To tell the truth, i love carbohydrates but i have always believed that they were major contributing factors to my weight gain and hence, i am perpetually on a carbo-restricted diet.
However, i do crave for the occasional carbohydrate indulgence like noodles, rice but there's one specific item that i have kind of forgotten and that's a surprise since i loved having it when i was a child; the butterfly bun!
As i grew from a child to a teenager and now to almost a middle-aged man, i have to admit that i have had my fair share of lousy butterfly buns; too much flour, no taste, flaccid texture. Well, the aforementioned would not be found in the freshly made ones you get from Kim Soon at Kovan Hawker Centre.
Offering only youtiao (chinese cruellers), ham chim peng (plain salted bun), sweet bean bun and of course butterfly bun (beh whay ji); each cost 90 cents but you can mix and match the vegetarian snacks for 3 pieces for S$2.50 (discount of 20 cents).
The insides were soft and fluffy and i am absolutely smitten with the nice whiff of deep fried sesame seeds adorning the bun as i sank my teeth into its crusty outer layer; mmmmmm, sweet enough with just a tinge of salty aftertaste!
I got the promotional 3 pieces and didn't realise the uncle had kindly included a 4th one that's even crispier than the norm! Max gratefulness! Anyway, i heard that Kim Soon youtiao is famous and believe so as i have yet to see any for sale in the couple of times i was at the hawker centre.
