

Let's now begin with the spread! I don't remember the names of the dishes and pictures shall therefore do most of the talking. Enjoy!

Appetisers (six in one) - not extraordinary and definitely didn't give me the punch i expected from n S$80 dinner but let's not be too quick to discount Teppei.

Live crabs in a plastic box - as omakase involves serving whatever fresh ingredients that are available for the chef's preparation, i am assuming then that the minuscule crabs would be in my tummy soon.

Sitting at the counter had its advantages - you shall be kept aware of what's next on the menu and with your eyes glued on the cooks, it's hard for them to fumble on hygiene.

Four kinds of sushi - the otoro (tuna belly) was almost melt-in-your-mouth kind and i seriously wanted to steal the piece from my neighbour's plate!

Chawanmushi - with a tinge of yuzu coupled with a strong seafood flavour; this is one chawanmushi Alex wouldn't hesitate to order a second helping and pay extra for it.

This has a sexual connotation; it wasn't obvious until the server passed it to you. The men would get a longer version than the ladies because the men have something the women don't have. Go figure.

Insides for your reference; a rolled up seaweed with rice, fish roes, meat and some crispy stuff. I found this a bit salty but a friend liked it a lot!

Green chilli with something savoury on it - it wasn't spicy at all and the topping kind of made the chilli rather nice to eat, and yes, this would be counted as one item.

The master cook, Chef Yamashita Teppei, hard at work. Don't be deceived by his seriousness; as the saying goes, still water runs deep.

An ikan bilis; this was what we were informed. However, i couldn't help noticing this looked familiar! Darn, it did bear a resemblance to grassy whom i just released earlier that day! Taste wise, almost like ikan bilis.

Sushi on a spoon - this is a common display in Teppei although you will not be holding the spoon yourself. Be prepared to be fed.

One of the cooks / servers will bring the spoon to right in front of you and feed you, literally. Just keep in mind that they may not be so willing to spoon-feed you immediately and may move back while you are about to close your mouth. For those who are watching, it's actually hilarious!

Scallop, tuna belly, truffle flake and sea urchin - the explosion of taste as the ingredients swirled around my taste buds! Amazing!

Flatfish with miso - how could flatfish taste so good?! So Family Outing wasn't kidding the viewers whenever the cast members appeared extremely excited when flatfish was one of the ingredients.

River crabs - now it's my turn to be teased. I was given just the claw while my friends had the full crab! It was already so small but gamely chewed it up, albeit in a much slower speed.

The server wasn't so bad after all; he passed me another one once he completed the round of distribution to the rest.

Sorry for the blurry picture; this was cinnamon ice cream with goose liver. Salty at first; the aftertaste was in fact palatable. A pity i gobbled it a bit too fast!

Deep fried Yellowtail with eggplant stuffed with prawn paste. The fish was similar to our normal saba fish and thought this was good yet not impressionable.

In celebration of Singapore's 51st birthday the next day, the server purposely came up with this display made of strips of Kagoshima beef! Do be careful of this cheeky guy; he was full of tricks and sometimes, we even wondered if the things he said was true. The ikan bilis came from him.

This was the aftermath; before then, it was full of popcorn-like kernels that you can pluck off and eat. Fresh and buttery, i guess i still prefer my sweet / caramel popcorn.

Bloody! Why did i get the top of this Japanese tomato?!

Again a tease by the same cheeky guy, he kindly passed me a "normal" one afterwards. Cold, sour yet enveloped by a layer of sweetness.

Kagoshima beef - i could have plates and plates of them; they were so juicy and full of flavour! I am feeling hungry now just recollecting how yummy they were as i slowly savoured them on Monday.

Japanese pumpkin soup - didn't seem to have a trace of pumpkin in the clear broth. Flavour was tasty and don't think this is your typical miso soup as it would be very far off. Strangely, there was a seafood sweetness to it.

A regular customer treated the crew to a round of Japanese beer! I have never dined in such an environment that's so full of vibe, energy and also allowed drinking on the job!

Snow melon - sweet as promised and yes, only one teeny weeny piece for everyone. If you like, you can request for an extra piece.

Piece of mango - not sour.

Another chef was preparing the main course - there were options to choose from and i neglected to take the picture for your benefit. My apology. There was rice dishes like uni fried rice, garlic fried rice.

Most of us (four out of five) opted for the 4 kinds of sushi as it came strongly recommended by one who had been to Teppei Japanese restaurant twice! So lucky right as reservations can be hard to secure!

The sea urchin fried rice - the order by the odd one out! Haha. He shared with his wife and both appeared to be enjoying it.

Our 4 kinds of sushi - i didn't regret my choice and the uni was so creamy! I thought the second from the right (my favourite) was beef but looking at the picture now, i think it's aburi fish. Whatever the case, i am not complaining except for the portion!

Lights switched off and followed by the singing of the birthday song! Add in the flashing neon spectacles and a candle on a bowl of fried rice and you can imagine how terribly festive the atmosphere was!

Chef Yamashita Teppei with his signature pose! Do feel free to request for pictures with him as he will gladly accede to your request. Our group took one although i wouldn't be publishing them one as my face was too bloated; no doubt the result of a satisfying and enjoyable meal.

Ice cream - the meal rightfully concluded with a scoop of ice cream. There were again different flavours and i chose the more unique yuzu which was zesty and nice.

Would i be back? I will after i nurse back the emptiness in my wallet. By the way, the birthday boy was also treated to a bowl of special ice cream meticulously carved to the image of a snowman; content was full-fledged wasabi.

Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul (Chendol) @ Keng Kwee Street [Penang, Malaysia]

$

Penang is renowned as a food paradise in Malaysia and i bet many of you have heard of Penang char kway teow; however, char kway teow is just one of many good-eats on the island state! Today, my focus is on chendol and this particular street stall was said to be the most popular, judging from the queue it attracts.

The stall name might appear kitsch but in that area, everyone is aware of its fame although for future expansion, this kind of name would be hard to patent and some competitors have already started using similar sounding names to draw in confused tourists.

Just look out for the queue and if you prefer actual location, the street vendor is located along Lebuh Keng Kwee, right next to Joo Hooi Cafe. Don't fret about the long queue; the service was fast unless you suay-suay encounter an asshole ordering 20 at one go!

My bowl of chendol, named and pronounced as chendul in Penang, that cost RM 2.70 (approximately S$0.90). Noted visual differences from our Singapore version; watery without the generously piled up crushed ice and why was there hardly any gula melaka!?

One sip of the chilled coconut milk and you would forgive the lack of palm sugar as it was so thirst quenching! The green jelly strands were not as nice as the cendol at Changi Village although i was pleased with the generous serving of red kidney beans which added a layer of addictive texture as i gulped down the dessert!

In my haste to soothe my throat in that hot weather, i forgot to stir and watched in horror when i am halfway through the bowl as the gula melaka was hidden right at the bottom!

You may eat and even order the chendul in Joo Hooi Cafe; as i am not sure if the cendol stall was part of the cafe, i actually order some dishes within the cafe as well.

At a competitor right opposite, we spotted the above poster marketing a chendol stall that's right here in Singapore! Well, you can give it a try if you are craving for Penang style cendol.

Joo Hooi Cafe - A Kopitiam Where You Can Have Penang Char Kway Teow, Fried Oyster & Chee Cheong Fun to Complement the Famous Chendol Next Door @ Penang [Malaysia]

Yesterday, i blogged on a famous teochew chendul in Penang and shared within the post that you can be seated in the coffeeshop behind the street stall; we did as per aforementioned although the uncertainty of whether we would be chased out resulted in us ordering more food from within the cafe as well.

First thing you do right after you get a table; grab the guys wearing the green tees (as shown above) and let him know the bowls of chendul you want! No queue is required; how nice!

The coffeeshop looked like it could do with a major overhaul although it continued to exude an old-school charm like many other shophouses in Penang.

First stall i ordered from; Penang Road Famous Chao Kuey Teow (檳榔路仁哥炒粿条). Possibly the most famous food in Penang, i am aware of its differences from the sweet and dark version we have in Singapore.

There's another difference; the use of duck eggs in the frying of the noodles! The price for chao kway teow with duck egg was the highest at RM 6.50 but my heart was set on it!

Wait for the noodles was more than 20 minutes!

Lightly coloured unlike its Singapore cousin, this plate of Penang char kway teow was rather bland in flavour in the beginning. The taste got richer as i dug in further even though i attributed it to the use duck egg.

Second stall; Famous Kah Kah Fried Oyster (嘉嘉蠔煎).

Clumpy, gooey with no crispy element and on the saltier side, this plate clearly didn't impress! I could only thank myself for opting the small portion as i am a huge fan of fried oyster!

To be fair, the oysters were cooked well and there wasn't a trace of that yucky taste. Yes, i belong to the weird group that would order fried oyster yet hope we would be given more eggs, less oyster.

Last stall; Penang Road Famous Ah Chia Ko (檳榔路驰名阿正哥). See how the word famous was blatantly used in all three stalls!

Ah Chia Ko offered the above items and i narrowed down my selection to either chee cheong fun or popiah. On second thought, Alex loves chee cheong fun; hence, i stood a higher chance of him helping me share the calories.

Smooth chee cheong fun topped with aromatic sesame seeds and fried shallots, this was extremely addictive. The only issue was the sauce which was cloyingly sweet and you may want to taking a sparing amount to prevent sweetness overdose!

The Amazon River Quest - The Hype Has Died Down @ River Safari [Singapore]

Over the school vacation in June, my sister and i brought the two monkeys out to River Safari; a promise i made to them eons ago that i can finally fulfill.

As i had already came out with an almost-comprehensive post on River Safari, i don't see the point of regurgitating when most things in the attraction remained unchanged; save for the fact that the river safari cruise now comes free with your admission!

The word "almost" was due to the fact that i didn't manage to take the Amazon River Quest the last time as it was under maintenance! Given that the queue was surprisingly short at only five minutes; i took it upon myself to pay for the tickets of S$5 an adult and S$3 a child for the four of us.

Almost forgot - one must be above 1.06 meters tall to take the ride and i needed to measure the baby in our family. I know she's heavy but i honestly didn't know her height; she cleared the height restriction, thankfully.

Another likely dampener to the ride - weather and it wasn't assuring to note that there were black clouds looming in the sky above us.

Taking a long walk to the actual location where we can take the ride; even though i purposely planned for a weekday, i didn't expect the visitor number on a Friday to be so low.

It's called the River Quest for a reason; the original explorer's intention was to search for gold and cinnamon. For layman like us, our objective was just to catch sightings of the elusive creatures found along this 480-meter long tributary.

Basic information on the Amazon Basin - largest freshwater reservoir on Earth. Additional information i found on the web included the following; world's largest rainforest, covers 40% of the South American continent etc. To read more, click here

Interesting that the bull shark can also be found in the Amazon River and a pity that River Safari didn't keep one or two to pique our interest.

Over 200 tribes live at the Amazon Basin and there could be more that remains hidden as the basin is mind-blowing huge with dense forests that made exploration extremely challenging.

Five minutes' queue?! I think it's more a five minutes' walk as there's absolutely no one in the queue when we arrived and the staff members were just waiting for us.

The boat was for us only since there's no one immediately behind us. Excitedly, we had to sort out the seating arrangement as we couldn't let the kids be allocated a seat where there's no adult around.

Key information to remind the kids (and myself) again and again; remain seated at all times, keep my hands and legs within the boat and to supervise the kids. Honestly, i think i am the one who needs supervision. Haha.

Our journey begins.....

As the ride was a loop bringing us back eventually to the place where we embarked, the boat was given a lift to start on higher grounds and let gravity do the rest of the work.

The feeling i got was similar to that when i was taking the Jurassic Park Rapids Adventure at Universal Studios Singapore (USS) and that's not good as i remember there's high chance of water damage for my camera!

Drop came and goes and it hardly caused any big wave and splash. The brats were however excited over the sudden downward tilt!

Meandering along the man-made tributary that's quiet on both ends on the hot afternoon despite the appearance of black clouds likely to derail our boat ride.

What the heck is a collared peccary? If not for the silhouette of a pig-like mammal, i am going to guess it's a bird species.

They are adorable! In spite of my love for pork, i do feel envious of those in other countries who can keep pigs as pets. Having said that, the collared peccary is no longer classified as suidae (the pig family).

Brown tufted capuchin that was too fast for my shutter.

You need a keen eye to spot the animals along the trail; a trait i would love to have yet am not blessed with. In the spider monkey enclosure, i didn't catch any sighting at all!

Occasional shelter from the sunlight.

I must be blind as i didn't spot any maned wolves as well! Okay, the weather was warm and they could have found a reclusive spot to hide from the sun.

Guanaco - looking more like a deer than a camel. Taking photographs was a real frustration as the boat simply cannot stop for me to compose the picture!

Second "waterfall" - the brats were not awfully thrilled by the animals and were happier with the drops we encountered along the quest.

Didn't spot the Brazilian tapir although there's the plain rhea standing right by the riverbank.

Main reason why i showed the above; because my eyesight was too bad to catch the sight of the cotton top tamarin! I can understand why some online reviews about the amazon river quest are negative but to put things in perspective, you wouldn't be guaranteed to see anything if you are in the wild.

Another cave with a sign partially hidden by the bush; "watch out for the jaguars". Please be assured that this was a safe ride and the only danger faced, aside from lightning strike in event of bad weather, is to get yourself wet.

Nothing so far.

I am getting bored; it must be a bad day as i can count, with one hand, the number of species we chanced upon in the quest. In the eyes of an explorer, i am a failure!

This was when i spotted the beautiful creature.

With a coat so shiny and stunning, i can understand the allure it has for some people. Did you manage to spot the second jaguar right behind?

3rd drop!

One that resulted in shrieks and screams from the two monkey who were prepped to give their loudest; an action i frowned upon as we were in a zoo, not a theme park and i trust the animals would prefer to have their peace and quiet, where possible.

The above signage was placed at strategic locations throughout the ride and you would be blind not to spot it; i actually have a higher hit rate for the signs than the animals. If not for the discomfort of getting my feet wet, there's a risk i might venture out of the boat to take better pictures!

Flamingos on one side and capybara on the other. Those who read my post on Dusit Zoo in Bangkok would recollect the zen looking capybara.

World's largest rodents with an expression that's totally at peace.

Funny that this cave wasn't decorated to emulate the environment; it was just concrete walls with a CCTV to catch any visitors' misdeed.

Scarlet Ibis - fascinating that i managed to catch sightings of birds when they have the tendency to take flight much faster than a species without wings.

This bird appeared to be confused of its identity; hey you, you are not a flamingo!

Kissing iguanas - blurry picture thanks to the moving vessel and a lens that's not good enough. Okay, blame the photographer too for his lack of skill.

Coming to the end of our quest.

Throughout the ride, we felt that we were the only vessel given the absolute privilege of travelling along the "river" exclusively. Turned out there was a full boat right ahead of us!

"We are connected to the natural world. Caring for and protecting the natural world is the key to our survival" - words of wisdom that unfortunately don't sit in in many peoples' mind.

That's why the younger generation must be taught and educated from young to respect and care for the natural world; humans are the biggest destroyers but we can also be the strongest advocates.

Encik Tan Hainanese Curry Rice Chicken Cutlet Set - Halal Certified @ Bugis Plus [Singapore]

Jerald can be persistent when it comes to food and his craving a few weekends ago was the fast food giant; MacDonald's!

I remember a MacDonald's near where we were at bugis plus but alas, the fast food restaurant was no longer around and in its place was a local-themed air conditioned coffee shop with a rather kitsch yet easy-to-remember name; Encik Tan.

That brat insisted on having his way although his old uncle me wasn't at all keen to cross the road to Bugis Junction where there's another branch; I needed coffee and nothing's better than a cup of local kopi gao to perk up my morning!

Riding on the wave of small-scale coffeeshop concept with a few stalls focusing on basic local delights; toast and coffee, noodles, rice etc, i simply couldn't keep my eyes off the deep fried options like chicken cutlet, fried fish, fried prawns...

Ordered the Hainanese curry rice chicken cutlet set and couldn't understand why it is called a set when drink was chargeable at a top-up of S$1 and limited to only lime juice!

To be frank, i wasn't expecting much as Hainanese curry rice was famed for their pork cutlet, not chicken! However, Encik Tan was Halal-certified to cater to the significant Muslim population and the haram meat had to be replaced.

Taking a bite of the curry and cabbage, i was sold as the taste was authentically Hainanese style! I couldn't get enough of the curry that's intensely rich, thick and flavourful; add in the crunchy cabbage that's thoroughly cooked to an amazingly soft texture and i knew i would have no issue cleaning up the rice.

It seemed that the marination for pork cutlet was used for chicken as well and i personally liked the chicken version better; chicken meat was juicer than pork and there's that guaranteed layer of crunchy skin! Nothing's perfect though; the fried egg was overcooked and would definitely benefit from having a runny yolk.

As i suspected, the plate was literally licked clean.

Durian Indulgence at Tng Siang Hock Trading along Jalan Dr Lim Chwee Leong @ George Town, Penang [Malaysia]

Not many Singaporeans are aware that durian plantations exist on Pulau Pinang and indulging in the king of fruits is also a suggested activity when one visits the island!

Given our short stay in Penang, we were not keen to check out the plantations and hence, decided to check out a fruit shop that's recommended by a blog; Tng Siang Hock Trading which was pretty near the 1st Avenue Mall.

Those who have been reading the news would be aware that the durian season this year is actually late and the price of a Mao Shan Wang (cat mountain king) can hit as high as almost S$30 a kilogram a few weeks ago in July!

The shop was famous for its all-you-can-eat-durian buffet although this deal isn't applicable during low season, which was around the time we visited! I had somewhat expected that and purposely left out the information to prevent disappointment among my tour mates.

We went for the top species; Mao Shan Wang (MSW)! Priced at RM 48 a kilogram which worked out to be about S$16 a kilogram; it was still cheaper than the rate in Singapore then (as of 17 August 2016, you can get a MSW in the little red dot at a comparable rate).

Two MSW were carefully selected in consultation with a durian guru from our group and the total price, if i recall correctly, was about RM 200 for two huge durians!

Maybe because i have not had any durian for the past year, the craving was high and once the creamy sweet and bitter durian meat spread out in my mouth, my heart melted.

Texture was just right and the taste was delicious with a right balance of sweetness and bitterness that's signature of MSW. Due to age, i think sweet durian meat is no longer my cup of tea even though total bitterness is still a no no.

Flat seeds are always welcome as that translate into getting way more meat from the durians! Aside from taste that doesn't make the cut, the other thing about durians that frustrates me is getting seeds with a meat composition of less than 50%!

Washrooms with taps were available for you to wash your hands but in case you need to wipe your fingers in the midst of indulgence, serviettes are provided at no cost.

Durians at 606 Geylang Road - Not The Reputable One @ Singapore

In last year's durian season, i got wind of a reputable durian stall in Geylang that i can add to my existing list; currently consisting of Sindy Durians (Balestier), Sembawang Seng and Ah Seng (Ghim Moh).

There were two stalls very close to each other and i am at a fix on choosing the correct one. The other one that's right outside NTUC appeared to have much lesser people; hence, i am placing my bet with the above.

It's also heartening to see baskets and baskets of durian husks even though they might have been there for a long period of time or that the sellers were just removing the seeds and packaging them for customers who prefer to takeaway.

Prices of Mao Shan Wang (Cat Mountain King or MSW for short) and the slightly more premium King of The Kings! For a non durian connoisseur like me, i couldn't discern the subtle differences and will go with the MSW anytime.

The cheaper durian species which might not taste as bad as one thought they should be. There were occasions the MSW i got couldn't stand a chance against these cheaper species!

To be fair, i could have been cheated by the unscrupulous durian seller since i couldn't identify the actual species when there are over 200 in the market; for those who are interested, MSW is D197.

Our haul - 1 red prawn and 2 MSW. If i recollect correctly, the red prawn was S$10 each while both MSW cost S$50; with the calculation of S$15 a kilogram, the two MSW would weight about 3.33 kilograms.

Red Prawn - with their slightly (in my opinion, hardly noticeable) reddish meat, this was prized for those who enjoyed the absolute sweetness in their durians. In the past, this would count as my favourite species; however, i prefer something sweet yet bitter nowadays.

Strangely, it had a bitter aftertaste and although not as creamy as MSW, it was sufficient to satisfy my insatiable craving for durians.

MSW which was surprisingly rather small - don't be deceived by its diminutive size, this thorny fruit was packed with a lot of durian seeds!

Not as flat as the MSW durians we had at Penang.

One main reason why i don't like to buy durians in styrofoam boxes is that i love to unveil the little smelly gems that are encased in the protective thorny shell!

Our second MSW!

Alex was in a roll and decided to buy a third MSW despite the fact that we couldn't ingest anymore! It didn't help that our intention was to go for dinner after this! Sigh.... this asshole has the tendency to order too much every time he likes to eat something and this often comes at the expense of his friends who couldn't stand food that would otherwise be thrown away.

Commanding a higher price (S$30 due to its size), this was a disappointment as the texture of the durian meat was on the hard side and the taste veered towards bitterness. Maybe we had too much durians!

=====

I realised today that the reputable stall was actually the one near NTUC and i guess i would have to give it a miss until the craving strikes again! Nevertheless, i did notice that the one i patronised drew more customers.

Ghost Museum - A Unique Experience @ Penang Island [Malaysia]

$

0
Many travellers use tripadvisor as their first point of research whereas i have a different take by preferring google map where i can conveniently plan for activities within walking distance from the hotel i booked.

That's how i managed to spot an attraction that's of personal interest to me; the ghost museum in Penang. My curiosity was obviously piqued and it was classified under "must-do" on my pre-trip itinerary.

Disclaimer - for thrill seekers, this ghost museum would likely disappoint you as you don't get staff members masquerading as "hantu" for the sake of making you pee in your pants. Instead, the objective was "educational" with information on legendary ghosts / monsters / evil beings around the world.

Nevertheless, the acceptance of horror depends on individuals (for example, i am totally okay with bloody, gory scenes) and to absolve themselves from any responsibility, the operator had put up a "enter at your own risk" sigh with details.

Bought our tickets at RM 28 per adult; for Malaysians with Mycard, there's a discount and you only need to pay RM 18. I shall share the rate card at the end of this post.

Waiting for our turn to enter; to prevent a situation where there were too many persons crowding a specific section, visitors were allowed at staggered intervals.

Fake snake by the way. For real snakes, you may wish to check out the snake temple that's near to the Penang International Airport - as the name suggests, live snakes freely roam inside the religious abode.

Our turn now - I am going breaking this up into their respective category as there were 7 listed in the guide map; Malay, China, Egypt, Pirate, Dracula, Japan and Halloween.

Malay
Upon entering, i did notice something on the ceiling and for local Singaporean / Malaysian, i guess we all know what it is; the oil man. Orang Minyak (油鬼仔) is actually human and stories of them stealing from homes and raping young girls were common in Singapore before the 90s when some of us were still living in the village.

Explanation in English, Chinese and Malay can be found on the information plaque that's serviced by a small LED light to allow us the ease of reading in the dark environment. Do note that the English translation can be quite bad; just note the main points.

Potianak - another infamous entity in the Malaya peninsular that's the vengeful incarnation of a pregnant lady who died in labour. They were said to be beautiful and will seduce men at night.

The scene (in typical kampong environment) was actually very well decorated and i thought it might even be good enough for a professional tv production! The above was a lame representation to showcase a toyol (a child fetus) used by black magic practitioners to steal money / aid in gambling.

Don't know what this is but it's definitely a faceless ghost; maybe she had to make up in order to add the mouth, nose, eyes and ears. Thought this would be more Japan than Malaya.

A gory setting awaited us!

Langsuir - i think many people get confused with this and the potianak since both were the result of childbirth that went bad. However, the langsuir was not known for their beauty and in the kampong, families with heavily pregnant members were extremely careful at night as they believe that the Langsuir thirsts for the unborn child.

My friend, a dentist by the way, who was totally enjoying himself!

The blood stained attire by the side of the bed. There were many spots where you can take photos so long your camera is able to handle low light conditions and your hands don't shake.

Bring a tripod would be best, which i didn't as i am simply put, lazy. I did try my best to prevent the hands from shaking; hence, do excuse me if the photos turned out to be blurry. :(

Pocong (包头僵尸) - this was something i often see in Malay movies although i didn't know what it really was. Similar to the Chinese vampires, pocong jumps at night but it does so to seek help from humans to untie it from the cloth.

The friend at it again! As i was busy taking photographs, the rest of my mates were much quicker than me and it seemed that i am an easy target for them to scare! Too bad, i am a seasoned paranormal seeker!

Hantu Pisang - it was said that female spirits reside in banana trees and you can get them to help you by piercing a needle with a red thread that's tied to your big toe. Beware however that their revenge can be ugly.

Lighted kampong house with a bloody headless body! Back in the old days, street lights were uncommon and it was often a happy occasion to chance upon a lighted house if one were lost.

Honestly, i felt that this was more murder than hantu.

Old school latrine with just a hole for your waste products. I remember a similar outhouse in my uncle's house at the village although i had a greater fear of dropping through the hole than seeing many pairs of hands.

In Chinese custom, a lady who committed suicide while dressed entirely in red would be back to take revenge on those who had failed her. Not sure if it is applicable to men though.

Chinese
In the 80s and early 90s, horror movies imported from Hongkong fall generally under the Chinese vampires genre known as 殭屍. Even though the Chinese vampires in those films were generally evil with the objective to suck your bloody, there were instances of cute young ones who were not as bloodthirsty.

A make-believe ritual for the three 殭屍; two of which had prominent canines ready to go for your neck and suck up the essence that apparently gave them the strength needed to survive as an undead. Eh, how come no talisman on their forehead?!

Hm...... clothes for Chinese vampires and priest hung on the side. Are they part of the display?

Of course not! Time to don the attire and have some fun! This time, it was my turn to scare my mates as they didn't realise the clothes could be worn! Pity i had too friendly an expression and i couldn't stop myself from laughing!

Even Alex couldn't resist playing the role of a Chinese priest; the kind in movies that's simply out to earn some money yet doesn't have any real powers.

His masquerade as a Chinese vampire was less convincing although no less hilarious, resulting in laughter from everyone in our group.

Another photo point - a bloody pair of mysterious hands appeared out of the dark to grab you by your throat. They were a bit too high for me and it would look as if the hands were massaging my scalp.

Alex was happy to have his shoulders' massaged.

As it is the ghost month (known as hungry ghost festival) in Singapore, this sight should not be unfamiliar to those staying in Singapore. The festival is no longer as elaborate as 20 years ago but the burning of paper money, incense sticks and food offerings can still be seen at void decks, especially during the auspicious first and fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month.

Paper shoes, paper umbrellas, paper clothes were part and parcel of the festival too even though they were more common during the Qing Ming festival when Chinese honour their ancestors.

Egypt
I don't know why this was included as Anubis was a god of afterlife. It had a frightening face and if you are not unconvinced, do watch the movie; The Pyramid.

You can be pharaohs at this section; my friends were nowhere to be seen and i didn't think of using my iPhone to take a selfie!

Fake skeletons half buried in the caverns of the Egyptian burial grounds. Bet you would find some similarity while queuing for the mummy ride at Universal Studios Sentosa.

Placed as part of the "Egypt" section, i failed to see much relevance for the above; chest, a skeleton and gold coins were elements more suitable for pirates of the Caribbean!

Rubber scorpions climbing up the wall.

This was a revolting sight with insects crawling out of the oral cavity; if the insects were moving, i think i might have gagged and purged the lunch i had earlier.

Staircase up the second level - we were finally halfway through!

Pirate
Oh, so that skeleton with a chest and gold coins was a prelude of what's to come on second level. Banking on likely the popularity of the pirates of the Caribbean movies, i guess.

Pity the lighting condition (basked in red light) was incredibly bad for any decent photo taking (blame it on the photographer).

As the make-up mannequins were static, there's honestly nothing to be scared of. I was alone throughout as my tour mates were very much ahead of me and i didn't feel any spooks.

Pirates hung on a wooden beam and left to rot and dry by the salty sea breeze for betraying the captain of the ship. There's even a lady although i didn't know her role in the mutiny.

Without flash and then with flash - i must have taken over a hundred photos in this section as most, if not all, pictures turned out to be blurry!

Last look on the pirates before we entered the blue arena.

Dracula
Compared to the dim lights in the other sections (so far), my eyes took some time to adjust to the brightness of this ang moh style dining room.

Dentist in a cape waiting to strike from his resting place! I was already prepared as the noise coming from the room subsided suddenly as i neared the curtain separating the sections.

Grotesque vampire - guess all of you don't need any introduction on Count Dracula, a novel based on the cruel prince in Romania.

Chopped up hands and fingers that would serve as appetisers before the main course; we have something like that in Singapore for humans too - the bloodied looking sup tulang!

Main course; prepared in an unprofessional manner, this head should have its hair shaved and the spectacles removed. Have to clean his nostrils too; i noted some materials within.

 The feast shall begin shortly!

Japan
It's interesting when i read about the origins of lantern and umbrella ghosts; quite embarrassed i didn't know much about them before this as they were often featured in Hayao Miyazaki anime films.

In a nutshell, they were abandoned home items that were poorly kept and the idea was for Japanese to store their stuff in an orderly fashion and to pass them to the less well off if the family has no more use for them.

Rokurokubi - a long necked ghost, this was in fact a Buddhist who didn't follow the religion faithfully and turned into a hideous creature after his / her death. Frankly, it didn't quite make sense to me.

Kappa (河童) - i actually read a comic about it before although the river demons had a good heart and there were actually shrines honouring good natured Kappa in Japan. Now, let me see if i can still find the comic book.

Daidarabotchi - a son of god, he was said to be a giant and a protector of the forest. Since he is so tall, i am afraid we don't have the chance to see how it looks like.

Nope, there's no other way to prove he is a man except for the bushy hair on the legs. On second thought, i have seen ladies with leg hair longer, curlier and in much higher density than mine.

When we talk about Japanese horror, the movies "Ring" and "Ju-On" will come into picture and the above will no doubt send a chill down the spines of those who were badly affected after watching the movies!

For my polytechnic school mates who watched the show with me, we left the theatre with paranoia whenever our mobile phones rang in the middle of night and the CRT screen was switched off.

Alex appeared totally at ease and i have a suspicion he didn't watch the show!

Among all the mannequins i have seen so far, the one above took the prize for the highest likelihood to give me nightmares (even though there wasn't any).

Save for the plasticky looking hands, the facial expression accurately depicted that on a human! Should the ghost museum be used for halloween, this will be one place i am likely to give a high pitched scream!

Halloween
You know what's lacking from the UV lighted room that had hanging pumpkins and leave-less trees? Tombs with hovering spirits!

Without flash and with flash again - lights can play tricks on our eyes and this was the same with haunted houses ride at amusement parks around the world. Once you turn on the main light switch, the horror factor dropped by a significant number.

Shop
Also known as the witch's lair, you may explore the potions on the shelves and the unconventional ingredients that go into the boiling pot.

Although witches have a bad reputation in the Christianity world, i am of the belief that there's goodness in some of them. Maybe i have been brainwashed by the movies.

In the unfortunate event that the ghost museum closed down, i believe the converted shop house would become a spot for thrill seekers and even for black magic practitioners.

Dark water squid eyes - an ingredient that's not for sale. When i was younger, i remember reading somewhere about a shop in Arab street that actually has black magic ingredients for sale; things like the candle made of fats from a death row prisoner etc.

Skull with luminous eyes and a broken bloodied hand.

Interested to buy? A pair can be purchased at RM 38.00 No refrigeration is required and it shall remain fresh and bloody throughout the years.

You may also consider buying the caps and polo / tee shirts trademarked by the "ghost museum". Actually i would have considered the tees with the jumping Chinese vampire.

I played safe by going for the fridge magnets instead!

Walking past the menacing tree of Halloween zone again as we proceeded to the museum's exit. The map of the museum shall be shared with you shortly! :)

Point of no return as you couldn't re-enter once you go back to the real world. Actually you can, provided you pay for another ticket! Okay, i am kidding here as the staff members were friendly people!
