In normal circumstances, you would not see me walking through One@KentRidge unless i experience 'high tide' and need to use the washroom before taking the train to Bishan.
Thanks to that one time when the bladder was almost on the verge of bursting; i chanced upon this new takeaway stall that served my favourite char siew and sio bak, albeit in the nippon fashion!
I returned the very next day and boy was it tempting to hear the slow cracking of the roast pork as the sharp knife slowly cut through the meat. That must be a mean slab of crackling roast pork!
How, how, how? My intention was to have char siew but it seemed like i could not do without sio bak too! Disregarding the recent spike in cholesterol, i put my foot down and ordered the caramel and crackling roast pork combo donburi.... with an onsen soft egg..
Ta-dah! As mentioned earlier, orders would be takeaways although there were tables and chairs for you to enjoy your meal immediately.
Of course i could not wait! The char siew wasn't very fattening yet it exuded a flavourfulness that caught me by surprise. I have always maintained that the taste of char siew was correlated with the fattiness and this wasn't part of the natural order!
That layer of crispy fat on top of the sio bak was obviously delicious even though the distribution of seasoning wasn't even, with some parts saltier than the rest.
No further comment on the onsen egg (which looked and tasted like a poached egg to me). It did have its advantage though; as a moisturizer to the dry short-grain rice! Oh, do keep in mind that homemade crispy chilli would automatically be added as part of the don. Although the chilli was great to have on plain rice (shiok in spiciness), it did a marvellous job in covering the flavour of the roasted meat which wasn't exactly a good thing.
