When a fellow colleague suggested lunch at Hoho at Sunset Way, i was wondering if it's a Christmas themed restaurant as that's the opening for any sentence for Father Christmas!
The truth could not have been further as Hoho is a Korean restaurant and from the Chinese characters indicated, it's supposed to translate into good good. Well, my friends were raving about the food there so i guess they were not wrong to have named the restaurant hoho.
Appeared to be a family owned restaurant with the typical setup; wooden tables and chairs, walls plastered with pictures of Korean food and a wall mural depicting a traditional Korean dwelling.
Loving the bottles of complimentary water often offered in Korean restaurants! Now that we are getting older, plain water and hot tea would be preferred (and recommended by doctors) over sweetened drinks.
Side dishes - nothing particularly caught my fancy except for maybe the homemade kimchi, which wasn't overly spicy; it would have complemented perfectly for my sweet potatoes + kimchi diet.
If you are the kind who love Korean meat and soup and have a hard time deciding what to have; the lunch set menu at S$19 would appeal to you as you could have a choice of hotplate meat, soup and rice!
Our set; hotplate pork and kimchi soup with pork! To be totally honest with you, i was quite shocked with the portion for the hotplate pork which seemed too little for sharing. However, the taste was amazing; intense, flavourful marination on a spicy level that's utter addictive! For visual satisfaction though, the chef could have added in a large yellow onion!
The kimchi soup with pork was spicier than i expected and this could be determined by the itches and tingling i immediately felt on my scalp after taking a sip! A bit too rich for my liking even though the effected could be diluted by pouring the soup on plain, white rice. Loved the addition of tender pork in the soup.
Having the set to share among three people (despite two being small eaters) would be insufficient; hence, let's have dolsot bibimbap (you can choose between, beef, chicken and pork for the meat)! Actually, there's a difference with the word 'dolsot' being included; dolsot means that the bibimbap is served in a stone pot whereas the usual is a steel bowl.
Benefit of having a stone bowl is that you can get the crispy rice bits on the bottom! And this dolsot bibimbap at Hoho didn't disappoint; fresh ingredients and generous serving of pan-fried beef that oozed of juiciness. Hm... I think i could try making it myself at home!
Service was overall pleasant and hospitable in spite of the slight language barrier and i believe my colleagues and i would be back (very) soon as they served Korean fried chicken too!
