Monday is a bad day to find hawker food in Singapore as many stalls choose to rest on the first workday of the week; unlike poor office workers like me.
I was almost on the verge of giving up my search for any decent food at 117 Aljunied Market & Food Centre (better known as Geylang East Hawker Centre) until i turned a corner and chanced upon Quan Kee Wanton Noodles stall that was blessed with a longer than expected queue!
The queue cleared pretty fast with a young man helping his mom and i managed to get my wanton noodles (chilli) in no time. I did appreciate their speed as i was starving!
Counted three decent sized wantons that were tasty enough for to make a mental note to order their dumplings in the future. Soup was normal although there was a traditional touch to it; something pulled out from a distant past of my 36-year old memory.
Let's continue with the slices of dry looking char siew; they didn't taste as bad and had a soft texture which was rather good! Of course, i have always insisted that wanton noodles stalls should collaborate with Kay Lee for their wonderfully sinful char siew!
Finally, the noodles! Cooked just right, it had that old-fashioned flavour that evoked snippets of my childhood memories. The only problem was the chilli which was so shiok, so spicy; it was hurting a rather bad ulcer at the back of my tongue! Shall opt for the tomato-based wanton mee next time!
