One of the few things i told myself to do before i resigned from NUS was to take on as many set lunches as possible in as many different restaurants situated in the business and downtown districts.
The rationale is simple; a set lunch is usually priced much lesser, comes with a free drink, sometimes with a complimentary bowl of piping hot soup and even a single serving of dessert of the day!
Not knowing what to eat in food-filled Plaza Singapura brought us to Ambush; a casual dining place dealing in notable European cuisines like Belgium, Italian, Spanish, just to name a few.
My pick for set lunch - Bolognese Paella with Sunny Side Up (i could not resist the temptation of a cheerful fried up surrounded with minced meat!
Complimentary minestrone soup (there was a free drink too) - although it was chock full of diced vegetables, i found the soup to be a bit too thin for my liking and lacked the flavourful, intensive punch i expected.
Paella is a traditional rice dish originating from Valencia in Spain; having rice is no big deal in the Asian culture although the short-grain rice used for paella is very different from what i am accustomed to; pulpy, somewhat round with a texture that was almost like eating boiled barley beans.
Unlike the lackluster soup, the intensity of this Bolognese paella was rich and savoury (note: it can get very heavy towards the end). The one thing that came to mind after chowing down a few mouthfuls was a spicy coney dog! How nice it would be to have a few sausages complementing the dish!
