Singapore has been hit with the rare cold spell this December and with the gloomy, rainy weather and lower temperature; even i start to crave for soupy stuff to warm the body!
Aside from the usual bak kut teh and meatball soup, i decided to try something that i wouldn't usually buy as it's not expected to be appealing for my preferred deep-fried, grilled diet; the healthy spinach soup and this particular one at Chong Pang Hawker Centre seemed to be part of a franchise with branches in other hawker centres.
There are only three items on the menu; Spinach Seafood Soup, Spinach Tofu Soup and Spinach Century and Salted Egg Soup, with options for your carbohydrate at S$0.50 each and top-ups, if applicable.
My choice was the Spinach Century and Salted Egg Soup! It was a close fight with the seafood but i guess my love for century egg wins! In addition, seafood soup would be better in the form similar to OAR Seafood Soup or Yan Ji.
Portion was huge and other than the sizeable amount of spinach (rich in iron by the way), pieces of century egg and salted egg; you can also find minced meat, fragrant mushrooms and Chinese wolf-berries! It was darn shiok to drink on a raining afternoon and i love the amalgamation of flavours (sweetness, saltiness, savouriness and the unique pungency)!
In terms of taste, i would very much prefer the Poached Chinese Spinach Soup with Egg Trio and Wolfberries from Hualong Fishhead Steamboat & Tze Char but the price difference (S$9.00 versus S$3.80) and the convenience of being closer to Chong Pang hawker centre means i would still go for this stall whenever the craving hits.
